National This year, for the first time, the competi- tion expanded nationally across the country and 20 selected entrants from various re- gion, including rural areas, were invited to attend a regional one-day business work- shop to learn the intricacies of compiling a business and marketing plan, as well as how to manage the many functions of operating a business. Milk Matters, a community-basedmilk bank, is looking for donors ofbreastmilk to provide to preterm in-fants who do not have access to theirown mother’s milk.

According to the World Health Or-ganisation Born too Soon Report(2012)more than 1 in 10 babies globallyare born preterm, affecting familiesall around the world.

Sadly, over one million children dieeach year due to complications of pre-term birth.

The rate of preterm babies globallyare on the rise and creates extra pres-sures on already overburdened healthsystems.

However many countries have beensuccessful in increasing the survivalrates of these tiny infants, mostly dueto basic improvements in cost-effec-tive care such as kangaroo mothercare and breastfeeding support.

Milk Matters, a Cape Town basednon-profitable organisation, is provid-ing a lifeline to these vulnerable pre-mature infants. Milk Matters steps inwhen mothers are too ill or are bat-tling to keep up with the volume of ex-pressed breastmilk their prematurebabies so desperately need.

They can supply donor milk whilemothers recover and establish theirown supply.V Anyone who wants to donate breastmilkcan contact 021 659 5599 or 082 895 8004or send an email to [email protected] www.milkmatters.org for more.

Several incidents were also reportedwhere pedestrians were struck by cars onthe freeway.

“ One case of rape was reported where a25-year-old women was raped after walkingon the road late at night,” Jansen said.

“Two cases were reported where pedes-trians had to ward off suspects who attempt-ed to rob them.”

He warned the public to be extremely cau-tious when travelling on the R300 and to beparticularly aware of pedestrians crossingthe roads.

Murder accused Johannes de Jager (48)of Ruyterwacht, last week admitted tocutting up the body of Mpumalanga teen-ager Charmaine Mare (16), but deniedkilling her.

The trial into the murder of Mare, whowas killed in a house in Kraaifontein inJanuary this year started in the WesternCape High Court on Wednesday.

Mare had come to visit her friend Kris-ten White in Kraaifontein, the daughterof Carol White, the woman with whom deJager stayed at the time.

Mare was left in the care of De Jager, when the Whites went on a week-longcruise.

De Jager said Mare was sitting in thebathroom fully clothed, when he grabbedher arm.

“She fell and knocked her head againstthe rim of the bath,” he said adding that

this fall must have fatally injured her, asthere was no sign of life.

He contended that he then, in a panic, hid her body in a drain outside.

Two days later when he attempted to re-move her body from the drain, he wasforced to cut off her limbs with a bolt cut-ter.

He then dumped her burnt torso on anopen field and her legs near the N2.

He also stood trial on the murder ofParow sex worker Hiltina Alexander (18).

He also denied killing her, saying thathe merely fetched her for a friend, whorequested a sex worker.

He stated that he took her to his friend’ssister’s flat in Parow, where he left herstill alive.

Her body was later found on the N7.His plea was rejected, and the trial con-

tinues tomorrow.

Learners at Valhalla Primary have becomebusiness minded. The school recently participated in Es-kom’s Entrepreneurship EducationCompe-tition and were awarded as one of the threefinalists for the Western Cape.Charles Jansen, one of the teachers invol-ved with the team that took part said thatthe learners who participated were proudambassadors for the school.“We had to complete against 26 schoolsand the competition was tough,” he says.

“Themaingoalwas tomake learners awa-re of the high unemployment rate and thatthey must start thinking of becoming jobcreators rather than job seekers.”Apart from the competition the learnerswere also able to attend an expo, and attendworkshops which was an experience thatthey enjoyed. Jansen added that besides theopportunities and experiences, they wereawarded First Runner Up for the WesternCape.“We received two beautiful trophies andR25 000 in prize money which will be usedto promote entrepreneurship at ourschool,” he concluded.

Michaela Standaar and Asher Buys, receive one of their trophies from Eskom’s Arrie Bouwer, asproud principal, Andrew Lochner, congratulates them.

