Good Afternoon and welcome to The Grass Roots Stadium for this

Spartan South Midland Premier Division tie.

Today we welcome the players, officials and supporters of Biggleswade

Utd to Tring, we hope they enjoy their short stay with us, and have a safe

trip back afterwards.

We also give a warm welcome to our match officials- Mr J.Killen and his

assistants-Mr P.Melvyn & Mr J.Reeder

Our guests today are in a rich vein of form at present. They have won 4

and drawn 2 of their last 6 game s and in those games have beaten

Berkhamsted, Hertford and Wembley. So they will come to us today full of

confidence. However we to are playing well and have beaten Kings Langley

and Wembley in recent weeks. We should therefore be in for a cracking

game today.

We picked up our second win in a row on Tuesday when after excellent

work by our groundsman Daryll we were able to play our third game in4

days on the pitch and still have a good surface.

This time we beat Holmer Green who have been a bit of a bogey side for

us in recent years.

That game was Dan Steadman's 100th game for the club so well done to

Dan.

Our under 15's lost to Harpenden in the ¼ final of the County Cup on

Sunday but put up a good performance.

Our reserves played at Berkhamsted on Wednesday in The Plate where

they won 3-2 after extra time. A great result as Berkhamsted although a

division below are 6 points clear at the top.

History of Tring Athletic: Formed in March 1958 by a group of local men who contributed app. £2,000 towards the cost of the land, fencing,

changing rooms etc .Players, Committee members and friends carried out the work while the team played on another

pitch. Originally formed for youngsters under the age of 21, the team won many trophies in the West Herts. Div. 3

including the Div. 1 title 3 times in 5 years, often playing against adult sides.

The 70’s/80’s The Club went through a lean time and it was decided to scrap the upper age limit. Many former players returned

which resulted in another successful period in the early 1970’s.

Many fine players turned out for the Club and went on to play for professional/senior clubs. In the mid-seventies the

Club nearly folded and the ground was sold to the Council. The reserves were disbanded and the First team dropped

down through the leagues. It was decided to turn to youth again. This formula enabled the Club to work back through

the leagues and by 1986 we were competing in the Premier Div. and the reserves were resurrected.

South Midlands-The 90’s. In 1988 the Club joined The South Midlands and as a result gained Senior status with The Herts. FA

In 1989 we entered in a 3 year ground sharing agreement with Tring Town.

In 1992 the first team moved back to Miswell Lane, where the Reserves had continued to play. The side established

itself in The South Midlands and gained promotion to the newly formed Senior Div.

in 1993. In 1994/5 season, the First Team reached the final of the Senior Div. Cup While the Reserves were finalists

in the Apsley Junior Cup for the second year running.

In 1996/7 after leading the Div. for the whole season, some poor results at the end found us finishing 3rd. We also

reached the semi- final of the Herts. Charity Shield and won the St. Mary’s Cup beating 5 Senior sides including

Isthmian League Hemel Hempstead and Berkhamsted Town In 1997/8 after winning the last 14 games we lost out on

the Title on goal difference of 2. The Reserves won their league by 10 points winning every home game. The following year we won the South Midlands Senior Div. Cup and also The St. Mary’s Cup for the second time,

defeating neighbours Tring Town in the semi-final in front of a crowd of 350, mostly Athletic supporters. In the

league after suffering just one defeat in 28 games, we finished 3rd.

The 1999/2000 season proved to be one to remember. £ 50k was spent on new changing rooms and extending the

Clubhouse and over 1000 people turned up to watch a Watford X1 refereed by Graham Barber and Graham Poll.. We

also formed a third team a Vets side and a Ladies team. The season turned out to be our most successful. Not only

winning the Senior Div. by 11 points, we also reached 5 finals. Winning The Herts. Charity Shield, Herts. Senior

Centenary Trophy and the Cherry Red Books Trophy in it’s inaugural year. We were narrowly beaten 1-0in The Senior

Div. Cup and the reached Final of the St. Mary’s Cup which was never played because of a back log of fixtures.

We were awarded the Houghton Cup for achievements in outside competitions.

The Management team were also voted Managers of the season. We lost only 6 out of 60 games all season. The

Reserves reached the Final of The Intermediate Cup and the A Team finished runners up in the West Herts. Div.

