Longtermenginereliabilitycanonlybeachievedwhentheappropriatecoolantinhibitorsystemisused.

Coolanttechnologyhaskeptpacewithprogressinenginedesign.Enginemanufacturersuselightermaterialsbutachievehigherpoweroutput.Advancesinmetallurgyhaveaccentuatedtheneedforacoolantwiththeappropriatechemicalcomposition.

Coolantswidelyuseduptothe1980’sinautomotiveenginesand2000’sinheavydieselenginesareclassifiedasConventionalCoolants.Theyreliedonadditivesthatwereconsumedandthecoolanttypicallyneededreplacingannually.HeavyDieselenginesrequiredSupplementaryCoolantAdditives(SCA)onaregularbasis.

OrganicAcidTechnology(OAT)describesarangeofinhibitorsbasedonafamilyofcarboxylateacidsandtheirsalts.OATtypeinhibitorsprovidecorrosionprotectionbyformingprotectivelayersonmetalsusedinthecoolingsystem.BecauseOATinhibitorssimplyformaprotectivelayertheydonotgetusedupandofferlong-lifeprotectionbetween3-5years.

HybridOrganicAcidTechnology(HOAT)wasbornfromtheneedformoresupplementstotargetproblemcorrosionareas.HOATformulationsmaycontaininorganicadditivessuchasnitritesandsilicates.Ultimately,theengineOEMwillspecifytheadditivemixthatisbestfortheirequipment.

Corrosioninhibitorperformanceandstabilitymaybeaffectedifcoolantsaremixed.CertainhybridcoolantsarefullycompatiblewithOATandConventionalcoolants.Donotmixcoolantsofunknownchemistry.Somecoolantscannotbemixed.

Manycoolantscontainsilicatestoprotectwaterpumpimpellersbutsilicatesareunstableandreadilyformgelsthatplugacoolingsystem.Thereforecoolantsshouldnotbemixedunlessspecificallydesignedformulti-productapplication.

Inhibitorlevelsandglycolconcentratecanbemeasuredusingarefractometerorwithteststrips.
