CULTURE: LIBRARY WINS TWICE IN A ROW
Best with booksGARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
When it comes to good service theAdriaanse Library inElsies River ismaking us proud.
For the second year in a row the libraryhas won a major award at the Departmentof Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) annualWestern Cape Cultural Affairs Awards cere-mony.The team from the library scooped up the
award for Best Medium Public Library atthe Baxter Theatre on 9 February, an awardwhich they also garnered last year.
Profound impactSince its inception in 1999, DCAS has
awarded various organisations and individ-ualswhomadeaprofound impact in thearts, culture, language, heritage, museum, ar-
chives, geographical names and librariessectors in the province.Senior librarian Wilhelmina Whitman
was very proud of the award and had lots ofpraise for her team at the library.
Passion for books“To win this award for the second time in
a row is very exciting,” she says.“But, youmust remember that it is a team
effort and I am lucky to have a team that ispassionate about providing good service tothe community.“Westrive tomakeeverybodyawareof the
services we provide beyond the books, butour focus is always the power and impor-tance of reading.”Frank Stoffberg is a regular at the library
and says he always enjoyed his visits there.“You know I am a member at 17 libraries,
but this is the best,” he said enthusiastically.
“I am involved with chess activities so Ihave to go around to them but I am alwaysimpressed when I come here.“There’s always a buzz of activity, the li-
brarians are among us helping learners, having a chat with the seniors and makingus feel at home.
Well deserved“They deserve this award and if they keep
up this standard they must just give it tothem permanently.”Frank Julie of the YoungPeople@Work or-
ganisation also congratulates them on win-ning the award for best medium library inthe Western Cape.“We are truly honoured to be a part of the
success of the library under the outstandingand humble leadership of WilhelminaWhit-man,”he said.

There’s a new chief in com-mand at Belville South PoliceStation with the appoint-ment of Lieutenant-ColonelKaren Versatz as stationcommander.
This new appointment ispart of a journey that startedin the 1990s while growing upin Steenberg and having apassion for making a differ-ence in her neighbourhood.
“I was not happy with thegrowing crime around meand felt that I could be partof that change by joining thepolice force,” she said.
Her passion for the policeled to attending college andrising up the ranks to eventu-ally become a captain andstation commander in Rondebosch, but thatjourney did not stop there.
As a Lieutenant-Colonel she was appoint-ed as visible policing head in Mfuleni anda stint as station commander in Belhar be-
fore coming to Bellville South. She is excited about this new move and
already working to improve the services ofthe police in the area.
“A lot of problem areashave been brought to my at-tention and that is what wewant to concentrate on forthe safety of the residents.”
“Robberies and theft, many from cars and prop-erty, are a major concernbut we want to build uppartnerships with people tohelp them to play a biggerpart in keeping the areasafe.
“We want them to realisehow they can be our eyesand ears to make that dif-ference even when it comesto the major problem ofcopper theft.
“You know when youneighbour starts burning those cables intheir yards and if you don’t report it you’recondoning their crime.”
Versatz also wants to focus on drug abuseand shebeens in the area.
“These factors also play a major part inour fight against crime because many of theassaults that are reported have their rootsin drug and alcohol abuse.
“The need to finance these habits alsoplay a big part in the robbery and thefts andthe dealers who accept this stolen propertymust also be brought to book.”
With her staff at the station they have al-ready started working on building partner-ships in the area.
“We are moving away from meetings ina hall or office,” she continues.
“There are some exciting times ahead aswe take to the streets to inform people andfind out what their problems are.
“We recently held a very successful Imbi-zo where we went into a neighbourhoodstreet by street, gathered people in a centralplace and listened to what they had to say,and explained the role that they could playin partnership with us.
“This will be an on-going exercise andpeople will start believing that the policecan be more effective in their fight againstcrime.
“I look forward to this new challenge andknow that we are ready to make BellvilleSouth safer.”

