1 20102011 Triple I Progress Reports Submitted by Campus Units Department/Unit Imperative Goal Progress Achieved Accounting & Financial Services Innovation Build, in coordination with HR, SFA, and IT, of online PA form process. The ePAF team has documented current processes and is currently designing the electronic process. Student Employment, HR, Payroll, and IT are working closely together to develop the first ePAF, which will be for student employees. A student ePAF is expected to be completed in the Fall 2011 semester. Building Partnerships Develop a budget development process for auxiliary units. A budget rollup worksheet was developed and used for the 11‐12 budget development process. This rollup provides a summary of individual auxiliary foapals and ensures each auxiliary unit has a balanced budget. The Director of Accounting designed the worksheets with input from the auxiliary directors. AIMS/Student Affairs Innovation Increase Junior and Senior students' ACT Test Scores in Math and Science because of their active participation in a new test prep program. 1. 85% of Juniors and Seniors High School students taking the ACT Test by December of 2011 will improve their scores in Math and Science Reasoning by 10%over their last years score. Building Partnerships Establish connections with target area Churches and Boys and Girls Clubs to assist with recruitment of students for the Program. 1. The program will connect with at least 5 new community organizations for the 2010‐2011 recruitment cycle; to be completed by January 2012. Alumni Affairs Innovation Development and implementation of a fully functional mobile application for MSU. 1. Request for bids was released Fall 2010. 2. Company was selected and contract negotiated in Fall 2010. 3. Development of proto‐type application early spring 2011 with test version for summer 2011. 4. Additional contract and integration of iTunesU with mobile application was developed over spring 2011. Next steps: 1. Fully functioning application will soft launch August 13, 2011 with full launch August 22, 2011.

Duringthepastyear,Ihavekeptupcommunicationswiththeteachersintheregion,withemailstoallsecondarymathematicsteachersthispastFalltotellthemaboutSpringcoursework,andanotherroundofemailsthispastSpringtotellthemaboutSummerandFallcourseworkaswellasaboutanew(online)optionforSpring2012.ThroughtheSpring2010surveywewereabletoidentifyaclasstimethatwasmoreconvenientforthein‐servicesecondarymathematicsteachersandidentifyastatisticscoursethatisofinteresttoanumberofthem.LossofastatisticianlastSummerandthedevelopmentofanotherstatisticsclassmadeitimpossibletogettheteachingstatisticscoursedevelopedforFall2011,howeverIhavegoodhopestohaveonereadyforFall2012.Theemailsandsurveyhavebeguntheprocessofbuildingcommunicationsbetweenourdepartmentandthein‐serviceteachers,asindicatedbysomefollow‐upemailsfromahandfulofin‐serviceteachers.Whiletherewereonly3in‐serviceteachersinourcoursesthisyear(andatleastoneadditionalonethissummer),Iexpectthistoincreaseinthecomingyearsaswelearnmoreabouttheireducationalneeds,astheybecomemoreawarethatweareinterestedintheirfutureeducationalneeds,andaswecatchmoreofthemtowardsthebeginningoftheirplansratherthanattheend.Finally,thispastSpringIalsoinvitedMiddleSchoolMathematicsteachersinthe18countyregiontoasurveyliketheoneIhadinvitedSecondarySchoolMathematicsteachersto(inSpring2010).Thus,whilewedidnotmeetlastFall'stargetofhaving5in‐servicesecondaryMathematicsteachersinMaster'slevelcoursework,butwedidachieveastrongbeginning.

Toestablishaconnectionbetweenourmathematicsscholars(bothstudentandfaculty)andthoseoftheregionalcommunitycolleges.

