A desperate outcry for crisis interven-tion in crime-riddled Kraaifonteinwas the embodiment of the address

given at the memorial service of slain Kraai-fontein policewoman, Constable RozelleWitbooi, last week Thursday.

“Life in Kraaifontein has become cheap,”said member of provincial parliament CarolBeerwinkel, who attended the memorialalong with other dignitaries.

Witbooi was killed in a shoot-out witharmed robbers in Old Paarl Road, Kraaifon-tein a week prior.

Beerwinkel hailed the death of Witbooi asa turning point in the community of Kraai-fontein and urged provincial police commis-sioner Lieutenant-General Arno Lamoer tourgently intervene in the area.

“Something must be done… crime in thistown has become out of hand. The communi-ty has lost hope,” she said to a packed LofdalMinistries church in Brackenfell Industria.

During his speech, Lamoer asked: “Howmany more police officers need to die in theline of duty to keep our communities safe?”

He said 12 police officers were killed in theline of duty in the province last year – thehighest in the country.

“Society has to realise that the safety andsecurity of our communities is not the re-sponsibility of the police alone,” he said,adding that all social workers, doctors andsupport staff of all the relevant social servic-es departments must take responsibility forthe welfare of the community.

He told police officers to let Witbooi’s un-timely death be an inspiration in the contin-uous fight against crime.

“When one of us falls, it does not mean we

are down,” he said.Margaret Witbooi described her sister as

someone who was funny, passionate andprotective.“She would always put the prob-lems of others before that of her own. Shewas not pretentious; what you saw, is whoshe was,” she said. Witbooi would haveturned 31 this year and was in the policeforce for five years at the time of her death.Four of these years were spent at the Kraai-fontein police’s Crime Prevention Unit.

Before this she was a reservist at theKleinvlei Police Station for three years.

Kraaifontein Police Station commanderBrigadier Gerda van Niekerk describedWitbooi as apersonwhoalwaysworea smileand an officer dedicated to her calling.

Her funeral service took take place at theNewApostolicChruch inDennemere onSat-urday and she was laid to rest at a Kraaifon-tein cemetery.

Terrible Palsy. This is what the 9-year-oldNimoe deHoopwith Cerebral Palsy(CP) thought her disability was called.

Nimoe is one of 4 000 people in South Africawith CP. She suffered from a lack of oxygenwhen she was born.

No-one understands “Terrible Palsy” bet-ter than Lesley Potgieter, a mother, wife,author, ex-teacher and Edgemead residentliving with CP who is determined to changethis perception.

“Just because you have CP, it does notme-an you won’t be the world’s next astro-phys-icist,” Lesley says. “The question here is‘What are you capable of, and what will yoube capable of if we make some changes?’,”she asks.

One of Lesley’s projects to help childrenwith CP to discover their potential, is theAware Bear Helen.

Helen is a bearwithCP. Shevisits disabledchildren for twoweeks at a time to help thembetter understand and cope with their situa-tion. She travels with a journal, and eachchild contributes to the journal with storiesand pictures of the visit.

Helen was created after Lesley became in-volved with the American Awareness BearAssociation as a writer, writing letters tochildren with disabilities on behalf of a softtoy with a “disability” that goes out to visitchildren with the same disability.

Changing the perception“The South African society is not ready to

deal with disability,” says Carl. He says heloves to take his family to the movies andthe cinemas at N1 City have been redone re-cently, but for all the grandeur, there is onlytwo wheelchair seats. “And one is thek*kkest seat in the whole theatre. You arehalfway in the isle, you sit right under thelight”, and this, the Potgieters say, symboli-ses the way society sees the disabled.

“As soon as a baby with a disability is

born, everybody goes quiet. You are placedin a private room. People talk in hushed voi-ces. There is anegative connotation fromthebeginning, instead of ‘this is a gift’,” shesays.

Despite spending her whole life with nosensation in the right side of her body, Les-ley was able to complete high school in amainstream school, because her body res-ponded sowell to treatment, but she still hadto face many challenges.

“If a teacher does not have remedial back-ground, it is very difficult to understandwhat a child with special needs really needs.I was always in trouble for not being able todraw a straight line with a ruler, simply be-cause one cannot do thatwith one hand.Andthe physical limitations of children with CPcan be countless,” she says.

Lesley finished school and became a tea-cher herself and married the love of her life,Carl. They have two boys, Josh and Adamwho are 12 and 11.

