Crafty Carol and Co, doing it for charity.By our Roving Reporter, Anita Pell

Carol Hill (Villa 107) is a whiz at craft and sewing. Her love of sewing started when she was around 7 years old. She learned to sew early at school and continued these classes until the end of Year 12. During that time, she also taught Year 1s to sew and loved those classes. Although Carol says she is hopeless at drawing, Carol’s father and her grandmother were good at art so this is likely where her creative giftedness comes from.

Her dad never drove and the family would use public transport to get around. When Carol aspired to attend Bath University, she was put off by what seemed an endless travel time on the bus. She continued to sew during her time in England making lots of stuffed toys for various raffles.

When she came to Australia in 2002, Carol attended patchwork classes locally at what was then Blue Willow Cottage. This led to her joining patchwork/quilting groups in Werribee as a way of meeting new friends and increasing her skills and experience. Carol says she has made everyone back home in the UK a quilt over the years but, ”there are only so many quilts you can make!”. Carol knew the president of the local Craft Festival who encouraged her to put her hand to other items and have a stand, exhibiting her work. Carol

decided to give it a go and continues today to look for new things to re-invent.

When Carol and Ian moved into Palm Lake Resort, she was keen to get others interested in craft making. In 2014, she started the PLR Craft Group, taking over from a previous group.

This group has gone on to make:• Knitted and crochet poppies for the Canberra War Memorial,

• Baby beanies for premmy babies at the Mercy Hospital in Werribee,• Dog coats for the RSPCA, and • Penguin coats to go to Phillip Island.

WELCOME (TO THE WORLD!)

Palm Lake Group is so pleased to announce the arrival of Palm Lake Resort Truganina caretakers Jo and Troy’s first baby - a gorgeous little boy named Lando van Rees.

Lando was born on December 31, 2019 at 4.18pm, weighing 8lb 8oz and measuring 52.5cm in length. Troy tells us that Lando arrived just a couple of days late, with a full head of hair (complete with blonde highlights). Troy says it was his “soberest” Christmas Day on record as they eagerly, and anxiously, awaited the imminent arrival! Jo and the baby are both doing really well.

Lando is the third grandchild on Jo’s side and the ninth grandchild on Troy’s side. He’s also a very special great grandchild for Jo’s grandparents, Les and Rose.

Troy says the name “Lando” was a last-minute decision after he heard it in passing. The pair instantly fell in love with the unique name and it stuck.

You’ll see Troy back around the resort grounds now, after his return to work in late January. Jo’s taking six months off to care for Lando. We wish them all the best with their beautiful bundle!

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

March 1 This annual national event inspires and empowers communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment. What was started in 1989 by an “average Australian bloke” who had a simple idea to make a difference in his own backyard has now become the nation’s largest community-based environmental event.

March 1, 10am until 3pm, at Werribee Park Heritage Orchard, Werribee SouthDiscover the best of Werribee Park Heritage Orchard with tours of the orchard, tree sales from $15 to $25, grafting demonstrations and market stalls. You can also enjoy workshops, live music, food and craft stalls. It’s the perfect day out for any nature lover or green thumb.

HERITAGE FRUIT TREE FESTIVAL

Feb 22, from 10am until noon, from 41 Tower Road, WerribeeDiscover four stand-out homes and gardens while learning about edible gardening, water efficiency, solar, chooks, bees and more. The trail takes you through Werribee and Hoppers Crossing, and you are welcome to bring morning tea or nibbles to share at the fourth and final home.

WYNDHAM FOOD & GARDEN TRAIL

Once again, more than 228 residents came together and enjoyed themselves at the Palm Lake Resort Truganina Social Club’s “Not-so Silent Night” Christmas revue. Following a Christmas meal and drinks, the residents performed their acts, as these photos show. The ‘Naughty Nuns’ are ladies of the Social Club. Our tai chi group, along with many other groups, showed what their hard work throughout the year produces. The night closed with our resort’s answer to The Full Monty. This was a hit, but there were no photos (as they were censored!). Only kidding! Who would have thought keeping your clothes on would create such a buzz?!

FESTIVE SEASON WAS JUST THAT!

Following this event, New Year’s Eve saw another 180 guests see in 2020 together. They danced, sang and had a wonderful night. Our resort’s community members really do know how to enjoy themselves!

Page 3: Truganina. - Home | Palm Lake Resort...The benefits of setting goals in retirement are manifold: it can bring a sense of purpose or connection, prevent regression into despondency,

A GOAL WITHOUT A PLAN IS SIMPLY A LIST. HERE’S WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO CONTINUE SETTING GOALS, WHATEVER YOUR AGE. AND AT THIS TIME OF THE (NEW) YEAR, GOAL SETTING CAN BE EVEN MORE REWARDING...

