Hello Bishop Manogue Alumni, Friends, and Family:

As we come to the end of our Alumni Association’s third year, I am reminded of all the wonderful moments we have had together and created for our current student body. We truly are blessed to be a part of a community that gives us the opportunity to care for each other and support the success of the students who now hold the seats we did in years past.

This Christmas season I was reminded of the importance of having an open heart. Mary and Joseph were asked to have this very thing so many years ago and Jesus became the living example of what it means to have a heart open to what God is asking of us. Pope Francis continues to model for us kindness, compassion, and humbleness as he embraces others across the globe. As we enter a new year, my hope is that we as a community open our hearts to those who need love the very most, so that we are living those lessons through our lives, every day.

On behalf of all our Bishop Manogue alumni, I wish you blessing and joy in this new year. I look forward to seeing you at our events in 2015, and welcome any who might want to get involved in the Alumni Association…just email us at [email protected]. It’s going to be an exciting year!

Football and floats and family. Cars and cleats and queens. Food and friends and Forever Manogue.

This year, Manogue celebrated an Under Where Homecoming, and our dress up theme days really did bring out a little bit of everything: Under the Sea mer-maids and snorkels galore; Under the Stars (campers AND space aliens?); Under Construction (hard hats and coveralls everywhere); and Under the Bed (think monsters… and dust bunnies).

At our Bonfire, Scott Hinxman was crowned king and at halftime of the football game, Maura Cassidy was crowned queen. We were thrilled to welcome nearly 150 alumni to our End Zone Barbecue on game day (when the Miners topped the Douglas Tigers 18 to 13). Our students danced the night away at the homecoming dance, capping a week of activities that included rollers skating, movie night, and sporting events.

We love homecoming. It’s our biggest and best family reunion and we’re already looking forward to next year.

It ’s A Little BitOf Everything

Class of ‘64Nifty Fifty! Hats Off to Kathy Pistone Schopper who was on a mission to find all of her classmates for this 50th reunion, which was held July 18-20. She used Facebook, email, old phone numbers, word-of-mouth, and maybe a little tiny bit of good old-fashioned stalking to track them all down and replace outdated information. In the end she found the whereabouts of all but 9 of her 83 classmates. WOW.

And then the fun started. The group held a cocktail and pizza party at the Tamarack Junction on Friday night.

They took over the Coney Island for dinner on Saturday, sharing stories of

Manogue days, of course, and of their doings over the 50 years since. And on Sunday, they gathered at Bishop Manogue — a different campus than the one they attended, but home nonetheless. They enjoyed a tour of the school and a barbecue lunch on the alumni plaza, where they found their bricks and wound down an amazing weekend.

Class of ‘74The youngsters of ’74 held a summer reunion as well. They had a party at Napa Sonoma on Aug. 22, and then a Coney Island dinner on August 23. According to Muffy Vernon Miller about half of the class was able to attend one or both events… not too bad for 40 years out! Pictures don’t lie and this group had a whole bunch of fun!

Class of ‘84While they are under the delusion that they are still young, the Class of ’84 held their 30th reunion during home-

coming, Oct. 3 and 4. The crew had a great time catching up at BuBinga Lounge on Friday night, and on Saturday attended Mass on campus and

the End Zone barbecue—thanks for the set up help, ’84! Later that evening they got together at good old Brickies Tavern before the UNR/Boise game.

Class of ‘94Homecoming weekend was also the stage for ’94 to celebrate their 20th. Friday night found them at the Biggest Little City club, and the next day they attended the End Zone barbecue at the football game with their fellow alumni from all classes. That night they headed back downtown to enjoy cocktails and appetizers at Heritage inside the Whitney Peak Hotel.

Class of ‘04These folks really ARE still young, celebrating their first reunion since graduating from Bishop Manogue 10 short years ago. On Oct. 4, they were front and center support-ing classmate Thomas Peregrin in his first-ever homecoming game as head coach of the Manogue football team. That night they had a great time, and a great dinner, at Louie’s Basque Corner.

