ACEPTEN DÓCILMENTE LA PALABRA QUE HA SIDO SEMBRADA EN USTEDES Y ES CAPAZ DE SALVARLOS. — SANTIAGO 1:21B

Today’s readings provide some interesting parallels and contrasts. The first reading is an account of Moses who, having delivered the Law to the Israelites, admonishes them to “observe them [its statutes] carefully.” The author of the Letter of James likewise instructs fellow Christians to “welcome the word” they have received, that they may become “doers of the words and not hearers only.” The psalmist praises “whoever walks blamelessly and does justice” by listing a few examples of what is required for that—descriptions that apply equally to both Jewish and Christian traditions. On the other hand, when the scribes and Pharisees point out that the disciples have not properly washed their hands before eating (which is, as Mark explains, the usual Jewish practice) Jesus scolds them sharply for being too focused on hu-man rules—even ritual ones—instead of God’s laws. MOSAIC LAW: WHAT GOD WANTS OF THE PEOPLE Moses gives the Israelites their Law, which provided the structure for daily life. As recorded in the Bible, over half of the Law is about rituals for worship and sacrifice. A related concept is the concept of a person’s ritual purity (or cleanliness), which is required for participation in both social and religious activities, since persons become unclean by physical contact with other unclean persons, animals, or objects. Other ways a person becomes unclean include the presence of skin lesions, bleeding, or a bodily discharge. Unclean persons are required to purify themselves to be again considered clean. Despite the Law’s complexity, observant Jews considered it a privilege, not a burden, to observe its precepts, and they continue to do so today. ON THE OTHER HAND . . . The scribes and Pharisees are focusing on the disciples’ failure to properly wash their hands prior to eating. But nowhere in the biblical texts of the Law are there regulations regarding the washing of hands before or after meals. These regulations, as described by Mark, are merely practices like those that arise in all societies; if they continue long enough, they can seem like sacred duties, sanctified as “the traditions of their elders.” This distinction is the source of the tension in these three readings. Moses and James both tell their people that they are recipients of a divine gift that requires special care, while Jesus is practically livid when the scribes and Pharisees react harshly to the disciples’ failure to wash their hands according to Jewish practices. Such a distinction between divine law and human practices is valuable for our own lives. When we hear of another’s misdeeds, we should evaluate the seriousness of the offense before forming our own impression. Is this truly a serious moral matter? Or something less weighty? Carefully discerning the seriousness of such matters might reveal that things are not as grave as they first appear. Such care is an exercise in Christian charity, one way of acting on the word we have received as members of the Body of Christ. Las lecturas de hoy ofrecen algunos paralelos y contrastes interesantes. La primera lectura es un relato de Moisés que, tras entregar la Ley a los israelitas, los exhorta a “observarlos (sus estatutos) cuidadosamente”. El autor de la carta de Santiago también instruye a los cristianos a “aceptar la palabra” que han recibido, para que ellos “pongan en prácticas esa palabra y no se limiten a escucharla”. El salmista alaba a “quien camina inocentemente y hace justicia” enumerando algunos ejemplos de lo que se requiere para ellos, descripciones que se emplean por igual a las tradiciones judía y cristiana. Por otra parte, cuando los escribas y fariseos señalan que los discípulos no se han lavado las manos antes de comer (que es, como explica Marcos, la práctica judía habitual), Jesús les regaña duramente por estar demasiado centrados en las normas humanas -incluso rituales- en lugar de las leyes de Dios. LA LEY MOSAICA: LO QUE DIOS QUIERE DEL PUEBLO Moisés da a los israelitas su Ley, que proporciona la organización para la vida diaria. Tal y como está registrado en la Biblia, más de la mitad de la Ley trata sobre los rituales de adoración y sacrificio. Un concepto relacionado es el que trata de la pureza ritual (o limpieza) de una persona, que se requiere para participar en actividades tanto sociales como religiosas, ya que las personas se vuelven impuras por el contacto físico con otras personas, animales y objetos impuros. Otras formas en las que una persona se vuelve impura incluyen que existan lesiones en la piel, hemorragias o secreciones corporales. Las personas impuras deben purificarse para volver a ser consideradas limpias. A pesar de la complejidad de la Ley, los judíos observantes consideraban un privilegio, pero no una carga, observar sus preceptos, y siguen haciéndolo en la actualidad. POR OTRO LADO Los escribas y fariseos se centran en el hecho de que los discípulos no se lavaron correctamente las manos antes de comer. Pero en ninguna parte de los textos bíblicos de la Ley hay regulaciones sobre el lavado de manos antes o después de las comidas. Esas regulaciones, tal como las describe Marcos, son simplemente prácticas como las que surgen en todas las sociedades; si se prolongan lo suficiente, pueden parecer deberes sagrados, santificados como “las tradiciones de sus mayores”. DOERS OF THE WORD The second reading for today begins a five-week series of selections from James, a letter that is classified among the so-called “catholic” (or universal) epistles because they are addressed to a general audience rather than to one particular community. Today’s text offers important advice for Christians of every generation. God is first cited as the author of all gifts, and in particular, reference is made to the gift of baptism by which we have been made the “first fruits” of the new creation. What follows is advice based on a very Jewish understanding of the “word” as an active force, operative in the world. We are reminded that unless we, too, become “doers” of the word, our claim to faith is empty. Today and in subsequent weeks the author reminds us that it is equally important to do the “works” of love, for example, by caring for the “orphans and widows in their affliction.” Copyright © J. S. PRACTIQUEN LA PALABRA La segunda lectura de hoy comienza una serie de cinco semanas de selecciones de la Carta de Santiago que se clasifica entre las epístolas llamadas “católicas” (o universales) porque están dirigidas a un público general y no a una comunidad en particular. El texto de hoy ofrece consejos importantes para los cristianos de todas las generaciones. Dios es citado por primera vez como autor de todos los dones, y en particular, se hace referencia al don del bautismo, por el que somos las “primicias” de la nueva creación. Lo que sigue es un consejo basado en un entendimiento muy judío de la “palabra” como una fuerza activa, operativa en el mundo. Se nos recuerda que a menos que nosotros también nos convirtamos en “practicantes” de la palabra, nuestra profesión de fe no vale nada. Hoy y en las próximas semanas el autor nos recuerda que es igualmente importante que hacer las “obras” del amor, por ejemplo, cuidar de los “huérfanos y las viudas en sus tribulaciones”.
