Two constables aged 26 and28, and a warrant officer (48)were arrested and due to ap-pear in court on Monday.

Investigations into thecrimes are still continuing.

Transport forum encouraged. From page 1.

McMahon also pointed out that many operatorssimilar to those in the forum were experiencingproblems dealing with schools that did not get in-volved with these private transport businesses, especially in respect to obtaining permits butthey were busy streamlining these requirements.

“We have found that many principals do notwant to commit to requirements that are neededfor them to sign in order for operators to get theseoperating permission because it still puts respon-sibility in their hands.

“This is being reviewed to be much simpler butwithout compromising the safety of those learn-ers.”

Carlisle also encouraged the activities of the fo-rum and ensured them that his door was open tohelp them improve their services.

“Education is important in all communities, and getting children to their schools safely is a

priority. As a forum you must keep on takingyour ideas forward to involve all stakeholders.

“There is a need for co-operative thinking inyour activities in order to obtain better deals foryour members in the financial and servicingfields for their vehicles, and maintain the part-nerships with the education and transport de-partments so that you are always operating safelyand within the law.”

Hoffmeester concluded by adding that all themembers of the forum were very motivated by themeeting and hopes that more operators wouldjoin them to ensure safety for scholars.

. The forum will be celebrating their first anni-versary with a snack dance at the MontevideoCommunity Hall on Friday from 19:00.

Fire destroys train carriageFire destroys train carriageJESSICA BOTES

The first class carriage of a Cape Town-bound train was recently destroyed andtwo adjacent carriages damaged when afire started in the carriage as the trainleft the Kuils River Station.

The fire started just after 11:00 on Thurs-day morning and investigations are underway to confirm the circumstances of the inci-dent. It is suspected that the fire was set de-liberately.

Metrorail regional manager, LindeloMatya, said the destruction of the three car-riages brings the total number lost to fire inthe last six months to eight. The cost of thedamage will only be confirmed post-assess-ment but it is estimated to run into severalmillion.

According to Eldon Pieterse, a passengeron the train, they had no idea the train wason fire. “When the train stopped we juststayed in the carriage,” said Pieterse, “it wasonly when a passenger from the burning car-riage came to warn us that we got off thetrain.”

“In case of fire, a train is required to stopas soon as the fire is detected,” said Matya.“The traindriver andguardhave specific du-ties to fulfil in compliance with the emergen-cy plan. The plan takes account of the 3 000volt overhead high tension electricity andother operational logistics endemic to therail environment.”

The train stopped just after leaving the sta-tion with about five coaches in the section, the remainder of the train was still at the

platform. “Logic dictated that commutersclosest to the source of the fire would be at-tended to first,” said Matya.

No one was injured in the fire and emer-gency services were on site to assist.

“We had to wait over two hours for the bus-es to arrive,” said Pieterse. “I go to collegeand I have now missed all my classes. Theydid not even give me a letter to say that thetrains were being delayed so now I will bemarked absent from class.”

“When trains are delayed, Metrorail dis-patches buses automatically, but experience

has shown that this process can take awhile,” said Matya. “In some instances thetrain service has been restored before thebuses arrive”.

Metrorail asks that witnesses with any in-formation that may assist the police in ap-prehending the perpetrators come forward.“A reward of up to R25 000 may be paid forinformation leading to a successful convic-tion,” said Matya.

Reports may be sent to the SAPS CrimeLine on 08600 10111 or Crime tip-offs SMS32211.

Metrorail has plan for vandalismMetrorail is tackling vandals with aniron fist after various incidents havecrippled its rail services in recentmonths.

Metrorail systems, rail assets and rollingstock have been vandalised and sabotagedleading to 73 train cancellations and 2 503train delays since November 2011.

Lindelo Matya, regional manager of theWestern Cape, said the region’s securityplan will be beefed up significantly to stopvandals in their tracks. “We will be install-ing closed circuit television cameras whichwill be monitored and supported by strategi-

cally placed tactical response units,” saidMatya.

The cameras will integrate with other sur-veillance cameras in nearby areas.

