This second part in our multi-part

article series on Evidences for a Young

Universe, will examine the evidences

found in the earth’s geological realm. On

their own, these evidences do not

conclusively prove that the universe is

“young,” however, they do verify the

recent creation of the earth, and therefore

serve as

collaborating

evidence for the

young age of the

universe.1

Evolution-

ary scientists use

different methods

to calculate the

age of the earth

and the universe.

These include

examining, and measuring geological

features, composition of rocks and rock

layers, and geological processes.

Evolutionists claim that long periods of

time generally are required for geologic

processes to take place. However, the

Bible declares that the earth is young, and

hints2 at the cause of most of the

geological features we see. Also, many

different observable geological formations

or processes make the evolutionists’

assumptions seem questionable.

Rapid Layering and Erosion

Evolutionists assert that it took the Color-

ado River around 17 million years to etch

out the Grand Canyon.3 However, even

within the past century, several geological

phenomena have occurred which

demonstrated that it does not take a long

time to move a lot of earth. In

Washington State, in the early 1900s, a

small canyon was carved by a creek in a

matter of only

a few days.4

The Burling-

ame Canyon,

as it came to

be called,

ended up

being around a

¼ mile long,

and over 100

feet deep, and

around 100

feet wide.

Another large scale instance of

canyon like formations being created in

short order are the Channeled Scablands

of Eastern Washington State. These were

carved by “cataclysmic flooding” coming

from the breaking of the natural dam

which had formed the glacial Lake

Missoula that existed during the Ice Age.5

Even secular geologists are

coming to realize that the flooding

from Lake Missoula carved the

scablands fairly quickly.6 This is a

step in the right direction towards the

biblically correct worldview!

The secular view of rock

layering says that it takes millions of

years to form thick rock layers. One

way they figure this is based upon the

fossils found in each layer. The fossils

are supposed to be a certain age based

upon the supposed progression of

biological evolution. Therefore, it is

logically assumed that the layers

containing those fossils are around the

age of those fossils. Even though the

fossils and layers probably are very

close in age, the commonly declared

amount of time involved in the

deposition of those layers is

questionable. In fact, when Mt. Saint

Helens blew her top in 1980, layers of

rock hundreds of feet thick were

formed in only a few day and weeks.7

There was one particular section of the

layering around twenty-five feet thick

that was deposited in just a few hours.

While it is true that not all rock is

formed by volcanic activity, the Mt. St.

Helens volcanic eruptions demonstrate

that it doesn’t take millions of years to

form certain kinds of rock.8

Folded Rock Layers

Another evidence of rapid

deposition of rock layers is the fact

that thick layers of rock have been

found which are contorted in ways that

could only have been accomplished

while the layers were wet and soft.

This author has personally seen rock

layers that were easily a couple of

dozen feet thick that were bent at 90

degree angles while maintaining a

cohesive shape. How could rock

layers that were laid down very slowly,

over millions of years maintain enough

pliability to be bent in such drastic

ways without the rocks cracking? If the

Flood of Noah’s day were as swift and

catastrophic as the Bible indicates, and if

it’s after effects were as impacting and

widespread as creation geologists believe,

then fast deposition of rock layers, and

rapid tectonic plate shifting and molding

could have accomplished this spectacular

feat while the layers were still relatively

soft and pliable.

Ocean floor sediments

Most of evolutionary based

geology is built upon the premise that “the

present is the key to the past,” or

“uniformitarianism.” Uniformitarianism

is the idea that the past rates of geological

processes were very similar to the current

rates of geological processes. So, from a

uniformitarian perspective, if we see a

canyon with a river flowing through it

today, and the river is slowly eroding the

canyon, we would assume that it took

millions of years to form the canyon.

However, we may not know that the

canyon was actually formed by massive

amounts of water rushing through the area

after a natural dam broke. Interestingly

enough, we can actually disprove the

millions and billions of years paradigm by

using uniformitarian assumptions. One

case in point is the sediment that has

collected on the floors of the earth’s

oceans. Evolutionary geologists estimate

that the earth is around 3.5 – 4 billion

years old.9 The oceans are supposed to be

in the range of 60 – 400 million years old.