Tomorrowland Crèche in Belhar is celebrating 30 yearsof yesterdays, and still producing stars for the future.Thirty years ago they decided on that name because

they wanted to be part of the inspiration for learnerswhowould become the positive people of the future, andits been working.Margie Baadjies, principal of the facility in Belladon-

na Way, was there from the start, and the communityregards this as an achievement of a lifetime and con-gratulates her for her dedication, love and patience.Looking back to the beginnings she points out that

it was not that easy.“Thirty years ago, it was just sand here, tarred roads

and new houses,” she says.“There were no shops, no schools, no social or civic

amenities. Our children were small and the workingparents had to have daycare centres.“We had to establish committees and do it ourselves

sopeople likeEdnavanHarte,HannesBaadjies, BrendaGamba, Lynn Daniels and a few others broke theground and turned the first sod to start this facility.“It was hard work because sponsors were not readily

available andwehad to rely on influential personalitiessuch as Dr Richard Van der Ross to assist and Sanlam

became our main sponsor.”Asked what kept her going at the facility she ex-

plained that it was her passion for making a differencein the lives of children.“I have a passion for children, no matter what colour

or creed,” she smiles.“I enjoy working with them and just watching them.

I feel satisfied and appreciated when they graduate andget certificates for special achievements, when theypick flowers or when I watch them frolic in the sea wa-ter on our outings.“My heart celebrates when they sing to their hearts

content in our concerts or battle with those first ball-room steps when we have our debutant ball.“When they ultimately matriculate or get married or

achieve success, you feel complimented, grateful andsatisfied because youhave contributed to the formationof those successful characters and personalities andwish to thank God for the wisdom and ability to be ableto have done what was expected of me.”Baadjies points out that it is important to realise that

when these children come to them their minds are likeclean slates.“In fact the child will do as much as he is allowed to

do. I therefore do not see myself as a disciplinarian orcare-taker, but someone who is aware of all the cogni-tive processes that take place in the growing period.”

Think two beers at a watering hole stillleave you perfectly capable of driving?

That extra cold one could lead to youspending six years in the slammer or overR100 000 poorer.

As the silly season approaches, Law En-forcement and Traffic Services are out infull force in an attempt to keep the streetssafe and free of drunk drivers.

In a bid to reduce the road carnage, a callhas been made to reduce the alcohol limitin line with international standards.

The legal limit in South Africa for breathalcohol content is 0.24mg per 1 000ml or ablood alcohol limit of 0.05g per 100ml.

In literal terms, this equals two thirds ofa beer or spirit cooler with 5 % alcohol con-tent; 75 ml of red or white wine per hourwith an alcohol content of 12 % to 14 %; andup to one 25 ml tot of alcohol per hour forwhiskey or brandy drinkers.

Two drinks in one hour will more thanlikely put you over the legal limit.

The Automobile Association of South Af-rica (AA) continues to lobby for the bloodalcohol concentration limit to be brought inline with world standards, says spokesper-son Graeme Scala.

“The crisis on South Africa’s roads de-mands a tougher approach. The AA has forsome time proposed that the 0.05 % limit bereduced to 0.02 %,” he says.

“This allows some leeway for medicationsthat contain alcohol, but still emphasisesthat one alcoholic drink puts you over thelimit. A blood alcohol limit of 0.02 % means

that drinking even one beer with 4 % alco-hol will put an individual over the limit.”

Should you be caught driving under theinfluence of alcohol you could face up to sixyears in prison or be slapped with a fine ofup to R120 000.

Two years of court appearances and thou-sands in legal fees taught one driver to steerclear of taking to the road after hitting thebottle. The man, who was arrested for driv-ing under the influence three years ago, says he drove into a roadblock after leavinga party.

“The officer instructed me to phone some-one to collect my car as I would need to ac-company them to a testing centre for bloodsamples. I spent that night in the holdingcells at a police station,” he recalls.

The next day he made his first of manycourt appearances.

“Over the next two years I had a court ap-pearance each month; with each appear-ance the lawyer I appointed charged up toR1 500,” he says. “The case was postponedfor several reasons, including a delay in theresults of the blood tests, as well as a changein the state prosecutor.”

