Charity Quilting News Hello Ladies,

Betty and I (Vergie) made our delivery to GNC last week. They were so pleased with the quilts and supplies you gathered for them.

We were able to re-supply our fabric stash with fabric that we purchased from the Tea Time Calico store before it closed. We will miss that store.

We also received fabric from Coffee Creek. We are so happy to get the flannels for our kid’s quilts.

Thanks to Heidi at GNC for sending the photo of the kids with their new quilts. They are in need of sheets, double and single, towels and all cleaning supplies.

Liz, Betty, and Vergie

Good Neighbor Center The Good Neighbor Center (GNC), located in Tigard is dedicated to providing safe emergency housing and supportive, empowering services for families. To learn more about them, go to Good Neighbor Center.

GNC Donation Item Every month our members bring to our General Meeting non-quilting related items to be donated to the GNC. The folks there always welcome donations of bedding, towels, cleaning supplies, laundry products or personal grooming supplies, canned or dry goods, food products (such as spaghetti, pasta, rice, flour, or sugar), toilet paper, food storage bags, large black garbage bags, disinfectant wipes, disinfectant spray or similar household cleaning products. If you have any of these items on hand, even if it is not the “Donation Item of the Month”, bring it in, it will be welcomed.

Charity Quilter’s Sew Day The TVQG Charity Quilters meet monthly on the first Monday of the month at the Sherwood Senior Center. Sewing start time is 10:00 a.m. All TVQG members are invited to attend. Please bring your own sewing machine and basic sewing supplies. A wide selection of fabric is available for you to use in putting together a charity quilt. Finished quilts are donated to Tigard’s Good Neighbor Center, WINGS, or to other charity organizations as needed. The Good Neighbor Center kids proudly show off their new quilts.

Holiday Bazaar Additional Information Event Date and Volunteer Information

This year the Winter Bazaar event hours are 9:00am through 4:00pm both Friday and Saturday. We’ll also meet to set up tables on Thursday evening, November 10th for an hour or so. Also needed is help with clean up and take down at the end of the sale. All assistance is welcomed.

A sign-up list to work the booth was passed around at the September meeting, but some time slots are still available. Please reach out to Cindy Calderwood by email at [email protected]. If you would like to help work at the sales tables or need additional information on the Winter Bazaar.

Sale Item Suggestions

Quilts large or small, quilted items such as table runners, placemats, mug rugs and pot holders are always a popular sale item. Handcrafted items such as aprons, tote bags, bookmarks

and pin cushions also seem to sell well. It’s always nice to also have an assortment of smaller, less costly items available for sale. By the way, the unsold items from this summer’s Farmers Market will be offered for sale.

How to get items to us:

The October General Meeting, on October 18th, will be the last meeting before the Winter Bazaar to bring in your sale items. But if you find yourself not meeting this deadline, items may be dropped off at the sale location as late as the morning of November 11th.

Labeling Items With the volume of donated items we

expect to receive for this event, TVQG

is asking to please take a moment to

add a price tag to your donated items.

You may use a price tag method of

your choice. But, for convenience,

Included in the Forms and Information

Section of this newsletter (See Page 26

and 27) are sheets of personalized

TVQG labels. These printable pages of

the TVQG-customized labels should

print from your own home printer.

Contact Carol Springer at

[email protected], should you

need to print these labels in a different

digital format.

One last suggestion regarding price

tags, using a safety pin to secure price

tag to the item works best. Pinned

price tags don’t leave a sticky residue,

and are less likely to fall off the item.

Sales Revenue

Increased revenue means that as your

guild, we’ll be in a better

position to fund quality

speakers, support various

charity groups and

organizations, sponsor events like our

Sit and Sew days, and continue to

purchase valuable door and event

prizes for our members, and maintain

operating costs within budget. .

TVQG Greeters At each TVQG General Meeting, we have a greeter to help with member check-in, support new members, assist guests to orientate themselves, help with displaying Block of the Month submissions and assist quilters during Show and Tell. TVQG’s Greeter for October is Bonnie Holt, November is Cindy Calderwood. If you signed up to be a greeter, but find you are unable to make it to that meeting, please let any Board Member know so a replacement can be contacted.

Treasury Update

Co-Treasurer, Judy Orlandini provided a brief budget overview at the October 4th Board meeting. Details included a balance of $4662.57 as of Sept. 29th, with a negative of ($737.07) as compared to budget.

If any of our members have any questions regarding TVQG’s budget or financial status please contact Treasurer, Julie Gillaspy at [email protected]

Tips and Tricks

To hold down your binding as it is being stitched either by hand or machine, try using plastic-coated paper clips as an alternative to using those popular, but somewhat pricey wonder clips.

National Quilters Circle has published a 5-minute long free video on Quilting Seam Allowances. To watch it, select this link: Quilting Seam Allowances

Of Interest to Quilters

Oregon Quilt Project

Hello from The Oregon Quilt Project - we have been busy submitting some of Oregon's documented quilts to the Quilt Index. If you are looking for a pattern or quilt inspiration or a quilt from The Oregon Quilt Project go to http://www.quiltindex.org/and search through this wonderful data base.

Are you interested in having your quilt documented? Reserve your spot at the next documentation to be held on October 29th in Salem. Or would you like a program on training volunteers for quilt documentation of your own? More information can be found at http://www.oregonquiltproject.org/

Information for the Oregon Quilt Project was provided to TVQG by Lori Friedman, Marketing for The Oregon Quilt Project

Quilting Hub Oh my goodness, when I went to the website Quilting Hub (QuiltingHub.com). I was overwhelmed by the fabulous resources this site has available for quilters. I could have spent hours browsing the wealth of information they offer for quilters both locally and worldwide. Some of the things they offer are a trip planner, a worldwide quilts shop directory, quilting services, quilting events, local quilt guild information, shop hops, and links to multiple quilting blogs. Better yet, there is no fee to browse their site, although you may be prompted to create an account. The only information they asked for when creating a login account was my name and an email address. I found their trip planner to be fun and informative (and even planned a couple of trips – even if it was an only in my dreams). Here is what they have to say about their Trip Planner feature: “Quilters love finding quilting fabric stores!

The Trip Planner™ is the most popular way for quilters to see maps and travel routes of your favorite quilting resources worldwide. Add our unparalleled accuracy of our quilt shop directory, and this becomes the best way to find quilt shops near you, or any other quilting resources worldwide.”

Frixion pens

At a retreat earlier this year, I won a door prize that contained all kind of fun quilting-related supplies

that I probably would not have purchased for myself. Included in the bag was a Frixion Pen. I’ll have

to admit I was totally in the dark about its capabilities. So I did a little research (as in I “Googled it”.)

Here is what I found. These pens come in multiple colors and fade away after time or when pressed by

a warm iron…sweet. I found out these pens were originally designed for paper, not fabric. But you

know quilters – they’re an innovative group, so quickly these pens became a go-to product among quilt

makers. The only negative thing that I could find about them during my Google fact-finding mission

was that if the fabric freezes the markings will return. OK, yeah that could be a bad thing….but really

who among us puts our quilts in the freezer? So now with that research done, I think I will go happily

on my way, mark my quilt with my newly acquired Frixion Pen, iron it away, and make a solemn

promise to not store my quilts in the freezer.
