CULTURAL DIVERSITY AND THE MĀORI DIMENSION

How will the school reflect?

New Zealand’s cultural diversity

All cultures within the school will be valued and accepted through active encouragement of a non-racist school culture and ethos.

Staff members will ensure that students from all cultures are treated with respect and dignity, and will actively work towards maximising the

potential of each student

The unique position of the Māori culture

Turua School will endeavour to develop an awareness of Tikanga Māori and Te Reo Māori and provide the means

of fostering cultural understanding consistent with the Treaty of Waitangi.

What reasonable steps will the school take to incorporate Te Reo and Tikanga Māori into the school’s curriculum?

Classroom activities and school events will reflect Māori culture through signage, waiata, greetings, stick games,

commands, and language related to everyday objects, days, dates, numeration and kapa haka.

School wide Te Reo and tikanga programmes, using ‘Ka Mau te Wehi’.

We will endeavour to include components of Tikanga Māori as appropriate to the topic and the class level.

What steps will be taken to discover the views and concerns of the school’s Māori community?

The school will encourage Māori representation on the Board of Trustees.

The school will consult with the Māori community annually.