More challengesFive years ago, she suffered amajor stroke

and her body lost its ability to compensatefor her disability. According to Carl, every-thing changed after that. Lesley had nospeech left and she could not walk anymore.But by doing yoga and excercises in the pool,she slowly fought her way back to being mo-bile again.

Today she can move around the house onher own, but drives amotorised scooter onceshe goes out. Her speech has partially retur-ned, but inmany cases Carl has to translate.

But they are not interested in the blamegame. Instead Lesley uses her energy for theCP cause.

“Small children do not know they are dif-ferent. But once you are a teenager with CPyou not only realise you are different, yourealise you are REALLY different,” she says

Helen and the community of Aware Bears“Yes, I am different, but I am not alone.”

This is the message of Lesley’s brainchild,

Helen.“I liked it so much that you understand

how tricky it is to walk and run on wobblylegs and how braces and splints sometimeshurt,” writes one child.

“Helen allows children to advocate forthemselves. One pro-active parent took herCP child to the shops with her and Helenwent with. People started talking to thechild, because Helen had her T-shirt on thatsaid ‘Hi I am Helen, I have Cerebral Palsy’and the child started answering questionson behalf of Helen. The mother was amazedat how much the child actually understoodabout the situation,” Lesley says.

“Because she is an inanimate object, she

can help the child to extend himself,” Lesleysays.

In the last 14 months, Helen has visited 17children and three schools throughoutSouth Africa. “Lesley understands the pro-cess. She helps the children set goals andachieving them. The idea is to empower peo-ple and to break their isolation,” says Carl.

“The challenge is to find the families whoneed Helen, because she is available for vi-sits, and it costs nothing,” Lesley says.

huizen could say when CapeGate ShoppingCentre recently opened their hearts tochildren in local communities.In taking hands with local children’s mi-

nistry, I Am Special, the shopping centreused all the money raised with the Christ-mans gift wrapper fundraiser to buy booksfor this organisation based in Durvanville.“Our biggest need at I Am Special, is

books,” says Oosthuizen, spokesperson forthe organisation.“Everyyearwe spend timewithover 3 000

children in different schools every week.We read to them, tell stories and teach themdifferent skills. We also provide every childwith an I Am Special book that is theirs tokeep. But as amazing as this sound, we nee-ded help with paying for the books,” shesays. CapeGate saw this as the perfect op-portunity to help out and according to Oost-huizen they raised enough money with the

gift wrapping fundraiser to pay for all thebooks.“We handed these books out between 12

and 21 February at our weekly classes andthe emotion was priceless. If every personhas one opportunity to touch a heart theyshould grab it with both hands,” says Oost-huizen.The organisation reached out to four

schools: Aristea Primary; Simonsberg Pri-mary; Blue Mountain Primary and GardenVillage Primary.“I Am Special ministries would just like

to school and other stories is proving to bea hit with youngsters and even with a fewadults.

FascinatedTygerBurger’s news editor, MaranaBrand van Hulsteyn, can vouch for that af-ter reading it hundreds of times to herdaughter Gabriela.The 4-year-old wonders about the bunny-rabbit calledSisiwhohas to go to school andMarana is fascinated by the characters’shoes.Both seem engrossed in the tale.It is clear that Wendy’s book, which is de-lightfully complemented by Joan Rankin’swatercolour paintings, awakes the child ineach of us.This alone is reason enough for the 66-ye-ar-old Wendy to do what she does.“If you can still appreciate things and fee-lings through the eyes of a child then you’rewell on your way being an adult,” musesWendy.While she was writing her latest work,the second book of the Sisi collection, thetrick was to live up to this philosophy andlet the child within her speak louder thanher responsible adult voice.“I had to resolve Sisi resolving her ownfear of going to school for the first time. Itwas so difficult to get her to handle it in away that you’re not telling a child to handleit,” says Wendy.

ForgetAs it turned out Sisi’s younger brothersaid thathewanted to go to school anddespi-te Sisi’s cross-examination he persisted.This of course clinched it for the scaredsister.If her younger brother isn’t afraid then itstands to reason that she is not afraid and,in fact, never was.“Adults tend to forget the little things andbattles they went through as a child. Oneshouldn’t! If you remember it then you areable to assist the next person so much bet-

ter.”When Wendy was asked whether she canremember the start of her own school ad-venture she responded: “I remember partsof it... I mean, heavens, I’m 66!”Sisi’s story would not have been nearlyas compellingwere it not for Joan’s illustra-tions.Marana’s daughter just needs one mo-ment to look at the picture before she knowsinfinitely more than what is revealed inblack and white.Wendy admits that Joan’s illustrationsare stunning.Getting the message through to a child isclearly a team effort on a grand scale.The writer conceptualises, illustrator vi-sualises, publisher realises, parent drama-tises and the child fantasises.Sisi speaks to us all.

