Our Vision Statement: “Growing Together

as Disciples of Christ.”

My Dear Friends, Congratulations! We did it! For the first time in the history of our parish, we have met our pledge goal for the Annual Pastoral Appeal at the start of October! For the past four years, we met it just after Christmas! Praise God! This means that we have received pledges of over $437,478. Of this pledge, all but approximately $45,000 has been fulfilled. Thank you to all who have pledged and a special thank you to all who are currently fulfilling their pledges or have fulfilled them already. May God bless you! If you have not yet pledged, please do so. Remember, this money is used to fund hundreds of ministries serving those most in need throughout our five county diocese. Every dollar collected above our assessment is returned to the parish so we can serve you better. Thank you for your generosity! As reported in this weeks’ Town Hall meeting, our parish is doing well financially as a result of your generosity and our wise stewardship. We have been able to donate almost a hundred thousand dollars to help those devastated by the hurricanes and other disasters in our country and throughout the world. We also support many local charities which help those most in need. Although we also took a “hit” with hurricane Irma, we count our blessings and are very grateful for your continued and generous support. The results of last month’s parish survey were also very encouraging. It was very affirming to read about your relationship with God and how grateful you are for the gift of our parish family. God has certainly blessed us all! People were grateful for our many activities, the sense of a warm and welcoming community in which to call home, and our rich cultural diversity. Although I wish more felt comfortable inviting others to join you for parish events, it was great to see that more and more are doing so! As for suggestions, there was little consensus for improvement but there were many good ideas. It is clear that we are heading in the right direction. It is also evident that many people are unaware of the ministries we presently offer. The pastoral council, parish staff, and clergy will continue to take your comments and suggestions to prayer. Thank you for caring enough to share! On another note, this week I began a study of Fr. Jean-Pierre de Causade’s classic “Abandonment to Divine Providence.” Copies are available for sale at the Lighthouse kiosk as well as online. Please join me via my Facebook (Bill Swengros). If you don’t have access to Facebook, Gaby can print up copies of the discussion for you (813-961-3023). Tonight (Sunday) we are blessed to welcome Fathers Joy, Plut, Dodong, and Cruf from the Diocese of Maasin at 7pm in the Family Center. These four priests will present “An Evening of Songs.” A love offering will be taken. Last but not least, I’d like to again thank you for the honor of journeying with you in Lord as pastor. May God bless you and your family as we grow together as disciples of Christ!

Infant Baptism ‘I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit’

Children's Corner Page 4

You may bless your pet by saying this beautiful prayer:

Blessing of Animals O God,

you have done all things wisely; in your goodness you have made us in your image

and give us care over all other living things. Reach out with your right hand

and grant that these animals may serve our needs and that your bounty in the resources of this life

may move us to seek more confidently the goal of eternal life. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

The baptism of a child is a special cause for joy and celebration on the part of the Church, the whole community of faith! Baptism is a birth into the Christian community and is in every way as solemn and important as birth itself. It is an event that needs to be prepared for, and it can serve as a reminder to you about your own faith and what it means to you. If you have any questions regarding Infant Baptism, please contact Elizabeth Hays at: 813-961-3023; [email protected].

NOTE: There will not be any dismissal for the Children’s

Liturgy of the Word on Sunday, October 22nd.

Pope Francis: [The parable of the landowner and his vineyard and tenants] helps us to understand what is new and

original in Christianity. It’s not so much the sum of precepts and moral norms, but it is first of all a proposal of love that God, through Jesus, has made and continues to make to humanity. It’s an invitation to enter in this story of love, becoming a vivacious and open vineyard, rich in fruits and hope for all. A closed vineyard can become wild and produce wild grapes. We are called to come out of the vineyard and to put ourselves at the service of brothers that are not with us, to shake one another and encourage each other, to remind ourselves to be the Lord’s vineyard in every environment, including the most distant and uncomfortable. Dear brothers and sisters, we invoke the intercession of Mary Most Holy, to help us to be everywhere, especially in the peripheries of society, the vineyard that the Lord has planted for the good of all, and to bring the new wine of the Lord’s mercy” (Pope

Francis, Angelus, 8 October 2017).

Saints of God: This Wednesday, October 58, is the feast day of St. Luke the evangelist. Recently I met with a candidate for Confirmation who chose St. Luke as his patron saint. When I asked why, this young man related that St. Luke is the author of

both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles (70-85 AD). In this two volume work he presents the life of Jesus as well as the apostolic Church. He was a physician (Col 4:14), probably native of Antioch. He was a gentile convert to Christianity and friend and companion of St. Paul on his second missionary journey (AA chapters 16, 20, 21, 27 & 28). He also later joined Paul in Rome (2 Tim 4:11). Many scholars also believe he knew the Blessed Mother as he alone relates stories he could have only heard from her. He is known for his love for the Holy Spirit, preferential option for the poor, favorable treatment of women, and universal message of salvation. He stresses the need for total dedication to Christ and notes the life of a true Christian is one of great joy. He is also said to have painted one of the earliest known portraits of our Lord! I for my part was impressed with this young man’s knowledge of St. Luke and have little doubt that with St. Luke as his mentor and guide, he will go far!

