TVQG Activities Update Wow, we sure are
having some crazy weather here in the Portland area. We’ve seen it all
from snow, ice, freezing rain, and
heavy winds to flood warnings. I sure hope all of you stayed warm and safe during this nasty weather. As you all know a wise decision was made to cancel our January meeting. So here’s what we decided to do as far as current activities such as the Row by Row Challenge and the UFO Contest. We’ll simply pick up at the February meeting exactly where we would have started in January. In other words, everything is just shifted down by a month. The same goes for our Block of the Month presenters and the Fat Quarter themes.
We’ve updated the Block of the Month and Fat Quarter schedules, which can be seen later in this newsletter.
If you were the Block of the Month Presenter for January, well….now you will be our February presenter.
Hope this makes sense to everyone, but if not, reach out to any of the board or committee members. We’ll be glad to help clarify for you.
And one last thing…many of the things you saw in the January Newsletter are the same in this newsletter, because, to be honest, there’s nothing new to report on those items.
February Speaker We are pleased to have Ann Shaw as our February speaker. Here is what Ann has to say about herself and her quilting. “I’m fascinated by pictorial quilts. There is something wonderful about the ways in which images can be translated into cloth. Photographs….especially my own pictures……have been the inspiration for many of my pictorial quilts. Using
photographs as the basis for my quilts has lead me to think differently about taking photographs — to consider what features of an image make it a good candidate for a quilt. Along the way, I discovered a great deal about the process of abstracting a photograph into a sewable quilt design and the qualities about photographs and pictorial quilts that render them related yet visually distinct. Traditional methods of patchwork piecing and the wondrous array of cotton fabrics are the heart and soul of the quilts I create — quilts that are inspired by photographs yet are unapologetically and squarely grounded in the traditions of quiltmaking. In hopes of providing ideas and inspiration for how to think about design elements in quilts, I’ve added this series of short discussions. Creating interesting quilt designs from photographs is foremost a visual process, one that requires careful looking. How we experience pictorial quilts visually is heavily influenced by the nuances of piecing and fabric selections. The quilts I make are abstractions of the photographs and drawings I use as inspiration. Abstracting an image into a quilt design winnows away the details to uncover the essence of the subject, the grace of seams and the textures of cloth that express the subject. In the short pieces that follow, I briefly explore aspects of this creative process — translating Photos into Quilts.”
The Tualatin Valley Quilt Guild (TVQG) meets the third Tuesday of the month January through November. Meetings start at 7:00 p.m. at the Sherwood Senior Center. Guests are welcome and are asked to pay $5.00 at the door.

Row by Row Challenge
The upcoming meeting in January 2017 will be the final meeting for TVQG Members to enter the Row By Row Challenge.
If you didn’t get in on the action last year, it’s still not too late to enter. Simply bring in your entrance fee and a completed row of blocks as outlined in the rules below and see LoisMarie. She will give you very own pizza box
The initial quilter will create the first row.
Each participating quilter will return their box (or completed first row) along with her personal instruction at the February General Meeting.
The block size can be 6 ½” or 9 ½”.
The length of each row can be 39” to 47 ½”.
Fabric can be included.
The row you create will not be sewed on to the previous rows. The original quilter will decide what order she wants the rows to be in.
If the initial quilter wants only certain blocks in the “Row-by-Row” then a list of the patterns and/or suggested websites may be included.
The initial quilter will indicate if a theme is preferred (Christmas, Halloween, autumn, birds, etc.)
The initial quilter will indicate if a type of fabric (color, theme, or design) that is not wanted in the quilt.
UFO Contest I’ll bet there is still a whole bunch of UFO’s sitting around your sewing space just waiting for you to complete. So to give you a little extra nudge, TVQG will hold another UFO contest in 2017

• A Signup Form was distributed to members during the September Meeting.
• If you need a copy of the form it’s been included at the end of this newsletter.

Charity Quilting News
February Update - Charity Quilters
The newly available locked storage closet which
was made available by the Sherwood Senior
Center to our Charity Quilters for fabric storage
has been well received. Especially for Liz,
because she will no longer have to cart totes of
fabric to the monthly Charity Quilting Sew Days.
The Charity Quilters received a huge supply of
fleece fabric which they are transforming into
simple bed covers for the folks at Tigard Good
Neighbor House. Even the smaller pieces and
scraps are being used to create throws, infant
blankets, changing pads, or burp cloths. If you
would like to help with the “Big Fleece Project”
reach out to any of the charity quilters. I can
assure you, we would love the help.
--Betty and Vergie
Wings Update
At our November meeting, Betty let us know she received a letter from Alison at Wings saying the boy’s program is currently on hold. While Wings
continues to work on getting the boy’s program back on track, Alison has asked we still continue to focus making on “masculine themed” quilts for them. On the other hand, the girl’s program at Wings is progressing nicely. The girl’s baked goods are being sold locally and being distributed through local caterers. She also let us know one of the young mom’s is very close to getting her child home with her and that several others of the young mothers in
the program have regained custody of their children.
Charity Quilt Labels
If you need labels for a charity quilt Please see Vergie or Betty. They try to bring a supply to our General Meetings.
Good Neighbor Center
The Good Neighbor Center (GNC), located in Tigard is dedicated to providing safe emergency housing and supportive, empowering services for families. To learn more about them, please visit their web page: Good Neighbor Center.
GNC Donation Item
Every month our members bring to our General Meeting non-quilting related items to be donated to the GNC. The folks there always welcome donations of bedding, towels, cleaning supplies, laundry products or personal grooming supplies, canned goods or dry food products (such as spaghetti, pasta, rice, flour, or sugar), toilet paper, food storage bags, large black garbage bags, disinfectant wipes, disinfectant spray or similar household cleaning products. If you have any of these items on hand, please bring it in, it will be welcomed.
Charity Quilter’s Sew Day
The TVQG Charity Quilters meet monthly on the first Monday of the month at the Sherwood Senior Center. Sewing start time is 10:00 a.m. All TVQG members are invited to attend. Please bring your own sewing machine and basic sewing supplies. A wide selection of fabric is available for you to use in putting together a charity quilt. Finished quilts are donated to Tigard’s Good Neighbor Center, WINGS, or to other charity organizations as needed.
WINGS
WINGS at Hood River is a program that offers young men and women in the Columbia Gorge region that have been “aged out” of the foster care system an opportunity to learn to be employable and self-sustainable. Winter Bazaar Sales Report
Wow….everyone in TVQG pulled together and created a fantastic array of quilted and craft items to sell at the 2016 Winter Bazaar. The Winter Bazaar is an annual event that is held in in King City every November and is hosted by the local Lions Club.
During the two days of the sale, we made an astonishing $1,266. Then at the November Guild meeting, attendees purchased another $139 of items for a grand total of $1,405. Some unsold items were taken home by their designer, but a great many unsold items were shared with the various charitable organizations that we assist.
So, here’s a great big thank you to all who made or purchased items or helped with setup or takedown or manned the sales tables. Your hard work is appreciated.
Spring Sew Day
Stay tuned for information on TVQG’s next sew day. As soon as the time, dates and details of this upcoming event are put into place, we promise you will be the first to know.
