A clean cloth or sponge should be used and the solution must be renewed when it be- comes excessively dirty.” Wesso pointed out that they have tried this but the mould just keeps coming back. He also pointed out that renovations did not include adequate plans for ventilation such as ventilation bricks. “I had my own installed before the reno- vation and it worked perfectly, we never had this problem,” he said. “When we questioned the city about this we were told that building regulations did not stipulate these bricks in buildings any more.” Ernest Sonnenberg, mayoral committee member for housing, confirmed that com- plaints had been investigated and that ventilation was the problem, but the “air- bricks” were not the solution. “Even when there have been air bricks in buildings, the city has received con- cerns around condensation and mould complaints from tenants. As part of the up- grade the department has used paint of a very high quality and, because of the fin- ishes applied, they cannot contribute to the growth of mould. “Installation of air bricks is not a build- ing regulation requirement and they have been proved not to be an effective ventila- tion solution. Mould also cannot be con- trolled with air bricks but it can be with opened windows. “Additionally air bricks can cause a draft at night resulting in many people taping up existing air vents or placing cupboards against the walls where these vents are installed. This can create an even bigger problem with clothing in these cupboards going mouldy. “The use of air bricks also reduces the insulation properties of buildings making them less energy efficient. If tenants do not open windows, the problem is likely to continue..” Edmund Wesso with some of the mould forming in one of the bedrooms of the flat. Thecity’sCommunityResidentialUnit(CRU) programme is not all it’s sup-posed to be – with hot air the cause ofproblems.

While some residents are happy withrenovations that have been done to flatsin various areas, the condensation of airhas been causing problems with mould insome areas.

The CRU programme is a City of CapeTown initiative aimed at reviewing andupgrading 7 700 council rental units. These were divided into 11 project areasacross Cape Town for workload purposes.

Many welcomed this initiative becauseit included enhancing the living space sur-rounding the rental stock throughvariousinterventions such as fencing, plantingtrees, hard surfacing and parking areas.

Unfortunately for residents of theBergville flats in The Range in Elsies Riv-er, these renovations have not been allthat they were meant to be.

Edmund Wesso is one of the flats’ com-mittee members and a resident who is nothappy with the workmanship of the reno-vations.

“Our place was actually better beforethe renovations because we looked afterit properly,” he said.

“We moved back into the flat in April, but once winter started the problemsstarted coming up. As soon as the weatherstarted getting colder the mould startedforming inside the house.

“The city was contacted and they cameout to do inspections, but their answershave not been satisfactory.”

“What did they expect when they made

Ever thought of beinga tourist inyour own town?

Sounds strange but a Tyger Val-ley tour operator wants you to dis-cover Cape Town in a unique way.

Rhonda Savage-Julie has embar-ked on an initiative for Capetoniansto “discover” each other on whatshe calls her Koesiester Safari tourson the Cape Flats.

She pointed out that while thenew South Africa has been in exis-tence for the past 18 years, there arestill many people who have not dis-

covered some secrets that were hid-den from them during apartheid ye-ars.

“I realised that for some peopleour divided past still played a bigrole in people’s perceptions of theso-called non-white areas of thepast,” she says.

“With these tours they get thechance to meet ordinary familieswho will share their stories of life, and most importantly get a taste ofthe flavours of cooking in these fa-milies.”

Savage-Julie invited TygerBur-ger to one of her tours in Athlone, and while it was a major happy hun-

ting ground for me in my youth, itstill remains a vibrant and vitalcommunity.

She explained that many peopledo not realise the legacy of this su-burb.

“People on this tour have beensurprised at how much there is tothe story of Athlone. While the richcultural side has produced its shareof poets, writers and musicians, there is the aspect of young fighersfor freedom that came from thisarea, and their story is part of thesetours.

Executive mayor of the City of CapeTown Patricia de Lille has come outstrongly against the ongoing threats ofgangsterism in communities.