WecontactedanappropriateclubateachofthefourKCTCSschoolsinourregionaboutdevelopingarelationshipbetweenourclubandtheirs,awardingscholarshipstotheirbestmathematicsgraduatescominghereasmathematicsmajors,andotherwiserecruitingtheirmathematicsgraduates.TherewassubstantialinterestgeneratedwithPaducah,andwedidawardascholarshipthisSpringtoaMathematicsstudentgraduatingfromWKCTCandcomingherenextFall.MembersofourMathClubweregoingtoassisttheirMathclubinputtingonanElementary‐MiddleMathcontest,butthecontestwasputoffuntilthiscomingFall.TherewasalsorealinterestfromtheHopkinsvilleCampus,wherethecommunicationpromptedthesponsoroftheScienceclubtrytogetthememberstomakeitaScience/Mathclub.Thatwasallthefurtherthatwegotwiththemthisyear.TheHendersonfacultywereinterested,buttheyjusthavetoofewstudentstomakeaMathcluborarelationshipviable;we(usandthem)leftitthatwhentherewerenextsomeinterestedmathematicsstudentsthere,we'dconnectinsomeway.TheonlydisappointmentwasthatwewereunabletoprogressanyfurtherwithMadisonville,eventhoughtheyalreadyhaveaMathematicsclub;thefacultytherewereverybusyimplementingsomechangesthathadoccurredthere.Havingaspeakerexchangethispastyearwashamperedsomewhatby

theplannedeventwhichwaspostponed,andbythetimedemandsofthe4facultysearchesthatourdepartmentengagedinthispastyear.Thus,withrespecttothegoalslaidoutlastFallwemadethefollowingprogress.1.Nostudentand/orfacultyspeakerexchangeshappenedthisyear,butthestagehasbeensetforaprobabletwonextacademicyear;ourtargetof4totaltalkswastoooptimisticatsoearlyastage.2.WeawardedaMathematicsMajorscholarshiptotheonlyincomingtransferMathematicsMajorscholarshipfromthoseinstitutions;wedidaswellwiththistargetasthegraduatingclassesallowed.3.WeweresuccessfulingettingthatonegraduatingMathematicsstudenttovisittheMSUcampusandjoinourdepartmentfor2011‐2012(whichheprobablywouldhavedoneanyway);wedidaswellwiththistargetasthegraduatingclassesallowed.4.Asexpected,atthisearlystageandwithnofunds,therewasnojointmeeting.

WewereunsuccessfulinthedifficulttaskofhiringafacultymemberwithaDoctorateinMathematicsEducation(butwewereextremelyclose).WewilltryagainthisnextyearandIhavegoodhopeofbeingsuccessful.WewereabletohireaMathematicsEducatorwithaMaster'sdegreeinMathematicsforouropenLecturerposition.ThisnewLecturerwillserveascoordinatorofourcourseworkforElementaryandMiddleSchoolEducation(MAT115,MAT215,MAT305,MAT399)andbeinvolvedinK‐12educationalgrantsandinitiativesatthelocal,state,andnationallevel.Healreadyhassomeexcellentideasforthosecoursesforthecomingyear,andheisleadingourdepartment'seffortsinMSU'sSenateBillIgrantmuchbetterthanwewouldbedoingwithouthim.ThispastyearwedidincreasethenumberofsectionsofMAT115offeredfrom3to4,sothattheclasssizesarenowdownto30studentsperclass.Inaddition,thispastyearweresearchedtheprerequisitesofotherinstitutionsinthestateandregionforthestandardMAT115andMAT215(MathematicsforElementaryandMiddleTeachersI&II);wefoundthatourprerequisiteswereamongtheweakestandsowedevelopedmoreappropriateprerequisitesforthesecoursesandtheAcademicCouncilapprovedthemforimplementationinFall2011.Finally,thedepartmentpaysfortheteachingofMAT305and399ontheHopkinsvillecampustohelpafledglingMiddleSchool2+2programgetstarted.Forthisgoal,weachievedthetargetofhiringtheMathematicsEducatorwithaMaster'sdegreeinMathematicsascoordinatorforMAT115,andweloweredtheclasssizesMAT115.Theremainingtargetsarenotmeasurableuntilseveralyearshavepassed.Aboveandbeyondthesetargets,wealsoalignedourprerequisitesforMAT115andMAT215withthoseofotherinstitutionsinthestateandregion.

