TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PASTORS CORNER From time to time I hear in the confessional, "I missed Mass on Sunday," but then I hear the reasons: "I was sick..." or "I had to take care of my child who was sick…" or "We were traveling....." or "Our son's soccer game was scheduled at the time we usually go to Mass." The difference between human need and better scheduling seems fairly obvious to me, but the Sunday obligation is engrained, even if not always observed. However, many people have found a good solutionto the problem of missing Mass on Sunday. The establishment of Saturday evening Vigil Mass has made weekend observance more convenient, but there is a matter of the heart. If going to Mass is seen more as a chore to be done and gotten out of the way so the rest of the weekend can be enjoyed, I think you are missing the point in your relationship with God! What can be more important on Sunday morning than your datewith the Lord? I think that something has gotten lost in translation during the last few years. Now many Catholics take for granted what was supposed to be only an exception. What I mean is that Saturday Mass in the evening is only for those who cannot participate in the Mass on Sunday morning because of very serious reasons: illness, work, travelling, or other important family engagements that cannot be postponed at that time, and those things should only happen from time to time, never on a regular basis. So, be honest with yourself: Are you bewildered, confused, surprised or shocked while reading this message? To be honest with you, I am always surprised to see so many of you in the church on Saturday. Fr. TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

PASTOR’S CORNER

From time to time I hear in the confessional, "I missed Mass on Sunday," but then I hear the reasons: "I was

sick..." or "I had to take care of my child who was sick…" or "We were traveling....." or "Our son's soccer game

was scheduled at the time we usually go to Mass." The difference between human need and better scheduling

seems fairly obvious to me, but the Sunday obligation is engrained, even if not always observed. However,

many people have found a good “solution” to the problem of missing Mass on Sunday. The establishment of

Saturday evening Vigil Mass has made weekend observance more convenient, but there is a matter of the

heart. If going to Mass is seen more as a chore to be done and gotten out of the way so the rest of the weekend

can be enjoyed, I think you are missing the point in your relationship with God! What can be more important on

Sunday morning than your “date” with the Lord?

I think that something has gotten lost in translation during the last few years. Now many Catholics take for

granted what was supposed to be only an exception. What I mean is that Saturday Mass in the evening is

only for those who cannot participate in the Mass on Sunday morning because of very serious reasons:

illness, work, travelling, or other important family engagements that cannot be postponed at that time,

and those things should only happen from time to time, never on a regular basis.

So, be honest with yourself: Are you bewildered, confused, surprised or shocked while reading this message?

To be honest with you, I am always surprised to see so many of you in the church on Saturday.

Fr. Slawek