Leerders van ’n skool in Eersterivier, wat ’nkompetisie gewen het, kon eindelik verledeDonderdag die vrugte pluk van dié wen – ’nkuier saam met Kuier, die gewilde leefstyl-tydskrif.

Dié Laerskool PalmPark is een van 15 sko-le wat ’n motiveringspraatjie as deel van die“Kuier in die klaskamer”-kompetisie gewenhet.

“Verlede jaar het die tydskrif Kuier ’nveldtog begin waarin skole in die Wes-Kaapkon aansoek doen vir ’n besoek van die Kui-er-span,” het Raylentia Simmons, adjunkre-dakteur van Kuier, aan TygerBurger gesê.

“Uit die oorweldigende getal aansoekewatontvang is, het dit duidelik geword dat skoledaarna streef om meer vir hul leerders tegee,” het sy gesê.

“Dié skool is gekies omdat hulle die enig-ste skool was wat spesifiek ’n beroepsessieoor joernalistiek versoek het,” sê sy.

werker.“Sy is betrokke by die kerk, die jeug en

sing in die koor. Ek wil hê haar skoolloop-baan moet glad verloop, maar dit gaan niealtyd geldelik goed nie,” het die ma gesê.Harriet het gesê sy is gelukkig en dat die

mentorskap ’n verligting vir haar ma is.Gavin, ’n pa van ses, het gesê daar is ’n

cellent job in putting together a scheme thatis really easy to use and one that will helpmany young people find their places in theworking world.”He explained that a business taking on a

young and inexperienced worker at a salaryof, say, R2 000 a month would be able to de-duct half the salary (R1 000) from its next PA-YE payment to SARS.“This is instant help for small businesses,”

said JanineMyburgh, president of theCham-ber.“We predict that it will mean many more

jobs and itwill help small businesses to grow.One of the big problems the country face isthat young people cannot get jobs becausethey have no experience and are now unableto findwork. This is a ‘catch 22’ situation andat last we have a way to break the impasse,”she said.Bagraim explained that the scheme ap-

plied to young South Africans aged between18 and 29 who were starting their first jobs,but all jobs in the public service were exclu-ded. Also excluded were domestic workersand workers “connected” with their employ-ers. Newworkerswho started their jobs after1 October last year would also be subsidisedbut only from January this year. Therewould be no form of back pay.Bagraim said even better grantswere avai-

lable for companies which employed matri-culants as apprentices or learners andwherejobs were linked to formal training at accre-dited institutions. These grants amounted toR121 500 per apprentice per year.

SouthAfrican icon, PJ Pow-ers, is showing fans anoth-er side in her new produc-

tion, Firefly, currently on at theRoxy Review Bar.“In order to see your firefly,

there has to be darkness,” PJsays, explaining the name of theproduction.“I’m a recovering alcoholic,”

she goes on, explaining that thealcoholism took her to rock bot-tom.“It was in that blackness that

I saw my firefly.”Her addiction is one of the

very personal parts of her jour-ney that PJ explores in her inti-mate new show.“Cape Town is an area that I

haven’t exposed myself to for acouple of years and the RoxyTheatre is a fabulous theatre,”PJ says of her decision to stagethe show in Cape Town.“Also I am very nervous of

smaller audiences,” she says,adding: “A sea of 10 000 peopleis much more comfortable forme. “

Expose“I just decided if I was going

to exposemyself in thisway thatI am, because people find thingsout about me, that they don’tknow, that they haven’t everread before, that I wanted to doit in a more comfortable envi-ronment than Johannesburg,”PJ explains, adding that Johan-nesburg tends to be a harshplace sometimes.While busy with the produc-

tion, PJ is also in the process ofwriting a book with MarianneTham as a ghost-writer, whichis another reason why she is inCape Town.She had been flying to and fro

between Johannesburg andCape Town so far, but PJ says:“The truth is the writing has tobe done by the end of March.”On her days off, PJ is spend-

ing time with Marianne work-ing on the book,which is the sto-ry of her life.“But it’s not just the story of

my life,” PJ says, adding: “It’s astory about South Africa, it’sabout this young white apoliti-cal, middle-class human beingwho suddenly was embraced bythe whole of Africa.”“There are many parallels

about South Africa and thecountry that we live in and mylife,” she goes on.PJ also discovered a comedi-

an in herself along the way. “Iwanted to be able to tell some ofthe stories that I have,” shesays, adding that there are somethings that have happened inher life that are “extremely fun-ny”.