Ataskforcemetthroughouttheyeartogatherinformationaboutothersimilarprograms,includingfeesforfaculty‐andstudent‐taughtlessons,othercourse/ensembleofferings,andnatureofthedirector'sposition.Wewillneedadirectorwhohandlesthemoney,thescheduling,andthePRforthisprogram.Itmaybepossibletocombinethiswithanotheradministrativeassignment,butafacultymemberwithafull‐timeteachingloadwillnothavethetimetorunthecommunitymusicschool.Itwilltakesomeonenew.InFall2010weofferedaguitarclassoncampusforbeginners.Inspring2011wenegotiatedwithNorthCallowayElementarySchooltobeginafter‐schoolviolinclassesforelementarystudentsatthatschooltaughtbyanMSUstudent.Lessonsoncampustaughtbyfacultyandupperclassstudentscontinuetobeoffered,yetallareseparatelyfundedandmanagedbyeachteacher.Itwilltakeaprogramdirectortopullthisprojecttogether.AsthisCommunityMusicSchool(newnameTBD)continuestogrow,thepotentialfornewtownandgownrelationshipswilldevelop.WecanservetheK‐12studentsandadultsofthecommunityaswellasourstudentsthroughvisibleandviableendeavorssuchasthis.Everyonebenefitsfromourinitiative.

Innovation Todeveloptwointerviewroomswithvirtual/web‐basedinterviewtechnologiesthathavebothliveandrecordedcapabilities.

TheOSHdepartmentresearchedandcontactedvendorsofvirtual/webbasedinterviewtechnologies.Afterselectingavendorseveraltrainingsessionswereconducted.Bythefall1010semester,twointerviewroomswithintheOSHdepartmentwereelaboratelyremodeled(furniture,carpet,blindsandpaint)andequippedwithvirtual/webbasedtechnologies(flatscreenTV/largeremotescreen,webcams,microphonesandlaptopcomputers,projectorsandappropriatesoftware).Bothroomsarenowutilizedforbothtraditionalinterviewrooms,aswellasvirtual/web‐basedinterviewsforthosecompaniesunabletocometotheMurrayStatecampus.Inthespring2011semester,severaltrialrunswereconductedonthevirtual/webbasedinterviewsystemwiththesoftwaresupplier.Bytheendofthesemester,thesystemwasfunctioningforusewithcompanieswantingtorecruitoccupationalsafetyandhealthinternsandgraduates.Theinterviewrooms,bothinthetraditionalandweb‐basedmodes,wereutilizedinplacingover80internsforthesummer2011semesterandaveryhighplacementrateofMay/August2011

AninitialmeetingbetweenrepresentativesfromCNAInsuranceandtheOSHdepartmentwasconductedearlyfall2010semester.RepresentativesfromCNAInsuranceincludedMr.BillBoyd,SeniorVice‐PresidentofRiskControl,andJoeWallace,DirectorofRiskControlofU.S.InsuranceOperations.Severalphoneconversationsfollowedtheinitialmeeting.Thepurposeofthemeetingwastodevelopcollaborativeopportunitiesforresources,donations,training,internshipsandfull‐timepositions.Inthefall2010semester,CNAInsuranceprovidedthecourseexpensesforanOSHgraduatestudenttoattendafallprotectiontrainingprograminMinnesota.Inthespring2011semester,CNAInsurancecommittedtoanannualscholarshipdonationof$8,000totheOSHdepartmentatMurrayState.The$8,000wasdistributedasfollows:$4,000toanOSHgraduatestudent(ThisstudentwillalsobeinterningwithCNAInsurancethissummer.);$2,000toanOSHundergraduatestudentinterningwithaninsurancecompany;and$2,000toanOSHundergraduatestudentinterestedintheloss/riskcontrolfield.TwoOSHgraduatestudentswhograduatedinMay2011haveacceptedfull‐timepositionswithCNAinsuranceintheChicagoandNashvillelocations.OneOSHgraduatestudentisinterningwithCNAinsuranceinNashvilleduringthesummer2011semester.TheOSHdepartmentwillcontinuetobuilditspartnershipwithCNAInsuranceinthecontinuedcollaborationofthedevelopment/advancementoftheFallProtectionDemonstrationLaboratory;throughCNA’scontinuedsupportofOSHstudentswithitsannualscholarship;andtheappointmentofOSHstudentsinfull‐timepositionsandinternshipswithCNA.

