Summer at the College has a distinctly different rhythm: generally slower and more sedate, though sometimes the pace is so hectic that it’s a shock to recall that most of the students, however sadly missed, are in fact happily (from all points of view) far away.

In looking forward to the new term and to a fresh influx of new and familiar faces, I hope that some at least will notice the extensive annual efforts to rejuvenate and improve the old place. Likewise, there are novelties to contemplate and enjoy. The green roof on Cartwright Hall is looking lovely; the solar panel on the roof of Larkin is in place and basking in what sunshine remains; and we now have beehives on the top of Henderson Tower, with the promise of honey to come. No roof at Trinity is safe from positive environmental action, it seems.

The summer is of course also a time for catching up with family or friends, or even long-forgotten projects (such as the book I just finished, which I hope you’ll all buy! Look for details in the next issue of the magazine), as well as for taking stock and travelling. Recent trips to Iceland, France and Eng-land have reminded me how good it is to get away, and how much better it is to come home.

Various groups of scholars also visited the College over the past few months, most impressively to attend the 20th World Congress of the International Association for the History of Religions, with several members of our Divinity Faculty having toiled heroically to bring more than 700 people from around the globe together.

The theme of the Congress, “Religion: A Human Phenom-enon,” certainly strikes a chord with a College that remains wedded to twin Faculties of Arts and Divinity. As a former Classicist, it has always interested me that the Latin word religio is apparently connected etymologically to words for tying and binding, and that while religion can be both an obligation and a bond, others have also sought to link it to

the notion of choice (since the words for choosing and bind-ing are in Latin quite similar). To see so many scholars come together from so many places to discuss what it is that binds them, and us all, was an inspiring sight, and one that Trinity should be proud to have helped sponsor.

This brings me back to our bees, the most recent summer additions as members of the College. Up on Henderson Tower they live, a prime and pretty spot on the University of Toronto campus, among a small and very vibrant community commit-ted to their welfare and development. They come and go, but what they leave behind is at least as important as what they take away. Alas, bees these days, especially in large and largely barren urban environments, seem rather beleaguered, if not bereft. But ours, as long as they learn to love and live beside a Philosopher’s Walk that remains a quiet haven in Toronto’s busy bustle, will surely thrive.

To medieval minds, bees were a perfect symbol of scholar-ship: flitting and sipping by day from the flowers of many fields, returning home each evening to share what they had acquired, and together, turning all to a sweetness that others could also enjoy. It’s not a bad model for a college, especially one that, like Trinity, has always had its own buzz. To put it another way: to change a simple “hive” into a place in which to “thrive,” simply blend in TRIN.

some fairly new members of the trinity community, and they

moved onto campus over the summer. nope, they’re not students

who did an early check-in to residence. they’re bees.

the idea to house bees at the College first came up after a

group of students (several of them from trinity) and local apiarists

Brian hamlin and peter Kok approached trinity’s bursar, Geoffrey

seaborn, with a proposal to host some hives. hamlin had already

installed a few hives atop a new College residence, and this was a

chance for interested trinity students to become apprentice bee-

keepers closer to home.

the initiative fits right in with trinity’s other eco-friendly

projects, such as the green roof. “We’re receptive to this sort of

idea as it is consistent with our general objective to be a leader

in institutional sustainable practices,” says seaborn.

together, hamlin and seaborn found a home for the bees

on top of henderson tower, overlooking philosopher’s Walk.

the apiarists provided the bees, the hives, protective jackets,

and professional guidance in the form of peter Kok. they were

officially moved in on June 2.

every two weeks over the summer, Kok trained groups of four

students, “pointing out what to do and how to behave around the

bees.” he emphasizes, however, that the hives “are managed first

and foremost by the students.” in fact, he recently handed over the

full responsibility of beekeeping to the volunteer apprentices.

a Gift for studies in urban ministriesA Toronto institution has closed its doors. St. Philip-the-Apostle Anglican Church in North York, founded in 1875, ceased opera-tions in May after 135 years of service to the local community. As part of its plan for closing, the parish decided to leave a legacy to Trinity’s Faculty of Divinity, and established The David Clarke St. Philip’s Trust Fund for studies in urban ministries. During its last service on May 30, the parish presented David Neelands, Trinity’s dean of divinity, with a cheque for $100,000, and generous donors, including many alumni, continue to contribute gifts.