However, if we take the supposed age of

the oceans, and use the current rates of

movement of sediment from the land

masses into the oceans, the ocean itself

should be clogged with sediment by

now.10

Because the ocean is not clogged

with sediment, we can surmise that either

the oceans are not as old as supposedly

are, or else the rates of sedimentation

deposition have been different in the past

(which contradicts the evolutionary

uniformitarian paradigm).

Earth’s Magnetic Field

The field of magnetic energy that

surrounds the earth acts not only as a

protective blanket to keep the sun’s

energy from destroying the earth, but it

also serves as a way of limiting the age of

the earth. As time passes, the energy of

the magnetic field decreases.

Evolutionary scientists claim that over the

past hundreds of thousands of years, the

earth has gone through numerous polarity

reversals (thus changing the strength of

the magnetic field), due to oscillations of

the earth’s molten core which consists of

minerals like nickel and iron that affect

magnetic polarity.11

However, creation

scientists argue that the cataclysmic

geological upheaval experienced during

the Flood of Noah’s day explains the

reversals of the earth’s magnetic field

polarity, and the decay in the strength of

the magnetism. This decay of the

magnetic field can be used to determine

an “upper limit” of age of the magnetic

field. Scientists, using scientific and

archeological observations, have

estimated that the magnetic field of the

earth has decayed to the point where,

using “uniformitarian” assumptions, it

cannot be any older than around 20,000

years.12

Conclusion

These are just a few of the

evidences from the geological realm that

would point to a young age for the earth,

which in turn would add to the evidence

for a young universe. There are many

other evidences from the earth’s

geological record that indicate a young

earth. Among these are the rapid growth

of coral reefs, Carbon-14 in fossils,

diamonds, and coal, and radio-halos in

rock crystals. In our next issue, we will

be examining evidences for a young

universe found in the studies of biology

and anthropology. Until then, why not

“What about the Gap Theory?”

The Gap Theory, an idea

spawned in the early 1800s by

Thomas Chalmers, is still a fairly

common objection to the notion of

a recent creation of the universe.

Chalmers, a Scottish minister and

professor of theology, sought to

reconcile the teachings of Genesis

with the claims of his

contemporaries in the fields of

natural sciences who taught that

the earth was millions of years

old. Chalmers proposed that

while the days in Genesis chapter

1 were literal – 24 hour days, the

first and second day were

separated by a span of some

millions of years. It was here, in

the “gap” between day one and

day two of the creation week that

the millions of years of earth’s

geological history fit in to the

picture. His theory was also

known as the “ruin-reconstruction”

theory because he argued that the

creation of the universe came in

two distinct stages. The first

contained all the plants, and living

creatures (including supposed

soulless pre-humans) that we see

now as fossils, and the second

phase brought about life forms in

their present form. At some point

in time after the first stage of

creation a “flood” was brought

upon the earth as a judgment

against Lucifer’s rebellion against

God.13

This judgment on the earth

formed the fossils and geological

features we find today. After

“Lucifer’s flood,” God remade the

“void and formless” earth, and

filled it once again with vegetation

and living creatures. Chalmer’s

Gap Theory came to be widely

accepted in Christian circles, and

was even held to by some very famous

theologians of the 20th

century. In

spite of its widespread acceptance, the

Gap Theory has some serious flaws,

not only scripturally speaking, but

also through the lens of logic and

good geology.

To begin with, the Gap Theory

pigeon-holes millions of years of earth

history in this “blank” space between

the lines of Genesis 1:1 and 1:2. The

problem is that this geological history

contains layer upon layer of fossil

laden rocks. These fossils are a

testament to billions of dead things

that were buried forever in the rock.

