McCovey Chronicles SF Giants Minor Lines 7/17/17: Cory Taylor throws 7 shutout innings Roger Fox may not let Ken Rosenthal write columns anymore, but he can still compose tweets, and yesterday he composed a very interesting one for the Giants: You can read the entire saga elsewhere, but for now what matters is the Giants seized an opportunity to essentially steal an extra high round pick: Here’s a snippet of Baseball America’s pre-draft report on Conlon: That progress continued this spring, when Conlon came out with a much cleaner, easier delivery and in outstanding physical shape. His fastball works consistently in the low 90s and touches 95 mph and Conlon has feel for a sharp slider that competes in the strike zone. He's flashes some feel for a changeup, but the pitch is far from what it could be with more reps. Conlon is praised for his attitude and approach to the game, as well as his work ethic and desire to improve. He has the arm speed and the frame to eventually sit in the mid 90s and touch higher. In other words, Conlon’s something like a RH version of Seth Corry, which gives the Giants two decent upside HS picks from this draft without a lot of wiggle room for it in their allotted pool. And at the rate that HS arms develop, having more than one is a very good thing. Nice swooping Giants! Still a long way to go to make this system competitive with the top teams in the division but you build it back up one acquisition at a time. HIGHLIGHTS: Cory Taylor threw 7 shutout innings; Diego Rincones and Beicker Mendoza both had three hits including double, HR. He threw a PCL low of 4.1 IP (in 99 pitches) and gave up a season high (at either level) of 5 earned runs. Like some of the other “finesse”

type pitchers the Giants have had recently (Ty Blach, Clayton Blackburn) his walk numbers have increased in AAA as he tries to nibble around the edges with his stuff and finds AAA hitters less willing to chase. After walking just 15 batters in 67 innings in AA earlier in the year, he’s now walked 15 in half that (34 innings) in the PCL including 13 over his last four starts (23.1 IP). And one could excuse the instinct to want to nibble as Suarez gave up a good amount of hard contact yesterday, with 4 of his 7 hits allowed going for extra bases (two doubles and two triples). The RiverCats made a half hearted late rally with three runs in the 7th, predominantly thanks to Juniel Querecueto’s 1st HR of the season. Not too much else to say about this game, other than the indisputable fact that this is an illegal pitching motion: Stupid Rob Manfred. The AA challenge has been a real struggle this year for Taylor, and he’s had an especially rough time of it lately with 17 runs allowed in his previous four starts covering just 18.2 IP. But last night he kept the walks in check (though he threw just 57 strikes in 98 pitches), piled up the groundballs (9 groundball outs) and picked up 6 Ks in his best outing of the year. Here he gets out of a jam in the 6th by striking out the Tigers ultra-powerful #2 prospect Christin Stewart: Though the Squirrels hitters didn’t do too much more with Taylor’s counterpart, Beau Burrows, they did manage to scratch out single runs in the 3rd and 6th on run scoring doubles from Myles Schroder and Brandon Bednar. They then broke it open with two runs against the bullpen in the 7th. Led by three hits apiece from Slade Heathcott and CJ Hinojosa, the offense did just enough to support Taylor’s great effort.

Let’s enjoy a little bit of CJ Hinojosa being a pest and swiping a bag (his 2nd of the year) without a pitch being thrown. The Giants went just 1 of 8 with RISP, muting the fact that four of their seven hits went for extra bases. Bryan Reynolds two hits included his league leading 8th triple of the year. Reynolds also stole his 2nd base of the year. Though he wasn’t in the lineup, Steven Duggar spent time with Joe Ritzo prior to the game and said that he felt 100% healthy finally. You can listen to that interview here. On a less happy note, Jalen Miller receives a pretty bad writeup in today’s “Notes from the FIeld” at Baseball Prospectus (Subscribers only). He allowed two rather innocuous runs in the first inning — a drag bunt, a two out double and then spectacularly bad WP/C throwing error that allowed the second run to come in from 2b. But in the second things really unraveled as Vizcaino allowed four hits (including a double and triple), hit a batter, walked a batter, and threw a pick off attempt into RF (seriously suggestion: no more pick off attempts in A ball). That made the score 6-0. Vizcaino was left in the game, however, and seemed to find his footing in the scoreless 3rd and 4th innings. But he allowed four of the first five batters to reach base in the 5th and that was the end of his night. The last out he picked up came on a relay that nabbed a runner trying to score on a double into the corner. The big game jumped Vizcaino’s ERA up over 5. Since his terrific first start, he’s now allowed 18 ER in his last 5 starts over 26 IP. It certainly didn’t help him that the team made five errors, including two from Catcher Skyler Ewing who now has 14 errors this year in just 