The trust fund was named for Fr. David Clarke ’34 Div ’36, a forward-looking priest who served at St. Philip from 1946 until he retired in 1981 (he continued to teach preaching at Trinity after that). The funds will be used to expand upon or revise existing courses and to support students in urban ministry studies, as well as fund placements. They will also cover the cost to run what Neelands calls a “very adventurous” course in urban ministry taught by the Rev. Dr. Gerry Loweth, a Trinity faculty member who brings a variety of urban social services into his course.

As one of the oldest Anglican congregations in Toronto, St. Philip has had a long association with Trinity. Over the years, many theology students from the College have completed their field-work requirements there. “These placements have always been considered opportunities to learn in a progressive and theologically alert community,” Neelands says.

He adds that the parish, which was originally located in what is now the heart of Toronto’s central Chinatown, at Dundas Street West and Spadina Avenue, “has been at the forefront of operating as a church aware of the city around it.”

Robert Bothwell, professor and director of Trinity

College’s international relations program, has won

the prestigious J. B. tyrrell historical medal from the

royal society of Canada.

the medal is awarded every two years—if there is a

suitable candidate—for outstanding work in relation to

the history of Canada.

prof. Bothwell “has given Canadians a sense

of place within an international context and has

worked tirelessly to ensure that those outside

Canada see Canada as part of the international

context as well,” reads an excerpt from the citation

highlighting his achievements.

he has authored, co-authored or edited more

than 26 books on Canadian history, and written

and narrated five radio series on Canadian and

international history, among many other accomplish-

ments. most recently, he is co-editor (with trinity’s

former provost, margaret macmillan) of the

history of Canada series, one of the first releases

under penguin Group Canada’s brand new allen

lane imprint.

the J. B. tyrrell medal was established in 1927

and endowed by Joseph Burr tyrrell, a geologist, geog-

rapher, explorer, engineer and amateur historian, for

his efforts and successes in furthering the knowledge

of the history of Canada.

in other faculty news, abrahim h. Khan, professor

and advanced degree director in trinity’s Faculty of

Divinity, was honoured recently for his role as one of

two main founding editors of a series called

Acta Kierkegaardiana.

the series comprises 10 volumes, with supple-

ments. supplement 1, 2010, won the award of

Getting CreativeStarting this fall, Trinity’s Faculty of Divinity is

showing off its artistic side.

Within its master of theological studies

program, the faculty is now offering a concentra-

tion in theology and the arts so that students can

combine religious studies with visual arts studies.

David neelands, trinity’s dean of divinity, says

the new concentration was launched after several

students and faculty members showed an interest

in merging the two disciplines. among the leaders

of the initiative are prof. michael steinhauser,

prof. John Franklin and ian mcKinnon.

a fellow of trinity College, prof. steinhauser

currently teaches courses on the new testament.

he is also a distinguished painter who has held art

exhibits throughout Canada and the world. most

recently, he was invited to display his paintings at

the Florence Biennale, an international contempo-

rary art exhibition in Florence, italy.

prof. Franklin is a visiting professor to trinity’s

Faculty of Divinity, who also teaches courses in

theology and the arts at emmanuel College, the

theological college at the university of toronto’s

Victoria university. his dedication to both fields

of study extends beyond the classroom: Franklin

is also the executive director of imago, a charity

that seeks to promote and support Christian art-

ists in Canada.

a doctoral student in the theology department,

mcKinnon has been a working visual artist for

many years. Before coming to trinity, he was a

faculty member at the nova scotia College of art

and Design.

Courses in the new concentration will be on such

topics as theology and the arts in dialogue, and

aesthetics and theology. students will also have

the option of studying a broad range of art history

courses offered by u of t’s Department of Fine art.

throughout the history of the Christian Church,

religion and the arts have been both friends and

foes. With this new initiative, students will have

the opportunity to explore the sometimes conten-

tious, always interesting, and constantly evolving

relationship between the two. Madonna and Child, by Carlo Crivelli.

Students from Trinity’s Faculty of Divinity were able to apply their in-class studies to the out-side world when they attended a three-week study tour and pilgrimage to the lands of the Bible this past spring.

Twelve students, as well as divinity alumni and several lay people from across Canada, accompanied David Neelands, Trinity’s dean of divinity, and the Rev. Dr. Richard LeSueur, tour leader and teacher for the course credits, on the trip.

The group travelled exten-sively throughout Israel, the

Palestinian territories and the Egyptian Sinai to see various archaeological and historical holy sites. They also met and talked to local people, includ-ing Israelis, Palestinians and the Bedouin, which “pro- vided some unique insights into the narratives of the Bible, and Christian origins,” Neelands recalls.

