Twenty-second Sunday after Pentecost

Welcome

Only a few Israelites in Moses’ time remembered the promises God made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. In the meantime, they were languishing in their servitude. But God had plans for their freedom; He would take them to a land of milk and honey. The Church after Jesus’ ascension was impatiently awaiting His return. In the meantime, they had to deal with a pagan society and even false teachings within their group. But our Lord’s promise to return is sure, validated by His resurrection from the dead. For those who have gone before us, the meantime is over; they live to God in eternity. In the meantime, that sure promise of gracious blessings in eternity and our Lord’s presence with us now carry us through to the day when we join them around the throne. Meanwhile, today is another day on which to join the psalmist and praise the name of the Lord.

Holy Communion

We believe that Christ’s body and blood are truly present in Holy Communion, and that we receive the forgiveness of sins along with the bread and wine in this Holy Meal. As a “Family Church,” we invite those who share this understanding, and who desire God’s forgiveness and strength, to join with us in receiving Holy Communion. (Gluten free wafers are available.) If you have any questions, please speak to our pastor at any time. All worshippers are asked to fill out the “Fellowship Pad” in the pew and pass it down. After all have signed, please leave the pad at the end of the pew to be picked up after worship. Please stand where indicated with a . Thank you!

HYMN “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise” LSB 802

INVOCATION

P In the name of the Father, and of the T Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen. [Matthew 28:19b]

CONFESSION and FORGIVENESS

P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our

sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. [I John 1:8-9]

+ Silence for reflection on God’s Word and for self-examination +

P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father.

C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean.

We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have

done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our

whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly

deserve your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of your Son,

Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that

we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your holy

name. Amen.

P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. [John 1:12; Phil. 1:6]

C Amen.

PRAYER

P The Lord be with you.

P Let us pray. Living God, Your almighty power is made known chiefly in showing mercy and pity.

C Grant us the fullness of Your grace to lay hold of Your promises and live

forever in Your presence;

P through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C Amen.

OLD TESTAMENT LESSON 1 Chronicles 29:10-18

Therefore David blessed the Lord in the presence of all the assembly. And David said: “Blessed are you, O Lord, the God of Israel our father, forever and ever. Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name.

“But who am I, and what is my people, that we should be able thus to offer willingly? For all things come from you, and of your own have we given you. For we are strangers before you and sojourners, as all our fathers were. Our days on the earth are like a shadow, and there is no abiding. O Lord our God, all this abundance that we have provided for building you a house for your holy name comes from your hand and is all your own. I know, my God, that you test the heart and have pleasure in uprightness. In the uprightness of my heart I have freely offered all these things, and now I have seen your people, who are present here, offering freely and joyously to you. O Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, our fathers, keep forever such purposes and thoughts in the hearts of your people, and direct their hearts toward you.

R This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE 2 Thessalonians 2:1-8, 13-17

Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered together to him, we ask you, brothers, not to be quickly shaken in mind or alarmed, either by a spirit or a spoken word, or a letter seeming to be from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God. Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? And you know what is restraining him now so that he may be revealed in his time. For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work. Only he who now restrains it will do so until he is out of the way. And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will kill with the breath of his mouth and bring to nothing by the appearance of his coming.

But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter.

6

Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

R This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL LESSON Luke 20:27-40

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twentieth chapter.

There came to him some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, and they asked him a question, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man's brother dies, having a wife but no children, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife, and died without children. And the second and the third took her, and likewise all seven left no children and died. Afterward the woman also died. In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For the seven had her as wife.”

And Jesus said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, but those who are considered worthy to attain to that age and to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage, for they cannot die anymore, because they are equal to angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection. But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in the passage about the bush, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. Now he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for all live to him.” Then some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well.” For they no longer dared to ask him any question.

APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus

Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the

virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He

descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into

heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will

come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy

Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the

resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

PREFACE

P The Lord be with you.

P Lift up your hearts.

P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who on this day overcame death and the grave and by His glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing:

us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power,

and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