In a statement issued last week she said:Some of our communities face serious

challenges.Manyof themrelate tohistoricalpatterns of structural inequality. Some ofthem concern a past dominated by a lack ofopportunities. Still more are the consequen-ce of social and economic disconnection. In as much as these are universal pro-

blems that are not unique to our country, our particular history provides additionalcomplications. As a city working towards unity in our di-

versity, they affect us all. The OpportunityCity; the Safe City; the Caring City; the In-clusive City; and the Well-run City. Theseare the five pillars upon which we are buil-ding the future – for thewhole of CapeTown.Guided by these principles, we must allo-

cate resources for the kind of social redressthat can provide amore lasting reconciliati-on.Wemust interrogate the social problemsholding communities back. But we must al-so interrogate all of the factors that combineto undermine communities. We know about social, economic and his-

toric problems. But this government belie-ves in the power of individuals; the agencyof people to change their own lives. That is why we believe in the power of so-

cial change, where individuals take it uponthemselves to live with dignity and respect. The power of the individual motivated to

act is the power to change the world inwhich we live.On Saturday we hosted a march in Mit-

chells Plain to say thatwewill retake owner-ship of our communities and put those indi-viduals who would destroy it with their cri-minal enterprises on notice that Cape Townbelongs to us and our children, not them.We know that the problems in some of our

communities are a mix of the historic, soci-al, economic and the criminal.Weknow thatto confront these issues, we must have a‘Whole of Society’ approach andwemust ap-ply a battery of resources, from social to fi-nancial interventions. But where crime occurs, we must restore

safety and order first, otherwise all of ourother careful developmental initiativeswill, inevitably, be severely handicapped. This is our approach in the City of Cape

Town to fight drugs andgangsterism.Butweneed partners in order to succeed. As good as our Drug and Gang Units are

in the Metro Police – and they are the bestin the country – they have the limitationsof a municipal police force. What these com-munities additionally require on the directcrime-fighting front is the intervention ofthe South African Police Service (SAPS).We also need social interventions and so-

cial actions. That is why, tomorrow, we willbemarchingas communitieswhoareunitedto achieve change.Together, we will show that the problems

of our society can be addressed.

A young musical maestro isready to take on the world.

While the local music worldwill be bidding some sad fare-wells to trumpeter Darren Eng-lish, there’s a big reason to smilebecause he will be attending oneof the top music schools inAmerica to further his studies.

On Sunday 19 August he willbe flying off to complete hisMas-ter’s degree atGeorgiaStateUni-versity in Alabama, but he hasnot been resting on his laurelswhile waiting to take up thisscholarship.

There have been a number offarewell gigs taking placearound town, but he still hadtime to take part in theFMRJazzCompetition last week, and winthe first prize.

He will also be taking part inthe SAMRO Overseas MusicScholarship competition in Jo-hannesburg before leaving thecountry.

This is a journey that startedfor the young musician when hestarted learning the trumpet atMuizenberg High School, andthen going on to studying atUCTwhere he made history for get-ting full marks for his Honoursrecitals.

On Sunday he will be hostinghis last farewell concert at a ven-ue that played a big part in hisformative years.

Swingers inWettonwill be thevenue for a session with theAlvin Dyers band and variousguests.

“The Monday Night Jam Ses-sions at this venue played a bigpart in my growth in music,” headmits. “When I came here as ayoungster just starting out themusic that happened here justinspired me to want to do thebest.

“Alvin Dyers and the jazz fra-ternity at that venue becamementors for many of us, and al-ways encouraged us to keep do-ing our best. They all played apart inwhatwe are achieving to-day,” he said.

The action at Swingers inWet-wyn Road, Wetton, will start at19:00 on Sunday. There is no en-trance fee but a donation is wel-come to go towards living ex-penses at the university. Call 021703 1076 for more information.

Claire Phillips fans are get-tingwhat theywant –anewal-bum.

This dynamic singer and gui-tarist made her fans very happylast week when she released hernewalbum,ByRequest, six yearsafter the award-winning Say MyName was re-leased.

At the time thealbum won theSAMA award forthe Best R&B/Soul Album, andtopped the chartsonmany radio sta-tions.

While her per-formance sched-ule remained hec-tic there was justno offers comingfrom record la-bels, hence thelong break in recording.

“The songs have always beenthere,” she admits after a hecticCD signing session at the launchof theCD in theV&AWaterfront.

“I am not signed to any recordlabel so I had to find the financesfor this recording on my own. It’s been tough but the result hasbeen worthwhile.”

When she and her band got go-ing there was no doubt that theclass and creativity thatwas evi-dent on her first album wasgrowing. The fans did not wanther to stop.

It’s been an exciting journeyfor thismusician that grewup inBelhar, attended Parow HighSchool, who started her musicaljourney doing covers but soonrealised that therewas a creativ-ity inside her that she wantedthe world to hear.

A big part of the excitementthat her music creates is herband that she uses for live per-formances, and she swears thatour local guys and gals are thecream of the crop.