He cites a camel ride up Mount Sinai in Egypt, and visits to Nazareth, Jesus’ childhood home, archaeolog-ical digs at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem and an authentic

baptismal site on the Jordan River as highlights of the trip. The group also brought greetings to the Anglican Bishop in Jerusalem from the Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada.

The faculty organizes study tours every other year, inviting as many students as possible to participate. To make the trip affordable, it provides students with significant financial assistance in the form of bursaries, to which some divinity alumni also contribute monetary donations.

Doing Our PartTrinity College once again donated the

use of the Buttery to the Feeding our

Future program over the summer.

For the second year in a row, volunteers

from trinity College, sodexo (trinity’s food

services operator) and second harvest (a

local charity) prepared free lunches for 13

toronto-area kids’ day camps. more than

30,000 lunches were made on weekday

mornings between July 5 and august 20,

and distributed before noon to children

in need.

Feeding our Future, a joint project of

second harvest and the sodexo Founda-

tion, now operates in eight cities across

Canada, providing meals to children

who, without school-season lunch pro-

grams, might otherwise go hungry during

the summer months.

Trinity has a history of attracting and producing academically strong

and community-minded students, and this year is no different. six

trinity students were among the recent recipients of high-profile

graduation awards and in-course scholarships.

Alexander Mann ’13 and Connor Emdin ’13 have each been

awarded William and nona heaslip scholarships. these renewable

scholarships are given to trinity students in financial need, who

have a strong academic record and actively participate in College

and community life. emdin says he is grateful for the financial

freedom that the award gives him: “[it] will allow me to focus my

energies on my volunteer commitments, research and academics

without burdening my family.”

Claire Schachter ’10 is the recipient of this year’s William and

nona heaslip trinity–st. antony’s scholarship in international rela-

tions. this scholarship, trinity’s largest, is awarded in alternating

years to a graduating student or recent graduate in the international

relations (ir) program. schachter will pursue a master of philosophy

degree in ir at oxford university’s st. antony’s College this fall.

she says receiving the scholarship is “both humbling and hugely

motivating.” schachter is also the recipient of trinity’s G. s. Cart-

wright prize for high achievement in ir, and the meltzer memorial

travelling scholarship in ir.

Cara Evans ’13 is the first-ever recipient of trinity’s new John

harvey Whiteside scholarship. the award was established to provide

continuing funding to a trinity student enrolled in an arts or Com-

merce program who demonstrates strong academic achievement and

community participation. evans says she is “deeply honoured and

absolutely shocked” to win the scholarship.

Shu Yun Wu ’09 was awarded the university of toronto’s Gover-

nor General’s silver medal, which is given to three u of t students

with the highest Gpa upon graduation. she is also the recipient of

trinity’s Chancellor’s Gold medal in science and the prince of Wales

prize for high achievement in math.

David Boehmer is the recipient of a doctoral fellowship in theology

awarded by the social sciences and humanities research Council

of Canada, which provides $20,000 annually for three years of

study. Boehmer is starting his second year of trinity’s Doctor of

theology program this fall.

For undergraduate students, there’s no single guaranteed recipe for success. Hard work is one major ingredient, but having a happy, stress-free living envi-ronment is just as important. Luckily for those who come to Trinity, the Office of the Dean of Students exists to help resolve problems of a non-academic nature, and to ensure that everyone has an experience that is rich, engaged and memorable.

This year, Trinity welcomed a new team to the Office. Jonathan Steels recently took over as dean from Kelley Castle, under whom he had worked as the Col-lege’s first-ever assistant dean since 2006. A former academic don with a PhD in biochemistry, 34-year-old Steels is famil-iar with the precise, orderly nature of aca-demia, but also with the unpredictable nature of events outside the classroom and the myriad circumstances that can intrude on that order.

Taking over Steels’ former position is Kristen Moore, a 29-year-old teacher by training, who worked for four years as residence life manager at the University of Guelph. The new dean team admits that

their job demands a wide variety of skills and expertise.

“It’s a multifaceted role in which differ-ent priorities compete daily,” says Moore. These can include everything from set-tling roommate conflicts to revising disciplinary policies to working with stu-dent government to dealing with mental health, family and financial problems.

Flexibility and a cool demeanour are essential qualities, says Steels. “If a student has just lost a family member and doesn’t know what to do or where to go, we have to drop everything in order to help.” He underlines that empathy, privacy and confidentiality are also critical elements of the work that he and Moore do.

Lisa Grossi ’08 graduated with a degree in English. While at the College, she found the Dean’s Office to be an invalu-able service. “Adjustment to student life can be overwhelming, and you often need a grounding force,” she says. “The dean of students provides that, because you feel you can go there with any sensitive issues that might come up. In terms of setting people up with resources on campus, they’re very knowledgeable.”

