Jubilee Year of Mercy “If anyone comes to me without hating . . . father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and even his [or her] own life” (Luke 14:26). Hating? Can anyone imagine a less appropriate Gospel for the Jubilee Year of Mercy? But scholars call this Semitic hyperbole. Jesus exaggerates to jolt us into confronting life-changing challenges. Faced with conflicting loyalties, disciples must reorder priorities, even relationships, to give Jesus and the gospel’s demands first place. Today’s second reading presents a real-life example. Paul challenges his wealthy convert, Philemon, to welcome back Philemon’s runaway slave, Onesimus, whom Paul has baptized in prison. Not only with unconditional forgiveness but with a counter-cultural, world-shattering change of status—as an equal. No, even more—a beloved brother in Christ. What in my life does the Jubilee Year of Mercy challenge me to “hate”—meaning re-form, redo, even utterly revamp—so I can give everyone, no conditions, no exceptions, shockingly Christ-like love? —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. ANNOUNCEMENTS

St. Joseph the Worker $8,875 is the weekly amount needed in order to properly sustain, operate and improve our historic parish church of St. Joseph the Worker. Please prayerfully consider your Sunday gift offerings, as it is your personal sacrifice that is being presented to God. Last Sunday, August 28th, we received 32% of our weekly goal for the support of our parish church: 8:00am Mass: $1,105.93 9:30am Mass: $1,095.82 11:00am Spanish Mass: $636.68 ======================== Total $2,838.43 “Some are consumed with avarice all the day, but the just give unsparingly” (Proverbs 21:26)

• Do I withhold from giving back to God what is rightly due God? • Is my Sunday Finan-cial offering, which is brought forth to the Altar

Some very important questions we should all be asking ourselves at St. Joseph the Worker

parish:

being presented to God as “my sacrificial gift” something that is truly sacrificial and thus pleasing to God? Or am I offering God scraps or my leftovers? • Is not my God and the support of my Catholic parish church where people are being spiritually fed, nourished, renewed, reconciled and being healed by God not worthy of 2 hours of my 40 hours worth of wages? • Is 2 hours out of 40 hours or 5% of my weekly in-come really just too much to give back to God in gratitude for all the blessings I receive, especially when everything we receive from God is a gift in itself? Please seriously and prayerfully reconsider your Sunday offerings, as it is your personal sacrifice that is being presented to God for the support and help of His Church. St. Joseph, pray for us.

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happi-ness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought af-ter, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this of you, Lord Jesus, through the inter-cession of Mary, Mother of Mercy; you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
