Difference Thru Sport (DTS) in Parow Valleyhas applied to register as a non-profit organi-sation which will allow them to apply forfunding and sponsorships. In themeantime, this community-run orga-

nisation is going fromstrength to strength, al-though almost no money changes hands, thanks to the enthusiastic volunteers teach-ing a growing group of underprivileged chil-dren sport and life skills.“We recently hosted a five-a-side soccer

tournament and achieved a major objective:to get different leaders from neighbouring ar-eas and similar community projects togeth-er,” said DTS founder Ricky Vigeland.“We are all struggling, so we said: ‘Let’s

connect and see how we can strengthen eachother’. These are people I connected with onFacebook and they all came,” Vigeland said.More than a hundred children and 11 teams

from Leonsdale, Brooklyn, Riverton, Ruyter-wacht, Cloetesville and the Joubert Streetside of Parow took part in the tournament toconquer an intercommunity trophy, whichwill be competed for regularly from now on.This time, the Riverton team were the win-

ners.DTS already has a junior and senior league

soccer team, and also offers dancing, cricket, karate and kick-boxing training.“Because of this event, others became inter-

ested. They want to take part because it isstructured,” Vigeland says.On 30May DTS will host a basketball clinic

presented by Cape Town Basketball. The clinic will consist of an introduction to

the rules and skills of basketball, followed bymatches. The entry fee is R5 and the clinic will start

at 09:00 on the corner of Piet Retief and Dun-can streets, Parow Valley. Food and refresh-ments will be on sale. Children of all ages arewelcome.

V For more info contact George Mentoor on 078 7392739 or Ricky Vigeland on 081 017 0774.

According to the World Health Organisati-on, nurses bring people-centred care closerto communitieswhere it is neededmost, the-reby helping improve health outcomes andthe overall cost effectiveness of services. An effective and popular measure of cost

saving inhealth care is task shifting, vanderMerwe says. Through this measure, tasksand responsibilities that would have traditi-onally been performed by doctors, such asprescribing medicines, are being shifted tonurses, especially in the primary care con-text.“Nurses have been able to prescribe ART

(antiretroviral treatment) for some time andcurrently there are processes underway toextend it to othermedicines in awell-regula-ted fashion,” she says. But she warns that task shifting has to be

carefully planned and managed in order toprevent overburdening nurses, particularlyin South Africa which is plagued by healthcare staff shortages.“A shortage of resources, in particular hu-

man resources, means that in addition tothere not being enoughhealth care staff, the-re is also a shortage of administrative staff.Thismeans that tasks such as supply and pa-tient services management are also left tonurses, putting a further burden on nursingstaff, limiting time and lessening energy fornurses to provide quality care.“Burn-out among nurses and midwives is

of great concern,” van der Merwe says. “Ha-

ving too much to do causes stress and de-pression. They become despondent and stopcaring about their work and develop an atti-tude of ‘I’ll just do the minimum’. This inturn impacts on patient care.“ This touches on the second goal of the

Nurses’ Day theme of being effective, whichrelates to the extent to which health pro-

blems are solved. The basis for effective nur-sing is the competence and education of nur-ses, an area that is currently undergoingtransformation.“The South African Nursing Council and

higher education institutions are redesig-ning the curricula of nursing programmesto be in line with the national higher educa-

tion framework. In future nurseswill obtaina Bachelor’s degree in general nursing andmidwifery. Specialisation in areas such aspsychiatry, critical care, or primary healthcare, will be obtained through additionalpostgraduate studies. The current dispensa-tion of a fourfold basic nursing programmeis being phased out,” said van der Merwe.

Bellville and Parow railway commut-ers beware. The warning is issued by a Bell-

ville resident who was viciously attackedon a footbridge recently.Luciano dos Santos was returning

home after an afternoon at the ParowCen-tre o n Saturday last week. He told Tyger-Burger the incident happened around16:30 as he was passing through the Oost-erzee train station.Luciano was crossing the footbridge to-

wards nearby The Settlers High Schoolwhen he saw a man in his “early 20s sit-ting on a ledge just below the school’ssports grounds”.As he passed, the man mumbled some-

thing, but Luciano kept walking.“A few steps ahead something told me

to turn around and I saw that themanwasapproachingmeholding a 750 ml beer bot-tle.

