2 January 8, 2017

Dear Mary Star of the Sea Parishioners, We wish you all a very Blessed and Holy New Year and Feast of the Epiphany. On this day Christ revealed Himself not only to His own people Israel, but to the entire Gentile world including you and I. The Three Kings represent all of us throughout the entire world. Christ did not come to be the Messiah only for His own people but He came to be the Savior for all. This is the meaning of the word Epiphany. It means Manifestation or showing. God showed Himself as a humble new born Babe to all of us, the word Incarnate made Flesh, so “Come Let Us Adore Him.” Christ manifested Himself two thousand years ago as a Man among us. But more importantly, He continues to manifest Himself among us each and every day in Holy Mass, where He again becomes Flesh in the Holy Eucharist. “O Come Let Us Adore Him”. Many people in His own day did not recognize Him as the Messiah or God. Many today, do not recognize Him in the Holy Eucharist as Messiah or God. This is a sad reality of our day. So many Catholics and non-Catholics refuse to believe in the real presence of Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist. And yet He is truly present there in every Tabernacle in every Catholic Church here and throughout the world. Many will say if, “I don’t see it I can’t believe in it.” I would say to them, “When was the last time you saw gravity?” And yet we know that it exists. Or when was the last time you saw oxygen and yet we breathe it every day, therefore we know it exists. Jesus hid Himself as King of the Universe as a small baby in Bethlehem. He hides Himself now as King of the Universe, as a small Host in the Tabernacle so that we like the Three Kings can receive Him with Joy and Adore Him. This is why it is so important for us to receive our Blessed Lord worthily. Holy Communion is such a precious gift to each and every one of us. Jesus wishes to give Himself entirely to our heart and soul, yet we have to be prepared to receive Him worthily, so that it may be a true Communion with our God. What does it mean to receive worthily? First and foremost we must be Catholic. Secondly we must be free of grave or mortal sin. To receive Holy Communion, in the state of grave or mortal sin does not help us but rather hurts us and offends Almighty God. Therefore, if we are conscious of any grave or mortal sin, it is better not to receive Holy Communion but rather to go to Confession first so that we can cleanse our souls and truly receive our Blessed Lord worthily after confession. The Three Kings travelled a great distance to worship our Blessed Lord, we have only to go a few blocks or miles to worship our Blessed Lord. They were rewarded for receiving Him worthily, so too will we be rewarded for receiving Him worthily in Holy Communion. Then He will manifest in our souls as He manifested to them that He is truly our God and Messiah. “O Come Let Us Adore Him”. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. Harrigan Pastor

“It’s not how much we give but how much love we put into giving”

-Mother Teresa

Did You Know?/¿Sabia Usted? Start the new year with your kids’ safety in mind: During the start of a new year, many resolve to do things differently: pray more, live better and cherish God’s gifts. It’s also a great time to recommit to putting the safety and well-being of children first. Look to Mary, the Mother of God, for examples. Model honesty, gratitude, and love to your children, and take steps to teach them about safety in the home and the world. This resolution to promote safety and happiness can make your new year the best one yet. For a copy of the VIRTUS© article “Mother of Good Counsel Protect the Vulnerable,” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.

Perpetual Adoration Welcome to the year 2017!

Do you have any New Year’s Resolutions in mind? Would you like to enrich your heart and soul with an hour devoted to our Blessed Lord in the Eucharistic Adoration Chapel? It is a rich and refreshing experience of deep prayer and spiritual guidance. “ May my soul thirst for you, who are the source of all life, wisdom & knowledge.” (St. Bonaventure) “Communicating with Christ”, the Pope explains, “demands that we gaze on Him, allow Him to gaze on us, listen to Him, get to know Him.” The hours for consideration at this time are: Thursday Morning 9-10 a.m. Thursday Morning 10-11 a.m. (Or you can take both hours, if you like!) Thank you for your consideration. I can be reached at 310/548-1693. Barbara West/ Coordinator

Holy Hour

In order to convert America and save the world what we need is for

every parish to come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in Holy Hours of prayer (St. Mother Teresa)

Every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. there is a Eucharistic Holy Hour in our church. The Holy Hour begins with exposition of The Blessed

Sacrament. Within the hour, there are readings from Sacred Scripture and the saints, time for silent reflection, and the Chaplet

of Divine Mercy. The Holy Hour concludes with Benediction. Please come and spend one hour with Jesus. This is

a special time of abundant blessings for all!

Divine Mercy Chaplet

Please join us every third Tuesday of each month in praying the Divine Mercy chaplet after the 5:15 Mass with veneration of the first-class relic of St. Faustina following the chaplet. This is a very powerful prayer as in the words of our Lord:

"Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy

at the hour of death"

Christian Unity.

That all Christians may be faithful to the Lord’s teaching by striving with prayer and fraternal charity to restore ecclesial communion and by collaboration to meet challenges facing

FFFAITHAITHAITH FFFORMATIONORMATIONORMATION

Feast of the Epiphany The term "Epiphany "means to show, to make known or to reveal. Epiphany celebrates God's revealing Jesus' identity as true God, Messiah, and Savior of the world. Through the visit of the Magi, Jesus the Incarnate Word was revealed to the Gentiles and to all of us.

Having adored the new-born Child the Magi returned another way. Once they had encountered Jesus their lives were changed and they could not go back to their old ways - a whole new life la6y ahead. They were to be a 'light to the nations' in proclaiming the birth of Jesus.

We, too, are called to manifest Jesus to our world, to those we encounter in our daily life. We, too, having encountered the Child Jesus are challenged to leave your old ways and to take a new path in the coming year. Recycling: We continue to do our little bit to save the earth by recycling and teaching the children the importance of doing so.

If you need further information on any of the above programs please call Sister Mary or Lorena at