In addition to dealing with the many crises that arise as a matter of course, Steels and Moore are now focusing on expanding the reach and function of the Office. Revamping its web presence and engaging students who live off-campus are important goals. And there will be more of an emphasis in the coming year on implementing transitional program-ming for graduating students.

“A lot of institutions across the country have extensive programming for students coming into first year, but they don’t do a lot at the tail end of the degree,” says Steels. “Students often have a difficult time figuring out what’s next.” The deans plan to work on specialized career nights for alumni, and arranging other opportu-nities for mentorship.

Steels and Moore bring a wealth of experience and education to their roles, but both note that their youth is a valu-able asset as well. “It helps to be young, so you can relate to the students,” Steels says. “But also to be old enough to know what resources are available, and to be aware of problems that can come up during the maturation process.”

Three years ago, the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) was reeling in the aftermath of the murder of 15-year-old Jordan Man-ners, who was shot to death en route to the washroom at C. W. Jefferys Collegiate Institute. While much of the media hype following the inci-dent painted a grim picture of violence, gangs and drug use in the schools of the city’s poorer neighbourhoods, administrators were quietly work-ing in myriad ways to bring the public’s—and the school board’s—focus back to education and community outreach.

Ed Malabre, principal at Humber Summit Middle School in Toronto’s Jane and Finch corridor, for example, collaborated with education con-sultant Brett Cumberbatch ’07 to provide a series of leadership work-shops for Grade 6 boys identified as needing support.

“Schools in some areas of the city don’t have all of the necessary resources to provide developmental, emotional and social support,” Malabre says. “Sometimes we need to work with outside organizations to fill the gaps.”

Cumberbatch co-founded one such organization, Smash the Glass Ceiling Consulting (STGC), in early 2008. Through STGC, he has worked with school boards, government and NGOs to help them overcome social and demographic challenges in the education system. “I truly believe school is not just about books, the curriculum and tests. It’s also about developing people,” he says.

Over the past year, he has worked with 15 Ottawa-based schools, in addition to running a boys’ leadership program at three Toronto schools: Humber, C. W. Jefferys and Elia Middle School. “Because of their lives at home and on the streets, a lot of these young men already have adult tendencies, but they lack organizational skills.”

Page 11: Trinity Magazine Fall 2010
Page 12: Trinity Magazine Fall 2010

His lessons are academic and social, covering everything from literature and writing to conflict-, stress- and time-management, and preventive problem-solving skills. He lets the boys lead class discussions about social issues in their communities and the world at large. “I tell them, ‘Sure, there are a lot of bad places in the world, but there are a lot of great places as well, and you have every right to be there.’ It’s all about getting them to see beyond their block.”

Cumberbatch was born in Barbados, the only child of a single mother. Growing up, he moved often between Barbados and various Canadian cities with his mom, before the two of them finally settled in Toronto. Only 13 at the time and feeling rather isolated, Cumberbatch became entangled in violence and activities involving drugs and gangs, and got into fights with his classmates.

“I lived in the principal’s office for most of my high school career,” he recalls. “The rest of the time I was home on suspension.”

This continued until a new vice-prin-cipal noticed that the young man had potential. With his mentor’s encourage-ment, Cumberbatch joined the student council and started tutoring young peo-ple in literacy. For the first time, univer-sity seemed an achievable goal. He shut out the chorus of voices that told him he wasn’t good enough, or that his love of literature wasn’t “black” enough. This is also when Cumberbatch adopted his favourite mantra, one he now drums into the impressionable minds of his students again and again: No one can hold you back without your permission.

“I told my mentor I wanted to be the best. He said that in order be the best, you had to compete with the best.” He took Cumberbatch to his very first debate

12 TRINITY ALUMNI MAGAZINE

Page 13: Trinity Magazine Fall 2010

competition, where he met some Trinity alumni. Their success inspired him.

“People in my community laughed in my face when I told them I wanted to go to Trinity,” he says. “They told me that a young black man would never succeed there.” Now a proud Trinity alum, Cum-berbatch admits his first year at the Col-lege was a rough transition. “I learned quickly that your high school accomplish-ments don’t matter once you’re in univer-sity.” And physically, he felt that he stood out. “Only one other guy looked like me.”

Cumberbatch eschewed partying and instead delved into academic and volun-teer work. People noticed: throughout his undergrad years, he forged great connec-tions with the Trinity family. “My first-year seminar professor, Patricia Bronskill, was big on telling me not to waste my talent.” Dr. Ivan McFarlane ’65 and Austin Clarke (honorary grad ’59; doctor of sacred letters ’00) taught him the importance of elevat-

ing himself. “They are also black, and we had many deep conversations about how true success is colour-blind.”