Page 6 Reflections on Scripture Page 6

I. Isaiah 25:6-10a A Vision of God Triumphant Reflection: In the prior chapter (24) the Prophet had visualized the ultimate triumph of God, and saw Him enthroned on Mount Zion, all His enemies defeated. Our reading describes the “Messianic Banquet”, or the Feast that will occur, with God as the host, and with all people on earth as His guests. This reading is sometimes called an “Apocalyptic” reading, for the vision of this ultimate and hopeful triumph was “revealed” to the Prophet. It also proposes that for those who rely upon God for “salvation,” they will not be disappointed. God is never unfaithful! II. Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20. A Careful Ancient “Thank You.”

Reflection: You will note that several verses have been (for some reason) deleted from this reading; hence, we see here only a hint of the “thanks” that St. Paul sends to his beloved Philippians. In the ancient world, people did not just say “Thank You,” as we do. And we might find it strange that St. Paul initially says that he really didn’t need the money anyway, because he could survive anything! But that was because otherwise, St. Paul would be seen as a “client” of the Philippian church...when, in reality, the church was his client. In the deleted verses, he amplifies the fact that only that church responded to his financial need....he really was grateful! III. Matthew 22:1-14 Wedding Garments Required. Reflection: Connect this reading with the First Reading, for we have another “Messianic Banquet” being referred to. The idea of a king’s inviting his clients (those who looked

to the king for access to power) to a feast, and the client’s refusal for any reason would shock an ancient listener. Thus, the existing clients are discharged, and others of lower classes are substituted. Now, just as today, if one attended a wedding in cutoffs, a tank-top and flip-flops when everyone else was formal, those doing the inviting would be put out. So in the ancient world. But in the Messianic Banquet, those who come without the proper preparation will also be put out. Hence, we see an “Apocalyptic” strain in Matthew, which will intensify up to the last Gospel reading of this Liturgical Year.

Due to copyright restrictions, we cannot print

the Scriptures before the reflections of Mr.

Conroy. The Scripture for today’s liturgy can

Develop an “Attitude of Gratitude” … Living gratefully calls us to be mindful of the grace of God in our lives. We can grow in gratitude by taking some time each day to acknowledge our blessings: The blessing of God’s love: Begin each day by thanking God for the wonder of God’s love; look for signs of this great love in Sacred Scripture, the sacraments, and the ways you are touched by others. The blessing of life and self: Become more conscious of the gift of each day; even when life is difficult, find something to consciously be thankful for; share yourself with others and see how your selflessness touches their lives. The blessing of family and friends: Thank your family and friends for signs of their love and care; remember that the love you experience in others is a reminder of God’s love; intentionally reach out to friends with whom you lose touch or those whom you do not see regularly. The blessing of financial or material resources: Even when we experience loss of our job or underemployment, we can find blessings hidden in the circumstances of our lives. If you have work and are financially secure, be grateful and grow in willingness to share with others; if you are less materially secure, seek the blessing that may be hidden in the midst of your life at this time, perhaps in the concern you experience from others, including those in your parish and local community. The blessing of our St. Paul Parish Community: Being surrounded by others who are growing in gratitude is the ideal way to develop a life of gratefulness yourself; contribute to your parish, by offering your time to an organization or a seasonal service project; become part of an ongoing group such as those for people in various stages of life (mom or dad’s groups, senior gatherings, teen or young adult ministry) or find something to which you have something to contribute. Belonging within our parish community will help us recognize our blessings more deeply than we might imagine. The Stewardship Project

Psalm 139, v13-16 You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my mother’s womb. I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! My very self you know. My bones are not hidden from you, When I was being made in secret, fashioned in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw me unformed; in your book all are written down; my days were shaped, before one came to be.

Thank you for your generosity! ~ SVdP

Faith in Action: God really does provide for those who are grateful and generous. This is very difficult for people that don’t live a stewardship

lifestyle to believe. People are skeptical and say it’s just coincidence. If you are skeptical, try living a stewardship lifestyle for just one month – be generous with your gifts of time, talent and treasure and see how God provides for your needs. \

Living Faith: Many of those who were invited to the wedding feast in today’s Gospel refused to attend. Of those guests who did attend, one failed to dress in his best clothes. Who are you in the story? One who refuses to attend, doesn’t give God his best or attends AND gives God his best? What does it mean to give God your best? Great question to discuss on the way home from Church!