TheDepartmentappliedforapprovalasasponsorofcontinuingeducationprogramsformentalhealthprofessionals.TheBoardofExaminersinPsychologygrantedthisapprovalinMarch,2011.Sincethatapproval,threecontinuingeducationprogramshavebeenheld(TheHighsandLowsofLifeasaMurrayStateUniversityMen’sBasketballFan,March24;ThePainofRejection:BreakingandRestoringBondswithOthers,April7;andUsingtheReyMemoryTestswithChildrenandAdults,April2;eachwithgreaterattendancethanthepreviousevent.Atotalof32hoursofCEcredithavebeenawarded,free‐of‐charge,toregionalprovidersofmentalhealthservices.WehavealreadyscheduledourfirsteventfortheFall,2011schedule.OnSeptember9,wewillhostaworkshoponeatingdisordersforlocalcounselors/therapistsandclinicalpsychologygraduatestudents.

Innovation Instituteanewevaluationsystemforthetwodirectorsofthetwoprogramsinthedepartment.

DuringtheschoolyearaProgramEvaluationCommitteewasformed,madeupoftworepresentativeseachfromtheSocialWorkandCriminalJusticePrograms.Thiscommitteewaschargedwiththeresponsibilityofdevelopinganevaluationinstrumentthatwouldbepresentedtotheentirefaculty,includingthetwodirectorswhoseperformancewouldeventuallybeassessed.TheProgramEvaluationCommitteeexaminedtheevaluationinstrumentsusedinseveraldifferentdepartmentsandproducedaproduct,whichwasfullydiscussedintwofacultymeetingsdevotedjusttothisissue.ThefinalizedinstrumentwasapprovedbythefacultyandadministeredinlateApril.Theissueofconfidentialitywasacentralconcernamonganumberofdepartmentmembers.TheEvaluationCommittee,assistedsomewhatbythedepartmentchair,developedthefollowingproceduresforadministeringthequestionnaire.First,eachfacultymember(excludingthechairandthetwodirectors)wasinstructedtopickupacopyofthequestionnaireinstrumentfromthedepartmentadministrativeassistant.Someofthequestionsontheinstrumentwereclosedendedandsomewereopenedended.Second,responsestotheopenendedquestionsweretobetypedtoavoidspecifichandwritingbeingrecognized.ItwasdecidedbytheentirefacultythatthemembersoftheEvaluationCommitteewouldalsowriteareportbasedontheresultsoftheevaluation.AnexcellentsuggestionwasmadebythechairoftheEvaluationCommittee,thatthetwocriminaljusticemembersofthecommitteewouldwriteuptheresultsfortheDirectoroftheSocialWorkProgram,andthetwosocialworkmembersofthecommitteewouldwriteupthereportbasedontheresultsfortheDirectoroftheCriminalJusticeProgram.Third,thedepartmentaladministrativeassistantwouldplayanimportantroleinthisprocess,inasmuchasshewouldmakesureeachfacultymemberreceivedaquestionnaire(theassistantkeptasigneddocumentwhereeachfacultymemberindicatedhe/shereceivedtheinstrument).Inonecasewhereafacultymemberturnedinawrittenresponsetotheopenendedquestions,theadministrativeassistanttypedthematerialover.Finally,theassistantreceivedandrecordedthereturnedquestionnaire.Shealsomadesurethequestionnairedatawaskeptunderlockandkey.

Progresstowardthisgoalisstillaworkinprogress.IthasbeendeterminedthatthefirstcoursethatwillbepitchedtolocalhighschoolsisSWK225(HumanDiversity).Thisisaclassthatincludesinterestingandtimelymaterial,inasmuchasitcoverstheissuesofrace,ethnicity,gender,sexualorientation,socialclass,age,anddisability.HumanDiversityistheclassinourdepartmentthathasdrawnthemosthighschoolstudentsfromtheBridgeProgram(nowknownasRacerAcademy)hereoncampus.DiscussionsareongoingwithMayfieldHighSchool(locatedinMayfield,KY)aboutofferingthediversityclassinthe2011‐2012schoolyear.Thereisonlyaslimchancethatthiscoursewillbeofferedinthefallof2011andabetterchancethatitwillbepresentedinthespringsemesterof2012.