51 games played. One of the errors came from Kelvin Beltre and almost immediately after that he was replaced in the game by a PH. Hard to know if there was any cause/effect in that chain, but it did cause OF Jean Angomas to come into the game as a 2b for just the second time in his career. We’ll keep an eye on Beltre to see if he’s back in there today. Sandro Fabian hit his 6th HR of the year, a solo shot for his only hit of the game. But the Volcanoes couldn’t bring him in, and that would become a theme of the night for Salem-Keizer. They collected 10 hits and two walks but only managed a single run. Spokane, with only five hits on the night but one was a long HR, and three of them were bunched into a single inning against Logan Webb to provide the difference. The Volcanoes did make a late charge in the 9th when Robinson Medrano doubled to leadoff, and Gustavo Cabrera and Kevin Rivera picked up hits as well. But with the tying and go ahead runs on base Ziegler grounded into a force out to end it. Webb continued his strong comeback from TJ with 4 Ks over 2 IP. The RHP now has 13 Ks against just 1 walk in 10 innings. The run was just the second he’s allowed this year. Fifth round pick Jason Bahr finished up with a perfect inning and two Ks. If you happen to be in the Keizer area, you might want to head to the ballpark Saturday night. You’re off EVERY FOURTH NIGHT! You still have to rest Ramos and Gonzalez every third game? GRRRRRRRRR.

Oh well. Even without the star prospects the humming machinery of the AZL Giants’ offense purred along. Beicker Mendoza and Diego Rincones were both (sing it with me!) a triple shy of a cycle! The 18 year old Rincones continues to swing out of his gourd. That’s now 15 for 26 over his last six games with four doubles, a triple and two HRs. Yowza! He also has a tidy 5BB/5K ratio going for him, which is nice to see from a teenager. 19 year old Beicker (Sandro Fabian’s old running mate on the DSL championship team) has had very limited playing time in his repeat of the complex league, but he’s hit when he’s been in there. In 29 at bats he’s hit .379/.419/.586. Sidney Duprey picked up 4 Ks in 4 innings, allowing just two hits including a solo HR. The 20 year old lefty from Puerto Rico is beginning to turn the season around after being demoted from Salem-Keizer. At 13-6 the Giants have the AZL’s best record. DSL Giants game was suspended in the 4th inn It will be completed today. Frankling Labour collected two singles and two SB and Alexander Canario had a double in two at bats. This is going to get more confusing than the Woodses. And speaking of Grant Watson, he had some news this week. Sacramento Rivercats News Sacramento's comeback falls short against El Paso Evan Arnold Gordon The Sacramento River Cats (38-56) fell 7-3 to the El Paso Chihuahuas (48-47) in the first game of their four-game set as they returned home to Raley Field Monday night for the first time since the All-Star break. Trailing 6-0, Juniel Querecuto highlighted the comeback effort in the seventh, smacking a two-run homer to ignite the rally. A couple batters later, Carlos Moncrief singled up the middle, scoring Ali Castillo and bringing Sacramento within three. That would be it for the Sacramento offense however, as they collected four of their seven hits in the frame before going quietly in the eighth and ninth innings. Andrew Suarez got the start for the River Cats and threw a season-low 4.1 innings before giving way to reliever Collin Balester. The southpaw allowed five runs over the 4.1 innings while striking out five and

walking three. Balester allowed one run over his 2.2 innings. Kraig Sitton was charged with an unearned run in the ninth, keeping his streak of no earned runs allowed alive at 10.1 innings (eight games). Albert Suarez (0-0, 0.00) will make his first start for Sacramento tomorrow night and will face El Paso's Zach Lee (2-3, 6.80). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. (PT) and the game can be heard live on the air on ESPN 1320 and online at rivercats.com. Postgame Notes Suarez: Andrew Suarez tied his season-high by allowing five earned runs tonight…of the seven hits he allowed tonight, four went for extra bases (two doubles and two triples)…has now thrown 599 pitches (376 strikes) over his six outings (99 per game)…in four home games, is now 1-3 with a 6.85 ERA (22.1 IP, 12 ER). Querecuto: Shortstop Juniel Querecuto hit his first home run of the season tonight…marked his first long ball since July 31, 2016 with Double-A Montgomery…is now slugging .309 this year with 17 RBI. Castillo & Moncrief: Second baseman Ali Castillo and center fielder Carlos Moncrief each had two-hit nights…was Castillo's sixth two-hit game and Moncrief's ninth…Moncrief also stole his fourth base of the season tonight…is now 5-for-10 with four RBI over his last two games. One Shy: Sacramento snapped their three-game win streak tonight…have won four straight just once this year (6/2-6/5). Richmond Squirrels News Taylor Blanks Erie; Squirrels Win Series Opener Erie, PA - Richmond right-hander Cory Taylor blanked the Erie SeaWolves (47-45) over seven solid innings, leading the Flying Squirrels (39-53) in a 4-0 victory at UPMC Park on Monday. Taylor allowed just four hits in the win and relievers Cody Hall and Jarret Martin finished of the second shutout of the season for Richmond. The Squirrels compiled nine hits, including three apiece from Slade Heathcott and C.J. Hinojosa. Richmond will attempt to make it three straight wins on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. Richmond faired slightly better in facing Tigers No. 3 prospect Beau Burrows in his second start against the Squirrels. Burrows escaped trouble in the first inning after C.J. Hinojosa singled and Jerry Sands walked, K.C. Hobson struck out to end the threat. Burrows punched out the side, but used 20 pitches in the inning. The Squirrels turned to Cory Taylor to start the series opener in his first outing since the All-Star break. Taylor was in control from the outset, facing the minimum through the first three innings. The Squirrels grabbed a 1-0 lead off of Burrows in the fourth inning, in part due to a head's up base running play from Hinojosa. With two outs, Hinojosa singled to right field and then caught the defense off guard with a straight steal of second base before the pitch was thrown. Myles Schroder followed - after taking a close two-strike pitch - then socked a double that bounced off the track and over the wall. The automatic double was ruled and scored Hinojosa from second base for a 1-0 lead. Taylor continued to cruise for Richmond, albeit he did run into difficulty in the fourth inning. With two outs, Taylor walked Dominic Ficociello and Christin Stewart. The righty escaped the jam by whiffing the

powerful Steven Moya. Taylor mowed the side down in order in the fifth inning, using just 64 pitches in the first five frames. Richmond added a run and forced Burrows from the game in the top of the sixth. With Jerry Sands on first base, Brandon Bednar lined a double into the gap in right center field .Right fielder Steven Moya missed the ball, allowing Sands to score from first base as it reached the wall for a 2-0 lead. The doubled knocked out Burrows and brought in Gerson Moreno from the Erie bullpen. Moreno recorded the final out of the inning, stranding a runner in scoring position. Burrows (2-3 ) tossed 5.2 innings and allowed the two runs on six hits in the defeat. The former first-round pick struck out a Double-A high six batters and walked two on 96 itches. Pitching with the lead, the day belonged to Taylor. The right-hander completed his longest outing of the season by hurling seven solid innings to earn the win. Taylor worked with more than one runner on base just twice in the outing and struck out six. He scattered four hits and did not allow a run on 98 pitches. Cody Hall picked up where Taylor left off, striking out two in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jarret Martin tossed the ninth to finish the win. San Jose Giants Storm Top Giants To Even Series LAKE ELSINORE, CA - Storm starting pitcher Jacob Nix tossed seven strong innings with just two runs allowed and Lake Elsinore never looked back after a three-run bottom of the fourth en route to a 4-2 victory over the Giants on Monday evening at The Diamond. The teams have now split the first two games of their series. Ryan Howard (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) hit a two-run home run in the top of the third to account for all of San Jose's offense in defeat. Bryan Reynolds (2-for-3, 3B) added two hits, including his league-leading eighth triple of the season. Nix (3-2) surrendered just five hits and issued only one walk during his seven-inning performance to pick-up the win. The right-hander struck out three. David Bednar and Trevor Frank then worked scoreless eighth and ninth innings respectively out of the bullpen to seal the Storm victory. Frank earned his sixth save of the year. The Giants jumped out early scoring first for a fifth consecutive game. In the top of the third, Jalen Miller doubled with one out. After Ronnie Jebavy popped out, Howard stepped to the plate and crushed the first pitch of his at-bat over the fence down the left field line for a two-run homer. The home run, Howard's seventh of the season, gave San Jose a 2-0 lead. Mark Reyes started on the mound for the Giants and began his night with three hitless innings. Reyes pitched around a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first before working through a two-out walk in the second. He then breezed through a perfect third inning to maintain the two-run San Jose lead. Lake Elsinore though would breakthrough for three runs in the bottom of the fourth against Reyes to move in front. Back-to-back singles from Austin Allen and Edwin Moreno started the inning for the Storm. Kyle Overstreet then ripped a single down the right field line to bring home Allen with the first Lake Elsinore run. And when right fielder Heath Quinn mishandled the ball for an error, Moreno also raced home to tie the game 2-2. Overstreet, meanwhile, moved to second on the miscue. Reyes then