The region’s human resource capacity willalso be beefed up by the appointment of 100ex-SANDF members. The rail system is cur-rently safeguarded by about 100 railway po-lice, 130 permanent Metrorail ProtectionServices officials and900 contracted securityofficers working in two or more shifts.

“While our efforts to repair and bringtrains back into service in the last sixmonths has materialised, resulting in all re-quired trains for scheduled services being

available, this has been severely hamperedby these cowardly acts of vandalism,” saidMatya.

To minimise delays for commuters Metro-rail has re-introduced special express busservices.

“Over recent months we have seen traincommuters being unfairly inconveniencedby criminal acts of vandalism. As a ‘caringcity’ and a responsible partner in the publictransport sector, we must have a plan inplace so that we can come to their assist-ance,” said Councillor Brett Herron, thecity’s mayoral committee member for trans-port, roads and stormwater.

Boys take a step aheadGARY VAN DYK

Four young men from Bonteheu-wel want to make melodies a ma-jor part of their lives.

Since 2010 a group of friends begansinging at their church functions, which got them invitations to sing atother churches and family func-tions, and before they knew it theywere in demand in the community, but now they want to take it a stepfurther.

Joshua van der Merwe (16) is oneof the founding members of thegroup that simply call themselvesBoys From Bonteheuwel.

“We did not have a name when westarted so when people introducedus they just called us that, so thename has stuck,” he explains.

“The group started with just threeof us, with Caleb van der Rheede (17)

and Jason Ockhuizen (13), but wegrew to five members with MikaelPedro (21) and Rudy Pedro (24) join-ing us.

“We have become really seriousabout our music and we perform gos-pel music in the vocal harmonystyle, but we feel that the time hascome for us to improve on what wedo.

“Our first aim is to get our ownequipment for our performances be-cause sometimes we get to a venueand the equipment is not workingproperly, or our backing trackswon’t play, and it spoils it for the au-dience.

“Another important objective isthat we want to improve our singingso we are looking for somebody tohelp us with our music, and improv-ing our voices,” he said.

Help may be on hand for the groupbecause Lorraine Ockhuizen, well-

known for her reading programmesin the area, has taken them underher wing to help them achieve theirgoals.

She recently hosted a High Tea toraise funds for the group and saidthat she wanted to support theseyoung men who wanted to becomepositive role models in their commu-nities.

“They already have a God-giventalent and they still want to improveon that talent,” she said.

“I believe that they have what ittakes to make it to the top and theirmessage will reach many younghearts out there. If there is any per-son out there who can help and en-courage these young men to aspireto live their dream any donation incash, or in the form of equipmentwill be appreciated.” For further in-formation contact Lorraine on 021694 5098 or 083 343 2128.

Mbeki togive OmarlectureYou can get the inside information onpeacemaking and being the president atUWC tomorrow.

Former President Thabo Mbeki will de-liver a lecture on“Reflections onpeacemak-ing, state sovereignty and democratic gov-ernance in Africa” at the 8th Annual DullahOmar Memorial Lecture at the university.

The lecture is hosted by the CommunityLaw Centre and the Faculty of Law at theUniversity of the Western Cape.

The Dullah Omar Memorial Lecture Se-ries celebrates the memory of the man whoworked tirelessly towards, and achieved somuch, in realising the goals of humanrights and democracy.

Omar believed that law should serve thecommunity and give effect to human rightsand democracy. He put that belief into prac-tise as a lawyer because most of his clientswere people who had been victimised byapartheid laws. He represented numerouspolitical prisoners and also acted as legalcounsel for tradeunions, civic andreligiousorganisations.

At the height of repression during theState of Emergency, he played a key role, within the flagship civic organisation fight-ing against apartheid, the United Demo-craticFront.With thenormalisationof poli-tics in 1990 he became the chairperson ofthe African National Congress in the West-ern Cape.

With the unbanning of the liberationmovements in 1990, a vision for the new le-gal order based on justice, human rightsand democracy was required. Omar an-swered to this call.