TheSecretShopperProgramstartedinFebruaryof2011andranthroughthethirdweekofApril.Theprogramtookplaceindiningonly.TheUniversityStorewillbedoingtheirSSprogramintheFallof2011.Theprogramwentwell.Thereweresix(6)studentswhoparticipatedintheprogram.Theresultswereverypositive.Afullsummaryoftheprogramisavailableforreview.WeareplanningtorepeatthisprojectagaineitherintheFallof2011orSpring2012.

Thisgoalwillnotbetotallyachievedthisyear.PlanninganddevelopmenttookplacefromSeptemberthroughApril.Unfortunatelywhentheprojectwascompletedandreadytogoouttobid,itexceededthebudgetallotmentof$600K.TherewasaclearunderstandingofcostandcompetentcostsrightuptillAprilwhen"outoftheblue"theprojectmechanicalandelectricalscopeincreasedbyalmost$100K.Atthispointwehaveconvenedanothermeetingwiththearchitectandarepursuingtheprojectfornextsummer.Wehaveaskedthearchitecttogobackanddesignaprogramthatgivesusalltheelementswearehadintheoriginaldesignbuttoputitwithinbudget.Thegoalistobidtheprojectearlyinthefallof2011forconstructioninsummer2012.Thescopewillremainat$600K.

WeconductedaCampusDiningCustomerSatisfactionSurveyinNovemberof2010.Thesurveywascompletedby1404customersofwhich94%werestudents.71%werefemaleand29%weremale.63%wereon‐campuscustomerswhile37%wereoff‐campus.Thegapofparticipationwasprettyevenat30%beingfreshman,23%sophomores,23%juniors,16%seniors,7%graduates.Acopyofthesurveyresultsisavailableuponrequest.Weplantoconductthissurveyagaininthefallof2011.

IIShascontractedwiththeSimplicityCorporationtoimplementatechnology‐basedmanagementsystemsolutionforstudyabroad.ThepackageisfullyoperationalnowandisallowingtheStudyAbroadOfficetomanageallstudyabroadprogramsonline.Thesoftwarehasthecapabilitytoalsomanageeducationalexchangeprogramsandthisfeaturewillbeexecutedthissummer.Asfarasinternationalstudentrecruitmentisconcerned,weareusingHobsons,aclientrelationsmanagement(CRM)solution,tocommunicatewithandrecruitprospectiveinternationalstudents.Furthermore,theinternationaladmissionsofficehasnowbecomepaperlessinthemajorityofitsoperations.However,Bannerlimitationshavepreventedusfromtotallygoingpaperlessinthisarea.

AstrategicgoalforIIShasbeentoopentheLatinAmericanmarket.IIShaspartneredwiththeCollegeofScience,EngineeringandTechnologytooffer,incooperationwithQualityLeadershipUniversity(Panama),thebachelor'sdegreeintelecommunicationssystemsmanagementinPanama.TheproposalispendingapprovalfromtheNationalSecretariatforScience,TechnologyandInnovation(SENACYT),aPanamaniangovernmentagency.ArecentvisitbyDr.DunntoSENACYTismovingtheproposalforwardwithanexpectedstartingdateinSpring2012.ThisinitiativeisexpectedtoincreasenewinternationalstudentenrollmentsatMurrayStatebyapproximately30studentsperyear(oncetheprojectmovestotheMSUphase).Partnershipswithothercollegesarebeingworkedout.Forinstance,IISisworkingonanapplicationforaConfuciusInstitute,whichwillpartnerIIS,LudongUniversity(China),andtheCollegeofHumanitiesandFineArtsforitsimplementation.

