• Scottish Sports Futures (SSF) is a charity based in Glasgow.

• SSF delivers “Education through Sport” programmes to at risk youth across Scotland.

Context/Issues

• Glasgow has more gangs than London which is 15 times the size• Every year in Scotland 133 young men aged between 10 & 29

are killed as a result of violence• You are twice as likely to be murdered in the West of Scotland

as you are in London or New York• 33% of young people in Scotland are overweight or obese• 29% of 15 year olds are regular smokers• Scotland has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in

Western Europe

Context/Issues

• Alcohol related death rates in Scotland have more than doubled in the last fifteen years

• In the last decade, alcohol related attendances at Scottish hospitals have increased by almost 50%

• 600 children under 16 are admitted to hospital every year because of alcohol. • “Twice as many calls are made to childline by young people concerned about their

parents’ harmful drinking in Scotland than the rest of the UK.”• Fifteen of the twenty local areas in the UK with the highest male alcohol-related

death rates ….are in Scotland.” • People in Scotland drank 25% more alcohol per head of population than

individuals in England and Wales.• 44% of men and 34% of women in Scotland exceed recommended daily limits.• Alcohol misuse costs Scotland around £3.56 billion per year - £900 for every

taxpayer.• The number of 13 year olds drinking in the past week has doubled since 1990.
