Students who study TVET courses with the Northern Sydney Institute gain units towards their HSC and gain practical and relevant skills and contribute to a future TAFE and/or university qualification.

Karla Jane Wilson, who studied Human Services, said of her course “I thoroughly enjoyed studying anatomy and physiology and then applying that knowledge in a practical setting at Sydney Private Hospital, where I did work experience for a week this year. This course is a fantastic subject to do for your HSC! As well as being able to study a nursing course while at school, this subject contributes to your ATAR and will leave you with a Certificate III in Health Services Assistance. It’s a win–win situation!”

Once the HSC is over the Northern Sydney Institute offers many pathways and options to accommodate a successful academic experience.

So if you would like to consider your HSC options and study with the best, think TVET at the Northern Sydney Institute!

Jusin Cai, Tristan Scott and Karla Jane Wilson

I chose electrotechnology because it seemed like an enjoyable and fun

course that was related to metals and engineering as well as the fact

that it was able to count towards my atar. the highlight of the

course was definitely my first work experience where I think I confirmed

my love for electronics.Justin Cai

while studying for your higher school Certificate, consider getting a head–start on the road to your future career and pick up important life skills along the way.TVET Courses are a great study option because they allow you to:

» Complete BOSTES units that count towards your HSC

» Gain practical skills that will make you job-ready

» Experience an adult learning environment

» Become more independent and confident

» Start or complete a nationally recognised TAFE NSW qualification at the same time as you do your HSC

» Prepare for further study and reduce study time post school

» Choose from courses that are not offered at school

» Meet other students who have the same interests and career aspirations as you

» Meet teachers who are connected to industry and are experts in their fields.

board deVeloped Industry CurrICulum framework CoursesCourses that are developed by the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES). These courses generally count towards 2 units per year of study toward the HSC and following the optional HSC examination, can count toward the calculation of a student’s ATAR. All Board Developed Courses have a mandatory work placement requirement of 35 hours per 2 units of study. These courses provide a nationally recognised qualification which can give you credit toward future TAFE and university education.

board endorsed Course non-framework CoursesThese courses are endorsed by the BOSTES and can count towards the units for the HSC but do not have an HSC exam so will not contribute to an ATAR. The units of competency that you complete will give you credit toward further TAFE study after the HSC. The second year of a Board Endorsed Course will only run if there are viable student numbers to facilitate a class.

extensIon and speCIalIsatIon CoursesIf a student is completing or has completed a 240 hour course, they may choose to add additional study through an extension or specialisation course. These extension courses can be one (60 hour), two (120 hour), three (180 hour) or four (240 hour) units of study. Board Developed Extension Courses do not contribute towards an ATAR as there is no exam. These courses will give additional units of competency toward further study and extra career skills for dedicated students.

All Board Developed Courses can offer extension and specialisation options subject to demand. Please speak to your School Liaison Officer or email us at [email protected].

About TVET

what about an australIan tertIary admIssIon rank (atar)? You can include one Board Developed, Industry Curriculum Framework (240 hour) VET course including Work Placement in the calculation of your ATAR. The HSC exam is optional for VET courses.

Board Endorsed Courses do not count towards an ATAR.

what unIts wIll a tVet Course gIVe me?They are the same unit values as school electives. Generally 2 units per course per year.

what wIll tVet Cost?Students from government schools are supported by funds from the NSW Department of Education and Training and there are no additional costs incurred by the student.

Students from non–government schools may incur some costs or these may be met by the school. Please check with your school Careers Advisor for more details.

All mandatory equipment, textbooks and safety equipment will be provided by TAFE NSW at no charge to the student.

how wIll tVet fIt Into my sChool tImetable? Most TVET courses are run on a VET school day (usually Tuesday afternoon for four hours). Check with your Year Advisor on what happens at your school.

attendanCe at tafeWhile you are attending your TAFE NSW course you will assume the role of a TAFE NSW student. This means you are bound by the rules and regulations of TAFE NSW campus. If you break the rules you will be disciplined by the Campus Manager in consultation with your School Principal and you may be asked to leave the course. It is expected that you attend all lessons and stay for the whole time. If you do not, your Careers Advisor will be notified. If your attendance is poor and assessment events are missed without

notification, you may risk receiving a Non Completion Determination. If you do not improve your attendance, diligence, effort or attitude after two warning letters, you will be issued an N Determination, which means you will NOT be able to count your TAFE NSW course as units of study towards your Preliminary or HSC year.

what If I am sICk or haVe to leaVe early? You are expected to contact your TAFE School Liaison Officer (TSLO) if sick or absent from class.