This means that there must have been

death prior to the Fall of Adam and

Eve in the Garden. Theologically, this

is problematic, for now we have

physical death prior to the entrance of

sin into the world – and this directly

contradicts several Scriptural

references to the origin of death.14

Further, if there were millions of years

of death, bloodshed, and violence

prior to the final Creation when God

pronounced His completed creation

very good,15

wouldn’t that make Him

out to be a cruel and sadistic?

Logically speaking, the Gap

Theory has gaps because its claim of a

destruction of the pre-creation week

earth is self-defeating. If the

destruction of the first creation phase

resulted in the formation of the rock

layers and fossils, then wouldn’t the

second creation as well as the Flood

of Noah’s day have destroyed those

geologic remains? In other words, the

Gap Theory explains away the very

thing it is trying to accommodate –

the supposed millions of years of

geological history. Further, the

Scriptures tell us that God made

everything in six days. If there was a

first phase of creation, then a

destruction, then another creation,

wouldn’t that be contradictory to

what Exodus 20:11 says? Revelation

21:1 directly confirms this when it

says that John saw a “new heaven

and a new earth, because the first

heaven and first earth had passed

away…” If the Gap Theory were

correct, wouldn’t it mean that the

earth we are on now is actually the

“second earth,” and that Revelation

was incorrect in stating that the

present earth is the “first earth?”

Space will not permit me to expound

in greater detail on the problems with

this attempt to harmonize

evolutionary geology and the Bible,

but suffice it to say that the Gap

Theory has many gaps in it, and

should be discarded as unscriptural

and unscientific. Meanwhile, let us

remember that God’s Word is true and

unchanging, even when man’s

knowledge is constantly in a state of

flux and molding.

The Origins Debate in the News

Like a gossip tabloid at the checkout line, science websites and

magazines are constantly feeding us startling and catchy lines about the latest

in scientific discoveries. When it comes to origins related news, the

information these “scientific” news sources share is about as reliable and

useful as the latest tale of drama in the life of a famous pop-star or actor. This

time around, one science news website is claiming that the oldest (“earliest”)

dinosaur yet to be found was recently discovered.1617

The author of the article

tells us that this newly discovered dinosaur, “Nyasasaurus parringtoni,”

pushes back the appearance of the dinosaurs by at least 10 – 15 million years

from the late-Triassic to the mid-Triassic period.18

In reading about this

discovery that was announced in early December, I find several interesting

tidbits to comment on in this column. For starters, it is freely admitted that this

discovery is based upon the findings of only a handful – seven to be exact –

fossilized bones.19

And yet, these scientists (and their artist cohorts) have

already come up with theories and depictions of what the dinosaur might have

looked like, and what sort of creature it was. This too reminds me of one of

those cheesy gossip rags you’d see while waiting in line at the grocery store –

making up facts based upon scanty evidence. Another aspect I find fascinating

is the claim that this discovery pushes back the supposed age of the dinosaurs

by a substantial amount of time. With the evolutionary timescale changing all

the time, it makes one wonder how reliable our scientific information is. Why

do people still believe in evolution when the scientists are constantly changing

their “facts” of how and when evolution occurred? And, as is so typical of

these sorts of things, the age of the dinosaur was determined by the age of the

rock layers in which it was found, which in turn are dated by the types of

fossils contained therein – a sort of circular reasoning – something that critics

of the Bible accuse Christians of frequently.20

Lastly, the scientists’

description of the size of the dinosaur caught my attention. Supposedly, this

dinosaur was about the size of a large dog. This is interesting because

researchers who have studied the size and carrying capacity of Noah’s Ark

have found that the average size of a dinosaur was about the size of a sheep.21

Why is this important? It helps the Bible apologist to solve the skeptical

question that asks how Noah could have fit all of the animals in the Ark. Since

most dinosaurs were relatively small, and since they were still alive at the time

of Noah, they most definitely were passenger candidates for Noah’s Ark.22

From popular depictions of dinosaur super stars like T-Rex, Apatosaurus, and

Triceratops, we get the idea that dinosaurs were these massive creatures, when

in fact many of them were fairly small in size. This helps us to understand that

the Bible is true when it tells us that the Ark had room for two of every kind of

animal.