Missing MinersBishop Manogue Catholic High School Alumni Association is launching a Missing Miners Campaign to recon-nect with alumni and friends. Using our website, social media, email, and the good old fashioned telephone we’re hoping to locate and welcome back our Missing Miners!

“With a 66 year history, maintaining contact with our constituents has become a challenge,” said Alumni Association Presi-dent Stacey Ting-Senini. “There are many exciting new things happening at Bishop Manogue, and a growing number of opportunities for former students to connect, network, and get involved. We want our Missing Miners to hear about those things and we would appreciate your help finding them.”

Visit our Missing Miners webpage at www.bishopmanogue.org/MissingMiners to view lists of lost alumni and friends. You can update your contact information and tell us a little about what you’ve been up to via the online form. Forward the link to friends you find on the list as well, so they can reconnect, too.

And, we promise, Bishop Manogue will never sell or distribute your information to any outside company or individual. It’s all in the family!

On Nov. 7, the Parents Association held its annual Green and Gold fundraiser. The whole school got into the act this year, with faculty tending bar, and students selling raffle tickets and serving a delicious family-style Basque feast to more than 300 guests. The event raised approximately $75,000 to support academics and student activities.

Manogue math maven Anne Wieland was called away from the beer station she was manning at the event to be honored with the second annual Manogue “Make It Happen Award.” Principal Rick Harris cited her enthusiasm, creativity, and genuine love for her students, along with her no-nonsense approach: “She is kind-hearted and compassionate. But when it’s time to learn…that’s what you do.”

Quotes from her students make it apparent that they appreciate her too:

“Mrs. Wieland genuinely cares about her students.  She’s always available to talk to/get help, any time of the day.”

“Mrs. Wieland is very organized, hardly anything ever slips by her.  This makes her extremely trustworthy, and foolproof.”

“Whenever I’m headed to my 2nd period Calculus class, I’m extremely excited to get there and learn.  Mrs. Wieland strives for nothing but the best, which is something I admire about her.  She will truly do everything in her power to help you succeed.”

“She makes her classes entertaining, with always having a set agenda.”

“Her stick-pulling is a tradition every student who’s had her never forgets.”

Wieland has been teaching for 38 years—the last 25, luckily, at Bishop Manogue. She was joined at the event by her children Mark Wieland ’05 and Katharine Wieland Cafazza ’02, and son-in-law Vince Cafazza.

More than 100 golfers turned out for the 2014 Jim Williams Miner Golf Classic at Montreux in September, helping raise a tournament-record $64,000 for the school’s Tuition Assistance fund. Our boys and girls golf teams were on hand to hit drives for teams needing a little edge, and several generous donors provided food and refreshments

along the course. At the end of the very beautiful fall day the foursomes enjoyed lunch by Roundabout Catering.

Many thanks to Stan Jaksik and Montreux, our food and drink donors, and all of our players. Mark your calendars for Sept. 14, 2015 and plan to be a part of next year’s event!

dear team:…a fitting salutation and one I use pas-sionately. I suppose the extreme sports fan in me knows the value of teamwork in accomplishing a common goal, and at Bishop Manogue, defining success is clear: shape citizens who will learn continuously, serve compassionately, and lead confidently.

The Bishop Manogue Team is like no other. We are tenacious and focused. Teachers, Ad-ministrators, Alumni Coaches, and Donors

are committed to helping students soar. None of us feels alone in this endeavor, and we, like our student body, learn, achieve, grow, share, and give every day.

Our Development Team is small but mighty, and we recognize the extraordi-nary commitment to philanthropy that already exists here for the benefit of our young scholars.

I’m inspired daily by the gifts of tuition assistance for our diverse student body, along with faithful support given to fac-ulty and youth ministries. And without question, building on the traditions of the past in order to help Bishop Manogue reach its full potential is a top priority.

