’n Brandweerman wat sy verpligtingeteenoor Jan Taks wou gaan nakom,het verhoed dat ’n hele gebou uit-

brand.Enasbeloninggaanhyvir die res vandie jaar elke Vrydag ’n pak vis en skyfies bydie eienaar van die gebou kry.

Gavin Woolstencroft was verlede weekvroeg uit die vere, omdat hy nie in die langrye van die Suid-Afrikaanse belastinggaar-der se kantore wou gaan staan nie.

So net ná 04:00 verlede Woensdag het hyby die Engen-vulstasie in Monte Vista stilge-hou om ’n koffie teen die koue te koop. Toehy opkyk, sien hy ’n rookwolkie bo die dakvan die Marina La Petit-restaurant langsMonte Vista-boulevard.

“Dit het onmiddellik my aandag getrek en

ek besluit toe sommer om oor die pad te gaanen te gaan loer wat aangaan. Toe ek daarkom, het ek aan die voorruit van die winkelgevoel en dit was warm – ’n teken dat ietsaan die brand is,” sê Gavin, wat reeds twaalfjaar lank ’n brandweerman is.

Hy het dadelik sy kollegas in Goodwoodgebel. “Binne minute was hulle en die eie-naar op die toneel. Ek is seker as hulle nieso vinnig gekom het nie, het die hele gebouin ligte laaie opgegaan,” vertel Gavin.

A local sandboarding com-pany, Mamba Sandboar-ding, have started a com-munity project taking theless privileged children from Atlantis sand-boarding.

After taking them onto the dunes a few ti-mes and teaching them how to sandboard,a club was formed. The Mamba Sandboar-ding Club consists of 13 kids who now gosandboarding every Friday afternoon.

It is a great way to get them off the streets,keep them out of mischief and give them so-mething to look forward to, something thatkeeps them healthy and active.

Hy gaan dié week begin oefen ná ’n kortrusperiode, waarna hy later vanjaar aan dietradisionele kungfu-kampioenskapsbyeen-koms in China gaan deelneem.

Volgende jaar gaan hy aan ’n toernooi inBrasilië deelneem voor hy die titels gaanverdedig wat hy vanjaar gewen het.

“Ek beoog nie om nou uit te tree nie, wantdaar is nog baie honger in my. Wanneer eknie meer skoenlappers in my maag voel nie,gaan ek besluit om op te hou,” sê Li.

Local doctors are currently conducting the LAVOLTA II research studyfor patients who are unable to control their asthma, despite the use ofconventional asthma controller medication. They want to evaluate aninvestigational asthma drug to see if it can help better control asthmasymptoms.

If you’ve been medically diagnosed with asthma and are havingdifficulty controlling your symptoms, even with conventional asthmacontroller medications, please consider learning more about this study.

To be considered for a screening visit, you must:

I am constantly surprised byhow many dog owners in theKenridge and Durbanville Hillsareas walk their dogs withoutleashes, and how many dogsroam the streets without theirowners.

While walking my miniaturepoodle on a leash last year, shewas attacked by a large dogwho grabbed her in his mouth,shook her around, ran off, thensuddenly dumped her.

Needless to say, there was alarge veterinary bill, which theowner of the dog refused todiscuss and he renouncedownership. The police subse-quently told me that the doghad been returned to the pound.

While walking my dog withmy husband this year, aDoberman ran out of theproperty and went straight formy poodle. My husband kickedhim away before he could dodamage.

Not so long ago my neigh-bours were walking their dogon a leash and a St Bernardwent for their Labrador,attaching himself to the Labra-dor’s rump.

While driving in the neigh-bourhood last week, I noticed awoman walking two large dogswithout leashes, and on anotheroccasion, a man walking a largedog off leash.

I am too afraid to go for awalk, which is good for myhealth and that of my small pet,because of the unsocialisedanimals in our vicinity. It’s notright.

PD is an increasing majorworldwide health concern andone of the most commonnervous system disorders of the

elderly. It is defined as achronic, progressive neurologicdisorder. There is no cure, butcertain medical treatments haveshown to be effective in mini-mising symptoms of dysfunc-tion such as tremors, stoopedposture, freezing of gait andbalance loss.

Regular exercise has shownto be very beneficial to PDpatients. It helps improve theirability to perform daily tasks,their self-care independence andeven improves brain function.

While there’s no denying that pets area man, or woman’s best friend, many petowners forget the responsibilities thatcome with looking after our furryfriends.

One of these responsibilities is protec-ting your dogs against others and makingsure that they don’t harm other animals.

It is commonplace to see ownerswalking their dogs off their leads, andwhile in an ideal world, it would belovely to be able to give them thatfreedom, there are often complicationsthat come with letting animals go wherethey please.

According to the City of Cape Town’sanimal by-law, no dog is allowed in apublic street or space without a leash,unless the dog is in an area designatedby the council as a free running area.While there don’t seem to be too many ofthese in the Northern Suburbs, a list ofdog friendly beaches can be found atwww.spca-ct.co.za.

Likewise, owners also have a responsi-bility to clean up after their dogs. Simplycarrying a plastic bag with you when youare walking your dog would allow you topick up his “business” and discard it in abin where it cannot offend anyone.

She is a top class skater, a former Miss Fit-ness and now part of the ever popular skat-ing show Disney on Ice: 100 Years of Magic.