Kleinvlei police this week issued a list ofsafety tips for residents to ensure their safe-ty and security.
Warrant Officer Annacletta Mothoalo, po-lice spokesperson, said the police and localcommunity police forum have recentlybeen inundated with dockets regardinghousebreakings and car hijackings in theEerste River and Kleinvlei area.
“Most of the hijackings occur along OldFaure Road and Blueberry Hill,” Mothoalosaid. They have also received reports of peo-ple in the bushes in the area.
“We would like to warn people who fre-quent the area not to stop and park their ve-hicles there,” she said, “prostitutes workalong this stretch of road.”
She said often people are lured to an iso-lated spot. “On their arrival at the spot theprostitute’s ‘security guards’ attack and robthem.”
With regards to housebreaking, Mothoalosaid often the police find that people opentheir windows when leaving for work. “Thisis how criminals gain access.”
Criminals like to take advantage of suchopportunities, she said.
Mothoalo warned residents to alwayslight up their houses at night, lock theirdoors and contact the police when they no-tice something suspicious.
“Make your house appear occupied andso make it difficult for criminals,” she said.

Keeping fit is becoming a priority for ladiesin Belhar.
The Belhar Ladies Fitness and WalkingClub was formed in May 2010 and initiallyoperated informally, arranging fun walks, talent shows and similar activities in theBelhar community.
Founder member Cathy Payle said itaimed to provide the community with sus-tainable fitness and wellness activities topromote a health-conscious way of living.
“It was initiated in a community that facesmany social evils such as gangsterism, drugand substance abuse, unemployment, lowacademic achievement levels, crime andpoverty,” she says.
“Initially being affiliated to the BelharNeighbourhood Development Forum, I soonrealised the club had to venture on its ownin order to achieve the objectives it had setfor itself and make a meaningful impact.”
In 2013 the Club was approached by theCity of Cape Town’s Sports and RecreationDepartment to formalise their activities.
“The allegiance with the City had severaladvantages,” continues Payle.
“The Huguenot Hall in Belhar Drive wasoffered to the club free of charge twice aweek (Tuesday and Thursday evenings be-tween 17:30 and 19:00). This hall has the ca-pacity to house up to 100 members perform-ing their activities.
“They (the City) was also very accommo-dating in their sponsorship of basic sportsequipment such as exercise mats, exerciseballs, steppers and various other smallitems.”
She also added that with specific outingsand events the City of Cape Town wouldsponsor transport facilities to an extent andeven contribute to prize-givings and awardevenings.
The club currently offers its gym and exer-cise routines to approximately 85 ladies persession and the aim is to incorporate and ac-commodate more ladies and girls above theage of 12 in the community.
The rationale is that women form theheart of the home and that sustainablechange in homes would start where womenare assisted and encouraged to followhealthy lifestyles.V For more information about the club Cathy Paylecan be contacted on 084 070 2718 or email cathy[email protected].

Police contain court crowdBellville police had their hands full on Tues-day afternoon with a rowdy crowd of sup-porters after the so-called poo protesters’ ca-se appeared in the Magistrate’s court.
Several vans kept a close watch on the pla-card-toting crowd supporting the nine accu-sed, including Andile Lili and Loyiso Nkoh-la of the Ses’Khona People’s Rights Move-ment.
“The supporters walked out of the cour-troom and dispersed into the streets of Bell-ville,” said Bellville police spokespersonCaptain Fienie Nimb.
“They blocked all routes and there wasloud singing. One of our helicopters roamedthe central business district. The last wesaw, the supporters were heading in that di-rection,” Nimb said at 14:10.
She said their office and law enforcementpartners were closely monitoring the situa-tion.
“There was extra deployment of membersboth inside and outside the court. They hada mass meeting, then started making theirway to the Bellville railway station withtheir placards,” she said.
Nimb denied shots had been fired, butsaid water cannons and thunderclaps hadbeen used to contain the crowd. At least 10police vans were parked near the BellvilleRailway Station.
The case against the accused had beenpostponed until 16 April.
The other seven accused of throwing hu-man waste at the Cape Town InternationalAirport on 25 June 2013, are Yanga Mjing-wana, Ben Dyani, Jaji Diniso, Bongile Zana-zo, Thembela Mabanjwa, Bantubakhe Mgo-bodiya en Wandisile Mkapa.
At a previous court appearance, the poli-ce force had to be called in as well to disper-se the crowd.