Bleeding severely“He had the look of a mad man and at

that stage I realised that I was going to bea victim of a robbery and started to run,but I tripped and fell,” Luciano said.“I tried to get up, but he grabbedme and

hit the bottle on my forehead.”The bottle broke and the man tried to

stab Luciano with the broken bottleneckin his hand.“With full force I tried to knock the bot-

tle out of his hand. I was bleeding severely

and thought he had cut my one eye openas I could not see anything,” Luciano said. While screaming for help and fighting

with the man, peoplestarted appearingfrom the station tosee what was hap-pening, “but just tobe spectators of acruel attack”, Luci-ano said.

TraumaThe owner of a

guest house aroundthe corner from theparking lot where hewas attacked, helped Luciano and ban-dages his head.He was then taken to the Mediclinic

Louis Leipoldt and treated for cuts, grazesand “lots of bruising”.Hewanted toknowwhatwasbeingdone

to ensure the safety of commuters and pe-destrians using that footbridge and path-way.“I am still fighting the trauma of an ‘un-

necessary’ incident – should there havebeen a permanent security officer in thatparking lot,” he said.According to VRCID Chief Operations

OfficerDerekBock, the train station isnota part of their patrolling area.“The Oosterzee station falls outside our

area of coverage.Metrorail ensures the se-curity and safety at their stations. Wework together with them at the Bellvilletrain station,” he said.

Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott re-plied to a media enquiry stating: “We sin-cerely regret that (Luciano) had to suffer

such an ordeal.“Both the head of

Metrorail ProtectionServices as well as theCommander of the po-lice’s Rail Rapid Re-sponse Unit have beenrequested to investi-gate this matter as nosuch incident appearto have been reported.”Scott said Luciano

may yet be contactedfor more information

or for a statement.

Reporting“Criminal incidents within rail pre-

cincts are monitored daily and sharedwith the police – this strategy has resultedin increased arrests and amarked declinein reported incidents,” Scott said.“We encourage commuters to report all

suspicious behaviour and actual inci-dents immediately to ensure that the po-lice and our protection service teams de-ploy their collective resources judicious-ly.”During a follow up with Luciano, he

confirmed he had not yet reported the at-tack.“I haven’t reported or made a case. I am

recuperating well, but the horror still lin-gers in my mind from time to time,” hesaid.

Applications are open for NGOs andshelters working with street people toapply for aid from the City of Cape

Town to copewith the expected influx of indi-viduals seeking shelter during winter. The City of Cape Town’s social develop-

ment andearly childhooddevelopmentdirec-torate is finalising the preparations for itsannual winter street people programmeThe City has more than doubled its availa-

ble budget for the programme this year, in-creasing the allotted funds from R280 000 in2014 to just over R600 000 this year. The aid,in the form of food, blankets, mattresses andtoiletries, is distributed in partnership withthe disaster riskmanagement centre and theWestern Cape government’s department ofsocial development.Bed space at shelters is funded via the pro-

vincial government and the City liaises withthem regarding the additional demand onbed space during this period. In 2014, a totalof 16 organisations qualified for aid.“We have already started procuring the

goods and we are now finalising the applica-tion process forNGOs and other civic organi-sationswhowould like to apply for aid. Thereis an application form that stipulates the cri-teria organisations need to meet as well asthe supporting documentation they need toprovide.Oncewehave received the applicati-ons, we will conduct site visits to ensure theinformation provided is correct, because wehave to follow due process and ensure thatpublic funds are spent responsibly,” says Su-

zette Little, mayco member for social deve-lopment and early childhood development.Applicants must be registered as non-go-

vernmental or non-profit organisations, ha-ve facilities where people can overnight andcomply with health and safety regulations.According to Little, the City will continue

its interventions aimed at reintegratingstreet people and preventing more peoplefrom migrating to the streets. This includesoutreach programmes by social developmentdepartment field workers who provide assis-tance to those who require emergency ac-commodation, socialwork services and reha-bilitation services by directing them to oneof the assessment centres across the city.In December, the City also launched its

reintegration unit, specifically tasked withhelping street people return to their commu-nities of origin if they so choose.“Wearededicating significant resources to

ensuring that our street people arewell caredfor this winter, but I appeal to them to makeuse of the shelters and assistance that is avai-lable.“I also want to renew my appeal to mem-

bers of the public to rather make a tangibledifference in the lives of street people by gi-ving responsibly and supporting a local shel-ter or NGO, or giving a street person in theirarea a hand up instead of a hand-out as thelatter simply perpetuates the cycle of depen-dence and aggressive begging,” says Little.V Applications for aid close on Friday 29 May andforms are available online at http://goo.gl/9zq3Cp.

cently to discuss a smoother call-in processand was told officials “need the correct in-formation as they receivemany false calls”.Hewas suppliedwith a call-out sheet con-

when calling in an emergency:V Caller’s name and a contact number of

the person on the scene;