The New Millennium We continued our success into the new one (2000/01) by retaining the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy (again beating

Wormley Rovers 2-0) and the Cherry Red Books Trophy (Virginia Water 1-0). The Reserves won the League title and a

newly formed B Team claimed the runners-up spot. The following season (2001/02) we won the Herts. Charity Shield

for the 2nd time beating Letchworth 4-1. The A Team reached the Apsley Junior Cup final and the B Team won the

sporting award. Season 2002/03 – More success followed as we capture the Herts. Senior Centenary Trophy for the 3rd time, to

become the first club to do so. We finished 3rd in the table and won the League Cup for the 2nd time, to make 12

major trophies in 7 years. We were also finalists in the Cherry Red Books Trophy. The A Team finished runners up as

did the Under 16's in their first season, the B Team won the sporting award for the 2nd year running and the Ladies

had a great run in the Women's FA Cup. For the 3rd year running Darrel Bodimeade won an award for the best playing

surface, which is just reward for the tremendous job he does for the club.

Season 2003/04 –Following our failure to secure floodlights at Miswell Lane we entered into an historic alliance

with Tring Town to play our first and reserve team football in season 2004/05 at Pendley where lights are already in

place. The main focus was to be to raise the funds needed to build a new Clubhouse, the previous building burnt down

in March 2003. Miswell Lane will be retained and will be used by our A, B, and Ladies sides. This new arrangement

with Tring Town secured senior level football in the town.

Season2004/05 – New season at a new ground in a new division with fantastic facilities. First team finished 6th in

the Premier Division and also won the St Mary's Cup for the 3rd time defeating Hemel Hempstead in the Final. We

were also Runners Up in the South Midlands Floodlit Cup Final losing on penalties to Oxhey Jets. Played in the F A

Vase for the first time.

Season 2005/6 –The Club entered the F A Cup for the 1st time in its history but was defeated in the prelim

round. In a disappointing season the highlight was a victory over Watford in the Herts Senior Trophy with a large

crowd enjoying a 1-0 win. Defeat in this competition came at the hands of Stevenage Borough of the Conference

league

Season 2006/7-The first team finished mid table after a difficult start to the season. Went 3 rounds in the e.on

FA Cup, losing to Kings Lyn, the biggest side in the competition at that time. The events of the year however came

after the season had completed. Mick Eldridge and Ray Brimsom stepped down as first team managers after 17 years.

Ron Brimsom also after 16 years decided to hand over the reigns and our Hon. Secretary Ralph Griffiths also stood

down after 25 years in that position. A wealth of experience which thankfully will not be lost, as they are all staying

on in some capacity.

Season 2007/2008-.The new management team of Phil Casserley and Terry Nightingale ended in glory at The

County Ground, Letchworth, with the First Team lifting The Herts. Charity Shield for the 3rd time.

Season 2008/2009- A reasonable league campaign saw the first team finish in 8th position. However in true Athletic tradition, it was in the cups in which we excelled, reaching 4 semi-finals. After being 4-2 up

with just a few minutes to go, 3 late goals meant the first one slipped away. This strengthened the resolve of the

whole team and in a remarkable last seven days of the season, three trophies were gained. Winning the League

Challenge Trophy and Premier Div. Cup for the first time and also defeating local rivals Leverstock Green to pick up

the St. Mary’s Cup for the 4th time Ex-player, Ben Williams re-joined the club as reserve team manager mid season and will lead the side in the Suburban

League next season.

Season 2009/2010- After last season’s tremendous cup haul, this year the first team finished without a trophy. However they finished third in the league, the highest position the club’s history so far. With the ground getting the

higher ground grading required, the management and players will be hoping to put in a challenge for the title in

2010/2011.

The B Team did pick up some silver ware winning The Stanley Rous Challenge Cup at Hemel Hempstead Town’s ground.

Season 2010/2011- The first team finished runners up in The Premier Division. They also won The St. Mary’s

Cup beating Leverstock Green in the final and reached the final of The Floodlite Cup, losing 2-0 to Royston Town

Season 2011/2012- With a new Management set up and several new faces in the First team, we were pleased to

finish in the top six and reach 3 cup semi-finals. All our sides performed well, with one of our youth sides going

through the league season undefeated. The ladies won their league and reached the final of the County Cup, losing to

Arsenal reserves. SEASON 2012/2013 - Mixed season with the 1st team winning their initial F A Cup tie at Bedfont and then

losing in the next round to Ashford Town after a replay, in the F A Vase we lost at first hurdle to FC Romania. In the

League we finished just below half way, lost on penalties to Hadley in the semi final of the Premier Division Cup and

were finalists in the St Mary's Cup losing to local rivals Berkhamsted. The "A" Team, under Dave Adamson and James

Bevan won the West Herts Peace Memorial Cup for the first time in the Club's history. Unfortunately the Ladies

team withdrew from their league through lack of players. SEASON 2013/2014 -First team had a good run in The FA Vase and finished mid-table. Reserves finished

runners up on goal difference and won promotion to the Premier Division. Club purchased the Free-Hold of the ground

and second pitch to ensure future football in the town.