Thank you for your kind welcome. I’m blessed to be part of this warm, caring community of families that give with their heart and generously serve in the most unselfish way. As God has called me to this new position, I delight in the idea of working hand in hand with all of you who have established a remarkable legacy at Bishop Manogue.

Please stop by and introduce yourself. I’d love to have you on our Team!

Warmly,

Annie Turner Director of Development

Bishop Manogue is very grateful for the many who support us. For a list of those supporters from the 2013-14 fiscal year, as well as a look at our annual financial summary, visit www.bishopmanogue.org/AnnualReport.

If you’d like to make a gift to Tuitions Assistance, our Annual Appeal or another Manogue cause, just visit www.bishop-manogue.org and click the DONATE NOW button. Other ways to give include Scholarships; Honorary and Memorial Gifts; Endowed Gifts; Stocks, Securities and Other Real Prop-erty, and Insurance Policies.

Major Gifts Will Make a Difference to ManyWe have recently been blessed with two especially generous gifts. The first comes from the Donald W. Reynolds Founda-tion in the form of $500,000 to establish The Barbara Smith Campbell Student and Faculty Excellence Endowment.

Those endowment funds will be focused on attracting and retaining both excellent faculty and top students, and will

honor Campbell’s service as a long-time Trustee of the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation and dedicated board member and supporter of Bishop Manogue. Half of the endowment’s annual earnings will be used to fund faculty participation in top pro-fessional development and training programs while the other half will provide merit-based financial aid to qualified students.

"Great teachers help create great leaders,” stated Campbell. “Look no further than our governor Brian Sandoval, who is a BMCHS graduate. This gift will provide teacher summer sab-baticals at Yale, Stanford, and other high-caliber institutions, and will only add to the student experience."

According to Bishop Manogue Principal, Rick Harris, the new endowment will accelerate the achievement of teacher training goals already in place. “The best educators must not only be appreciated and compensated, but also challenged and stimu-lated. The Donald W. Reynolds Foundation and specifically Barbara Smith Campbell’s vision, presents exciting opportu-nities for Manogue students and faculty,” Harris said.

Headquartered in Las Vegas, the Donald W. Reynolds Foun-dation is a national philanthropic organization founded in 1954 by the late media entrepreneur for whom it is named.

The other gift comes from the Wilber D. May Foundation for the $808,000 nine-court Wilbur D. May Tennis Complex at Bishop Manogue. The complex opened Sept. 30, just in time for the Miner tennis team to hold home matches—the first-ever on-site matches in the school’s 66-year history. The complex was also the site of Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association regional play in October. As you can see, it’s made some folks VERY happy!

A Ask a student to name the centerpiece of our campus and the answer will be Christ the Teacher chapel. Yes, the

Knowledge Center is sleek and func-tional, and the Student Community Center is often where the action is, but it’s the chapel that not only draws to-gether our current students, but also ties our present campus to the past.

The instantly recognizable steeple and signature stained glass windows of Christ the Teacher chapel were trans-ported from “Manogue on the Hill,” the Valley Road campus that was the school’s home for nearly half a centu-ry—1957 to 2004. Those elements, plus a few others, were skillfully incorporated into the new worship space, and without question, the new chapel evokes the original—most especially through the arched, brick-lined, and vividly colored stained glass windows.

In 1957, a 17-year-old Hungarian girl named Isabel Piczek crafted those first, soaring, and riotously colored win-dows behind the altar, and then, with her sister Edith’s help, the smaller side windows that flank them. Undoubtedly, those windows have in some way made an impression on each of the more than 5,500 students who attended Manogue between 1957 and now, not to mention countless visitors. The Piczek sisters’ work is at once beautiful and startling—and remarkably timeless. Visitors find it hard to believe that the bold images were created some 50 years ago. Tell

them they were fashioned by a Hun-garian teenager who later went on to become a particle physicist (it’s true) and they are even more transfixed.