Cumberbatch credits Bruce Bowden, Trinity’s registrar and director of student services, with awakening his entrepre-neurial spirit, an honour Bowden insists doesn’t belong to him. “From the outset, Brett prioritized volunteer tutoring at a couple of Toronto’s schools located in dis-advantaged neighbourhoods.

“Within a year of his starting at the Col-lege, he was proposing that Trinity form formal links with one of these schools, both to provide a single school as a focus for Trinity students’ volunteer tutoring, and to bring these students onto campus on a regular basis to broaden their per-spectives,” Bowden says. “Brett thought too many visible minority students in the northwest section of the city had never seen the university and thus had no rea-son to think of U of T as an attractive and

obtainable objective.”Cumberbatch says that Bowden also

prompted him to become editor of the Trinity Review, for which Cumberbatch had to manage a budget, hire staff and be prepared to “get his feet wet.” He made the Review that year “more modern and multicultural” by poring over student work in search of unique, overlooked art—the same approach he uses in his educational work.

“If you have met Brett, his is a large build, a large voice, and a large and outgo-ing personality,” Bowden says “Add to that his drive and creative instincts, and he is, quite simply, a force.”

Starting STGC was a logical next step after graduating from Trinity, Cumber-batch says, and it was a chance to get paid for what he was already doing. He took a month-long Rotman Executive Educa-tion bridging program to learn some of the crucial business skills for setting up

fALL 2010 13

Page 14: Trinity Magazine Fall 2010

STGC, and earned a Master of Education from the University of Toronto’s OISE.

Currently, the 27-year-old is one of only a few male minorities pursu-ing a PhD in education at OISE in the Curriculum, Teaching and Learn-ing Department, where Cumberbatch is drawing on his work with STGC, investigating best practices for engag-ing high-priority students and teaching them literacy skills. After completing his PhD he has plans to advise and train teachers, and has a book idea in the works on improving the educational approach for at-risk students.

“Brett is a hard-working, dedicated person who has a passion to work with and create opportunities for students who are experiencing challenges in school,” Ed Malabre says. “He learns quickly and adapts his program to meet the needs of all students.”

At the middle school level, Cumber-batch says he softens even the toughest attitudes by inviting students to role-play. “I don’t want to sound cheesy, but it’s actually a very beautiful thing to watch. Once you get them comfortable, they show you terrific forms of art.”

He’s a big believer in the power of poetry, a medium that allows the boys to express themselves and be critical of the world around them. His students also keep journals, which he says is key to personal health. “We’re not a very vocal and reflective society anymore; there aren’t a lot of opportunities to open your heart up and be vulnerable. Journaling decreases anger and depression.”

Cumberbatch offers a lot more than inspiration, too. STGC provides several schools with writing scholarships and various awards for literature, and 10 per cent of every dollar STGC earns is rein-vested in his students.

In the slow summer months, he vol-unteers for the not-for-profit Youth Association for Academics, Athletics and Character Education, which empowers youth through developing self-confi-dence, discipline and career aspirations

and fostering racial and ethnic identity. He says it “does more for disadvantaged kids and victims of abuse and poverty than any other group I’ve encountered.”

This fall he’s back to school with 70 new students at C. W. Jefferys and 15 to 30 at Humber Summit, and he’s expanding his program to three other high schools in the Jane and Finch area.

“I feel I’ve been blessed. I’ve been afforded opportunities that have allowed me to succeed. The kids I work with have very little. I can’t encourage a kid to follow his passion for drawing with- out buying him some art materials. I can’t let him go to school without a proper winter coat. That would make me a hypocrite.”

Of course, Cumberbatch is being modest; a lot of opportunities he created for himself. But that’s his point: Nobody can hold you back but yourself.

“ i told my mentor i wanted to be the best. he said that in order be the best, you had to compete with the best”

Prim, cutthroat “suits” with no tolerance for stupid questions; vampire-like creatures who wander skyscraper hallways with bloodshot eyes; workahol-ics in desperate need of work/life balance: A year ago, if you had asked fourth-year Trinity College student and aspiring law-yer Margaret Kim to describe the people working in her chosen profession, you would have got precisely this sort of dire speculation.