Learners at Riverside College in Burgun-dy Estate had “babies” to teach themabout the responsibilities of being par-

ents.Learners from Grade 8 to 12 took part in

the project in which they carried around2,5kg bags of flour which represented theirinfants. The bags of flour were carried around by

the learners and they also took them home.Instructions were sent via SMS and thelearner had to reply to confirm that he or shehas taken care of the baby.School principal Dave Swart says the

project was designed to simulate the real lifeunpredictability of caring for babies.“Babies don’t cry or get sick according to

a schedule. Byusing textmessages thatweresent at random times, we could replicate areal life scenario – the novelty of having anew born baby quickly wears off when it’swaking you up for a feed at 3:00 and thenagain at 4:30 because it has colic,” says

Swart.Learners at the school say the experience

has shown them how big a responsibility ababy is.“This project was a realistic simulation of

having a real baby. It was a good experienceto show how our lives are affected by havinga baby in school. Not only did it affect ourstudy life but also our recreational life. I willkeep that experience for some time in thedistant future,” said Grade 12 learner Mick-ey Kruger.ThimnaRapiya, anotherGrade 12 learner,

echoes what Kruger says. “This project hastaught me a lot about the responsibilities ofbeing a teenage parent, financially and emo-tionally. I realise now even more, that hav-ing a baby will impact my life greatly andthe baby’s too,” she said. The whole process was tiring for Grade 8

Alister Stewart. “It taught me respect. I donot think that I am ready to have a baby. Iwill savemyself forwhen I amready to sharemy life with someone else and then havechildren,” he says.Grade 8 Zoe McConachie said it was the

longest ten days of her life. “I real-ised that you don’t just make a ba-by and then make it work. It takesplanning and hard work. I willwait until I am much older.”Examples of the SMSs that were

sent include:. Sent at 11pm: Your baby needs

a nappy change (reply to confirmaction)

. Sent at 1.30am: It’s feed andburp time (reply to confirm ac-tion)

. Sent at 2.45am: Your baby iscrying non-stop (reply to confirmaction)

. Sent at 5am: It’s feed time andburp time (reply to confirmaction)

Debbie Schäfer sê as ’n ouer en minister

“Vanjaar is reeds nege oproepe

ontvang.

I have a serious concern withregards to what is aimed to beachieved with the new roadtraffic draft regulations andquestion whether in fact thesewere based on an objective atall. The facts are that ourroads are becoming increasing-ly dangerous because ofundisciplined drivers. Regula-tions decreasing speed limitswill not change discipline.

I am 66-years-old and remem-ber a time when there was noway that anyone would set footon a freeway. The reason beingthat there was at least a 75%chance that you would be‘caught’ resulting in seriousrepercussions. Livestockwandering on a nationalhighway would be impoundedif not eliminated in the inter-est of not endangering humanlife. I remember delaying a tripplanned on a Saturday to aMonday as I could not get atail light on my car to work. IfI had not done so there wasagain a 75% chance that Iwould have been caught andwould have suffered seriousconsequences.

We are a country with ahigh unemployment rate. Please consider creatingemployment opportunities byputting sufficient numbers of(uncorrupted) law enforcementofficers on the road with theright authority/power to dealwith undisciplined users. Whatis the point of displaying a100km/hr sticker on the backof your overloaded publicvehicle and travelling at140km/hr on a freeway in thefast lane and then suddenlybraking to veer off to the leftto stop and allow passengers todisembark on the same free-way? If the people ‘designing’these draft regulations havenot experienced this or similarissues perhaps they are not theright people in charge of thedepartment.

Please don’t make or intro-duce regulations and laws just

Die Metro Evangelical Ser-vices (MES) in Bellvillehet verlede Woensdag sy

Van 09:00 tot 13:00 is daar elkeuur ’n goed geoliede toer deuronderskeie MES-werknemersen rolspelers by hul fasiliteitein Meathstraat 7, Oakdale aan-gebied.

Die onderskeie aanbiedershet verduidelik hoe hulle by dietalle opheffingsprogramme vanMES inskakel.

Cancer goes beyond kidsMAGRIET THERON

@magrietron

A family is diagnosed with childhoodcancer, not just the child.

These are the words of Vanessa Ver-maak, Western Cape regional manager ofCHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA.

CHOC is one of the three beneficiaries ofthis year’s Want ons Kan!/’Cause we Can!charity concert, takingplace at the endof Ju-ly. TygerBurger is the event media sponsor.

CHOC was established in 1979 when agroup of parents with children sufferingfromcancer and other life-threatening blooddisorders decided to start a support group.