While the discoveries, and opinions of man are constantly changing,

God is unchanging and His Word reflects His truthful and unwavering

character.23

Instead of blindly swallowing the proclamations of man, and

doubting God’s Word, we should be trusting in the Word of the infinite,

infallible God, and be skeptical of the assertions of those who are finite and

fallible.

Thousands Not Billions: Challenging

an Icon of Evolution, Questioning the

Age of the Earth, by Dr. Don DeYoung.

This book – geared towards the

layperson – focuses on reporting the results

of a multi-year research study on the

relationship between radioisotope dating

methods, the age of the earth, and the

Genesis account of the origins of the

universe. The Radioisotopes and the Age of

Forty years ago this month, the United

States Supreme Court found somewhere hidden between the lines of our Nation's

Constitution the right of a woman to end the life of her unborn baby. It has been estimated that since that time, at the very least 50

million innocent and helpless baby humans have been slaughtered before they ever

breathed their first breath or saw the light of day. Just in the year 2007, over 1 million, 200 thousand abortions were performed in

the United States. Doing some simple math, we can find that on average, an unborn baby human is murdered in

America's own holocaust approximately every 2 and a half minutes. It is a sad fact that there exists in America today an entire dedicated

industry that generates billions of dollars of revenue at the gruesome expense of our nation's youngest and most

vulnerable citizens. The legacy of abortion advocates like Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, is a legacy of death.

The concept of abortion is much older than just

the Roe v. Wade court decision. In fact, the practice of

abortion has been around for many centuries throughout the world. The Bible actually tells us that during the

time of Moses the people of Canaan sacrificed their children in the fires of their false god Molech.

the Israelites turned from worshiping their Creator, and began to practice this pagan and demonic ritual during the latter part of the

period of Kings before the Babylonian exile.2 Today, non-

Christians, and Christians alike are sacrificing their children on the altar to the gods of convenience and “choice” through the means

of abortion. God fulfilled His promised judgment on Israel for their disobedience in murdering their children as an offering to

their idols. One has to wonder how long it will be before God judges America for killing her children as an act of worship of selfishness and convenience.

As is often the case with sinful actions, those who favor and promote abortion believe lies. Namely they believe that it is

acceptable to solve personal problems through ungodly means. Further, many believe that the living, unborn baby is not

human, but rather just a “blob of tissue” at

certain stages of its “evolutionary” development and growth, of course the

Bible and good science both tell us otherwise. These people also believe that somehow a person has the right to

do to an unborn child what would be legally classified as murder if it were

done to any person outside the womb.

The Bible tells us that Satan is the one who comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but Christ came to give His

life so that He could give us eternal life.

3 Proverbs 8:37 says that all those

who hate God love death. As Christians, we should love and protect the lives of

the innocent, just as Proverbs 24:11 and 12 implies. We should be

reaching out in compassion and love to those who are suffering the emotional and spiritual pain involved in the aftermath of an abortion. We should also be promoting the truth to those around

us that God in His love, gave His Son to pay the penalty for our sins, and offer forgiveness and new life even to those who have

made the choice to abort their unborn children.

Today, and every day, let us celebrate the sacred gift of life,

and pray and work to help protect the sanctity of human life from pre-born to elderly, from conception to natural death. In doing this, we will honor our Creator who made every human being in

His marvelous image.

Sweat, Air Conditioning and the Fall

Our world is graced

with trees of all shapes and

sizes. These intriguing plants

vary greatly from the tall and

magnificent redwood trees in

the forests of California, to the

scrawny and bland hackberry

tree in the Texas plains, with

many thousands of varieties in

between. But with the variety of

trees come a variety of

problems, or so it would seem.