He brought this vision and intellect to theUniversity of the Western Cape and the LawFaculty when in 1990 he became the direc-tor of the Community Law Centre. Omarwas the inspiration behind the Centre andworked tirelessly to establish it as a centreof research and advocacy on human rightsand democracy.

Under his directorship the Centre be-came a major contributor to policy formula-tion for the new constitutional order, focus-ing on the structure of the state, the elector-al system, gender issues, children’s rights, policing, and the transformation of the judi-ciary.

As a former friend and colleague, formerPresident Mbeki will also reflect on hismemories of the late Advocate DullahOmar.

The lecture will start at 18:00 and takesplace in the Main Hall.

For information please call 021 959 2625.You can also follow the lecture live on Ra-

dio 2000 for views, interviews and reviews.

“Mighty Men was ’n wonderlike geesteli-ke inspuiting, ja, maar daar is tog gevinddat talle daarna weer in ou weë verval.”

All to fight for in the second halfTHOMAS CAROLUS

Ajax Cape Town wants to stay ontheir winning ways for the se-cond half of the league.

The local side will look to pick upin the second half of the Absa Pre-mier League season where they leftoff when they host Platinum Starsat 19:30 tonight at the Cape TownStadium.

Ajax ended off 2011’s competitiveaction in style, picking up threesuccessive wins, including a thril-ling 4-3 victory over relegation-threatened Black Leopards, to pushthemselves up to seventh place onthe league table, just seven pointsadrift of leaders Mamelodi Sun-downs.

The Urban Warriors have builtup such a head of steam that coachMaarten Stekelenburg will nodoubt have been disappointed that

it ended with the lengthy festive se-ason and Africa Cup of Nations in-duced break, but it’s the same pro-blem faced by all PSL clubs at pre-sent.

Platinum Stars, Ajax’s opponentsthis evening, were probably thank-ful of the break, as it would have gi-ven them time to regroup and reor-ganise after a difficult first half ofthe season.

The Rustenburg-based side pic-ked up just 13 points from their 15matches and find themselves downin 13th place on the log, just threepoints above the danger zone.

Their main problem has been achronic inability to pick up pointsaway from home; in eight leaguematches on the road. Dikwena haverecorded one draw and suffered se-ven losses.

Their coach Owen da Gama clear-ly needs to get his side over theirtravel sickness if they are to rise up

the table.Engen Santos will look to pick up

three points when their premier-ship campaign resumes with amatch against Moroka Swallows to-night at Dobsonville Stadium.

Moroka Swallows played to a 2-alldraw at home to Maritzburg Unitedin their last match before the mid-season break.

The Soweto side been solid at ho-me so far this season, with fourwins, three draws and just one lossfrom eight matches. The Birds areplaced fourth on the premiershiptable with 26 points from 15 mat-ches.

Santos also played to a 2-all drawaway to Jomo Cosmos in their lastmatch before the mid-season break. The People’s Team have struggledaway from home this season, pic-king up just one win from theireight matches on the road. Santosare placed 14th on the Premiership

table with 12 points from 15 mat-ches.

SuperSport United and Free StateStars will both be targeting threepoints when they meet for a leaguematch at the Lucas Moripe Stadiumtonight.

SuperSport United suffered a 1-0home defeat to Bloemfontein Celticin their last league match before themid-season break. The Pretoriateam have picked up six wins andsuffered two losses from their eighthome matches so far this season.Matsatsantsa are placed second onthe table with 28 points from 15 mat-ches.

Free State Stars went down 2-0 athome to Mamelodi Sundowns intheir last league match before themid-season break.

Stars have been erratic awayfrom home this season, with threewins and four losses from sevenmatches. Ea Lla Koto are placed

sixth on the Premiership table with24 points from 15 matches.

Orlando Pirates will look to beginthe second half of the Premiershipseason on a good footing when theyhost Black Leopards at Orlando Sta-dium tonight.

Orlando Pirates claimed a 2-0 winat home to Golden Arrows in thelast match before the mid-seasonbreak. The Soweto side are unbea-ten at home this season with fivewins and three draws from eightmatches. The Buccaneers are pla-ced fifth on the Premiership logwith 24 points from 15 matches.