Biggleswade United – Our Club History

Biggleswade United Football Club was re-formed on the 16th July 1959. However, local

history records indicate that there was a Biggleswade United side playing at Second

Meadow as early as 1929. Our first season (1959/60) saw us competing in Division Three

of the North Herts. League (NHL).

After 10 successful years in the NHL the club made the step up to South Midlands League

(SML) football. But towards the end of a 15-year association with the SML the club began

to struggle and after three years of finishing in the bottom three of Division One we sought

fresh fields. The club joined the Herts. Senior but club continued to find the going tough. In

1986 we elected to return to local League football, joining the Bedford and District

Football League and began to build again.

The appointment of Brian Swords as first team manager in 87/88 proved to be the turning

point in the club's fortunes. During the next ten years the club achieved a tremendous

amount of success on and off the football pitch. Our record of League and Cup honours

speak for themselves but aligned to this a great deal of work went on behind the scenes to

match the on-field success. The club now boasts one of the best clubhouse and ground

facilities in the Mid-Bedfordshire area. The success of the club has also attracted many new

players as well as commanding a great deal of loyalty from those players who helped the

club progress from Division Three of the Bedford and District League to County Senior

Club status in just 15 years.

The 1995/96 season was the most successful in the club's history - winning five major

honours; the Beds Intermediate County Cup, Bedford and District League Championship,

League Cup Championship and as the League's representatives the club won the Beds. FA

Centenary Cup. Having won every major Bedford League honour the club felt it was time

to move on and made the decision to make the step up once again and returned to Division

One of the SML. In an exceptionally successful first season we celebrated a Division One

"double" by winning the Championship and the Division One Cup. We also retained the

Beds. FA Intermediate County Cup, only the second club in the competition's history to

achieve this feat. To crown our success the club were awarded the SML Special

Achievement Trophy in July 1997.

In the season 1997/98 we finally achieved Senior status. This was achieved not only

through the endeavours of the players on the field but ultimately as a result of an extremely

hard working committee. With the help of the Biggleswade Town Council a new stand was

erected and perimeter fencing installed. And two seasons later the club erected floodlights and on the evening of 26th October 1999 we played our first-ever floodlit game at Second

Meadow, Ryman League side Leighton Town were the visitors in the Bedfordshire Premier

Cup.

The next eleven years saw the first team led by Steve "Snowy" Wright and under his

management the club continued to enjoy a very high level of League and Cup success

ultimately achieving promotion to the Molten Spartan South Midlands League Premier

Division and with it the opportunity to compete in the FA Cup. And under Snowy the club

made three Beds FA Senior Challenge Cup final appearances, winning two of the three

with victories over Stotfold (4-1) and Leighton Town (1-0) but missed out in 2006/07 going

down 2-0 to Dunstable Town. Snowy's other cup successes came in the form of the Hunts

Premeir Cup, North Beds Charity Cup, Hinchingbrooke Cup, the SML Division One Cup

and the SML Special Achievement Award once again.

The end of the 2006 2007 saw Snowy step down as manager with his assistant, Nick

Burton taking over the first team reins.

The 2006 2007 season marked a crucial time in the club's history with the formation of a

youth structure that sees Biggleswade girls and boys aged 7 to 18 able to be part of

Biggleswade United. We now have twelve youth teams including three girls teams with a

well established youth committee. The profile of the club as a community club is very

much boosted by the association with such a well organised and well structured youth set

up.

January 5th 2009 saw the club embark on further ambitious ground improvements. With

financial backing from Biggleswade Town Council, Mid Beds District Council and the

Football Foundation we installed a 260-seater stand, fully enclosed the ground with a

double turnstile entrance and players' secure walkway which raised the ground to Grade E

status.