Still, despite her preconceptions, Kim wanted to see for herself what it would be like to practise law. “I had certain ideas of what I would like to do,” she says, “but I suspected that appearance and reality could have differences.” Encouraged by recommendations from her upper-year friends, Kim applied to Trinity’s mentorship program. About three weeks later, associate registrar Dr. Bruce Ferguson set her up with some-one who was able to shed some light on the reality of being a lawyer.

Ferguson is a matchmaker of sorts, but not the kind one might expect. He runs an informal mentorship pro-gram at the College, through the Reg-istrar’s Office, pairing up interested third- and fourth-year students with successful alumni in the students’ career area of choice. The program is a great resource for scholars who often don’t know anyone working in the field they wish to pursue and therefore get only second-hand or textbook informa-tion on what the day-to-day elements of said career might entail.

“My family members have always been mental and emotional pillars for me, but since I came to Canada [from Korea] about 10 years ago, they have been unable to provide me with knowl-edge-based guidance regarding the sys-tem or process to attain a legal career in Canada,” says Kim.

When Kim met David Bronskill ’96, partner at Goodmans LLP in downtown li

Toronto, her bleak impression of lawyers all but disappeared. “I realized that a law-yer’s work is much more diverse than my previous understanding,” she says. “Law firms do not have to be as scary as they are presented in the John Grisham books I have read.”

What Kim found at Goodmans was “a very respectful and happy environment,” and in Bronskill she discovered a friendly, attentive and cheerful lawyer, hard-work-ing yet well-rounded.

Kim and Bronskill’s relationship exem-plifies the way a little time and effort can have a profound impact on both par-ties. For example, the two set up meet-ings via e-mail, and because they’re both equipped with BlackBerrys, it didn’t take long to firm up times and dates. Meetings (more like casual chats) generally lasted from 30 minutes to an hour, and took place over coffee at Bronksill’s office in the Bay Adelaide Centre. (Kim also men-tions that, though his BlackBerry went off continually, her mentor ignored it during their talks.)

Finding a perfect career match for each student is not possible, but that is not the point of the mentorship program. Kim is interested in pursuing international pri-vate law and arbitration, while Bronskill’s focus is municipal law for the private and public sectors throughout Ontario. Deciding on a discipline has actually become less important to Kim since get-ting to know Bronskill. “The most valu-able lesson I learned from David is that I do not have to be completely set on what type of law I would like to prac-tise because that is what law school is for!” she says.

Bronskill points out that simply show-ing an interest in a student’s development at this stage makes a huge difference. “In time, the people you’re mentoring are going to do very successful things in their life,” he says. “In fact, Margaret’s going

to do way more interesting and dynamic things than me—so there’s an opportu-nity to live vicariously through them.”

The nature of the mentor-mentee rela-tionship naturally varies from one part-nership to another. While Kim’s visions of legal eagles were put at ease after spend-ing time at the Bay Adelaide Centre, two blocks south, fellow Trinity student Claire Glossop ’11 was coming to a very dif-ferent realization. On the 44th floor of Brookfield Place, Glossop found the office environment every aspiring lawyer must dream of: open, airy lobby and hallways; polished dark-wood desks and doors; striking, abundant art; and panoramas that stretch for miles. For a time, Glossop had dreamed of this, too: since age 11, she had been dead set on practising law like her father, Peter Glossop. But by the begin-ning of her third year at Trinity, she wasn’t so sure. “I was at a crossroads as to whether I wanted to do law or business,” she says.

After signing up for the mentorship pro-gram, Glossop was paired with Andrew McFarlane ’93, a partner at McMillan LLP. On a sunny August day a few months into the program, the two are sitting in his firm’s impressive boardroom on that 44th floor. There is an obvious comfort and friendly familiarity between them as they discuss the magnificent view: perfectly clear blue skies over Lake Ontario.

cant impact on Glossop’s education and career path. “It’s so nice to have a Trinity alumnus to talk to informally,” she says. “To have that connection not only about Trinity, but about a career you potentially might want to have, and to see how that process evolves.” Throughout their meet-ings in coffee shops, or at the McMillan offices, Glossop and McFarlane’s conver-sations have run the gamut from broad questions (“The first thing I like to ask is, how did you end up here?” says Glos-sop) to advice on practical details (“Don’t bring just one pencil to the LSAT!” says McFarlane).

This is the third time McFarlane has been a mentor to Trinity students. His experience in guiding younger students as a Trinity don during his law-school years

at the University of Toronto made him an obvious candidate for the mentorship pro-gram. And when Ferguson e-mailed him a few years ago to ask if he’d be willing, he happily obliged.

The program has been just as rewarding for McFarlane as for the aspiring profes-sionals he mentors. “It gives the students a window on what we’re doing,” he says. “But it also gives us, the alumni, a window back on Trinity to see what’s going on. You get something out of that as well.”

