Faithfulness and obedience to the Word of the Lord are not only logical consequences of faith but necessary fruits that grow in and from hearts redeemed and renewed by the gospel.

The Scripture readings for today emphasize with equal force that the basis for all faithfulness must be the Word of God and that all God-pleasing obedience must begin in the heart. May we always say with the psalmist, “Lord, how I love your law”!

Prayer before WorshipLord God, give me strength and willingness to

say with your Son, “Not my will but your will be done.”

Make me cheerful and trusting to bear whatever you let happen to me.

From your hand I am willing to take the good and the bad, the joy and the sorrow. Keep me from sin, gracious Father, and comfort me with your kind Word.

Let me never forgot how your Word “is sweeter than honey” and “a light for my path.” Amen.
