After four years of transitioning instruction to the standards and two years of using the Smarter Balanced assessment system, what have we learned? OSPI staff will share ideas for using resources, including the Principles to Action, to support instruction. Bring a laptop/tablet and your login information as logistics and pointers on accessing the Digital Library and interim assessment system will be shown to lead-in to using these tools in instruction and a formative assessment process. Participants will develop an understanding of how to support students’ mathematical development aligned to the Washington State K–12 Learning Standards with the goal of preparing them for college and careers.

Civic Action Project is a free project-based way to teach U.S. government that: • promotes effective citizenship, • addresses state standards (including Common Core), and • provides a free interactive web site. Are behavior problems detracting from teaching time in your class-room? You are not alone. Teachers cite this as their greatest chal-lenge and are often shocked by the variety and intensity of behav-ioral issues they face in the classroom (Dalton & Zanville, 2002; Meister & Melnick, 2003). Sound classroom management establishes the environmental context that makes good instruction possible (Emmer & Stough, 2001). The purpose of this presentation is to build your capacity to build a culture of positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) in your classroom. You will learn how to develop and teach behavioral guidelines and expectations, monitor and provide feedback, build student social emotional well-being. You will also learn how to respond to disruptive behavior in a healthier and stress-free fashion. Culturally and linguistically responsive classroom practices for differentiating to meet diverse student needs will be emphasized. Implementing and sustaining PBIS in your classroom will lead to a healthier, safer, and more positive classroom environ-ment. In addition, students with behavioral difficulties will experience improved self-regulation, less depressive symptoms, less externaliz-ing problems, and greater academic engaged time. Teachers imple-menting classroom PBIS report less stress and significantly more time to teach each day, not to mention much fewer power struggles. In this session, you will get an engaging, user-friendly blueprint for implementing and sustaining classroom PBIS. You will come away with doable and simple strategies to establish the positive classroom culture you envision and to keep it going all year.

There was a time not too long ago when we taught students how to sort and organize their files., how to create folders inside of folders and basically do what we do in the physical world to our digital life. Then came the Internet and its endless websites. We tried to organ-ize them but at last there were too many. So we turned to something different….we stopped trying to organize the web and we started searching it. Search is the skill of our era, a life skill that once mas-tered opens up all sorts of opportunities. Do we teach search in your classrooms and schools? This session will focus on the skills and strategies of search. Participants will walk away with K-12 lesson plans, ideas and classroom routines they can start using tomorrow in their classroom to teach students the skill needed most in today’s connected world - the skill of search.

In this presentation we demonstrate a model for social emotional learning (SEL) for students with behavioral disorders within a multi-tiered system of support. We begin with a brief overview of the essential elements of primary level prevention system (Tier I) with emphasis on SEL. We offer strategies for embedding SEL into a multi-tier system of supports. We continue with a brief overview of evidence-based, standard protocol Tier II behavioral supports and data-based individualization. We conclude with demonstration of an easy to use, web-based system for teaching core SEL skills, screening, progress monitoring, and tier II and III SEL intervention.

The 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Vocabulary Report highlighted the dire need for schools to provide elementary school English learners and youths from low-income families with informed, consistent vocabulary instruction aligned with critical Common Core academic competencies such as comparing, making inferences, and describing causes and effects. Productive word knowledge, the ability to effectively use a word in speech and writing, is pivotal to academic interaction, presentation, and text dependent response. Drawing on scholarship and extensive classroom experience, Dr. Kinsella demonstrates explicit instruction of high-utility, competency-aligned word families (e.g., compare, comparison; infer. inference) underscoring skillful competent academic communication and explains how to design application tasks and formative assessments that deepen productive word knowledge. This course will cover: basics of language acquisition, pre-evaluation checklist/processes, interpretation of Washington English Language Proficiency Assessment (WELPA) scores and the Transitional Bilingual Instructional Program (TBIP) peer analysis. It will also demonstrate the use of the Cultural Linguistic Interpretative Matrix (C-LIM) on standardized test results with consideration of cultural loading and linguistic demand, when evaluating a student for Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD). "El camino al éxito" is a research-based Spanish Kindergarten curriculum designed to provide intervention to small groups of at-risk children learning to read in Spanish. It is a daily 30-minute program that includes 118 lessons, with explicit teaching routines and fun activities. "El camino" was developed in 2006 in the Tigard-Tualatin School District in Oregon and meets Common Core Standards. The workshop will present the components of the curriculum and re-search demonstrating its effectiveness.

Room 3102/04 Algebra without homework? - Reaching Every Student

Many students can’t or won’t do homework. The traditional math class with a minimum of instruction and large homework assignments does not work for these students. Last year I challenged myself to teach Algebra 2 classes without homework, and the result was very successful. Times are changing, and in this presentation I will dis-cuss the innovations necessary to make this work. The goal is to reach every student.

Modules are self contained, topic specific and are designed to fit in to 1 classroom period. Nano-Link provides activity materials to educators at no cost. In these sessions, participants will practice several of the hands-on activities, learn the basic concepts of nanotechnology and how to integrate the modules into their classes. The 2011 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Vocabulary Report highlighted the dire need for schools to provide

high school English learners and youths from low-income families with informed, consistent vocabulary instruction aligned with critical Common Core academic competencies such as comparing, making inferences, and describing causes and effects. Productive word knowledge, the ability to effectively use a word in speech and writing, is pivotal to academic interaction, presentation, and text dependent response. Drawing on scholarship and extensive classroom experi-ence, Dr. Kinsella demonstrates explicit instruction of high-utility, competency-aligned word families (e.g., compare, comparison; infer. inference) underscoring skillul competent academic communication and explains how to design application tasks and formative assess-ments that deepen productive word knowledge. Participants observe video footage and review sample lessons, note-taking guide formats, and competency aligned word lists to establish a program-wide high-utility vocabulary initiative.

Strand: Curriculum; Instruction; Technology National Science Foundation funded Nano-Link: Center for Nanotechnology Education, has created over 25 modules that bring nanoscale concepts to chemistry, physics, biology and material science classes. Modules are self contained, topic specific and are designed to fit in to 1 classroom period. Nano-Link provides activity materials to educators at no cost. In these sessions, participants will practice several of the hands-on activities, learn the basic concepts of nanotechnology and how to integrate the modules into their classes. These sessions (Part I and II) will also discuss how to use the modules for critical thinking and problem based learning.

Strand: Instruction Music literacy is a major goal in elementary music classrooms, but

students often find it among the least interesting activities. In this session, learn how to write short literacy segments in order to maximize learning but minimize time spent, providing more time in a lesson to spend on kid-preferred activities. The session will include a specific sequence for teaching the pattern of four sixteenth notes, and videos of children participating in the literacy activities will be shown.