In the 36 years since, CHOC has grown in-to a country-wide charity that looks after theemotional andpractical needs of entire fami-lies where children are diagnosed with can-cer, without any government support.

CHOC is involved with the whole familyfrom the diagnosis of cancer until the out-come, which, if detected early, is completelycured in 85% of cases.

“We take as much stress off the family aspossible,” says Vermaak.

“Treatment is a very long process and inthe majority of the families one of the par-ents will lose their job in order to be withthe sick child,” she says.

“In Cape Town we work mostly with theacademically linked hospitals: Tygerberg,Red Cross and Groote Schuur, because theyhave paediatric oncology units, so we do notneed funding for medication. But often afamily will be sent here from as far as theEastern Cape for tests and the doctor will di-agnose the child and say: ‘you have cancerand you have to start treatment today’. Thatfamily is completely unprepared. They comeherewith nothing and then they have to stayfor at least three to six months.”

CHOC owns ten houses and three lodgesthroughout South Africa where children

and a parent can stay forthe duration of treatment.Everything that comeswith the lodging is free, from food and toiletries tohospital transport andprogrammes with thechildren and parents.

CHOC in Cape Townalone has a R3.8 millionannual budget, but likeany charity they still haveto go out and raise money,Vanessa says.

“We get funding fromordinary people, localbusinesses and schoolsthat support us and thishas been going on for 36years, this is what kept usgoing, but we constantlyhave to cut back on pro-jects to make ends meet.”

CHOC gets some Lottofunding to cover salaries, rent and petrol.

“So every cent the public gives us goes di-rectly to the families and the treatment cen-tres and educational and awareness pro-grammes,” Vanessa says.

She says many projects had to be cut backseriously in the new financial year due tobudget constraints.

Early detection is essential, which is whyCHOC emphasises awareness programmes.

“In the last two weeks we lost five chil-dren. This weekwe had to send a child homebecause it was too late to do anything.

“The majority of deaths are unnecessary. If it was caught early enough it could havebeen cured and that is what frustrates us.”

In SouthAfrica one in 600 children is diag-nosed before the age of 16, but according toVanessa, that is only half the children thatshould be diagnosed.

Because the symptoms are so similar to

other diseases it is often missed. For manyyears, the basic symptoms of childhood can-cer were not included in the nursing diplo-ma or basic medical degree.

“So we have thousands of doctors in thiscountry that do not know what to look for.”

In the last three years CHOC has trained11 000 medical professionals and 3 000 tradi-tional healers on basic warning signs andwhat to dowhenyou spot them.Themessageto parents is to trust your intuition when achild is not well.

She says the image of a little white childwith no hair and a bandana is just not thereality of childhood cancer. Instead, the ill-ness is completely representative of theSouth African population.

This disease levels you. You are the sameas anybody else, it does not discriminate be-tween race and economic status. It just ran-dom it will affect anybody,” she says.

Keemo, the CHOC mascot, visits children with childhood cancer inhospital.

A host of local artists will perform inaid of Project Dignity, FisantekraalCentre for Development and CHOCChildhood Cancer Foundation at Bell-ville Civic Theatre on Sunday 26 July.

They’ll be performing at the annualWant ons Kan/’Cause we Can! concertwhich raises funds for local organisa-tions.Now in its 13th year, the concert, for which TygerBurger is the mediasponsor, has already generated morethan R2 million in donations.

This year Zanne Stapelberg, NicoNel, Jak de Priester and Altus Muller,Anna Davel, Mathys Roets and Jaco-nell Mouton (piano), Marc Lottering,Wicus van der Merwe, Peter Mitchell,Schalk Joubert (bass), Luna Paige (vo-cals and piano), Vernon Swart(drums), Corlea, Andre and The Swin-gers, David Kramer, Dewald Wasserf-all, Dowwe Dolla, Pedro Kruger, Hi-ram Koopman, Albert Frost and ArnoCarstens will be performing, with Tra-cey Lange and Hannes van Wyk asMCs.

