With a focus on maths, school tea- chers are working with a developer to create content for applications. I’m pleased that more schools will be connected as part of this pilot project and it’s encouraging to see teachers embracing technology,” said Win- de. In Delft, the project is being managed by the Home of Compassion Ministries. The aim of their project is to connect 22 local schools. With development at the infamous Bult inBelhar in the news recently it seems thatsomebody thought that it would be a goodidea to start removing it – completely.Unfortunately it’s against the law as so-

me members of the local neighbourhoodwatch found out because this is not a desig-nated sand mining area.Augustin Bell, of Extension 6 NHW in

Belhar explained that last week they noti-ced that a big chunk of Die Bult was mis-sing.“Our guys went to check it out because

we thought it must be the city finally doingsomething about our complaints about thisarea,” he said.“One of our members reported that he

saw between 10 and 15 trucks driving awaysand, they entered and exited on the Chest-nut Place side.“They seemed like they were confident

about what they were doing but we don’tknow for how long they had been doing it.”Thematterwas reported to the local coun-

cillor and it was stopped immediately.Local councillor forWard 6DesmondJaft-

ha confirmed that he did not know aboutthis illegal sand-mining operation and thatitwas stopped immediately. Theneighbour-hood watch is calling for further investiga-

tion about the incident and if any stepswould be taken against the company or per-sons involved. “Although we want the Bultgone, we also want the money generatedfrom the sale of the sand to benefit Belharand not end up in city coffers,” continuedBell. Jaftha confirmed that the matter wasstill under investigation and would behandled by the city manager’s office.

Workers have been scraping, painting, fixing and building at the Parow trainstation for close to threemonthsnowandimprovements will soon be completed. This is according toMetrorail’s parent

company, the Passenger Rail Agency ofSouth Africa (Prasa), who says the con-tract value of the improvements is morethan R2,2 million and the expected enddate is 31 March. Upgrades at Parow sta-tion forms part of Prasa’s 20-year natio-nal modernisation programme. Accor-ding to Prasa’s communication depart-ment, the upgrade entails: refurbishingof existing ablutions and main admini-stration building; cleaning and paintingof benches and platforms; cleaning andpainting employee facilities; new buil-ding works, floor finishes, painting of a

second ticket office; and painting, repai-ring stairs and plastering of building forexternal works.“As a result of constructive engage-

ments with Metrorail over the past twoyears, all the stations in subcouncil 4 arebeing attended to,” says Clive Justus, chairperson of the subcouncil. He sayslast year residents of Goodwood partici-pated in weeding, mowing and landsca-ping the grounds of Goodwood station.Metrorail then started with mainte-

nance work on the subway, overhead pe-destrian bridges and painting of the buil-dings. Recently the roadway was alsotarred. In February the residents of Ri-verton Estate and Goodwood joined Me-trorail workers to conduct a clean-up ofVasco station.

A group of American students on a visit toseveral organisations in Eersteriver wereleft humbled by their experiences of the tripto the area recently.

The group of about 20 are post graduatestudents from the School of Social Work atHoward University in Washington DC.

Dr Cudore Snell, project director for theInternational Service Learning Project, which sees the students visit the country for10 days, said this is their fifth visit to thearea since they have been participating inthe project.

They visited the non-government organi-sation, Community Women Action (CWA),on Friday.

“I think this is the fifth time that we havecome here. When we came here at the begin-ning this was a single building, but it hasexpanded a lot,” Snell, who is originallyfrom South Africa, said last week.

Snell, who graduated from the Universityof the Western Cape, relocated to the UnitedStates of America in 1979.

Asked about the purpose of their visit, he

replied: “This is an academic programme. The idea is for our students to be exposedto social welfare, social development and so-cial work from a global perspective.

“Our mission at Howard University is toeducate leaders for America and the globalcommunity.

“We visited various organisations,” hesaid.

ProjectsFor two days they spent time either at a

creche or places like The Ark Refuge alongOld Faure Road, Eersteriver and the CWA.

“We did child development, went to acreche where they have a gardening projectand we also helped organisations with ap-plying for funding.

“Our learners come here because they areeager and curious to learn. They come fora very short time and we pack in a lot,” Snellsaid.

The students each have to keep a journalfor the duration of their stay.

“They tell us they come back as socialworkers. They become more humble, theylearn so much, they come back with an openattitude,” he said.

Prof Sandra Edmonds Crewe, the interimdean at the School of Social Work, said whattheir students learn on visits like these isthat there are different models of deliveringservices.

“Sometimes we get so invested in govern-mental support.

