"Moron," which has been repeated often on the news recently, was coined in 1910 by Henry H. Goddard, an American psychologist and eugenicist.

Goddard, fascinated with intelligence and convinced that feeble-mindedness was inherited (the result of a single recessive gene), published a study on the heredity of feeble-mindedness. Entitled The Kallikak Family, the study examined two intelligent strains of this family (real name not Kallikak): one "good" (normal) and one "bad" (defective).

Out of his research, which he later admitted was flawed, he introduced a new measurement for intelligence, replacing "feeble-mindedness" with "moron," a word he borrowed from a Greek root ("moros") meaning "dull" or "foolish."

With this replacement, psychologists placed individuals with cognitive

disabilities in three categories: "idiot," "imbecile," and, the least severe, "moron."

As an eugenicist, Goddard believed, as his colleague Harry Laughlin explained, "the character of a nation is determined primarily by . . . the hereditary physical, mental, and moral temperamental traits of its people." In other words, Goddard believed "better breeding" would create a better American.

Thus, Goddard perceived morons as a serious threat to America. He wrote in 1912:

"The idiot is not our greatest problem. He is indeed loathsome. . . . Nevertheless, he lives his life and is done. He does not continue the race with a line of children like himself. . . . It is the moron type that makes for us our great problem."

With immigrants arriving at Ellis Island

every day, he and other eugenicists feared there were "morons" among them. In 1913, he sent assistants to Ellis Island to identify "morons." When he reported that forty percent of Jews and immigrants from southern and eastern Europe qualified as morons, he commented, "it is never wise to discard a scientific result because of apparent absurdity."

As a result of his work, as well as other contributing factors, the United States began implementing laws and policies that led to the sterilization of people and the establishment of immigration quotas for people from southern and eastern Europe. Meanwhile, individuals from northern and western Europe, such as James Reston, Mary Anne MacLeod, and Karl Dane, slipped into America.

Goddard advocated for both sterilization and immigration quotas because he believed an America filled with morons was unfit for democracy, which is a similar concern Donald Trump expressed in 2014 when he tweeted a cartoon circulating on social media that featured American founding fathers with the caption: "I keep thinking we should include something in the Constitution in case the people elect a moron."

"An interesting cartoon," Trump tweeted.

Indeed!

" I keep thinking we should include something in the Constitution in case the people elect a moron."

THE REMAINS OF THE DAY QUOTE?If you are under the impression you have already perfected yourself, you will never rise to the heights that you are no doubt capable of."

Kazuo Ishiguro, Author of The Remains of the Day

" Both the most autobiographical and the most exper imental book, the narrator finds herself haunted by the story of her older sister, who died a mere two hours after bir th. A fragmented exploration of white things - the swaddling bands that were also her shroud, the breast milk she did not live to dr ink, the blank page on which the narrator herself attempts to reconstruct the story - unfold in a powerfully poetic distillation. As she walks the unfamiliar, snow-streaked streets, lined by buildings former ly obliterated in the Second Wor ld War, their identities blur and over lap as the narrator wonders, 'Can I give this life to you?'"

" In Smith's Winter, lifeforce matches up to the toughest of the seasons. In this second novel in her acclaimed Seasonal cycle, the follow-up to her sensational Autumn, Smith's shape-shifting quar tet of novels casts a merry eye over a bleak post-truth era with a story rooted in history, memory and warmth, its taproot deep in the evergreens: ar t, love, laughter."

" Should the provost get the urge to press the key that erases all Jenzabar data, Jay Howell and John Dilustro have been instructed to tackle him."

Thanks to today's sprawling hardware havens, i t is easy to assume that the do-it -yourself home-improvement phenomenon is relat ively new. However, i t really began in earnest during the postwar, baby-boom years.

The Do It Yourself TV program that premiered in the UK in 1957, taught men everything they never needed to know about doing jobs around the home.

First published in 1951, the Better Homes & Gardens Handyman's Book included "cartoonish" drawings of a husband and wife complet ing projects.

Popular Mechanics published an i llust rated Do- It- Yourself Encyclopedia in 1955. It was writ ten in "simple" language for the ent ire family.