It could have been a problem that the new chapel’s dimensions called for four additional side windows, but perhaps by divine providence, Isabel and Edith Piczek (who has since passed away) were willing and able to create the stained glass that would fill them. When the four new windows were formally blessed by Bishop Calvo in the fall of 2008, Isabel Piczek herself was present and had these words to say:

“The opportunity very seldom presents itself in the life of an artist to continue an assignment started as a teenager and finishing it decades later. The place… becomes for the artist…a place of judgment and revelation. I face my earlier self, that seventeen-year-old girl, who stood in front of the empty openings of the tall windows at old Manogue, wondering if she is capable to do all this. At the time, however, I have already painted a large mural in one of the Vatican buildings in Rome, won the Interna-tional Grand Award for painting also in Rome and painted the big mural in your Cathedral here. But the tall windows at Manogue were my first, large stained glass windows…”

The beauty of those windows is one reason they still resonate, but there are other reasons as well. Each window tells

a bit of the Manogue story, some obvi-ously, as in the looming figure of Christ the Teach that anchors the space, and some more quietly, as in the window of Joseph the Worker, donated by the class of 1964 in memory of John Fitzgerald Kennedy. (See sidebar)

Art has long been used to teach and in-spire, as well as beautify, and beyond our fabulous windows, examples abound throughout our campus. There are several Icons, a traditional stylized form of art, throughout the building that serve as reminder of what makes Bishop Manogue tick. For instance:

• Jesus, the Divine Mercy, hanging over the central corridor reminds us that Jesus is the reason for our school.

• Christ the Teacher appropriately hangs in the academic wing.

• The Holy Family reminds us that our families are called to imitate them.

• The icons of St. Catherine of Si-ena and St. Thomas More near the Knowledge Center remind us of their principled courage and dedication to scholarship.

• St. John Baptist de la Salle, patron saint of teachers, hangs outside the teacher’s lounge.

• St. Cecilia, the patroness of music, is outside the music room.

Additional icons around the school include St. Maximilian Kolbe, St. Kateri Tekawitha, the Immaculate Conception, the Good Samaritan, St. Martin de Por-res, St. Vincent de Paul, St. Ignatius of Loyola, St. Brigid, and a Guardian angel icon. The majority were purchased for the school by generous donors.

Other meaningful art on campus in-cludes “Seeking the One,” a large paint-ing outside the main gym, of a youthful and athletic Christ; and “Hosanna” por-traying the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. Our gymnasiums are graced with reminders of our faith as well with large and beautiful handcraft-ed crosses, constructed and donated by an alumni parent.

But perhaps the most straightforward messages of faith for our students, staff, families, and visitors are two simple scripture passages over the doors separating the main corridor from the Knowledge Center. These passages remind us simply, “You are the light of the world…” and “You are the salt of the earth…”

You can see, then, how not only our curriculum and clubs, but also our windows and walls instruct our students with lessons of faith, compassion, prayerfulness, and action. Those stu-dents become alumni, and those alumni become citizens of the world, who color it with their love and brighten it with their many gifts.

1958Acclaimed Nevada author Patty Cafferata has written Christmas in Nevada, an historical account of

how the holiday has been celebrated in the state from 1858 to the present day. Some stories are told by well-known Nevadans, such as Samuel

Clemens (Mark Twain), Robert Laxalt, and former governors Bob List and Richard Bryan, but much more of the book shows ordinary Nevadans celebrating in diverse ways the wonders of the season. The collection includes a story from each of the state’s seventeen counties, and is illustrated with 57 photographs, many previously unpublished. Christmas in Nevada was released this Fall by the University of Nevada Press, www.unpress.nevada.edu.

He helped establish “Eyes of Hope,” a program with mobile eye care clinics that travel throughout the United States providing fee exams and glasses to those in need. He also served on the Sparks Planning Commission from 1980 until 1994, and is a member of the Washoe County District Board of Health, a position he has held since 2002. (And, his grandson, Tyler Mitchell Humphreys, is a member of Manogue’s class of 2017!)