The case was finally closed and he wassentenced to 250 hours of community serv-ice. “I am still doing the time for my unnec-essary actions; it is something I will neversubject myself or my family to again,” hesays. “This was not only an expensive eye-opener for me, but also for my friends andfamily.”V More info at www.aa.co.za/about/pressroom/pressreleases/drinkinganddrivingwhatisoverthelimit.html.

Compensation of R42 million will be paidout to fee-paying schools in the WesternCape to recompense schools for fee exemp-tions granted to learners this year.

Minister for Education in the WesternCape, Donald Grant, made this announce-ment on Thursday, saying that this movewill benefit schools that are struggling withthe cost of exemptions due to parents whocannot afford school fees.

“We live in a tough economic environ-ment wherein many more parents simplycannot afford to pay their school fees, andthis ultimately places a burden on the man-agement of the school.

“This is evident in the number of learnersapplying for fee exemption,” Grant ex-

plained.According to him the number of learners

applying for fee exemption has increasedfrom 48 974 learners in 2010 to 70 153 in 2011and 90 506 at 783 fee-paying schools in 2012.

Grant says that parents can apply for ex-emption or partial exemption from payingthe due school fees on the basis of their com-bined annual income.

Parents qualify for exemption if theschool fees are more than 10 % of the par-ents’ combined annual salary.

They can apply for partial exemption ifthe fees represent between 2 % and 10 % oftheir annual salary depending on thenumber of children they have at a fee-pay-ing, public school.

Vandag be-

intelligensie, is ’n subtiele manipu-leerder.

vir Abnormale Gedrag (redakteurD.A.

It’s good to hear people speak-up as Yagyah Adams has done.(“We must all buy proudlySA”, TygerBurger, 13 Novem-ber). I for one support whatwas said in his letter. I takethe time to look for SouthAfrican, locally produced, etc.

If we are to reduce crime inour country, each and everyone of us should be doing whatwe can in an effort of unityand support toward each other.Cheap labour leads to cheap

products, leading to cheap life.Cheap has added greatly tocrime and the demise of oureconomy, it will continue ourdownward spiral.

The less we are prepared topay for our local South Africangoods and services, the lessthere is for our local SouthAfricans to pocket which theycould then use to plough backinto our communities andeconomy.

We want the best services, the best products, we want itcheap – cheap, discounted andfor free, we then wonder whywe are economically unsound. Many who have so little

income buy cheap because theycannot manage. Well then, forthose who can afford more, buy better quality, encouragequality, pay for the quality andplease stop the “cheap labour”.

The letter of Sickened “Showrespect, don’t use disabledbays”, TygerBurger Parow, 13November refers.

I am a disabled person andhave also wondered at therespect shown by healthypeople, parking in disabledbays. To be able to display adisabled sticker/card a personpays a certain amount of moneyto the municipality for theprivilege, its not free parking.

So for those inconsideratepeople out there, just remember, one day it could be you.

I do not agree with the writerof “Fietsryers moet op padvoorkeur geniet”, TygerBurgerTable View, 6 November, as Ihave witnessed cyclists onnumerous occasions disobeyingthe rules of the road, namely:Red robots, riding abreast andat night or in inclementweather, using flashing lightsfront and rear when theregulations clearly state that

Cyclists flaunt theroad rules at will

front and rear light are to emita steady beam.

They may be motor cardrivers as well, but that seemsnot to deter them from flauntingthe rules when they take theircycles to the road.

The only time they may rideabreast is: On a dedicated cycletrack, or, if taking part in anorganised cycle event.

The bottom line is that weshould all drive as the RoadTraffic Regulations dictate.