After several years of stability in terms of first team managers the next six years saw a

regular turnover of first team and reserve team managers with Nick Burton, Dave Elkin and

Phil Childs all taking over the first team reins for a time.

At the start of the 2013 2014 season we appointed Mick Reardon and Mark Royal as first

team managers both of whom have enjoyed success as coaches at the higher levels of

football. Their disciplined approach was quickly adhered to and responded to by the

players. The new 2014 – 2015 season has seen the arrival of several new young players to

the club following the club’s positive decision to introduce a side that will compete in the

Suburban League as well as continuing to compete in the SML Premier Division. The

Suburban side will be managed by Gary Burkett who enjoyed success with Shefford Saints

Under 18s and many talented young players will be part of the United Squad. Gary will be

assisted by former Bushey Met Police manager, Tony Jones. In November 2014 the club

took a further positive step to realise our ambitions with the appointment of Sky Sports

Presenter and renowned author, Guillem Balague as Biggleswade United’s Director of

Football.

The club has certainly come a long way in relatively few years but we could not have done

it without the help of a very supportive Town and District Council who clearly understand

the benefits of having a community based club in Biggleswade. Our success is also very

much down to a very hard working committee who throughout the year - not just the

football season - continue to volunteer their time and commitment to the club, to help it

continue to thrive and be a source of enjoyment for our supporters and the Biggleswade

community.

Following another exibition of the fine work of our groundsman,

this match was able to take place where many failed again.

Athletic overcame local rivals Holmer Green with a hard working

performance and enhance their home record for the season.

Athletic nearly scored after just 2 minutes following a defensive

error,but Chris Vardy' cross was just out of reach of Kieron Turner

who could not get a firm touch to hit the target.

Both sides looked to attack whenever they had the ball but it was

Athletic who opened the scoring after 16 minutes. Ryan

Sturges won the ball on the right then played a deft pass to Kieron

Turner to score.

Holmer Greens keeper had to go off in the 24th minute following an

earlier injury, outfield player and captain Gary Lines donned the

goalkeeping jersey and Paul Lindsay came on for the injured

keeper.

In the 27th minute Holmer Green equalised through Tom Peddle-

James following a quick break, the ball seemingly taking a

deflection to beat home keeper Jack Hopwood.

Just 2 minutes later Athletic regained the lead. Ryan Sturges again

involved putting a perfect cross into the area and finding Chris

Vardy who headed into the goal.

Holmer Green won a number of corners and free kicks during the

last 10 minutes of the first half but were unable to create any

chances with Athletic defending in numbers.

Holmer Green looked to find an equaliser from the start of the

second half, striker Dean Allen trying his luck from a long way out

but keeper Jack Hopwood saved comfortably.

It was Athletic however who then increased their lead. An excellent

move involving Ryan Sturges and Kieron Turner down the right saw

the latter fire in a low cross which found Vinnie Iannone at the far

post, who blasted the ball into the roof of the net.

Athletic nearly scored again just minutes later, defender Kevin

McManus hitting a post following a defenders error.

The game was fairly even, neither side were able to dominate

possession but there was at times some good football being played.

As the game progressed both sides made substitutions with Vinnie

Iannone being replaced by Stewart King and Holmer Greens Tom

Peddle-James being replaced by Tom Fifield.

In the 74th minute Holmer Green won a free kick near Athletics

penalty area, Nick Robinson found himself unmarked at the far post

from the free kick, played the ball across the goal, the ball fell to

Athletics Sam Joliffe who mis-hit his clearance but fortunately the

ball rebounded off the crossbar before Athletic managed to clear the

danger.

In added time Taylor Collins, who earlier came on for Kieron

Turner, ran at Holmer Greens defence, his initial shot rebounded off

a defender but he then unleashed another shot which stand-in keeper

Gary Lines did well to save.

As usual this was a close game between the two sides, with both

sides working hard to produce an entertaining game on a good

playing surface.

On 30 September 1938, British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain triumphly waved an

Anglo-German Agreement declaring "Peace for Our Time" at the Heston Aerodrome. Shortly

afterwards came the bloodiest global conflict of the 20th Century.

In the lead up to the 1976 Test Series, England Captain Tony Greig proudly declared that he

intended to make the West Indies grovel. England slumped to a 3-0 Series Defeat.