of a young girl facing the challenges of ridi-cule, bullying and prejudice at school yet ri-ses to the top despite all these obstacles. For the launch at The Fountain Centre in
Northway Street, Ravensmead on FridayLendy has partnered with friends to presenta musical theatre production of some of theelements of the book. She has collaborated with Chase Downes
a UCT drama graduate, community activist, writer andpoet fromOceanViewandGospelgroup Tomorrow’s World in Christ for thisperformance.“I am very excited about this project to
launch the book,” she said.“Working with Chase, who plays the lead
role, has added to my writing and the musicalso makes a big difference.”Lendy said the book is a personal reflecti-
on of growing up in the area.“Fromprimary school to high school Iwas
called ugly because I am black and had athick Afro hair,” she says.“Everyday the learners made it known to
me how different I looked but what theydidn’t know is that I had a vision. My visionwas different from most of them.“My English teacher discovered these
gifts in me when I was in grade 10 at Raven-smead High School. She encouraged me topursue higher education at UCT but sheknew very well that financially I was notable to get there but still encouraged me re-ach for my dreams.”Lendy pointed out that the other aims of
her book are to:V Create awareness to parents of what
their children go through at schools.V That it is not only about the course you
study at school but in yourGod given talentsand a strong conviction to pursue somethingyou reach greater heights.
V Encourage people to find inner strengthregardless of socio-economic background
V Encourage youngsters who have beenbullied and have struggled to cope amongtheir peers and in their academic life.

Die taakspan was heelte-mal buite orde.

Clifton Swartz is on a mission to serve anace against negative influences for youth intheWestern Cape - andmaybe produce a fu-ture Wimbledon winner. As head of Catiza Training and Skills De-
velopment he has the ambitious vision tointroduce tennis into underprivilegedschools and communities and has put toge-ther a project plan that will guide the pro-cess.Rural and farm schools and communities
will form an integralpart of this plan.“The culture of sport
and recreation of the’60s, ’70s and ’80s indis-advantaged schoolsand communities havegradually been repla-ced by the current spa-te of crime-related andunsocial behaviouramong our young peo-ple,” he says.“The lack of vision
and dreams, the heavypressure on youth byfamily, peers and un-desirable elements inour communities putspressure onyoungpeo-ple, boys and girls, togive up on their dre-ams and become partof a statistic of the elements of social ills.“Various factors have over the years contri-buted to convincing our youth that it is‘cool’ to behave unsociably. Communitieshave to deal with the challenges of moraldecay and a range of socio-economic issuessuch as joblessness, poverty, slow econo-mic development and crime.“Our youth are lured by gangswith artifi-
cial, material bait to becomeactive in crimeand drugs because ‘it pays’. Cellphones, branded clothing, money, and drugs areused tomotivate young boys to get involvedin gangsterism, and it is flourishing.“The monster drug tik is destroying our
youngsters and the impact on family and
community life is devastating. The ages ofdrug users and youngsters joining gangs isgetting younger resulting in learners drop-ping out of school.“Schools have become unsafe and are
slowly developing into gangster territo-ries.”Clifton,whohas vast experience in sports
management and community developmentwants to use tennis to tackle these pro-blems.He is a professional tennis coach and ITF
Level 2 coach and has obtained the SwedishTrain-the-Trainer qualification; he played,
coached and administe-red the game at various le-vels.Clifton also managed
provincial and nationalteams to national, conti-nental and internationaltournaments and eventsand has attended nume-rous world coaching anddevelopment conferences.“Our aims are to train
and equip youth and adulttennis enthusiasts withtennis playing, basic coa-ching and administrativeskills that will assist andenable them to play, im-plement and manage ten-nis programmes thatkindle ‘appetite’ and roll-out of the sport to the com-munities in a fun, recrea-
tional, enjoyable, professional and sustai-nable manner,” he says.“The programmewill consist ofmini-ten-
nis in primary schools, a high school tennisleague and free adult team tennis training.”The programme already started in the
first week of February with clinics and coa-ching sessions at theAthloneTennisCourtsand at schools inAthlone, and they are alre-ady identifying other areas like Bonteheu-wel, Kraaifontein and Crossroads.V If you are interested in becoming part of this project in your neighbourhood contact Clifton on 083269 6794 or 021 697 0779 or 021 696 7935, email:[email protected], facebook: www.facebook.com/catizaskills.