1981Anthony Gonzales and wife April welcomed their second grandchild, Adalyn Lee Anne Gomes on Oct. 2. She weighed 8 lbs, 4 oz and was 19 1⁄4 inches long.

Herb Santos was named President of the Nevada Justice Association. He’s shown here receiving the gavel from past president Cliff W. Marcek. The Nevada Justice Association is an organization of independent lawyers

who represent consumers and share the common goal of improving the civil justice system.

1985Pat Cashell has been named Regional Director for Volunteers of America (VOA). Cashell, who previously served as a VOA Volunteer, Advisory Board Member, and inspirational speaker at VOA’s Shelter from the Storm breakfast, took the helm on Oct. 1.  As the organization’s director, he will be responsible for leading 70 program staff in providing shelter, outreach, case management, affordable housing, and other supportive services for thousands of men, women, and children in our community.

“We are very excited to welcome Pat Cashell to the VOA team,” said Leo McFarland, president and CEO of Volunteers of America Northern California and Northern Nevada. “Pat brings true compassion and incredible energy to the important work being done by Volunteers of America to ensure that every person in our community has the opportunity to live a life of dignity and purpose.”

In addition to his work with VOA, Cashell also serves on the boards of Quest Counseling and Safe Talk for Teens.

1993 Longtime assistant baseball coach Dave Kulikowski has taken the head baseball coaching position at Galena High School. He thanks head coach Charles Oppio ‘86 for, “always telling the truth even when I didn’t want to hear it, pushing me to expect more from myself than I thought possible, and teaching me to be a leader by example.”

2001Jordan Davis was chosen as one of the Reno Gazette Journal’s “20 under 40” winners. The awards program, sponsored by RGJ Media and the Reno-Tahoe Young Professionals Network, honors 20 of the region’s outstanding young leaders, and if you read further you’ll see just why Jordan fit the bill.

Jordan is currently an attorney with Lionel Sawyer & Collins, where his practice focuses on complex civil litigation and commercial litigation. Prior to joining the firm, Jordan worked under current Nevada Governor and then Federal Judge Brian E. Sandoval in the United States District Court.

In 2014, Jordan became president of Big Brothers Big Sisters Young Professionals Committee. He volunteers his time providing legal aid to several community organizations in Northern Nevada,

including work with veterans of our armed forces, senior citizens, and youth. He was recently appointed to the Board of Directors for the Eddy House and is currently working on opening a drop-in-center for homeless youth. Jordan has also served as a guest lecturer at UNR and in high schools, where he speaks to students about law school and working for a large private firm.

This year Mountain States Super Lawyers named Jordan a “Rising Star” in the field of Business Litigation, chosen as one of the top 2.5 percent of young attorneys in his jurisdiction. Jordan was named to Nevada Business magazine’s “Legal Elite” in 2013 and 2014 as one of Northern Nevada’s top attorneys. And, in 2014, Jordan was recognized as “Big of the Year” by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada for his long time service.

Father Richard Kayizzi, a native of Uganda who was recently with the Diocese of Los Angeles, is the new chaplain of Bishop Manogue Catholic High School. Father Richard did his seminary training in both Uganda and at St. John’s seminary in Camarillo, Calif. He returned to Uganda to be ordained in his home diocese of Kampala, and then worked in a variety of positions—associate parish priest, assistant pastoral coordinator, vocations director and school chaplain—before attending Boston College where he earned a Master’s of Theology and Ministry with a concentration in pastoral care and counseling.

Father Richard says that he is happy to be returning to the role of chaplain. “Working as a school chaplain was a wonderful ministry for me

because I was able to share my life and faith in a school environment.”