“I think they are reinforced with what pe-ople can do with little if they put their heartsand mind into it.

“As social workers we are giving them thecraft and skills, but this helps them to puttheir hearts into the work.

“We will talk about outreach in the class-room and this is what outreach looks like,it is about putting a face on what they arestudying,” Crewe said.

“We are here to see what we can learnfrom you. We want our students to be chal-lenged, to be open in their thinking,” shesaid. Tyriesa Howard, a doctoral student, said she has learned a lot from South Afri-ca’s culture in the short space of time.

“What is interesting is that the South Af-rican culture is not so dissimilar to the cul-ture in the US.

“In fact there are more similarities thanwe have differences,” she said.

The strong arm of the law is tighteningaround those culprits still making themsel-ves guilty of illegal dumping.Recent amendments to the Solid Waste

Bylaw, which regulates dumping, now em-power local authorities to confiscate andimpound the vehicles of perpetrators. So says Brackenfell and Kraaifontein

ward councillor Carin Brynard, who is alsothe chairperson of the City of Cape Town’ssafety and security portfolio.“This amendment came towards the end

of last year as a result of our ongoing fightagainst perpetrators of this bylaw,” shesaid.According to Brynard the main perpetra-

tors remain building contractors and somecorporate companies.“They do not want to pay the small fee

charged for bigger loads at the landfill sites, and thus send their vehicles and trucks todump rubble or waste on open fields andplots during night-time,” she says. The fee charged at landfill sites for loads

bigger then 1.3 tons is R57.“Ward councillors in all areas receive re-

gular complaints about this activity in our

neighbourhoods.” She urges residents towrite down the registration number or takea photo of the vehicle with their cellphonesif possible, when they see someone dum-ping waste or rubble on an open field orplot, and report it to law enforcement.Brynard says this evidence can be used

by law enforcement officers to lay chargesand fine perpetrators.“Littering and illegal dumping is viewed

in a serious light, and we will come downon perpetrators with full force.”Admission of guilt fines range between

R500 and R5 000, and should the case go tocourt, a fine of up to R10 000 or jail time canbe given. Perpetrators will also have to payamounts of up to R1 000 to have their vehi-cles released.Illegal dumping constitutes the deposi-

ting or discharging of waste anywhereother than designated waste collection faci-lities. It harms the environment, blocksdrains and stormwater canals, can pose ahealth hazard and spread disease and evencause injuries to children.V See a list of dropoff sites in the city on our website at www.tygerburger.co.za.V To report perpetrators contact the city’s emergency call centre on 107 from a landline or otherwise021 480 7700.

RICHARD ROBERTS@richardjohn_rj

His journey will take him over 747 kilome-tres and five days to complete. But for JulianOhlson fromBlackheath, the cause – raisingmoney for a poor farm school inOudtshoorn– is worth the reward.

The task he will be undertaking is in aidof two farm schools in the Karoo – JanGroentjie Pre-school and the Warmbad SpaPrimary School. The schools are about eightkilometres from each other and situated ina poor area where parents have either a lowincome or are unemployed.

“We met the manager of the school at ashop in Calitzdorp. She said she is not surewhat to do, whether they should close theschool or what. She said the school is in direneed. “I asked her what we can do to assistand she told us we can make people awareof their plight in that area,” Ohlson said.

Ohlson said his wife and himself then de-cided to do their part and help the school.“Ibelieve if you inspire childrenat a youngageyou can change their future.”

Ohlson and his wife visited the school atthe end of February where they had severalmotivational talks, donated clothes, foodparcels and stationary.

“One of the biggest needs is transport. It’sa rural area,” he said. He said he now wanttomake other aware of the schools situationand has therefore decided to cycle, and inso doing raise funds.

“I have decided to cycle from Port Eliza-beth to Cape Town. I want to do it for a goodcause instead of doing it just for myself. Iwant to do it for these 48 children.

“Perhaps 20 years from now one of themwill remember that I came to talk to themand they might become successful in life.Ohlson will be doing the trip as part of theOne in aMillion Project – a project that aspi-res to bring people closer toChrist. He iswri-ting to companies to request donations, suchas books for the library. The aim of the tripis also to raisemoney for a water tank. “Thearea is very dry. They have a vegetable gar-den but it is small and not well maintaineddue to the scarcity of water.” Ohlson, leavesfor Port Elizabeth on March 22 and departsthe following day on his bicycle towards Ca-pe Town.V People interested can donate money by sponsoring a kilometre. The costs vary between 5 cents andR20 per kilometre. For further information contactJulian on 084 562 4249.