Understanding a minimum background in physics, I took it

upon myself to understand what it is that makes trees

unique in their ability to transport nutrients and water to

the leaves of the trees. In this investigation, I discovered

many things which I trust my readers shall find intriguing.

God has designed into trees a system of capillaries

and tubes (called xylem). By this system, nutrients and

water are transferred from the soil to the tops of trees and

to its leaves. However, problems arise from the Law of

Gravity that prevents water from traveling up a tube

farther than 10 meters (33 feet, approximately).

So just how does all this water get to the tops of

these enormous trees?

Pardon me as I digress.

Imagine that water tower in your town, or the

several in your surrounding area. What is the purpose of

these devices of human engineering? Simple: Water

pressure. The water that comes out of the faucet in your

home doesn’t just come from the walls of your home, but

rather arrives at your abode via a rather complex series of

pipes, pumps, and reservoirs.

You see, this water starts at the main source, such as

a lake, river, or well. The water needed for a community is

then pumped to a processing facility where it is purified,

and chemicals such as fluoride and chlorine are added to

help prevent algal build up in the system. Once purified,

the water is pumped from the processing plant along pipes

to a lift station, which is simply a pump at the base of a

water tower that lifts water into the tank at the top of the

water tower. The large capacities of these water towers,

which can be as much as 80,000 (US) gallons, serve to add

pressure to the water system. As the water in the pipes

travels farther away from the pumps, the pressure in the

pipes decreases. (article continued on page 7)

Johannes Kepler

Johannes Kepler was a German

mathematician, astronomer, author and

observer of God’s work in this world. He was

before his time in many areas of research and

study. His books are still readily available (I

found them on the popular website Amazon)

and show us the mind of a man who was

seeking to glorify God through his work. As

he said: “I had the intention of becoming a

theologian but now I see how God is, by my

endeavours, also glorified in astronomy, for the heavens declare the

glory of God.”1

Born in late December 1571, Johannes was educated at

Tüebingen University, where he undertook the studies of Theology,

Philosophy, Mathematics and Astronomy.2 His brilliant mind and

tenacity led him to gain a professorship at the University of Graz

(Austria), where he taught Astronomy and undertook astrological

predictions and gained a respect, when some came true. His

conjectures regarding planetary orbit, and the concentric nature of the

solar system, proved to be faulty. However, “Kepler's approach is

quite appealing in the context of modern physics---the hydrogen atom

has a single electron in orbit around a proton, like a one-planet solar

system, and quantum mechanics only allows the electron to describe

certain orbits, which are geometrically determined.”3

Kepler’s book Mysterium Cosmographicum (The Mystery of

the Universe) explained his position concerning the planets, their

distances from the sun, and planetary motion in space.4 He sent a

copy to the most well-known astronomer of this time, Tycho Brahe,

who had a large observatory off the coast of Denmark, on the island

of Hveen.5 Frustratingly, Brahe would not share any of his complied

data with fellow astronomical observers, until his model of the

universe was refined to his liking and specificity.6 However, Kepler

had impressed him with his knowledge of the universe, and thusly

offered Johannes a position as his mathematical assistant. Kepler

joined him, as the mathematician for Emperor Rudolf II, in Prague.

Most of his research at this time was directed at observations of the

planet Mars, which were an assignment from Brahe; this he undertook

for eight years.7 (article continued on page 7)

There are two ways to counteract this pressure loss (and

who wants to take a shower under a trickle of water,

right?). They are to decrease the inside diameter of the

pipes by which the water is being carried to its destination,

or to increase the water pressure by an added pump or

some sort of pressure building device, such as a water

tower. When water has been pumped up to the tank at the

top of the water tower, the added height of the water

tower, usually 75 to 150 feet, creates a larger amount of

pressure in the water supply farther down line due to the

law of nature that demands that water always seek the

lowest possible plain because of gravity. The amount of

pressure added by a water tower decreases the need for

further pumps along the water line.