Black Leopards suffered a heart-breaking 4-3 defeat to Ajax CapeTown in their last match before themid-season break. The Limpopo si-de has recorded just one away victo-ry from eight matches on the roadthis season. Lidoda Duvha are pla-ced 15th on the Premiership tablewith 10 points from 15 matches.

‘Fight club’ league growingANDRÉ BAKKES AND CHILTON

MELLEM

Rule number one: don’t talkabout Fight Club!

Rule number two: don’t talk aboutFight Club!

The Cape Town Fight Leaguebears similarities with the Holly-wood movie in the sense that “any-thing goes” but fortunately it ismuch more professional.

When the sport first began ruleswere minimal, but concern from anumber of parties resulted in strict-er rules being implemented, so eventhe “anything goes” slogan is push-ing the limits.

The first Cape Fight League wasrecently held in front of 1 600 keenfans at the Bellville Velodrome.

Mixed Martial Arts, more com-monly referred to as MMA, is a com-bat sport which sees the use of a mix-ture of martial arts techniques.

Its origins can apparently be

traced as far back as 648BC to theGreek Olympic Games.

It is also one of the fastest growingsports in the world.

On Saturday, 4 February, the audi-ence was able to see for themselveswhat the difference is between a rearnaked choke and a triangle choke.

They looked on through a cage asfirst the dancers got the show on theroad, then local favourite FerdinandRabie introduced the fighters and fi-nally the chokes, kicks and punchescommenced.

Renshaw Boltman, a fighter him-self, was just a face in the crowd thatnight, but he says that fighting hasgiven him discipline and control.

Another audience member, CarynStyles, says there is definitely a de-mand for MMA.

“I love the excitement and thebuzz!” she exclaims.

Cape Fighting League co-founder,Anthony Kettle, agrees with Styles.

“There is definitely a big demand.Gary Barrett and I are trying to cre-

ate a platform for fighters, just likethey have in Durban and Johannes-burg,” he explains before elaborat-ing, “One can be an amateur or a pro-fessional, but you must get into agym and first learn things such asthe stand art, ground art and takedowns.”

A fighting enthusiast from Bull-dogs Moitai Gym, Marisa Roman, said that she was very excited for theup coming fights. “I’ve been trainingto fight for nine months now so it’sgreat to see what it’s all about. Oncethe bug bites, it’s addictive,” shesaid.

Nobel De Castrol said: “ I am excit-ed to see some good fights tonight, itshould be interesting. I am sure it’sgoing to be good but most of all I amlooking forward to see some peoplego down.” And down they went!

Kettle says they have alreadymade preliminary plans for the nextevent on 10 May.

Top Softball SA man suspendedMARK WARD

The suspension of Noore Nacero-dien by Softball South Africa hassent shockwaves through thesport. Nacerodien’s suspensioncomes just weeks after he waslauded for the successful stagingof the Junior Women’s WorldChampionship in December.

Nacerodien headed the Local Or-ganising Committee for the pres-tige event, which took place in CapeTown from the Tuesday 6 to Friday17 December at the Turfhall ParkStadium in Crawford.

Nacerodien said the action fromthe sports controlling body is a mys-tery to him and that he was notifiedvia a text message.

According to the message his sus-pension is due to his failure topresent a comprehensive report re-lating to the World Championship.

He is also banned from all formsof the sport and was not allowed tocomplete his umpiring duties at the

weekend.“The suspension comes as a

shock to me. I did submit a report,”said Nacerodien.

“Unfortunately I could not attendthe 4 February meeting, but threedelegates from the Western Prov-ince, who served with me on theLOC were given the report for dis-cussion at the meeting.

“I am seeking legal advice andcannot speak too much. The onlything I wish to add is, why the ban-ning order? Is it not the responsibil-ity of the organisation to first sum-mons a member? Normal proce-dures then dictate that if the personin question fails to attend that meet-ing then should drastic action likethis follow? I was not afforded thatopportunity.

“The banning has cast a shadowover me and has created suspicion.I need to clear my name, and the na-tional body has some explaining todo.”
