New technologies in language teaching and learning

Two good practices

To what extent do new technologies improve language teaching and

learning?

) Learning Basque on your own: BOGA Online platform

) Using Turning Point in language classes

BOGA Online platform

What is BOGA?

• BOGA is a Basque language program (based on Moodle) to help students learn the language through the internet on their own. BOGA is one of the tools created by the Basque Government for the learning of Euskara.

Where is BOGA located?

STRENGTHS• Self-learning.• Direct feedback and absolute

control of the students work.• Based on ZPD [Zone of proximal

development] (Vygotsky, 1987).

WEAKNESSES• No oral exercises.• Hard technical scaffolding (Lai

and Law, 2006).• No problem based learning nor

communicative approach.

OPPORTUNITIES• Suitable as a parallel tool.• Web 2.0 combinations:

+ Skype for oral skills (mintzapraktika 2.0)+ firefox add-ons for databases (euskalbar)+ Second life for group tasks

THREATSConstant up-dating needed.Not suitable for phones/pads (Web 3.0).

Using TURNING POINT in language classes.

• What is Turning Point?

Who said this sentence?“My Spanish is improving: I can say, ‘Dónde

Gucci?‘ and ‘Tienes Bentley´?”

1. George Bush

2. Victoria Beckham

3. One of my students

4. Sarah Ferguson

5. I don’t know

How can I get it?

• Software:

You can download it from the internet.

• Hardware:

Clickers and USB receiver dongles. You can hire them at LRAT.

Tips

• Consider inclusion of “I don’t know” answer to minimise random voting.

• Ensure every question has a clearly identifiable purpose.

• Use images to enhance the questions.

• Integrate the presentation into your lesson plan.

• Use it for review.

• Always prepare a Plan B.

Which is the best movie of all times?

1. Citizen Kane.

2. Casablanca.

3. Gone with the wind.

4. Hannah Montana, the movie.

STRENGTHS•Nice ice-breaker.•Excellent in lower levels. •Good practice for grammar exam (multiple choice). •Good for initiating class discussions.

WEAKNESSES•May be discouraging if used for revision. •Not suitable for small groups.•May be a problem if we have a student with special needs.

OPPORTUNITIES•Embedding videos for listening comprehension.•“Not anonymous”.•Improving it with a smallkeyboard that allow the student to give short answers.

THREATS•Problems with new technologies.•Once the novelty is gone, it could be not that encouraging.
