Cape Town International Airport is on amission to take education to new highs ateight schools in the Peninsula.

This year, eight schools in the airport’s vi-cinity benefited from a R192 200 donationwith each school receiving an interactivewhiteboard which can be used to access theinternet while teaching.

In the past three years, 21 schools have be-nefited with boards worth over half a milli-on rand.

The airport worked closely with the Wes-tern Cape Education Foundation who alsoprovided the criteria for selecting theschools.

One of the criteria was the matric pass ra-te for 2013 and the schools are Ravensmead

High School with a 97% pass rate, Good-wood College (96.4% pass rate), ExcelsiorHigh in Belhar (96% rate), Hindle High inDelft (95.8% pass rate), Elsies River High(94.2% pass rate), Perseverance High in Bel-har (87% pass rate), Inkwekwezi High in DuNoon (84.5% pass rate) and Voorbrug Highin Delft (80% pass rate)

its school up-liftment project “ImprovingEducation through Interactive Technolo-gy”.

munities around the airport.“Three of the schools were selected not

only for their pass rate but because they hada significant pass rate increase in the 2013matric results.

“As recognition, the airport donated inte-ractive white boards and other teaching sof-tware to each of the schools,” said DeidreDavids, Communications Manager at CapeTown International Airport.

“Our business is not only about airports,it’s about giving back to our communities. So, as an airport operator, contributing to-ward the development and sustainability ofour communities is very important andedu-cation is the foundation for thedevelopmentof any community,” she concluded.

The building was vandalised and constituted ahealth and safety risk. It had been accessed via the roof wherebeams had been removed causing the roof to collapse. This

constituted imminent danger to children and adults who passed thebuilding on a daily basis. Some youngsters from Bellville South got ataste of life behind bars last week, and theydon’t like what they’ve seen. They were partt of the group that was ta-

ken to Goodwood Prison last week by For-mer Tik Addicts Reach Out (FTARO) whohavebeendoing these tours for youthat risksince 2011.The organisation’s Dhakir Christians

pointed out that the project targets youthwho are at risk and it has been very succes-sful over the years.“Our success hinges on the fact that they

get the chance to have open candid discussi-ons with wardens and inmates who can de-ter youth from the journey to jail throughtheir bad behaviour.“Last week we did the tour in collaborati-

on with the local ward councillor Mercia

Kleinsmith, the local police and theCommu-nity Police Forum.”Christians, who is also Project Director of

Books Not Prison Bars, added that this is agreat program to deter children from a lifeof crime.“The effect it has on the children really

scares them straight.”

Positive resultsKleinsmith also added why she as a ward

councillor support this initiative.“We’ve had some positive results over the

past few years and seen some positive chan-ges,” she said.“Many of them even return to school to

complete their education.”Christians also points out that shock tac-

tics works.“We realised that part of being young is

the feeling of immortality and general be-lief, ‘It won’t happen to me’.

“I must say that after being on this tour, the fear of landing up in prison is really theonly thing that motivates a kid from embar-king on a life of crime.”During the visit the children are not only

exposed to the prison environment, but alsoreceive amotivational lecturewith topics li-ke values, morals, discipline, principles, responsibility, lifeskills, vision and plan-ning their lives on a positive path.Kleinsmith also explained that irrespecti-

ve of some criticism, this program hasachieved significant results.“We do not expect to reform and save all

the youth at once, but to save two out of tenyouths is a bonus.Christians concluded by thanking the

members of the communitywhomake thesevisits possible.“We would like to extend our sincerest

gratitude to Sharon Adriaanse and familyas well as Mosnul Islam and family.”

It’s not all physical!“There is a big difference between self-de-

fence and personal safety. Self-defence ispredicated on the fact that you are in a verybad place to begin with. Things have alrea-dy gone to hell in a hand basket. As such,self-defence is making sure the situationdoesn’t get anyworse – it is damage control, pure and simple. However, no damage cont-rol is ever as good as preventing the pro-blem in the first place. That’s personal safe-ty.” -Marc MacYoungContrary to popular belief thewillingness

and ability to defend oneself physically is bynomeans the only skill necessary for perso-nal safety. Personal safety is a holistic disci-pline which includes much more than thewillingness and ability to defend oneself ona physical level.