Father Richard, who admits that as a boy he hoped to one day be a rapper, hasn’t found it difficult to connect with Manogue’s students. “They are ready to learn and have a lot of potential for growth. They are ready to help one another, create a loving relationship with each other and are open towards learning new things in class and outside of class.”

His job, he says, is to ensure that Manogue’s Catholic culture is present throughout the school’s activities, and that everyone—students, families, faculty and staff—feels welcome…and happy. “I want to bring God’s love and care to all people at this community, and make sure that the Catholic identity and values are emphasized. I plan to create a welcoming environment, and invite a full, conscious and active participation in all our liturgical celebrations.”

Tyler Cobb, Director of Campus Ministry at Bishop Manogue say Fr. Richard’s efforts are enhancing not only his department, but all school activities. “Fr. Richard adds a burst of enthusiasm to our campus. He has made himself available to the students in classrooms, the lunchroom, and on the sports fields. He has prayed with our teams, and presented lessons on the Mass to the theology classes. We are happy to have him as our chaplain.”

And while Father Richard is undoubtedly kept very busy by the 700-plus new family members he’s inherited at Bishop Manogue, he’s found some aspects of his life have become a little less complicated. “Nevada is a wonderful place to be. The people are welcoming and the traffic is not so intense like in Los Angeles. Every day is a happy day for me to look forward to and be grateful to the almighty God for his love and care for his people.”

Safety FirstManogue is very proud of the campus safety and security improvements added over the last several months.  These include interior and exterior cameras, a card-key entry system for employees, and a single-entry-point system for visitors

entering the building during the school day. We’re the only High School in northern Nevada with this system. In addition we are re-keying the building to improve

security for each classroom and work area, and partnering with Safe Schools to offer courses that provide individualized and specialized training for each employee.

Going GlobalThe International and Exchange Student programs at Bishop Manogue are growing! This school year, we welcome nineteen international students and five exchange students from Cayman Islands, China, Germany, Norway, Thailand, and Vietnam. These students have added to the diversity and globalized outlook of our school, and as they build rapport with host families and friendships with peers, they help bridge the differences between languages and cultures.

New to the program this year were a transition to a “push-in” class model to provide more direct in-class support; an International/Exchange Student orientation at the beginning of the year; and a distinct International/Exchange Student handbook to address the needs and expectations of the students, their host families, and their guardians.

A highlight of the year so far was the first-ever Student-Host Family Gathering, held at the Orachorn residence in October. It was a hit, and plans are in the works for a spring get-together.

Miner AcademyManogue has partnered with UNR, the Nevada Mining Association, and local mining industry professionals to develop the Miner Academy, a signature academy curriculum aimed at preparing students for college success in science related fields, and careers in geology, mining, engineering, mathematics, and information systems.

“Bishop Patrick Manogue once worked as a miner, our school mascot is a miner, and mining is an integral part of Nevada’s economy,” says principal Rick Harris. “Pardon the pun, but it’s really a match made in heaven for us to partner with the Mining Association to help our students carry on that mining legacy.”

The partnership will provide expanded opportunities in the

Sodality in Full Swing

This girls service group has a long and proud tradition of giving here at Bishop Manogue, and they were in high gear at holiday time! They kicked off the busy month of November by helping serve dinner at the Green and Gold fundraiser, then pulled off a successful school-wide Thanksgiving Food Drive, gathering a total of 4,943 food items. Sodality members then counted, collected, and transported that food to Sister Carmen Baca’s food bank at Our Lady of Snows Catholic Church and Holy Child Early Learning Center. Sister Carmen and Holy Child also each received $1,050 in $25 grocery gift cards to give to families in need—all monies raised during the Halloween dress-up day at school. In addition, Sodality presented Natchez Elementary School with $250 in grocery store gift cards to benefit families there.

Sister Carmen expressed her gratitude, “from the bottom of my heart and soul for your generosity to help those who are struggling. I thank you for the efforts of these precious Sodality girls, and for all of your students. May God bless you, each and every one.”