Africa CodeWeek is a one-of-a-kind educati-onal initiative to be piloted at theCapeTownScience Centre from 30 May to 4 June. The pilot eventwill provide the opportuni-

ty of free Train-the-Trainer workshops andfree coding (computer programming) work-shops for children between the ages of 8 and11.Coding is the literacy of the digital age and

the best way for young children to becomefluent is to learn and play. While technologyis transforming education and learners le-arnhow touse it, the reality is that they rare-ly learn how it works. As a language, codinghelps make sense of how things work, explo-res ideas and how to make things. Every in-teraction between humans and computers isgovernedby code. Programming is thereforefundamental to the understanding of howtechnology works.“Importantly coding contributes to deve-

loping key skills in mathematics and pro-blem solving in the classroom environment,

it also encourages teamwork and analyticalthinking, all essential 21st Century skills forour youth,” reiterated Julie Cleverdon, di-rector of the Science Centre in Cape Town. The Cape Town Science Centre is calling

on all teachers, parents, students, corpora-tes, government, NGOs, educational institu-tions andother interested parties, to send re-presentatives to attend the free Train-the-Trainer workshops, which will preparethem to implement coding workshops forchildren.A Train-the-Trainer workshop, designed

Hemelbesem, of SimonWitbooi soos sy reg-

Reis“Die Afrikaansvatter gaan oor my reis as

vaar, asook nuwe woorde, nuwe sêgoed ennuwe stellings leer.”YOMA, Linkris, Babette Viljoen, Gareth

Kaartjies virdie eenaand-vertoning kos R60 en is by Com-puticket beskikbaar.

RUNNING: INAUGURAL ONERUN WINNERS JUST A SECOND OFF THE WORLD RECORD

Photo finish at 10km

Kenya’s Emmanuel Bett and Daniel Salel fought to the line at the FNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN onSunday, 17 May 2015. The decision, after much deliberation, going the way of Bett in a time of 33minutes and 32 seconds (33:32). PHOTO: VOLUME PHOTOGRAPHY

It was the perfect way to get the inauguralFNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN off theground. A dip on the finish line and miss-

ing the world’s best by one second.Kenya’s Emmanuel Bett and Daniel Salel

fought to the finish line with the decision, after much deliberation, going the way ofBett in a time of 33 minutes and 32 seconds(33:32). Salel recorded the same time.In near perfect conditions, the race got un-

derway in Milnerton at 9:00. The country’stop 10 men and women were competingagainst the likes of Daniel Salel, EmmanuelBett, Moses Kipsiro and Vivian Cheruiyot.Within the first 2km it was evident this

was to be a hard and fast race. EmmanuelBett, who has run a 27:51:16 over 10 000m,was in no mood for a bunch finish and seta blistering pace from the start. Within 2kmthe lead group of twenty plus had been whit-tled down to eight, with Bett setting the paceand Salel running next to him with Kipsiro,Timothy Toroitich , Elroy Gelant, GladwinMzazi and Lucky Mohale sitting on theirtails.By 3kmMohalehadbeenblownaway.Bett

continued to race at 2:47/km (2 minutes 47seconds) pace which saw first GladwinMza-zi drop off (around 4km just before the raceentered the harbour). Gelant was to fadefrom the leading pack shortly thereafter, and when Kipsiro dropped just before the

halfway mark, it was down to three.Bett was not going to slow down despite

the onset of nausea at around the 6kmmark.As they entered Government Avenue at thetop of Adderley Street (9km), there was still

no splitting Toroitich, Salel and Bett. The10km mark was passed in 27:48 and the racefor a world record was on.Not even the short but sharp climb up

Buitengracht Street separated the trio, but

the climb lost the leaders some valuable sec-onds as they chased the record and huntedfor the win. With just over 1km to go, Bett and Salel

upped the pace and Toroitich fell off. Therace for first place went to the line as bothSalel andBettwere awarded the time of 33:32– just one second off the world record, theofficials giving Bett the nod.Timothy Toroitich finished third and Mo-

ses Kipsiro fourth, with the first South Afri-can home being Elroy Gelant in fifth.“I’m very happy with my run today,” said

Bett. “I have had some injury problems inthe last few years, so this show’s me I’m ingood shape and getting back to where I was.I will be competing in the Prefontaine Clas-sic on 30 May in the 10 000m and then theKenyan trials. Iwant to qualify for theWorldChampionships”.Gelant was ecstatic after his fifth place.

“My hamstring is now all good. This was ahard race. The Kenyans were really flying, but I am very happy”.The women’s race saw four-time world

champion and Olympic silver and bronzemedallist Vivian Cheruiyot break away justbefore half way.She crossed the line in 38:32. Yenenesh Ti-

lahun of Ethiopiawas second (39:17)withLe-bo Phalula the first South African home in(39:21).

SAREL BURGER

aksie is, se program (tuisspan eerste) is:SirLowrians tDurbell, Primrose tBelhar,Unie-Milnerton t Macassar, Brackenfell tCollegians, Franschhoek t Bellville,Hands & Heart t Violets, Kuilsrivier t Yo-ung Peoples.