Don’t get me wrong. I fully believe thephysical side is crucial and I recommendthat any person in South Africa becomeskilled in it (more on this in later articles). However, it’s notwise to think that physicalskills alonewill keep you safe. By definitionphysical self-defence skills are for whenthings get physical. However, the physicalside to an attack or to crime is only one partin the development, or process, of the crime. There are many points in the developmentof the crime inwhichyou can subvert or dis-courage the criminal.Wewill delve into thisprocess along which crime develops nextweek. For this week I want us to expand ourthinking on personal safety.

Holistic personal safetySpiderWeb: A good analogy to think about

personal safety is that of a spiderweb. A spi-der web is strong because it is woven of ma-ny strands of strong fibre. The stronger theindividual fibres, and the more strands the-re are, the stronger the web is. In terms ofyour own personal safety you want to start

to think in terms of these strands. Youwantto understand what the different strandsare, how tomake them strong and then howto weave them into your own personal-safe-ty web. It is into this web that one has toadd the the strand of physical self-defenceskills.Personal safety is a web of different

strands woven together. Learn about them, make them strong and weave them into yo-ur life. The more proficient you become inall of these strands the more difficult a tar-get you become. The old self-defence adagerings true: If you don’t want to be an easyvictim become a hard target. Always re-member most criminals are very intent onkeeping themselves safe and free fromharm. To truly fight back against crime weneed to be hard targets and we need to helpthose around us to become hard targets aswell.V Read the full blog at www.tygerburger.co.za/blogslist. A house in Bonteheuwel will become morethan just a home when some special peopleget going with Extreme Makeover – Bonte-heuwel Edition.

Flame of Hope is a non-profit organisati-on that recruits volunteers to help domain-tenancework at orphanages, homes of safe-ty, old-age homes, children homes and un-derprivileged houses in the community.

Terrence Lackay is one of the organizersof the project and says that they are doingit in collaboration with the group, ProudlyBonteheuwel.

“We approached Proudly Bonteheuwelbecause of their successful “Nite Market”event of the 2013 Christmas period,” hesays.

“The name Proudly Bonteheuwel speaksvolume and our mission is for the peopleto unite as a community.

“I come from Bonteheuwel and the onlything people can talk about the area at themoment is the violence that is happeningthere.

“People are being shot on a daily basisbut I believe that if the community can finda way to do something out of the ordinarytogether...they will in turn work as a unitto make their area a better place.”

Terrence explains that the theme for thisproject is “You-Me-Together-We can be thedifference others are praying for”.

“This project will be part of Flame of Ho-pe’s community projects,” he says.

Nominate“The community nominate houses they

feel couldbenefit fromamakeoverand theydo their nominations via Flame of Hope orProudly Bonteheuwel.

“This nomination process will end atmidnight on 1 May. Then the house ownerand the person who nominated them willbe interviewed to make sure they meet thecriteria of the makeover. The criteria arethat it is not a rented house and that theowner occupies the house.

“Thehousehold incomemust be less thanR5000 per month and it should be drug freeor persons involved in a drug rehabilitati-on program for more than 3 months.

“The house must also not be used to doany business of any kind and not to be soldor rented outwithin 24months of themake-over.”

After the interview process the succes-sful nominations will go into a draw on the31 May at the Apricot Place Old-age Homeevent where the ward councilor will drawthe names three finalists.

The community can then play their partby voting for their favorite at an event thatwill be held on 14 June at seniors home todecidewho the beneficiary of themakeoverwill be.Full details of the project will alsobe released then but people or companieswho feel they can play a part in this projectcan contact the group in the meantime.V More information from Terence on 083 328 0095,or email [email protected], or John on 076335 0660, email [email protected].

Araging fire couldnot extinguish the “flamefor service”of the community at the Womenin Leadership organisation in Elsies River.Based at the Adult Education Training

Centre, 2013 was a very challenging year forthemwith three of their classes destroyed ina fire with all their admin, sewing equip-ment andmaterials destroyed, but theywerenot prepared to give up.“It was a terrible blow to us,” says chair-

person Matilda Vantura.“But there was no way were were going

to give up. We remain an organization thatrelies on volunteers, sponsors and fundingto sustain our projects and there are peoplewho believe we are making a difference inthe lives of the unemployed by giving thema skill.“Some donated machines had us continu-

ing even though we could not take on as ma-ny students aswewanted to, butwe continu-ed, even doing some small commissions forlocal manufacturers,” she said. Now with the new year in full swing

they’re planning bigger things for this year.