In conjunction with the American Red Cross and the Blue Star Mothers, Sodality also helped provide more than 1300 holiday greeting cards to the men and women of the 376th Expeditionary Logistics Readiness

Squadron stationed in Qatar through the Holiday Mail for Heroes Program. Students wrote messages on each, to show the troops that they are remembered and appreciated during the season.

Rocking SocktoberOur Leadership students collected 3200 pairs of socks, and on Veterans Day, distributed them to local charities and homeless shelters. Hooray for our amazing kids. And thanks to all you sock-donaters out there, too.

Dude, Lynn is Nice!On November 21 students at Bishop Manogue cooked up a surprise for the amazing lady that makes lunch happen, Lynn Marner of Roundabout Catering. The student body amassed to surprise her with signs, flowers, a choir serenade, and a fancy meal, not to mention a few news crews. The result: shock, awe, and tears…the happy kind, of course! They also arranged for Lynn to see a show and have dinner

at her favorite restaurant while she visited her mother in Tennessee over Thanksgiving, AND sent her off with an airline voucher so she can visit her again soon.

The students teamed with southern California startup DUDE. be nice, which inspires people to honor unsung heroes in the community in creative ways. The Manogue kids chose Lynn because she’s kind, friendly, talented, tolerant, and the type of person who knows everyone’s name.

Fall HighlightsFive of our teams came away with NIAA Academic State Championships: Cross Country, Girls Soccer, Boys Soccer, Volleyball and Football.

Senior Olivia Marazzo was chosen as the Nevada Player of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America

In Cross-Country, freshman Hannah Covington placed third at State, and junior Logan Spodobalski

placed sixth at State. They both were named to the All North and All State teams.

Christian Webber won the Regional Championship in Boys Tennis Singles.

Winter GamesUnder the leadership of new head coach Ralph Fields and assistant coach Andy Hughes, the Boys Basketball program is having a successful season, and establishing some new traditions. The teams are clad in new uniforms this year, thanks to the generosity of several donors, and the program also held a very successful “Seafood Palooza” fundraiser in November. The Varsity squad enjoyed a great start to their season, defeating Mountain View High School 58-52 at the Wild West Shootout. It was the team’s first win at that tournament in four years.

Girls Basketball Varsity Head Coach Craig Holt’s 2013-14 squad reached the State Championships last year, and, with nearly all of his team

returning, his plan is to be there again this year. The Varsity team is looking better than ever, with a whole new scheme, some key players returning from injury, and even more depth added to the roster. They opened the season with a resounding 89-60 win over Reed, historically one of their toughest competitors.

Early Intervention and Prevention Nonprofit Center for Teens in Washoe County

Safe Talk For Teens is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit Resource Center established to provide Early Intervention & Prevention services for teenagers with unmet needs in our community. Our mission is to assist, guide, redirect and motivate teenagers to make better decisions by focusing on their values and setting goals.

We target teens (ages 13-19) but will also provide services for children as young as 8, who quite often are trying to navigate through the challenges and difficulties of teenage life, who are exhibiting early warning signs such as truancy, declining grades, changes in behavior at home and school, use and/or abuse of alcohol and/or drugs, family issues, and relationship issues.

Our services include a free, safe, and confidential venue for teenagers and their families to meet with Joe Dufur, a retired Juvenile Probation Officer in Washoe County. We focus on decision making, utilizing a Values Clarification/Goal Setting Exercise. When necessary we act as a portal by referring to counselors and programs in the area. We also offer a Work Experience/Business Partnership Program which partners teenagers with local businesses for paid jobs, mentorship, and the teaching of business management skills.

In many of our teenagers, we see positive outcomes very quickly, in terms of their grades, attendance, social behaviors, and relationships with their parents. A number of them show improved ability to face conflict, solve problems, and identify their values as they make decisions daily. Our primary goal is to redirect these teens before they engage in more serious, harmful, and/or risky behaviors that may lead to criminal activity.