AddictionIn her fifth year of sobriety,

PJ says she has watched howthe “disease of addiction haspulled many families apart andis busy pulling our country topieces”. This is what made herwant to tell her story.Her relationship with the late

Nelson Mandela, which she hasnever spoken about before, isone of the highs that PJ looks atin Firely.“I was very lucky to have a

close relationship with him andhe was a constant guide,” shesays, adding that he even wroteto her from prison.The lows she talks about is

where her career “hit theskids”.“I lost my house, lost my car,

lost every material possession Ihad and had to start again,” shesays.“Most of it is done with quite

self deprecating humour,” PJsays of her show, adding: “Idon’t mind laughing at myself.”Last year, PJ released a new

album, called Destiny.“I do believe that we create ourown destinies,” she says of thename, adding: “I think that ourthoughts become our desti-nies.”“Those songs came from pain

and hurt and happiness,” PJsays of her new album addingthat from a lyrical point of vieweach song is “like a little book”.“Lyrics are very important to

me,” she says, adding: “Eachsong has a whole story.”Firefly includes PJ’s well-

Fair organisers have announced the ap-pointment of celebrated independent cura-tor, Ernestine White as guest curator. Shehas more than 15 years’ experience in thevisual arts arena. She is also a skilled artistin her own right, and her work features ina number of major local and internationalcollections

For her participation in this year’sCTAF, White is using the opportunity to cu-rate the work of Lyndi Sales, whose intrica-te, ephemeral pieces have garnered wide-spread critical acclaim.

As part of the special projects program-me at the Cape Town Art Fair, Josh Gins-burg will be assembling a series of microexhibitions. Presenting a diverse range ofworks loaned from galleries, private collec-tions, friends, colleagues and the booths atthe fair itself, the project aims to engage vi-sitors in conversation catalysed by the shif-ting combinations presented.

Two “almost celebrities” are encouragingpeople to turn Neknominations into RAK-nominations and at the same time wentstraight to the top, nominating Helen Zilleand Jacob Zuma to also perform an act ofkindness.

M.J. Viljoen and Gerrit (Bul) Cilliers, thefaces of a television series, Amper Famous,which they hope to get on television soon,turned their Neknomination into a “randomact of kindness” or RAKnomination.

Neknomination is an online drinkinggame that requires participants to filmthemselves “downing” a drink and then up-loading the footage. The participant thennominates two others and so the game goeson.

“It is a massive trend at the moment, butthus far five people have died from this‘game’ and MJ and myself do not feel thatit is sending the right message,” Bul says.

So, when the guys were nominated bytheir manager, Wouter Coetsee, the twoswopped a beer for dog food and headed toa local animal shelter to do something goodinstead.

“Transforming into a RAKnomination weare able to touch thousands of lives whereif we did the normal Neknomination, itwould have only given a couple a people alaugh,” Bul explains, adding: “After seeingall the good that South Africans have beendoing around the world, MJ and I thought

that it is time for us to make a positive markas well.”

Bul says: “We have always had a passionfor animals and feel that although it is equal-ly important to help humans in need, peopletend to have a voice and the ability to changetheir lives where animals don’t have that

luxury.”The two filmed their random act of kind-

ness and nominated two other people to alsotake up the challenge, like the normal Ne-knomination, except they didn’t challengefriends.

Bul explains their nomination: “HelenZille and Jacob Zuma are two of the – if notthe most – influential people in South Africa.Both of them have the ability to make mas-sive changes in our country and what a bet-ter way to kick off an election year withsome ‘Random Acts of Kindness’ from bothof them.

“A leader should lead from the front andthem accepting the challenge will thereforecause a chain reaction and get even morepeople involved,” Bul says.MJ and Bul alsochallenge TygerBurger readers to contacttheir local animal shelter and get involvedby volunteering or donating goods.

“Like they say: ‘What we do in life echoesin eternity’,” Bul says.

Abrahamse describes Someday Rush’s mu-sic.The alternative rock band is preparing to

launch their EP, Fight love Live, this wee-kend.“It’s very diverse and basically encompas-

ses the things that you go through in life,”drummer, Michael Gentis, says of the EP,adding: “Especially adult life, as your arefinding yourself.”“It’s also a reflection of our evolution as

a band,” adds vocalist Carmen Julius.“We started out three years ago and up to

now, this is the best thing we’ve producedso far,” bassist Caylon Hammond explains.“It’s a hard rock album, something we all

love to do and Carmen’s vocals just adds abit of sexiness to it,” he says.