That mutual gain and connection between students and alumni is what Fer-guson was hoping for when he set up the program 12 years ago. “There was a need from the student side to connect with peo-ple in various careers, and we naturally thought there was an untapped resource

of alumni from Trinity who go on to do great things in their professional lives,” he says. “Why not see if there was an interest in helping out?”

Ferguson has set up 20 to 25 mentor-mentee relationships each year. The response has been overwhelmingly posi-tive, and it’s easy to understand why. Most of the Trinity alumni he has asked have a real fondness for the place, he says. They enjoy being on campus and are interested in making sure current and future stu-dents have the positive experience they had themselves. Mentorship is one way of doing that.

The benefits to students are even more obvious. Ferguson highlights what he views as one of the program’s main advan-tages: students can make a connection to h

the wider College community rather than simply forging relationships with fellow classmates. Plus there’s the practicality of getting to know someone in a given career. “A lot of students come here say-ing, ‘I want to be a doctor, I want to be a lawyer,’ ” says Ferguson. “But they don’t know what work in that profession is like, or most importantly, what living that pro-fession is like.” This gives them an oppor-tunity to find out.

Ferguson has singlehandedly built the program into the winning model it is today. But as successful as the mentor-mentee pairings have been, he hasn’t always been able to find a mentor for every student who wanted one, particularly for those interested in the finance, account-ing and general business fields.

This year, in order to broaden access to and expand the program, Ferguson is teaming up with Jonathan Steels, Trinity’s dean of students, and Bronskill, to make some changes to its structure. In the fall term, interested students will have the opportunity to attend one or more career-development workshops without alumni, where potential mentees will learn how to write a CV, approach professionals effectively, and zone in on their career of interest. During the winter months, alumni will be invited to attend a large-scale mentorship reception with the students. They’ll be asked to come prepared to talk about their work, and, if they happen to make a connection with someone, encouraged to invite them for a follow-up chat. “It might be more of an approachable format, and socially, more natural,” says Ferguson.

Bronskill thinks the modifications will

greatly improve the program. “Not only will there be the one-on-one mentorships, but there will also be a greater opportunity to have alumni return and share their experiences with more students,” he says. “It will be easier for students and alum to meet and forge connections.”

McFarlane hopes the less-formal ap - proach will attract a larger group of mentors. When he was at Trinity, he says, “It would have been nice to talk to some-one who was on the same wavelength.” He adds that he knows many of his former Trinity classmates want to give back to the College and points out that the program “is a very rewarding and easy way to do so.”

The greatest reward of the mentorship program for Glossop, as it turns out, is that she realized perhaps law isn’t right for her, right now. But there are no hard feelings on McFarlane’s end. “The point to take from Claire is that the mentorship program doesn’t just allow students to see what they’re interested in,” he says. “It also allows them to see what they’re not interested in.”

if you, as an alumnus(a) of trinity College, would like to volunteer as a mentor in the program, please contact Dr. Bruce Ferguson at the registrar’s office: 416-978-2687; [email protected].

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the 2009–2010 Donor Report. As you will see, the alumni and friends of Trinity have once again proven to be generous and loyal supporters. On behalf of all of us at Trinity, and especially the students whose lives you have enriched, we extend our deepest thanks.

In 2009–2010, the Strength to Strength Campaign came to a successful conclusion, raising $19.5 million, well above the $15-million goal. Strength to Strength was a tremendous demonstration of the confidence of our alumni and friends in the future of the College.

Trinity’s annual fund continues to be our most vital source of regular financial support. Annual fund donations are put to work immediately to enhance academic programs, student services and the library. In 2009–2010, we received $868,000 in gifts to the annual fund. Both the amount given and the number of donors increased over last year.

Recently, Trinity renamed its annual fund The Trinity Fund in recognition of the direct connection between your annual gift and the programs and services that set Trinity apart.

It is a great privilege to be associated with so many generous friends. Thank you for investing in the students of Trinity and for helping to sustain Trinity as a college of distinction and enduring values.

They were there. I know they were there because they told me they were there. They are Asian crim-inals. They were at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa. And they were trying to fix matches. I also know they were there because they are always at international soccer tournaments, from the under-17 World Cup to the Olympic Soccer tour-nament to the World Cup itself.