The beat of the ghoema drum and blaringbrass of the minstrel sound of the Cape hasbeenwith Ismail Dreyer ofDelft, since forev-er, andnowhe is part of ensuring that it liveson for a new generation. That is why he started the Forever Brass

Band, with the aim of sharing his love forthemusic with a new generation in his com-munity.He points out that themusic is in his blood

from growing up in the Bo-Kaap where hisfamily was always involved with the music.“I can’t remember a time without music,”

he smiles.“When I woke up as a child I was playing

trumpet, and it’s been my passion and loveever since.”Over the years he played with a variety of

“teams” and choirs, but always wanted tolead his own group.“We moved here more than 20 years ago,

but in recent years I realised that therewerechildren here who were growing up withoutknowing the traditions of thismusic in CapeTown.“I realised that thismusic had played a big

part in who I was as a person, I may not berich or educated at the best schools, but it

taught me to respect myself and thosearound me.“That is what I want to give these young-

sters, through the music they must learnhow to first respect themselves, their friendsand family, and how through their musicthey can enjoy life to its fullest no matteryour circumstances or where you come

from.”Ismail points out that it has not been easy.“Somehow I’ve managed to keep it going

with very little funding,” he reflects.“I don’t ask the members anything but to

adhere to the rules of respect for themselvesand the music. Those that live far from ourpractise room have to be transported, and

sometimes we like to give them somethingto eat, but I can’t complain, it’s what I haveto do to give them a better chance at life.”The garage at the Dreyer residence is a

hive of activity as members gather for theirSaturday practise.Members sit around warming up their in-

struments as Ismail talks to them about up-coming engagements, the need for punctual-ity, and respecting the rules of the band.In a corner a trombonist discovers that

there’s some false notes coming from his in-strument, so he begins repairs – with mask-ing tape!“This is our main problem,” says Ismail.“We’ve had to get our instruments from

pawn shops or just go for the very cheapest. We always need more because there are somany more children who want to join.“How canwe take themon, if we are strug-

gling tokeep these instruments in shape?Wereally don’t want money, we just need some-body to help with repairs, andwill gladly ac-cept donations of instruments that peopledon’t want any more.“Weare also looking for accomplishedmu-

sicians in the community to assist us withimproving our music by coming in to hosta workshop from time to time. It will all helpto make us a better band.”V Contact Ismail on 072 716 3401.

Birding Big Day, celebrated on Saturday 23November, is designed to celebrate and rai-se awareness of the national treasure thatis our wild birdlife.Take a little time today to really look at

the featheredvisitors to your garden. You’llsoon notice the variety in those grey flocksof pigeons, and that all those LBJs (LittleBrown Jobs) are actually a dozen or moredifferent species each with its own “perso-nality” and favourite places to hang out. There are many ways to add an extra fea-

thered dimension to the enjoyment of yourbit of the outdoors. Even a small patio areaor balcony can be designed to entice wildli-fe by using a variety of containers plantedup to create different levels of vegetation.Ballerina-flowered fuschias look pretty

pirouetting from window boxes or basketssuspended from a tree or pergola.Begonias, petunias andverbenasalsoadd

begonia, verbena, as well as pastel-shadesof phlox, with a thick layer of kraalmanureor other organic mulch to create a forestfloor that robins and thrushes will love toscratch about in. Hardy cordylines in largecontainersmake an air-purifying feature ofwell-lit interior spaces and, outdoors, addinterest and depth to any plant grouping. They also produce attractive berries thatfruit-eating birds will relish.Birds get as much pleasure from garden

It’s summer time– time to get active andenjoy the outdoors! And while you maynot be able to take your beloved pooch

with you to the gym, or surfing, or cycling, you can still take it walkies in the SPCAMy-Planet Wiggle Waggle Walkathon. This year’s iconic dog walk takes place on

Sunday 1 December at the Cape Academy ofMaths, Science and Technology, FirgroveWay, Tokai.Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year,

the hugely popular 4.5 km charity dog walkattracts thousands of walkers and their dogsof all shapes, sizes and breeds, who’ll puttheir best foot and paw forward in supportof the Cape of GoodHope (CoGH) SPCA. Lastyear, 1 300 dogs and 2 000 walkers took to the

streets, and evenmore people and their dogsare expected to take part this year.

