Two-stage cooling in one packageThe typical confi guration for low temperature refrigeration is a separate booster and second stage compressor, but this is costly and requires extra fl oor space in the processing plant. Single-stage compressors are not an option because of high compression ratios and low energy effi ciency when used with air-cooled condensers.

Vilter has developed a line of two-stage compressor units in a compact package. The two-stage VMC™ (Vilter Multi-Cylin-der) compressor unit costs almost 50% less than two sepa-rate compressors and intercooler, and takes up only half the fl oor space.

Two-stage VMC compressor units are available in 6- and 12-cylinder sizes for either direct-connected or V-belt drive and for speeds up to 1200 RPM. The units can be supplied for operation with R-717 and R-22 refrigerants using either the VMC 450XL or 440 models. Refer to the tables for dimensions and capacity range.

The two-stage VMC is supplied standard with:

• Intercooler

• Main stop valves

• Discharge stop/check valve

• High and low pressure gauges

• Built-in suction valve and strainer

• Safety relief valve

• Differential oil pressure failure switch

• Panel with mounted pressure controls

• Thermal valve with solenoid valve and strainer

Simplifi ed operation and lower costsThe two-stage 6-cylinder VMC compressor unit has, in the frame, internal partitions in the suction and discharge chambers to separate the booster and high stage cylinders. The outer two banks (side banks) are the booster cylinders and the center bank is the high stage cylinder.

In the 12-cylinder unit, 8 cylinders - the center bank and one outside bank - are booster cylinders, while the other side bank is 4 high stage cylinders.

The suction gas from the evaporator enters the compressor through the booster suction connection and is compressed to the intermediate pressure before entering the intercooler or desuperheater. Gas from the intercooler/desuperheater passes into the high stage cylinder where it is compressed to discharge conditions and then directed to the condenser.

The intercooler contains a shell and tube vessel for liquid subcooling. This 6” diameter vessel is centered in an 8” diameter tank type vessel with desuperheating taking place in the annular space between the two shells. The desuper-heater vessel is a tank type vessel with a fi n coil that is fabricated with baffl es.

The two-stage VMC is ideal for a variety of applications since it is a self-contained unit with simplifi ed automatic control. It can also be built as a Vilter two-stage recip-pack unit with an oil separator and microprocessor control mounted to the compressor unit (see photo below).

Engineering specifi cations(For the aid of architects and engineers)

The contractor shall furnish and install where shown on the plans and specifi cations a Vilter 450XL (or 440) reciprocating two-stage compressor unit.

Compressor

The 6-cylinder (12-cylinder) two-stage compressor frame shall be constructed from a basic Vilter VMC frame employing standard VMC components. Each frame to be made from a one-piece, fi ne grained, cast iron casting incorporating the suction and discharge manifolds and bearing supports. In addition, each frame contains internal partitions in the suction and discharge chambers to separate the high stage cylinder bank from the booster banks.

Compressor shall be a Vilter 450XL (or 440) reciprocating compressor model with a 2-year warranty and in accordance with the internal component specifi cations noted in the Vilter 450XL (or 440) sales bulletin.

Compressor shall come complete with structural steel base, and be drive by a ____HP, ___RPM, ___volt, ___phase ___cycle motor with direct coupling and coupling guard, or V-belt drive with fl ywheel

belts and motor sheave for ___RPM. Compressor shall have a capacity of not less than ___tons when operating at ___F (psig) suction temperature (pressure) and ___psig (F) condensing pressure (temperature).

Intercooler

The intercooler used shall be constructed of an 8” diameter outer shell and an inner shell 6” in diameter. Steel tubing 3/8” O.D. shall be used in the inner shell. The vessel shall be designed in accordance with the ASME code and carry a code stamp. The intercooler shall be mounted rigidly above the compressor unit allowing suffi cient clearance for servicing operations.

Desuperheater

Desuperheaters are available for use in place of intercoolers. The desuperheater shall be a 6” diameter tank type vessel that surrounds a 4” square fi n coil assembly that uses four 3/4” O.D. prime surface tubes. The fi n coil is fabricated with baffl es that direct the gas fl ow through the shell. The vessel shall be designed in accordance with the ASME code and carry a code stamp.