The gang has approached many differ-ent teams, players and referees. I inter-viewed the president of the Ghana Football Association (the equivalent of the NHL for Ghana), Kwesi Nyantakyi, who said, “In every competition they are there. It is done all the time in major tournaments The gamblers are not Africans, they are Europeans, Asians, so they have a lot of money to bet on these things. Even at the [Under-17] World Cup in 1991, when we won, there were gamblers around, offer-ing a lot of money to the team to throw away the match.”

Nyantakyi’s comments aren’t unique. Others inside the sports world say much of the same. In fact, I interviewed him because for the past seven years I have been investigating the links between organized crime and sport—particularly soccer, the world’s most popular game. After I had been working for several years on the topic, I was invited to meet one of Asia’s top match-fixers.

It was an extraordinary conversation. It took place late one night at a private golf course in Bangkok. I was instructed to go to a room, where I met the fixer. He had two mobile phones on the table in front of him, an aide beside him, and a beautiful

woman on the bed. I had intended to go purely as a doctoral researcher looking for answers to generic questions about corruption in sport. Instead, I listened as he brazenly fixed matches in front of me. The South-East Asian Games (SEA) were going on. The SEA Games are a kind of mini-Olympics for the region, and the fixer was corrupting the soccer tournament and speaking to various players and coaches.

I watched him for an hour and finally asked: “What is the biggest match you have ever fixed?” “I don’t know,” he replied. “Which is bigger, the Olympics or the World Cup?”

I thought to myself: ‘This cannot be true. Games at the Olympics and the World Cup are too big to be fixed.’ So, very politely, I said, “I’m sorry, I do not believe you. I think you can fix matches here in the local Asian leagues, but you cannot fix a match at the World Cup.”

He looked at me with a stony face and said, “All right, watch me.” For the next seven months the fixer took me inside meetings as the group prepared to corrupt matches at the 2006 World Cup in Ger-many. I sat in at a meeting with the then-national-goalkeeping coach of Ghana. He was later fired from his post for fixing matches, and his secret hearing and con-fession are posted on my website. All these meetings I secretly videotaped with a hid-den camera.

The book that resulted from this investi-gation has, in part, inspired the formation of an integrity unit at the European Foot-ball Association (UEFA) and an investiga-tion by the German Organized Crime Task Force. At the time of publication, they had arrested more than 100 people in connec-tion with match-fixing in sport.

The average North American sports fan might be astounded to hear this story. They may not be aware of what is going on, because the average sports journal-ist is a walking oxymoron. Most sports journalists’ coverage of the World Cup amounted to puff pieces about the “col-ourful fans” in the stadiums, tear-jerkers about the morale of the various teams, and lots of eye-closing articles about the Napoleon-like coaches and their astute “tactical” choices. (How they can write these stories when the closest they get to the players and the coaches is watch-ing them from 100 metres away, behind a wire fence, is beyond me.)

What these journalists will not report is that there are hundreds of former World Cup players who have been exploited,

your VoiCes, your stories

i listened as he brazenly fixed matches in front of me.

42 TRINITY ALUMNI MAGAZINE

Page 43: Trinity Magazine Fall 2010

used and then tossed aside to make a retirement as best they can in an African slum, or in a forgotten apartment build-ing in a forgotten city in one of the former Soviet countries. What the journalists will not report is that on some teams in World Cup South Africa, team players did not know how much or even if they would get paid. What the journalists will not report is that there are dozens of cases—mostly from African or former Soviet countries—

of players going on strike in the middle of a big soccer tournament because they are desperate for their pay. This is the key to corruption, and the fixers know it. They go to the tournaments with bags of cash, open them in front of the players and say, “Your soccer association will not pay you if you win. However, you work with us and your biggest problem will be how to spend the money.”

Until this problem of paying the athletes

properly is solved, the fixers will continue to show up at all the big international soccer tournaments. They will continue to approach players and referees. And sadly, they will find many willing to listen.

Declan Hill ’94 obtained his doctorate from

the university of oxford in corruption studies

and informal governance. his book, The Fix:

soccer and organized crime, is an international

bestseller available in 14 languages.

Declan hill argues that match-fixers are at every big soccer tournament, even the most recent World Cup in south africa.

For those of you who read the summer issue of trinity, you’ll remember seeing a new letters to the editor section—your letters—which i promised would be the first instalment of a regular department. i had hopes of reaching out to alumni near and far, hearing all about what you loved or loathed in the magazine and discovering what you wanted more of. sadly, i heard not a peep out of any of you. alas, one can’t have a your letters department without letters … so, i’m game to try this one more time before i throw in the towel. i know there are many highly intelligent and insightful grads out there. and i know you’re reacting on some level to the stories you read in the mag. this section is for you. please write. your lonely editor, lisa paul
