Summertime...
Dear Parishioners,
Carry Centre
The Social-Fundraiser on May 23rd is sure to be a highlight of the year. More
details on page 15.
Query
As we come to the end of the 3rd Volume of The Obelisk, I would be keen to
hear from you, the Readers, of what things you like to see appear in the
magazine. Have you got suggestions of what we might include in Volume 4?
Your thoughts and comments would be appreciated.
Golf Outing
Due to unforeseen circumstances the date for the Golf Outing has been
changedI draw you attention to the new details on page 20.
Patronal Festival
We celebrate our Patronal Festival every year on Trinity Sunday. This year it
will happen on Sunday June 15th. I have invited the Very Revd Kenny Hall to be the guest preacher at 10.45am. Dean Hall is Rector of Enniskillen and Dean of
Clogher. During his tenure as Dean he has welcomed Queen Elizabeth to the
Cathedral and in an historic move accompanied her to the neighbouring Roman
Catholic Cathedral.
After the service we will have our annual parish lunchmore details on page 18.
Final thoughts
As we enter into the Summer season, I hope and pray you all find time for rest
and refreshment in, what I hope will be, another great Summer!
With all good wishes,

Sports Spot My Sporting Life I was born with sport in my blood! I have a newspaper
photograph of my parents wedding with the caption Two Tennis Stars Wed and they were good at other sports also, so it was always in the family as I was growing up.
My first real love was Hockey which I played at Wesley
College and later for Pembroke Wanderers. At school I
also liked Swimming and can still remember the
excitement of the annual Gala!
After I was married I played Squash (in what is now
Westwood), which is a great quick game for when one has
small children because it is possible to have a good
exercise session and yet only be away from home for little more than an hour. Next
came Table Tennis and my introduction to the Carry Hall where, week after week
there was fun and laughter plus of course serious matches! I was match secretary of
the United Churches Table Tennis League for a few years, a job I really enjoyed
because I could see who beat who throughout the Parishes! I also dabbled a little in
Holy Trinitys morning Badminton but did not have time to play regularly. Despite my parents coaxing I did not play tennis seriously until I was in my late
twenties when I joined De Vesci Tennis Club and was immediately hooked, playing in all the different League matches throughout each year. I served on committee
there for many years and had the honour of being Lady Captain and President of the
Club.
Like so many people Golf seems to follow Tennis and that was my next step,
although I played both for ten years. I joined Carrickmines Golf Club 21 years ago
and just loved the game straight away even though it was slower and I was hitting a
stationary ball, when anything else I had ever hit was moving! Again I served on
various committees in the Club, was Secretary of the Ladies Section for three years
and was honoured to be Lady Captain in 2009.
I would strongly recommend that all able young people participate in at least one or
two different sports particularly team ones, as there is nothing quite so exhilarating
as the unique thrill of sharing a win with other team members and through that they
also learn the lesson of commitment, which stands to them throughout life. Sport is
a truly great relief for all kinds of stress and tensions and friendships made through it
can be very strong and supportive, often lasting a lifetime.
Some of my influence passed on to both our children because our daughter reached
a much more senior level at Hockey than I ever did and our son, who is a single
handicap golfer, is now taking part in Triathlons. I have taken my granddaughter
swimming regularly since she was nine months old and now, at almost six years of
age, she is learning tennis and wants me to play with her! How I would love to do a
U-turn and start all over again in reverse if only!! Helen Irwin

From the Tower Tea Rooms...
My name is Jennifer and I manage the Tower
Tea Rooms located in the original gate lodge to
Victoria Park (just off Killiney Hill Road). Ive lived in Killiney for the past 20 years with my
husband, Jonathan, who is also in the catering
business. We met over 30 years ago when we
both worked in Fitzpatricks Castle Hotel. We have 3 children (twin girls and 1 boy (who is
currently studying hard for the Leaving Certificate!)).
People often say to me what a wonderful place
to work and I have to agree I do enjoy working
on the Hill. The most magical time is early in
the morning before you open and all you can
hear are the birds singing as the morning light comes streaming through the
windows. The moment you open the shutters its all systems go. From the early jogger popping in for a quick takeaway coffee at the end of their run to the
regulars who pop in for a slow cappuccino, a slice of lemon zest cake and a chat of
course! I get to meet some really great people and we have built up a great
customer base over the last year and a half whilst we have been in operation.
Myself and the team (Cloe, Stephen and Greg) have become acquainted with all
our customers and, of course, the dogs who we love to spoil with our doggie
treats. Customers say its a great asset to the community, being able to walk the dog and then stop on the way for a coffee or a bowl of soup and a sandwich. So if
you havent been in yet, pop in and say hello!

particularly useful just type meet with Sarah at lunch tomorrow and itll add as an event at the right time. Handy to-do lists

Pack your bag to Australia We flew to Sydney in early January to visit our son, Geoff, his wife Sarah and boys
Harry (6) and Jamie (4). They live
in Allambie on Sydney's north
shore a forty minute drive from the airport crossing the iconic
Harbour Bridge. After a joyful
reunion we sat on their deck
under a cloudless sky shaded by a
gum tree, listening to the
cockatoos, lorikeets and the
occasional kookaburra.. There
were also water dragons taking
the sun on the bank by a nearly
stream.
The local swimming beaches are Curl Curl and Freshwater where we swam with
the boys nearly every day during our holiday. There was also some tasks to be
undertaken, such as laying a path and recladding a car port. The vegetable garden
was also tackled once we had assurances that there were no snakes, the spiders
were friendly and the geckos (small lizards) are great at eating slugs.
We celebrated Australia Day on 20th January by joining in a flotilla of boats sailing
from Manly past Shark Island and Fort Denison to Darling Harbour. By the bridge
there were two tug boats turning quite magically as if dancing to the tune of
Waltzing Matilda being played
by a band on Circular Quay.
Later that day we took
refreshments at the Rocks, an
historical part of Sydney.
At weekends there was dinghy
sailing at the Balmoral Sailing
Club near Mosman. Geoff and
Sarah raced their dinghy aptly
named ESCAPEE. I joined the
crew of the rescue boat in
mark laying and assisting