WorkwiththePaducahAreaChamberofCommercetosupportfundingforaMSUPaducahRegionalCampus.By10‐31‐10,developaplanandobtaincostandtimingestimatesforacomprehensivedataupdateforouralumniandfrienddatabase(ONE)withaspecificfocusonaddressupdates,cellphonenumberacquisition,e‐mailaddressacquisition,completinglostalumnirecords,apossiblewealthcodeinsertionintorecords,andmatchinggiftupdates.Itisestimatedthatthisprocesswillcost$15‐20,000andtake60‐90daysoncestarted.Thisinnovativeprojectwouldbethefirsttimethatamajorscrub"orupdatehasoccurredin8‐9yearsforouralumni

MurrayStatePaducahCampushelpedestablishanewfacilityinPaducahasatoppriorityforthePaducahChamberofCommerceEducationpriorities.ThisfocushelpedmotivatetheCityandCountyGovernmentstosupportfundingforanewfacilitytobeconstructedinPaducahinthenextcoupleofyears.ThisgoalhasbeenachievedbycontractingwithafirmduringFY2011andobtainingmorethan8000newe‐mailaddressesduringthepastfewmonthswhichbringsustomorethan33,000e‐mailaddressesinouralumni/friendsdatabaseofmorethan65,000.Second,wehaveobtainedmorethan4800newcellphonenumberstoenhanceourRacer‐thonphoningsystem.Third,wehaveadedicatedstaffthatcontinuouslymonitorsandupdatesalumnirecords(everyday)inordertoachieveourgoalsinthisarea.Lastly,wehavemanagedandupdatedthedatabaseformailingsandformanyotheruniversityusessecuringa95%+successrateonmailings.

Assetforthbyfederalguidelines,wemustensurethat75%ofprogramparticipantswillpersistfromoneacademicyeartothenext.Basedondatafrom09/10to10/11,theSSSretentionrateofparticipantswas80%.Therefore,weachievedthisobjective.ThisobjectivewasmetthroughacademicservicesprovidedbySSS.FromtheinitialTripleIPlanningReport,weanticipatedimplementinganewonlineversionofourprogressreport.Theprogressreportisonemeasureofpersistenceattheinstitution.Itgivesprofessorsanopportunitytoletusknowhowourparticipantsaredoinginclassesandallowsusanopportunitytocontactthemregardingtheirprogress.Intryingtoimplementthetotallyonlineversion,weranintotechnical/securityissues.Therefore,wehadtoimprovisewithapartialonlineform.Althoughitisnotwhatweinitiallyenvisioned,theimprovisedmethodworkedwellandyieldedmorefeedbackthanwenormallyreceive.Inthefuture,IwouldliketotakemeasurestoworkmorecloselywithCarmenintheRetentionOfficetostreamlinethisprocessandalsopossiblymaketheprogressreportavailabletoinstructorsthroughMyGate(muchliketheavailabilityoftheRetentionAlertform).

Duringthefallsemester,SSSimplementedanEmergingLeaderProgram.Eightstudentswerechosentoparticipateintheinauguralgroup.OurgoalwastoconductacommunityserviceprojectthatwouldinvolvetheEmergingLeadersandtheentireSSSpopulation.Thisgoalwasmetduringthespringsemester.Throughoutthefallandspringsemesters,theEmergingLeadersgroupmettoconductbusinessanddiscussleadershipdevelopment.Additionally,thegroupelectedtoworkwiththeCallowayCountyHumaneSocietytoconductanadoptiondrive.ThegrouppromotedtheeventwithinSSSandoneSaturdayduringthespring,fiveemergingleaders,sixSSSparticipants,andtwostaffmettotakephotosofadoptablepets,givebaths,andhangpostersthroughoutthecommunity.Althoughthegroupwassmall,weconsideredtheeventasuccessandtheHumaneSocietywasappreciativeofthesupport.Inthefuture,IwouldliketoseetheEmergingLeadersbranchoutintothecommunityanddomorethanoneprojectandreallypromotetheeventswithinSSSandperhapsthecampuscommunitytohavealargescalecommunityproject.

WeproposedtopursueprivatesupporttosupplementMSU'sexistinginvestmentinURSAprograms,butneededahigh‐quality,full‐colorbrochurecreatedtopromotesuch.Unfortunately,noadditionalresourceswereprovidedforthispurpose.$1500hadbeenrequested.

UniversityBookstore

Innovation DiningServicesandtheUniversityStorewillcollaborateonanextensiveSecretShopperProgramincooperationwithGlenMangoldoftheMarketingandBusinessDepartment.