“You can hear that these catscook up a storm and are the bestfor me,” she says.

“On bass is Eugene MrGrooves Acker-man, LarnelleGroovemasterGordon, YvanPotts on key-boards, with back-ing vocals byRezelle Roberts,Edith Plaatjies andAbigail Bagley, allphenomenal tal-ents in their ownright.

“On the record-ing I had the greatpleasure of usingthe amazing BuddyWells on sax, andDarren English on

trumpet and flugelhorn.“When you hear it come to-

gether on thealbumyouhear thedifference that they make.”

Even though Phillips feelsthat she has achieved some formof popularity, local radio sta-tions are still not doing enoughto improve the profile of localmusic.

“My music is real and honestand it appeals to young and notso young,” she sayswith a smile.

“I grew up listening to such alot of music and it comes out inmy writing. This means thatthere is a large crossover appealto many music lovers.

“I think local radio stationsare not paying enough attentionto quality local acts.”

Watch out for this new onefrom Claire Phillips – you re-quested it!

SAREL BURGER

Cape Town and national Kung Fu Master,MJ Li (Muhammad Junaid Chafeker) hasjust returned from The Legends of Kung FuWorld Martial Arts Championships in Hou-ston, USA where he won gold and finishedfirst in the Internal Other Taiji (Tai-chi)Kung Fu divisions.

The Goodwood resident further added tothat, two more gold medals achieved in theSpecial Exhibitions Events under Bagua andH-Sing-I Forms Divisions.

Li was part of approxi-mately 1 000 kung fu ath-letes who converged onThe Marriot WestchaseConvention Centre inDowntown Houston. Ath-letes from as far afield asPeru, Canada, Mexico,Taiwan, Hong Kong, andChina competed.

Li was the only SouthAfrican who representedthe country.

Competition was toughand saw many regional, national and even conti-nental champions compet-ing at The Legends WorldChamps.

This was Li’s third

World Kung Fu Championship in which herepresented South Africa.

Previous competitions saw him in 2006 fin-ish third at The World Traditional Kung FuChamps in Beijing, China.

He describes the feeling of winning goldand being crowned “World Internal TaijiKung Fu Champion” as amazing yet a hum-bling experience that sees one reflect onyears of hard work, sacrifice and hard train-ing.

THOMAS CAROLUS

The game between Ajax Cape Town andSuperSport United takes place onFridayat the Cape Town Stadiumwith the kick-off at 14:00.

Tickets sales have already opened to en-sure that all football fans in theMother Cityhave enough time to purchase their tickets. Some 50 000 local supporters packed the

Cape Town Stadium to watch Ajax CapeTown take on the ‘’Red Devils’’ in the MTNFootball Invitational when the Urban War-riors stunned the fanatical United support-ers by going ahead four minutes from timeonly to surrender their lead late in the game. Both teams came into the game early into

their pre-season yet they were able to givethe fans a game to remember for a long time.Coach Stekelenburg said: “The Man Unit-

ed game in themiddle of ourpre-seasongaveus a good opportunity to measure ourselvesagainst a top team.“We had to be ready for the Manchester

United game, it was also their second gamebut we got what we wanted from the game.We saw areas thatwe needed towork on andit gave us an opportunity to watch a few ofour trialists in a match situation.“It was also important that the fans en-

joyed the game and judging by their reac-tion to our performance I am sure they did.The boys were outstanding on the day andthey made us proud.“Since thenwehaveworked on certain ar-

eas of our game and we are looking at newcombinations in various areas of the field. We will play a number of practise gamesagainst local opposition before the start ofthe new season because I feel it’s importantthat every player gets enough game time.“All our players are ready and fit and we

will continue to build on our preparationsahead of the SuperSport United game. Wehave no major injuries and the team looksfit and we are ready to play our first game.”Vasco Da Gama are determined to stage

a successful campaign and put themselvesin the mix for promotion to the PremierLeague next season. The Parow side enjoyed only a single sea-

son in the top flight after they won promo-tion to the PSL for the 2010/2011 season.“We’re definitely looking to get back up

the PSL and seeing what Chippa United didwas motivation for us. It shows anything ispossible with the right balance, the rightteam, anything canbe achieved,” saidVascoDa Gama coach Tony de Nobrega.“There is unlikely to be much of a squad

overhaul for the new season, it will ratherbe a case of fine-tuning certain areas.“There were positives and negatives last

season. We headed into the end section ofthe season in the top four, but our challengefell away and we were a bit disappointed.”
