Nursing services are critical to achieve optimal health system, performance and goal. Scientific and technological advancement, knowledgeexplosion, emerging health problems, new diagnostic and treatment modalities, evidence – based nursing practices, managerial skills in health care administration, health awareness and expressiveness of the consumers pose a great challenges in nursing service administration and management. Thus, equipping the nursing personnel with relevant knowledge, skills and attitude is of utmost important to meet these challenges. I am confident enough that students will strive to gain the qualities and develop abilities successfully discharging their roles and responsibilities in rendering quality care in future. THE FAMILY – OUR FIRST COMMUNITY, UNIT OF HEALTH SERVICES.

Maître Chaudhuri, Registrar, TNC, Agartala. Human being is the greatest creature in this Universe. Alone in the cold, real world, we did not have a chance to survive. Luckily we were born into fami lies who cared and accepted this important creature. We are social beings who need to live in community with others – we need to belong to society. The Family is the first community – the first place where we feel a sense of belonging and security. We need to work together, a pride in group achievement, and thus we learn to live within a structure. Definition of a Family:-

The family is a group of two or more persons related by birth, marriage, or adoption and residing together in a household. It is a social group characterized by common residence, economic co-operation and reproduction.

Forms of Family:-

i) Nuclear family consists of the husband, wife and one or more children.

ii) Joint family consists of parents and children together with their spouses and children live together with certain communalities such as income, food or premises.

iii) Matriarchal family where the mother takes the role of leader and decision maker.

iv) One – parent family, the single parent plays a double role, lacks adult companionship and has to be self – reliant.

v) A foster family is a family that has chosen to offer thebenefits of family life and love to one who is not their own.

Importance of family love:-

Every one belongs to a family.

Our first and deepest experience of love is within the family.

The family is capable of making an individual conscious of his or her personal dignity.

Family standards influence personal behavior and achievement

Healthy and happy family reaches out to others and makes a difference.

Characteristics of healthy family:-

Healthy family characterized by:

A sense of togetherness that promotes capacity to change.

Nurturance and resource for growth and sustenance.

Stability andintegrity of structure.

A balance between mutual and independent action on the part of family members.

Role of a family:-

Family act as a role model for child socialization, child care, as provider, housekeeper, kinship, sexual role, therapeutic and recreation.

Functions of family:-

Duvall & Miller (1985) identifiedsix Family functions that are generally applicable to all types of family structure as follows: -

Generating affection.

Providing personal security and acceptance.

Giving satisfaction and sense of purpose.

Ensuring continuity of companionship.

Providing social placement.

Imposing control and sense of what is right.

Within the family, members first learn the rules, rights, obligations and responsibilities, characteristics of human societies.

Family as a unit of community health services:-

Since Community health nursing advocates the promotion of family health, it has been considered as a unit of Community Health Nursing Practice with the following reasons:

Family is a natural and fundamental unit of Society, because all members of community belong to the family.

Family as a group generates, prevents, tolerates, and /or corrects all the problems including health problem.

An interaction between the family members reinforces the members to maintain conducive environment to maintain good health.

Family acts as a central point of decision making in all aspects of family affairs.

Family is an effective and available channel for most of the community nursing services.

Nursing process in family health:-

*Assessment: Family health assessment will be done by collecting relevant basic information.

* Nursing Diagnosis: The diagnostic label include family’s health needs, current and potential health problems, level of wellness etc.

* Planning: Planning and goal setting must be mutual, concrete, realistic, and compatible with the developmental stage acceptable to family members.

* Implementation: Interventions are strategies that help families adjust goal or are the process by which the family attains them. Do the thing s that family cannot do for itself.

* Evaluation: Comparing the response of the family with predetermined outcome.