TheSecretShopperSurveywasdeveloped,butthefocusgroupwasuncomfortableshoppingandscoringthedepartmentsofthebookstorethattheywereunfamiliarwithorthattheywouldnotnormallyshop.Alistofeverydayquestionswasdevelopedforeachdepartment,buttheyrequestedtheprojecthaveafreshstartintheFall2011semester.OnAugust15,IamtomeetwithGlennMangold.Hewillintroducemetoanotherprofessorthathefeelscanpossiblyusethisasaclassproject.HesuggestedthatImeetwiththestudentstodevelopaplanandansweranyquestionstheymayhave,whereoriginallyweweretryingtokeepthemanonymous.IfeelthatIcaneasetheirconcernsaboutshoppinginareasandaskingquestionsaboutproductsandservicestheyareunfamiliarwith.ThenextstepwillbetoaskourStudentAdvisoryBoardtohelpwiththeproject.

ThisyearhasbeenpackedwithspecialeventswheretheUniversityStorehaspartneredwithstudentandGreekorganizations,departments,vendorsandthecommunity,givingustheopportunitytopromoteourproductandservices.WehaveupdatedourFacebookdailyandnowhaveafanbaseof1610.ForstudentandGreekorganizations,wehavedoneeventslikeManicMondaywherethePre‐Physical/OccupationalTherapyClubdidlivemannequinmodelinginexchangeforhelpingwiththeirclub'st‐shirts.ThisyearweworkedhardtoassistSigmaAlphaIotawiththeAllCampusSingeventaswellassupportingtheSGAbyupdatingthecampusplannerthattheyshareintheproceedsof.Weprovidedthet‐shirtsfortheRacerGirl'scampanddoorprizesfortheStudentHealthFairandmuchmore.WehavepartneredwithdepartmentaleventssuchasDunker'sChallenge,SeniorSalute,AlumniAffair'sHomecomingT‐Shirtdesigncontest,andtheCurrisCenterFallFestivalwithourDr.Seussevent.WehavepartneredwiththeUniversityLibrariestosellsuppliesinthelibraryforthestudent'sconvenience.Wereceivedthe2011ConnectionAwardforoutstandingparticipation,partneringwithvendorstosaveourstudentsmoney.WepartneredwithNebraskaBookCompanytoprovidetextbooktitlesforrentthatarenotavailablewithourinhouseprogramandwithTeamFanShopstoprovideanupdatedwebpresenceforon‐lineapparelpurchases.OurOneDayWithoutShoeseventconnectedustothecommunityaswellasstudents,facultyandstaff.WearealsoworkingwiththeCallowayCountyPublicLibrarytoencouragestudentstojointheTeenSummerReadingprogrambysupplyingourtopsellingt‐shirt.

TheUniversityStoresuccessfullypartneredwithdepartmentsandtheirfacultytoprovide21inhouserentaltitlesforFall2010.FortheSpringof2011weadded8moretitleswhichfellshortofourgoalofadding10‐11.Inordertoprovidemorevaluetoourstudents,wepartneredwithNebraskaBookandwereabletosupply14additionaltitlesforthespring.OurgoalforFall2011istohave42inhouserentaltitles.Todatewehaveadded11,whichbringsusto40inhouserentals‐‐2shortofourgoal.WewillcontinuetoworkwithNebraskaBookinordertoprovidemoretitlestoourstudents,butwefeelconfidentthatasneweditionsarereleasedtherewillbemoreparticipationinourinhouseprogram.

TheUpwardBoundBridgestudentSoundtrackProject.Thisprojectaddressesthefollowingacademiccomponents:creativewriting,self‐assessment,publicspeaking,integrationofcomputerandtechnologyskills,andreflectivedecision‐making.Ninetypercentofthebridgestudentswillcompleteandpresenttheirsoundtrackproject.StudentsweregiventheguidelinesfortheprojectinAugust2010,andwillcompletetheprojectbyJanuary2011.

Topreparefirstgenerationhighschoolstudentsforasuccessfultransitionintopostsecondaryeducation.