Close bond“The event honours the close bond be-

tween owner and dog, and provides an op-portunity for dog owners to spend qualityfun timewith their furrybest friends. Peopletravel from far and wide to take part in thewalk and we are always extremely touchedby the love they have for their pets, as wellas the loyal support shown to the Cape ofGoodHopeSPCA,” said SPCAevent organis-er Juan August.Television presenter Tracey Lange, and

mediapersonalityCatoBekker, whoare alsoboth DJs on media partner Smile 90.4 FM,

will keep the crowds entertained as theytake on the role as MCs for the day. Before and after the event there will be a

wide variety of food and beverages availableand this year the popular Wiggle WaggleChristmas Market also returns – with lotsof goodies on sale for you and your pet. Andthere’s plenty to keep the little ones busywith face-painting, a balloon twister, stiltwalker, jumping castle, colouring in compe-titions, and a PlayStation/gaming station.

MyPlanetThanks to the support of new event spon-

sor MyPlanet, all funds raised from entrieswill go directly to helping the SPCA preventanimal cruelty during the upcoming festive

season.Puppies younger than fourmonths are not

permitted to take part and owners of short-nose breeds (i.e. bulldogs and pugs) andthose with older dogs with joint problems, are also cautioned to consult their vets be-fore committing to take part in the walk.A discounted entry fee of R35 per person

and R25 per dog will be offered to entrantswho enter before 17:00 on 29 November. En-tries on the day of the eventwill open at 07:00at a cost of R40 per person and R30 per dog.Children in prams participate at no cost.Enter online at www.spca-ct.ca.

GARY VAN DYK@gvdcapejazz

There wasmore than fireworks on Tues-day 5 November when Belvue PrimarySchool became the first team to defeat

the Proteas in the KFCMini-Cricket Kids vsProteas Tour. With a 33-run win on the 5th of November

in Cape Town, they got the KFCMini-Crick-et kids back into the series after the Proteaswon the first twomatches of the sevenmatchseries. All this excitement tookplace at the school

because local resident Lana Knipe was thesecondwinner in theKFCMini-CricketKidsvs Proteas Tour competition.Entering on behalf of her friend, Wilma

Jones, whose son Jesse attends the school, they encouraged all their friends and familyto enter the competition to increase theirchances of winning, and the scene was setfor an exciting game.Winning the toss and electing to field, the

Proteas were up against it right from thestart.

With batting being the real strength of theBelvue team, they used it to their advantageearly on dispatching Shabnim Ismail andThami Tsolekile to all parts of the field.

NervesThe expected nerves seem to do little to

hinder the youngsters against their moreseasoned opposition, but just as everythingwas going great for the KFC Mini-Cricketkids thanks to knocks from Rubin Deppe,Joshua Plaatjies and David Wagner, Alexisle Breton got the Proteas back into the gamewith two wickets in her first over. There was little time for celebration for

the Proteas team however, as Nicole Numanand Geneva Fillies put Belvue back on thefront foot with some inspired stroke-makingwhile Rory Kleinveldt battled to find hisrhythm with the ball.Once they departed, it was then time for

Wilma Jones’ son Jesse to showwhat hewascapable of.She was filled with excitement as he

strode to the crease, but hewas sadly bowledfirst ball by Mosline Daniels.

After that initial setback though, he part-nered withWaalied Adams and put togethera formidable partnership that took the KFCMini-Cricket kids to a score of 91 in their al-lotted 8 overs. In response to thedaunting target, thePro-

teas started slowly as Waalied Adams, theman of the match, was again proving to bea thorn in their side, this time with the ball.Needing 53 runs from 24 balls, the Proteas

couldonlymanageanother 20 runs, andwiththat, Belvue Primary were the deservingvictors.

PrideTeam coach andGrade 1 teacher at Belvue

Primary, Desiree Layman, was naturallyoverjoyed by the result.“I am bursting with pride. The kids were

verynervous thismorningandwewerewor-ried that they would not perform the waythat we know they can due to their nerves.“Some of the players don’t believe enough

in themselves but today’s game will givethem more confidence.”Fromaproudcoach to aproudparent,Wil-

ma Jones also had an amazing daywatchingher son take on the Proteas.“I saw that my son has the temperament

to play like Kallis.“He started slowly but when he warmed

up, he was unstoppable.”