“We are starting our sewing classes againandwant people to sign up for these excitingnew classes,” she said.“Classes will be facilitated by Clotex whe-

rewomenwill be trained to design, draw, cutand sew their own garments.”Matilda also pointed out that their food

garden was also affected by the fire.“The irrigation system was damaged and

the well pump stopped working, but the ve-getables and herbs were hand watered andcontinued to be cared for.“Our spring harvest yielded tomatoes,

butternut, spinach, beetroot, cauliflower, chillies and herbs. “Some of the vegetableswere sold to teachers at the school and themoney used for transporting food to the oldage home.“We also sold hampers, pickled onions, ve-

getable atchar and paid gardeners with theprofit we made. “Our volunteer gardener iscurrentlyweedingandpreparing soil for ourwinter crops so our bakery facility can beco-me a temporary soup kitchen,” she said.Thebakery is also a sorepoint for the orga-

nisation, because it was always a hit withresidents in the area and the learners at theAdult Education Centre who loved the tasty

treats that were sold.“Our bakery is closed due to lack of funds

to pay the chef because all the electrical wi-ringwas stolen during vandalism inFebrua-ry,” she said.“Everything is in working order but we

need help with the wiring and maybe thereis a retired chef out there who wants to vo-lunteer to help us.”

Matilda also thanked the liked of GrandWest, OldMutual, TankClinic,Wheat Trust,Department of Social Development, CapeGate, Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry,Western Cape Agriculture, and the City ofCape Town who had supported them overthe past five years.V For more information call 021 253 708 or mail wo[email protected]

Belharwants some actionwith regard toDie Bult, the hill that grew from a was-te disposal site into a hotspot for crimi-

nal activities in the area. The neighbourhood watch in Extension 6

have been monitoring the situation in thisarea and calling on authorities to remedythe situation.Augustin Bell from the NHW in the area

says that they have written to the councilabout this problem as well as some other-matters that needed to be addressed in thearea, but one of the major problems was DieBult.“The specific problem is that it has beco-

me a haven for all types of illegal activities,”he says.“There’s dogfights, it’s a drug spot, as well

as a hiding place for guns and shooters.“What the community has been crying out

for years is that ‘the bult’ must be removedcompletely and recreational facilities like atennis court and swimmingpool be built the-re.“But we also know that this can’t happen

overnight that’s why we asked for it to becleaned, fenced and to be patrolled regularlyby the police”.

Whose Bult is it anyway?Bell also explained that when the commu-

nity started raising this issue they where gi-ven the run around because suddenly theBult belonged to nobody.“We were first told that it belongs to the

University of the Western Cape, then it wasthe police and now finally (it belongs to) theCity of Cape Town, but they’re still tryingto figure out which department must actual-ly take responsibility for the ground.”Othermatters that they raised in their let-

ter of concerns to the council was relatingto traffic in the area where timing of trafficlights at the intersection of the StellenboschArterial Road and Symphony Way was cau-sing the area to become a smash and grabhotspot.Another matter of concern that came up

was the removal of the blue rubbish bagsimmediately after the green bins or thestreet is cleaned.“Because the environment is one of the

pillars of crimepreventionwe as aNHWarecontinually fighting against dumping andthe creation of dumping sites in our area,”continued Bell.“The blue bags laying on street corners

forweeks on end is creatingmini dumpsitesand we would like the city to please encou-rage the contractors to remove the bags onthe same day.”

InvestigatedLocal ward councillor, and chairman of

Sub-council 6, Desmond Jafta, has respon-ded to these concerns and said that the pro-blems regardingTheBult are under investi-gation.“Any project needs investigation, plan-

ning, costing and then to be implemented,”he said.“This is the first time that I work on The

Bult and I have to gain more information,”

he said.“With regard to the arrows at the traffic

lights ameetingwas arranged and the offici-

als are busy with the evaluation. With re-gard to the blue bags and rubbish collectionit has been reported and action taken.”

City needs helpwith invasive waspsTwo highly invasive wasp species are ex-panding their range throughout Cape Townand the Western Cape. and the city is callingon thepublic tohelp identify and report newcolonies.

The European paper wasp (Polistes domi-nula) and the German wasp or yellow-jacket(Vespula germanica) have found the CapeMetro and the Boland to be an ideal habitatsuited for their expansion.

If left uncontrolled, they may spread tothe majority of towns in the Western Capeand other provinces where the climate iseven more suited to their requirements.

Both species are listed as invasive speciesin the National Environmental Manage-ment Biodiversity Act (NEMBA).