uncorked a wild pitch advancing Overstreet to third before Carlos Belen hit a sacrifice fly to deep left center giving the Storm a 3-2 lead. Nix set down the Giants in order in the fourth and fifth innings before pitching out of trouble in the sixth and seventh. In the top of the sixth, Aramis Garcia smacked a two-out double into the right center field gap, but was stranded at second when Dillon Dobson grounded out. An inning later, Jonah Arenado reached on a two-out infield single and was awarded second on the play when third baseman Ruddy Giron's throw to first sailed out of play. Nix though was once again able to leave the potential tying run in scoring position as he retired Miller on a fly out to left ending the inning. Lake Elsinore then extended their lead to 4-2 with a single run in the bottom of the seventh against San Jose reliever Matt Solter (2 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 SO). Belen led off the inning with a double to deep right center and immediately scored when the next batter, Chris Baker, singled to center. In the eighth, the Giants threatened against Bednar, but again came away empty-handed. Consecutive one-out singles from Howard and Reynolds put the potential tying runs on base, however Bednar then struck out Garcia and set down Dobson on a fly out to center ending the inning. Frank struck out two in a perfect top of the ninth for the Storm to finish the game. Reyes (4-11) suffered his league-leading 11th loss for San Jose. Reyes was charged with three runs (two earned) on five hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out three during his 90-pitch outing. Notes * San Jose (40-55 overall, 10-15 second half) was attempting to win a third straight game. The Giants last won three games in a row June 25-27. * Lake Elsinore out-hit San Jose 9-7. * The Giants were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position (Howard's home run was the only hit). * Howard produced his fourth consecutive multi-hit game. He ranks second in the California League with a .327 batting average. * Garcia's double was his team-leading 20th of the season. * Solter (forearm) was activated off the disabled list before the game on Monday. He made his first appearance since June 6. Pitcher Michael Cederoth was placed on the 7-day DL. * San Jose fell to 2-4 on their road trip. On Deck The Giants and Storm play the rubber game of their three-game series on Tuesday evening with first pitch at The Diamond scheduled for 6:00 PM. Grant Watson (2-1, 3.69 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Lake Elsinore is expected to counter with Jesse Scholtens (3-5, 4.84 ERA). The game can be heard live on sjgiants.com with coverage beginning at 5:40 PM. Salem Keizer Volcanoes News Salem-Keizer fall short in pitcher's duel Traven Tapson Spokane, WA -- The Volcanoes came up short against the Indians on Monday night in a rare Northwest League pitcher's duel that breezed by in a brisk 2 hours and 35 minutes. Despite out hitting the Indians, the Volcanoes went just 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position in the 2 to 1 loss.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second when shortstop Christian Inoa launched a tape-measure solo shot high off the net that sits roughly fifty feet behind the left field fence to give the Indians a 1 to 0 lead. The Volcanoes first scoring opportunity came in the top of the fourth when right fielder Logan Baldwin and shortstop Orlando Garcia hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Baldwin then attempted to tag and score on a fly ball to left field off the bat of Ryan Kirby but was gunned down on at the plate on a spectacular throw by left fielder Austin O'Banion. The Volcanoes got a tremendous pitching performance from left hander Matt Lujan, who was pitching on a rehab assignment. Outside of surrendering a solo home run, Lujan was near perfect on the night, giving up just one other hit and striking out four across five innings. While Lujan was great, Indians left hander Cole Ragans was better as the Rangers number nine prospect overpowered Volcanoes hitters all night. Ragans, who currently leads the Northwest League in strikeouts, did not give up any runs while striking out eight on just five hits. Coming into the game, Ragans was also tied for the league lead in walks, but was able to hone in his command as the 19-year-old southpaw issued just two walks. Ragans was able to neutralize hitters with a deadly changeup that he mixed in with an electric 92-94 mph fastball. The lefty also featured a plus curveball that he used mainly against left handed batters. The Indians added a much-needed insurance run in the 7th on a throwing error by Volcanoes third baseman Michael Sexton to take a 2 to 0 lead. A night after the Volcanoes had a dramatic come from behind win against the Indians bullpen, they once again threatened in the late innings. With runners on first and third and two away in the ninth, second baseman Kevin Rivera laced an opposite field single to left to put the Volcanoes within a run. With runners on first and second and the game on the line, the Indians brought in right hander Josh Advocate to face Volcanoes star center fielder Malique Ziegler. After drawing the count full, Ziegler grounded out to third for the game's final out.