Now how does this system of pumps, pipes, and

water towers relate to trees and their ability to carry water

to their highest boughs? Well, to be honest, it took me a

good while to figure out how I would draw a connection

between these marvelous things. After many long hours of

pondering, I was struck with how important water is to our

world, and our very survival! Civilizations have been

marked throughout the ages by their various methods of

transporting water to their population. The same it is with

trees. Without water in their uppermost parts, trees would

simply cease to exist.

So

just how

do trees

transport

water and

nutrients

to their

leaves?

Through

an

amazing

system

designed

by our Amazing and Wise Creator, within the network of

xylem tubes of very tall trees exists an astounding negative

fifteen atmospheres (-15 atmospheres) of pressure that

serve as a vacuum system to pull the water and nutrients

up to the leaves. What causes this vacuum to be created

and sustained? Because trees grow from the roots up, they

always have their roots in the ground, and thus there never

exist any air bubbles or any sort of hindrance to prevent

this vacuum from working. As the tree grows, its leaves

participate in a process called “transpiration” where water

molecules are evaporated from the plant’s cell wall, and

evaporated into the air. This process of evaporation creates

a negative pressure on the inside of the plant! But get this;

the tree only uses up to 5% of the water it actually pulls up

into itself for growth: the other 95% simply evaporates.1

That’s right! Most of that water is simply there to sustain

the vacuum system from which the tree derives its

nutrients.

In 1601 Tycho Brahe died, leaving Kepler as imperial

mathematician, with a treasury of information from Brahe’s own

studies of the universe now available for his uses.8 It was in 1604 that

a new star appeared – the “Nova of 1604,” and while he wrestled with

the mathematics of the oval and ellipse in relation to planets orbits, he

struggled with personal problems at home.9 It was around this time

that he discovered his first law of planetary motion (“The path of the

planets about the sun is elliptical in shape, with the center of the sun

being located at one focus.”), and shortly thereafter, his second (“An

imaginary line drawn from the center of the sun to the center of the

planet will sweep out equal areas in equal intervals of time.”).10

The

culmination of this work was the publication of Astronomia nova

(The New Astronomy), explaining his new laws.11

1611 was a tumultuous year for Johannes. Emperor Rudolf II

abdicated his throne, throwing his kingdom into upheaval and unrest,

causing Kepler to move to Upper Austria, near the mighty Danube.12

It was during this period that Johannes looked into numerical

harmony, the melodies produced by the elliptical movement of planets

in their orbits. His third law states: The ratio of the squares of the

periods of any two planets is equal to the ratio of the cubes of their

average distances from the sun.13

He published a book about these

discoveries and called it Harmonices Mundi.14

Kepler’s work on planetary motion was expanded upon when

Isaac Newton “discovered” gravity, so we see the extraordinary

legacy which Kepler left behind, for others to test and prove and build

upon.15

I will leave you with one of my favorite quotes, said so

eloquently by this amazing man of science and faith.

Great is God our Lord. Great is His power and there is no end to his

wisdom.24

would seem to otherwise make this everyday miracle in nature

Though this may not be the best example of man “copying his

creator” this does serve to show that there are designs in engineering

that man has used that are reminiscent to God’s creation. And God’s

creation is always much more efficient at the task and superior to

man’s invention.

- Epicurus, an ancient Greek philosopher, hedonist and best known for Epicureanism.

Compiler’s Note: Epicurus touches on the age-old question

of why a loving God would allow evil. I

thought he gave an interesting

perspective, albeit an unbiblical one. But

he does ask some provocative questions,

which can be answered by reading the

first few chapters of Genesis. God created

a perfect world, but Adam and Eve

decided to disobey God’s command, and

in doing so, they brought death, suffering

and evil into the now im-perfect world.

God is still God, and He is a good God.

His goodness was shown when He sent

forth His only begotten Son, to pay the

price of sin, the sin that we committed.

This Christmas season, we can rejoice in

the goodness of God, and also “be ready

always to give an answer to every man

that asks [us] a reason of the hope that is

in [us] with meekness and fear.”2