Got goals? Get some!

Having something to look forward to can trigger a surge of dopamine (your reward hormone) and serotonin (the hormone that helps with sleep and relieves pain and bad moods). Many of us use food or alcohol to trigger these hormones but when we feel them in response to setting, projecting and reaching new goals, we feel successful, capable, confident and relaxed.

“When you are goal-oriented, you develop a more resilient emotional version of yourself,” says naturopath, author and speaker Nicky Wise. “But as we move into a slower, less demanding phase of our lives, not having a time-orientated deadline to work to can feel foreign and, for some, downright disorienting.”

The benefits of setting goals in retirement are manifold: it can bring a sense of purpose or connection, prevent regression into despondency, depression and disconnection and keep things interesting and engaging.

“Matching your goals to suit your stage of retirement is important,” Nicky says. “If you are just entering your retirement and still in the working rhythm, you may need to set goals that will keep you busy with moderate time expectations. Alternatively, if you are older, your goals may focus on improving your personal health and wellbeing. Science tells us that our life satisfaction increases when you have a purpose. Setting and achieving your goals will help you find that purpose.”

HERE ARE NICKY’S TOP 5 TIPS ON HOW TO SET GOALS:

1. Set SMART goals – ‘Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely’.2. Write out your goals and display them where you can see them.3. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t achieve your goal on the first try, or your first attempt doesn’t go to plan – you have time to reset and review, which is vital to goal setting success.4. Set a goal that involves learning something new or attempting something you’ve never tried before.5. Write a free form list of all the things you’ve always wanted to do, try, visit, experience, see, listen to, know about and explore – not a bucket list, but rather a ‘lazy Susan’ of what you can still do for the fun and pleasure of it. Use this as a master list to draw your specific goals from.

Now, Carol and friends are doing loads in support of bushfire relief. Carol and the Wyndhan Patchworkers’ Group have recently made more than 100 neck ties for the fireys. A number of Palm Lake Resort residents are also currently assisting with making bat wraps, koala mittens and kangaroo pouches for injured and displaced wildlife.

Currently on a Wednesday afternoon and Thursday evening, interested residents from our resort meet in the craft room to share their skills and experiences, while making lots of interesting items and some new friends along the way. During 2019, the first workshops for interested residents took place. As an example, eight residents enjoyed making leather brooches and it is hoped there will be more workshops during 2020.

Craft is clearly a wonderful way for residents to make new friends while honing their interests and skills.

“It would be great to get interested residents together to make more pieces for the bushfire-affected animals who require pouches and also I’d like us to make breast cancer drainage bags for patients,” Carol says. “All that is needed are people who can iron, sew a line and cut out squares.”

So, keep your eye out for a poster in the next little while advertising a day when crafters can gather to make these essential items for charity. All will be welcome to take part.

Turn up the heat.IT’S BEEN A POPULAR FINNISH PASTIME FOR CENTURIES, BUT RECENT STUDIES HAVE REVEALED THAT SPENDING TIME IN A SAUNA DOESN’T JUST FEEL GOOD – IT COULD ALSO BE INCREDIBLY GOOD FOR YOU.

A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings has reported that regular sauna bathing can bring about physical benefits similar to those associated with moderate exercise. While this isn’t to say that sauna bathing should completely replace exercise – a combined approach has yielded the best results – there is plenty of evidence to suggest that hitting the sauna a few times a week can offer numerous physical benefits.

While there is no active functioning of the skeletal muscles during sauna bathing, the heat and increase in heartrate – typically from baseline up to 120 to 150 BPM – is said to increase muscle blood flow, aiding in joint health and blood pressure.Sauna bathing has been found to benefit cardiovascular function, with two reports investigating the effects of regular sauna bathing on the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease. One found an increase in sauna bathing habits to be associated with reduced risk of sudden cardiac death, while the other found that sauna bathing

four to seven times a week reduced the risk of stroke by 62 per cent in comparison to sauna bathing just once a week. These recent findings indicate that high corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) levels – which can typically be improved with regular physical activity – and frequent sauna sessions can substantially reduce the risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Sauna bathing has also been linked to an improvement in pain and symptoms associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders, and can improve headache disorders.

So, there you have it – frequent visits to your resort sauna could do your physical health a world of good. Keep in mind, however, that high temperatures in saunas could be potentially harmful for those with symptomatic and unstable disease conditions, or when combined with alcohol consumption. It’s important to consult with your doctor before adding more sauna visits into your weekly routine.