Eightypercentofthe2010‐2011UpwardBoundstudentsattendingSaturdayCollegemeetingswillparticipateinwritingworkshops.WorkshopswillbeconductedduringmonthlySaturdayColleges,AugustthruMarch,foratotalofsevenmeetings.Studentswillresearch,writeortype,andsubmittheirworkduringSaturdayColleges.Therewillberoomforimprovementbaseduponstaffcritic,peerreview,self‐reflection,andgroupdiscussion.Staffcriticwilloccurduringandaftermeetings,allowingforcorrectionsandthendiscussedwithstudentsatthenextSaturdayCollege.Completion‐100%ofstudentsparticipatedinsomeformofwritingworkshop.Studentsdiddifferentactivitiesbasedupontheassignedproject.Timewasallowedforstudentstocompletetheassignmentduringthemeetingtime.Staffthenevaluatedthewrittenwork,correctedit,madesuggestions,andreturnedittothestudentsatthenextmeeting.OurJanuarymeetingwascancelledduetoweather.Studentsparticipatedinwritingassignmentssixtimesthisacademicyear.Studentsinvolvedinthesummerprogramareincorporatingwritingintotheirclassestheyaretaking.IknowtheyareutilizingtheirwritingskillsintheReadingclassalongwiththeircareerclassandsomeoftheirothercourses.

Innovation Innovation WhiteCollegesponsoredaCollegeWritingSeriesinthefallof2010tointroducefreshmentotheconventionsofacademicwritingandcriticalthinking.Themainpurposewastointroducestudentstotheconventionsofacademicwritingandcriticalthinking.Thegoalwastogivethemenoughpracticewritingsothattheywouldbecomemoreeffectivewritersbytheendofthesemesterthantheywereatthestart.100%ofstudentsmadeadequateprogress.Twentyfivestudentswereenrolled.Outoftwentyfive,nineteenstudentsscored90‐100,andsixstudentsscored80‐89.Studentquestionnairewasusedtoevaluatethecourse.92%ofstudentssaidthatthefacultywasveryeffectiveinteachingthiscourse.96%ofstudentssaidthatthefacultystimulatedtheirinterestinthesubject.88%ofstudentswouldchoosetotakeanotherCollegeWritingCourseinthefallof2011,whereas12%wouldnot.

WhiteCollegesponsoredaSexualAssaultAwarenessPrograminthefallsemester.Participantswereencouragedtovoicetheirviewsandconcernsonthesubjectandengagedinactivitiesinordertounderstandsexualassault.58studentsandfacultyparticipated.Thegoaloftheworkshopwastoprovidestudentswithavailableresourcesandassistanceinimplementingandexecutingsexualassaultpreventionandresponsepolicies.Preliminaryevaluationshowedpromisingresultsregardingincreaseinparticipants’likelihoodtosaytheywouldmakechangesincommunityandbewillingtointerruptininstancesofsexualharassment.Theprogramwasscientificallyevaluatedand92%ofstudentssaidthattheprogramwasveryeffectiveregardingchangesinknowledge,attitudesandbehavior.

WhiteCollegeofferedaFocusProgram(Cookout,SlipandSlide,ScavengerHunt,andIceCreamSocialetc.)duringGreatBeginningsandintheearlyweeksoffallsemestertohelpnewstudentsbecomeacquaintedwithreturningstudentsandfaculty/staff.Thegoalsweretoexpandopportunitiesforfreshmenandsophomorestomeetmoreupper‐classstudentsandgraduatestudentsandtoparticipateinabroaderrangeofcollege‐basedacademicandnonacademicprograms.254students,faculty,parents,alumni,andcommutersparticipated.Thepurposesweretofacilitatestudenttransitionsintotheacademicandsocialcommunitiesoftheuniversityandtopromotestudentgrowthandleadership.Overall,3oftheprograms(allofwhichwereevaluatedwithexperimentalresearchdesigns)thatfocusedonimprovingsocialskillshadameasurablebeneficialimpact,butsomeprogramsweremoreeffectivethanothers.Asophomoresaid,“Residentialcollegesmaybeagoodoptionformeetingstudentsaswellascreatingincreasedchancesofgraduationforcollegestatistics.”