“These species require control by meansof an invasive species management pro-gramme,” says Louise Stafford, invasivespecies coordinator of the City of CapeTown.

“According to international cases of inva-sion involving both species, these insectshave the potential to create problems ran-ging frombeing anuisance to serious econo-mic impacts in the wine, deciduous fruitand beekeeping industries,” she says.

Aggressive“The German wasp in particular is ag-

gressive and there are several reported ca-ses of them stinging workers harvestinggrapes and other fruits. They can present ahazard to residents enjoying the outdoorswho may unintentionally disturb a colony. These wasps also feed on mature grapes inthe late summer months and cause extensi-ve damage to vineyards.

They are also known to attack and kill ho-neybees and infiltrate bee hives, which isdetrimental to the honey industry.”

Research is currently being implemented

by the South African National BiodiversityInstitute’s (SANBI) Invasive Species Pro-gramme, which is funded by the Depart-ment of Environmental Affairs.

They are trying to determine the rate ofexpansion and document new colonies tofind solutions to control the spread of bothinvasive insect species. The research pro-gramme, managed by a consortium of rese-archers, is now in its second phase and willmove to experimental trials on the effecti-veness of local eradication of both species.

The city and its partners are therefore cal-ling on the public to assist in documentingnew colonies by reporting their localitiesonline so that the appropriate measures canbe taken to control these invaders.

AreasThe European paper wasp is a medium-si-

zedwasp (20mmto 35mm)withwavyyellowand black markings on the abdomen andorange antennae.

Areas found include: Brackenfell, Kraai-fontein, Kuils River, Bellville and Durban-ville. The German wasp is also a medium-si-zed wasp (15 mm to 40mm) with yellow andblack markings on the abdomen but it hasblack antennae. A record of 750 000 waspswas recorded on a farm in Somerset Westin 2002. The German wasp is aggressive, es-pecially if the nest or surrounding areas aredisturbed.

Areas found includes Stellenbosch, So-merset West, Grabouw, Franschhoek, Paarland Wellington.V For more information, for photos, and to reportsightings, please visit http://www.capetowninvasives.org.za/edrr/targetlist or email EDRR@capetown.gov.za.

Sy was ’n‘spook’,” sê Hugo.

No electricity for several hoursor longer could lead to nowater (water is pumped usingelectricity) and no petrol anddiesel (petrol and diesel arepumped using electricity andare made using electricity). This will lead to hunger. Thenviolence. Isn’t it about timethat people took responsibilityfor their own electricity, water, food, sewerage provision, justlike our grandparents used todo? My grandmother lived inBantry Bay when it wasn’t soexpensive as today. Shecollected rain water. She had aseptic tank and French drainfor sewerage. She had hardlyany waste because nappies andall that kind of stuff wasrecycled. And she had hardlyany plugs in the house. Thingsgot done. Cheaply. Then alongcame the government and saidthey could do all these thingsfor her cheaper. And they didfor about 40 years, but oncethey had us all by the shortand curlies, the governmentbecame teh biggest businessand they started dramaticallyraising prices. And becausethey are the government,Competition Law doesn’t applyto them. In the Cape Town, wehave the Bus Rapid Transit, but taxis and private buscompanies can’t compete alongthese routes. Before Eskomthere were many producers ofelectricity in South Africa, until the 1920’s. We have justforgotten these facts. But 40years in the desert is a longtime and we have forgottenthat we used to make thingsourselves. We depended onourselves and our neighbours. We shared. We need to do thisagain.

Today, at about 14:30, I enteredthe parking area of PalmgroveCentre in Durbanville, from thegarage ramp. The flow of trafficwas blocked by a gold LandRover, double parked in frontof a loading zone and trolleyoff-ramp at the entrance of thecentre. Even after a gentleintervention from the securityguard and (other) drivers’impatient hooting, the manbehind the steering wheel didnot budge. Finally, when Imanaged to pass him, I showedhim my displeasure by hooting. He threw me a rude sign in fullview of children and passersby.

When I approached him abouthis blatant rudeness and cleardisrespect, he gave me a lamelie. His clearly physically ablewife hopped into the car withher shopping.

LEWENSKIEKIE

Boeke is duur, sal baie ouers severweer wees. Wel waar, maar daarom isdaar biblioteke om dié liefde by dievolgende geslag besluitnemers te kweek.Want sonder ’n leesvermoë, gaan hulleeendag beswaarlik besluite kan neem.