Kuils River’s own Nicole Rudolph, 26,who was Western Cape Miss Fitness 2010,is now touring the world performing anumber of roles along in the showwith oth-er Disney characters includingMinnie andMickey Mouse, Goofy and Buzz Lightyear.

Nicole, a former Bellville Technical HighSchool learner, told TygerBurger that shemisses home, but enjoys the thrills of tour-ing to other countries.

After completing her architecture degreeat the Cape Peninsula University of Tech-nology, Nicole joined Feld Entertainment,the producers of the recently performed atthe GrandWest’s Grand Arena.

“It has always been my dream to be inskate shows, especially ice shows and toperform. I wanted to do it after high schoolbut my mom said I have to go study first.

“When I finished my architectural de-gree I came back to skating. I tried to skateas much as possible during my studies, tokeep fit and active and also keeping inshape,” she said.

Nicole applied to Disney in 2011 and twoweeks later got a reply. “They said theywanted me on board,” Nicole, who startedout her performing career as a gymnast,said.

“My brother started ice skating halfwaythroughmy gymnastic career and I startedgoing with him on Saturday mornings. Ijust started skating, It really tookmy inter-est.”

Nicole’s talent on the ice was soon recog-nised by coaches who helped her developit further.

“I had to choose betweenbeing a gymnastand skating; I chose skating and it has beena successful choice since then,” she said.

UWC and GTP partners for ‘student city’Partners in design for a “Student City” inthe Greater Tygerberg region is what theGreater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) andUniversity of the Western Cape (UWC) hadin mind when they co-hosted a seminar onTuesday.

The seminar Student City: A Design LedApproach was held at the university’s De-partment of Design.

UWC and Shahid Solomon from the GTPlooked at the possibility of using a design-led approach to create this Student City.

“A powerful geometry of urban regene-ration, learning and innovation can be de-signed around Cape Town’s planned Se-cond Metropolitan Node,” says Shahid So-lomon, the GTP’s ProgrammeManagement Executive.

With more than 100 000 students, excel-

lent logistics and infrastructural linkages,the Student City opportunity can embracean extended campus for UWC, the Stellen-bosch University’s medical and businessschools, the Cape Peninsula University ofTechnology, the University of South Africaand Northlink College.

Durbanville’s multifarious Mr Cat and theJackal are about to release their third al-bum, S3T.

The number three is a recurring featurefor the album, which was recorded overthree years, in three studios, and coversthree themes: love, regret and doom.

The off-beat band made up of Gertjie Bes-selsen, Jacques du Plessis, Pierre-ArnoldTheron, Marcel Christie and JC Visser, gottheir start in 2006 writing theatrical scoresfor local productions.

“The plan was always to develop it into alive music band,” Gertjie says, but pointsout that they use the same sort of structurein the band’s music they would in scoringa theatre production.

Once their songs have been recorded theythen work out how to perform them live.“It’s always a bit different from the recor-ding.” With a myriad of unusual instru-ments making their way into their music,the band’s live shows are something of a the-atrical production in themselves.

Gertjie and Jacques usually develop thesong’s core before figuring out what accom-paniment it needs, the song then gets recor-ded and has percussion and other elementsadded. “Then it would be much more instru-ments than we can actually play live on stagewith five guys.”

This is why they band are a lot more expe-rimental in studio, where Jacques says theydo a lot of layering. “That definitely comes

from composing for theatre,” he says.The result, as Gertjie explains, is a theatri-

cal, alternative folk sound. “It’s difficult topin point one thing because we draw fromlots of different genres and we play differentinstruments,” he says.

Gertjie says the new album is more seri-ous than their previous releases. “It’s moreof a grown up album,” he says, quickly poin-ting out that it hasn’t lost any of the band’sexperimental flair.

The album’s themes came from what theband had been writing over the last few ye-ars. “We didn’t plan on a concept album,”Jacques says. “It feels to me like we kind offound certain ways of writing certain song.”It just so happened the songs fitted into threedifferent themes.

While some of the album was recorded atThe Fresh Meat Studio in Durbanville andthe University of Stellenbosch’s studio, thethird studio is “everywhere else”.

Gertjie explains that they recorded sound-scapes like the sound of a river, or fire,which set the tone or vibe for the songs. “It’slike the feel of where the song goes and sitson top of,” he says.

this year at the FISAF (International WorldFitness & Hip Hop Unite Championships) inPrague from 21-26 October.

Megan is the TygerBurger sportstar of themonth winner.

The 16-year-oldfrom DF Malan HighSchool and memberof the Splice Studioin Boston competesin the junior singlesand junior team ae-robic categories.

No quickfix“It all started back

in grade 6 when Istarted competing. Alot of thanks has to goto my parents forsupporting me andmy coach Marzannele Roux.

“There is no quickfix or short-cuts, itall comes down tohard work and dedi-cation. I train twice aday, six days aweek,” said Megan.

She has on two previous occasions compe-ted on the international scene. In 2012 shewas in the Netherlands and last year in Ser-bia. In both championships she competed onan invitational basis.

She now goes to Prague wearing her full

Protea colours.“This is surely, without doubt, a special

moment I will remember forever. I must sayit gets a little easier going overseas now tocompete for the third time. Not the competi-tion, because according to me the standardjust gets better year by year, but from an ex-perience point of view.

“I know what to expect and I am lookingforward to the challenge. But for now, it’s ti-

me to put in the hardwork and make surethat when I step onthat plane, I know Ihave done my verybest to prepare forthe championships.
