think in terms of biomass – not individual fish biomasses typically move in the same direction individual bass and schools of bass are often part of a much larger biomass of fish think in terms of expansive general areas as opposed to specific spots biomasses generally feed and rest at the same time bass behavior “triggers” can be a sunset, sunrise, or tide change

identifying direction bass are moving is key to staying on top of the fish identify movement using sonar and 15 minute rule biomass movement is often in one direction - east, west, north or south biomass movement often changes/reverses after a “trigger”

adjust your technique and trolling pattern to the behavior of the bass
match tube depth to the depth of marks on sonar troll 3 lines, stagger tubes at different depths until productive depth is determined
use past knowledge of the situation to determine most productive tube experiment with multiple tube lengths and colors until productive tube is determined
by far the most important maximize amount of time tubes are in front of bass use sonar and 15 minute rule to stick with the fish

shoaling behavior more common at night bass tend to hang closer to the surface “silhouette” factor

bass are in resting mode and won’t bite encountered most often during the middle of the season not unusual to troll through acres of bass without a bite can last for an hour or an entire trip when lockjaw bass do bite, the hit is slow and lethargic – small taps on the rod, slow bend, poor hook sets sunset/sunrise snaps bass out of lockjaw

locate a productive stretch of water repeat the same trolling pattern the entire trip all 3 tubes are trolled at the productive depth all 3 tubes are the productive color and length the bass do not have “lock jaw”

bass often move based on time of the day closer to shore in AM – far offshore in PM
early season – shallow water, creeks, harbors mid season – deeper water, offshore late season – shallow water
also includes recent reports < 24 hours old

SONAR STRATEGIES

use 3 variables – time of day, season, where you found them last any life marked on sonar = lines in the water when in doubt, put the lines out!
troll in the direction you were initially cruising maintain a close eye on sonar for additional marks
after 15 minutes no more marks on sonar after 15 minutes no fish are caught after 15 minutes no hits are registered

troll 3 or even 4 lines stagger lines to begin – match the hatch to finish pay close attention to eerily overly productive tubes add a stinger hook trolling speed between 2-2.5mph