Along the same theme, on 10th January 2014 - Tring Athletic Reserve Manager Colin Phillips

surveyed his striking options - with club record scorer Andy Humphreys and Alex Groom

returning, and with Stewart King and Ryan Sturges in the line up - and confidently predicted

goals in their Suburban Premier League clash with Carshalton Athletic. Athletic failed to record

a shot of note all game...

It wasn't for the want of trying. As has been the case all season, Tring grafted, worked hard and

had good shape - but the opposition has been a step above all season. In the first half, Athletic

were shoddy in possession but restricted their opponents to shots from distance. They also

could have had a couple of penalties and could feel hard done by. King surged down the right

and whipped over a cross that Humphreys and Groom agonisingly failed to reach. That was in

Tring's first attack as sloppy play persistently put the lads under needless pressure.

Tring improved - King surged forward again but was hauled down. No penalty.

A free kick was whipped into the box - Smethers was hauled to the floor. No penalty.

With Tring on the ascendancy and piling forward, Ryan Sturges inexplicably underhit a

backward pass to George Tomlin. Green missed his tackle and Grasso could not stop the shot.

Half Time - TAFC Res 0 Carshalton Ath 1

The second half started in the same vein - with Carshalton excellent defence preventing

Humphreys and Green from getting a sniff.

At the other end, a Carshalton free kick was left to beat everyone and was headed back across

the box. 2-0.

To their credit the lads kept on battling, with Caterer making a difference with his direct

running. But no-one could get on the end of his crosses. At the other end, Grasso made a couple

of fine saves to keep Tring in it.

But despite their brave efforts and excellent team spirit it was not to be.

Although Athletic nearly scored in the first minute it was Hillingdon who

had the better of the first 10 minutes. They won several corners and home

keeper Jack Hopwood was called into action after 5 minutes to palm away a

shot from Roy Byron.

Athletic then moved up a gear and were creating a number of good

opportunities, especially down the right hand side. Midfielder Kieron Turner

had three shots during the half that just cleared the goal and Vinnie Iannone

had a header saved by visiting keeper Alex Marginean following a good run

by Taylor Collins.

Athletic finally got their reward for all the hard work. Rob Tomlin won the

ball in midfield, he fed the ball to Kieron Turner who played the ideal ball

through to striker Vinnie Iannone who then coolly beat the keeper at the near

post.

Although Athletic dominated the remainder of the half Hillingdon had a

great opportunity to equalise, however centre forward Robert Gradwells shot

flew high over the bar.

It took Athletic just 4 minutes from the restart to increase their lead. A quick

break saw Taylor Collins collect the ball, his pass inside found Kieron

Turner who checked to the side of a defender before firing low into the far

corner.

Opportunities kept coming and Vinnie Iannone hit the underside of the bar

following good work by Kieron Turner.

The 61st minute saw a contentious referee decision. Vinnie Iannone was

played through by Kieron Turner, he pushed the ball past the oncoming

keeper who clattered him to the floor for an obvious penalty. Everyone was

expecting a certain red card but the referee only produced a yellow.

Sam Joliffe stepped up to take the penalty but blasted the ball over the bar.

Stewart King came on for Vinnie Iannone and scored with his first touch in

the 70th minute after being played through by Taylor Collins. Athletic

continued to create chances and scored again in the 81st minute. Stewart

Taylor Collins to score.

An excellent result for the home side and their supporters. Athletic fully

deserving the win following all their hard work and some excellent football

at times.

It was also pleasing to see defender Adam Toone slotting back into the side

after injury and contributing to a clean sheet.

Thanks also go to groundsman Darrell Bodimeade, working wonders, that

enabled this game to go ahead following the adverse weather conditions

over the past few days, including snow on the morning of the game.

What a terrific effort by all of the lads this morning.

We dominated the early stages of the game but gifted our opponents a

goal – this one from our corner.

After going a second goal down we re-grouped and really worked hard

to get back into the game.

Every player worked well in their positions and we gradually

committed more and more players forward to try and create chances.

It seemed unbelievable given the play that we could go into half time 2

goals down but after some great encouragement during the break we

flew out in the second half.

We were rewarded with an excellent goal from Harry Poll who finished

well with his left foot after staying up for a corner.

It was all Tring from then on but as hard as we tried we just couldn’t

get the goal our play deserved.

As the game wore on we left gaps at the back but Luke Priestley came

to our rescue whenever Harpenden broke.

This was a spirited performance the like of which we need every week.