A medical certificate is required as proof of illness if you miss an assessment event.

pupIl free daysTAFE NSW does not have pupil free days. If your school has a pupil free day that falls on your TAFE day, it is still expected that you will attend TAFE.

students takIng holIdays durIng theIr tVet CourseIt is recommended that students contemplating extended, planned leave do not apply for a TVET course. As classes are only once a week for 4 hours, it is not possible to make up this time within the TVET NSW class. The BOSTES requires TAFE NSW to report on students satisfactorily covering the course content and meeting the mandatory 120 hour or 240 hour course requirements.

what about work plaCement? Some courses have mandatory work placement which is generally 35 hours (1 week full time) per year of study, some courses may vary. If you do not complete work placement, you will automatically receive an N Determination as this is a BOSTES requirement for completion of the course. Work placement is a fantastic opportunity for you to experience the workplace and develop your employability skills. We will find the work placement for you and assist you in preparing for this experience.

what do I wear to tVet?This will vary between courses and you will be advised by your teacher at your first lesson. It may be school uniform, your own appropriate clothing or a specific uniform that TAFE NSW will provide to you, e.g. chefs uniform for cookery. Where required, students are provided with personal protective equipment (PPE). Students are expected to bring this equipment to each TVET lesson. Failure to bring PPE will result in the student being excluded from class and requested to return to school. The school and parent/guardian will be notified.

If I haVe a dIsabIlIty, Can I do a tVet Course? Please ensure you complete the disability section on the expression of interest form. We will work with you to choose a TVET course that will be appropriate to your abilities. We also have additional courses that have be specially created for students with additional support needs. The courses have been adapted to provide the best learning opportunities for each student and we will give you additional learning support in class. Your needs will be discussed with your school representative and a TAFE Teacher Consultant and yourself. Consideration also needs to be given to the completion of mandatory work placement as part of the Board Developed Courses. See your Careers Advisor for more assistance.

how Can I apply for tVet?You apply through your school’s Careers Advisor. You need to ask for an Expression of Interest form, complete with the signatures of the school and your parents/guardian. This form is then scanned and sent to the TAFE School Liaison Officer (TSLO). Schools retain the Expression of Interest form in accordance with the State Records Act 1998.

haVe I been aCCepted Into the Course?Once all Expressions of Interest have been received, offers for course places will be made to students. Courses will only run if there are a sufficient number of

students to form a viable class. You will receive regular updates from the TSLO at your elected campus showing your student status.

Can late students stIll apply? The application process is an ongoing process up to and including the first three TVET weeks of TAFE if vacancies exist in TVET courses.

when do I start?Students are expected to attend from the first week of Term 1. Where the student does not present for enrolment without good reason, it is possible that their position in the course will be in jeopardy.

School Based Apprentices/Trainees are expected to enrol during main TAFE NSW enrolments. Contact your TAFE School Liaison Officer, details in this guide.

what If I deCIde to wIthdraw? If you undertake a two year course and then decide to withdraw after the first year, if you have met requirements including completing the 120 hours you may gain your 2 units of credit. If you are studying a framework course you must complete the 120 hours and 35 hours work placement to gain the 2 units credit. Students who do not do this will result in an N Determination.

For more information on TVET courses check out The Northern Sydney Institute’s TVET page at nsi.edu.au/tvet.

One thousand year 10 and 11 students were trained

across four schools in the greater Melbourne region.

87% of students with parent consent completed evaluation surveys

before, after and three months after the training.

Recognition of depression was already quite high: 86% of students correctly identified depression in a vignette before the course.

Recognition of an anxiety disorder in a vignette

significantly increased after the course.

This effect was still seen after three months

Students’ confidence in helping a peer with a mental health problem significantly increased after the course. This effect was also maintained after three months.

Students also reported they were more willing to disclose their own mental health problem to others (47% before vs 61% after).

There were also positive changes to the attitudes of students towards people with a mental health problem. Students:

were LESS LIKELY to believe that mental

health problems

increase dangerousness

were LESS LIKELY to believe that mental health

problems are a sign of personal weakness

showed LESS DESIRE for social distance

(likelihood of rejecting a person with a mental illness in certain situations, such as working on a school project together)

This research was funded by beyondblue: the national depression and anxiety initiative