TitleWhile busy working on the song “Fight lo-

ve live” the band decided to use the song astheir album title, because it captured every-thing they wanted to say.The group worked with Ladismith based

producer, Joe Ellis, of Blooroom Studioswhen they recorded the EP.“Personal opinion probably, but the best

person we’ve ever worked with,” Caylonsays of Joe.He goes on to talk about the evolution of

the band: “I think we started out very dis-jointed.”“Coming into the bandwe all had different

influences and at first we thought we wereabsolutely great, but clearly not,” Caylon jo-kes, adding that he feels they have grown to-gether as a band since then, taking them toa place where they can produce somethingtogether that they are proud of.

“We can also identify what our sound isnow,” Michael adds.Carmen also points out that because some

of the songs on the EP were written a fewyears ago, and have been developed over ti-me, they are also a symbol of the band’s evo-lution.Like many Cape Town bands, Someday

Rush is a mixture of members from otherbands who ended up playing together in2010. Their fifthmember is the quiet rhythmguitarist, Nick Pugin.

The Imbewu Trust is calling for applicationsfor their third SCrIBE Scriptwriting Compe-tition, with a number of prizes available thisyear.

Entries open on 1 March, closing date forapplications is 31 July and the top fivescripts will be selected for a week-long sta-ged reading in October, with the opportuni-ty for discussion and feedback from the pu-blic and members of the theatre industry.

The winning script will be produced by aprofessional creative team for a run at a Ca-pe Town theatre in 2015. A second winnerwill have the chance to further workshop hisor her play, with a third award of the Scrib-blers Dream, a financial prize to enable awriter to work alongside a mentor to develophis or her script.

The panel of SCrIBE judges comprises agroup of seasoned theatre practitioners. The highly acclaimed international pianoduo, Genova and Dimitrov, will dazzle CapeTown with virtuoso four hands/one pianoplaying on Sunday 2 March.

Piano duo set to dazzle City

It was from wanting to bring her overseasconvention experiences home that ManuelaGray, of Wildfire Tattoos, decided to startthe Cape Tattoo Expo.

“The idea came about from having travel-led to all the conventions overseas, and wan-ting to bring that home,” Manuela says.

“There was no platform to promote our in-dustry at that level at all,” she goes on, ad-ding: “So after meeting a lot of awesome tat-tooers around the world and convincingthem to come to Cape Town, the first Interna-tional Cape Town convention was born.”

Now in its sixth year, the festival thatshowcases all aspects of tattoo culture hasbecome a staple on local calendars.

This year’s Cape Tattoo Expo will runfrom 28 February to 2 March 2014 at CapeTown City Hall. Apart from the local and in-ternational tattoo artists who will be show-casing their work, attendees can also lookforward to a “Victorian Oddities” themedart exhibition and live entertainment on theSaturday night.

“The idea of the expo is to provide the SApublic with an environment where they canget tattooed by great artists of their choo-sing,” Manuela explains. “But, as important,it’s also a platform for tattoo artists to show-case their artistry, skill, and creativity in anopen and social environment and for the SApublic to see how varied and evolved the in-dustry has become,” she says.

“The event is of a very high standard,which of course helps to change out datedperceptions,” she explains.

“But overall the stigmas are pretty out da-ted. We are living in a different world now,and personal expression is encouraged,” she

points out.There will also be a ‘tattoo-athon’ over the

coming months in aid of the CHOC Child-hood Cancer Foundation SA.

powerhouse invitational team at the Best-med Tour de Boland, presented by ASG, ear-ly next month.The four-day road tour, which starts in

Franschhoek on 4 March, will pit Sauser’sstellar line-up of mountain bikers againstthe cream of South African roadies.The Meerendal-Songo.info team will in-

clude the Swiss champion’s new Cape Epicpartner Frantisek Rabon, as well as localpros Erik Kleinhans, Lourens Luus, NicoBell and Oliver Munnik.They will face off against pro teams like

Abantu, Bonitas and the local MTN-Qhube-ka outfit, which includes last year’s champi-on Nic Dougall.

“I’m glad therewill be good competition!It willmake the race interesting and it liftsour game too,” said Sauser.“We asmountain bikerswill be verymo-

tivated to give the pro road teams a goodrun.”He said formerWorldTour road riderRabon, whomade the switch to off-road ra-cing this year, would be the team’s “besthorse” for the European-style tour.“I hope Rabon will win the prologue ti-
