Case No. 2 - February, 2008 B

Accession #30355

A 1-month-o\d male infant was found to have a 4.0 x 5.0 em skull mass. The lesion was easi ly separated from the dura and scalp at surgery.

Gross Pathology: The 27 gram specimen consisted of two pink-tan soft tissue fragments measuring 4.0 x 3.5 x

2.5 em and 3.0 x 3.0 x 1.5 em. The external surface was pink-tan, fairly smooth and unremarkable. Sectioning revealed rubbery to firm white-tan tissue.

Clinical Abstract:

Case No. 3 - February, 2008 B

Accession #30437

This 49-year-old woman presented with an abdominal mass. A composite resection, including the abdominal tumor with adherent small bowel and colon segments, was perfonned.

Gross Pathology: The 2,300 gram, 21.0 x 19.0 x 12.0 em composite resection included the tumor surrounded and

intersected by a 49.0 x 5.0 x 5.0 em segment of transverse colon and matted loops of small intestine. The outer surfaces of the large and small intestines were smooth, glistening and unremarkable. Serial sectioning of the specimen revealed a 13.0 x 12.0 x 11.0 em mass that was adherent to the loops ofthe small intestine and the transverse colon. The cut surface of the mass was yellow-tan with areas of cystic degeneration. Opening of the loops of the small intestine revealed focal areas where the tumor was invading into the intestinal wall.

Special Studies: Positive: Smooth muscle actin (faint, focal positivity). Negative: Desrnin, Muscle specific acti n, S-100 protein, CD117, CD34.