Destyds is daar elke driemaandeNagmaal
The Equilibrium organisation is gi-ving youth an opportunity to disco-ver their worth in the workplace as
interns for community work.Based at The Range Senior Secondary
School in Elsies River, they have 20 in-terns taking part in a programme thatprovides unemployed youth with a op-portunity to earn a stipend and to per-form community work.
Yolanda Groep fromEquilibrium explained thatthey were working with aDurban based companywith links to the NationalYouth Development Agency(NYDA).
“Through our contactswith NGO networks we ap-proached them with ouraims for youth and weresuccessful with our applica-tion,” she said.
Life skills“In December the call
went out to matriculants in differentschools to register in 2015 if they are stillunemployed.
“We were able to secure place for 22 in-terns but we hope to expand on this pro-ject and invite unemployed youth to con-tact us or to visit our offices at The Ran-ge.”
She also pointed out that the learnerssigned a three month contract to rendercommunity work under the supervisionof Equilibruim.
“They are required to receive life skillsand technical training and receive amonthly stipend of R1500 directly fromthe NYDA,
“Although the stipend is not muchthey are afforded an opportunity to earnsome money, receive training and servetheir communities.
“We have the support of local council-lors Chris Jordaan and Michael Britswho have afforded these interns with theopportunity to receive ongoing trainingthrough the Youth Development Pro-grams of the City of Capetown.
New opportunities“Our local libraries, El-
sies River and Adriaanse ha-ve opened their doors for in-terns to complete communi-ty services.
“Some of them will also beplaced in schools as supportpresenting awareness sessi-ons on substance abuse, bul-lying, teenage pregnanciesas well as after school extra-mural activities.
“Communicare in Ruyter-wacht will enrol interns fora basic computer course freeof charge.
“We want to thank all the-se partners for providing youth with newopportunities, a sense of purpose, rene-wed confidence especially for the matri-culans who failed, as they are encoura-ged to rewrite.
Equilibruim wants to encourage theunemployed youth to approach their offi-ces at The Range to guide, assist, linkthem with possible opportunities.
“We are currently busy negotiating tohave the three month contract extendedto a year and to have the interns assessedin order to secure job placements forthem,” concluded Groep.V For more information about the project call 021931 7745 or 072 590 3887.

A women’s shelter in Matroosfontein needsto move to new premises.
Edwina Steneberger has been running theHouse to your Destiny shelter for abusedwomen and children from her family homefor the past three years but now needs to findother premises to serve as their base.
“There are personal reasons why we haveto find other premises,” she explained.
“But, the move is also important for us tobe in a new place so that we can improve andexpand our services.”
She said women at risk are referred tothem by various social services and the po-lice, and stay for up to six months.
“It’s not just about giving them shelter
from abuse but also empowering them to in-dependence so that they are not susceptibleto more abusive relationships in their future.
“We’re also a vital part of their supportbase after they leave so a permanent facilitywill allow us to expand these services.
“During their stay here we offer a numberof classes and business courses to help themget employment but we cannot do that with-out volunteers who are prepared to help withclasses or to serve on the managing commit-tee to help us raise funds for our projects.”
Edwina said if somebody had a suitablehouse to rent or sponsor it did not have tobe in the Matroosfontein area.
“We will go to any area.”V For more information about the shelter Edwina canbe contacted on 073 501 3932 or email housetoyour[email protected].

Castle (148*) moker6 sesse in boulbeurt!SAREL BURGER
GF Linde (53*) was saammet Castle dieDurbies se steunpilare. In Noordelikes-Goodwood (172/5 gesl.) se

pies oor D.F. Malan seJ.

Siphumelele Primary School was the winner of the South African leg of the 2014 Danone Nations Cup which saw them play in the the 2014Danone World Finals in Brazil. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
If you think your primary school’s foot-ball team has what it takes to be the bestin the country, then you have to enter
the 2015 Danone Nations Cup.Primary schools across the country are
invited to be part of the biggest footballtournament for kids between 10 and 12-years-old.A total of 32 countries have started the
gruelling qualifiers to identify their teamto compete in the World Finals in Moroccolater this year. Registration has openedand all primary schools have until Friday27 February register. The competition is run under the flag of
the South African Schools Football Associ-ation (SASFA) and the Department of Ba-sic Education. Games will begin at clusterlevel immediately after registration closes. The winners will progress to regional fi-nals, culminating in the nine provincialwinners playing in the national finals todetermine the national champion school.“Through the Danone Nations Cup we
are reaching kids at a crucial age,” saidDanone spokespersonChantel Ehlers. “Weare passionate about making a differenceto people’s lives and our mission is ‘bring-ing health through food to as many peopleas possible,’ which we are achievingthrough this tournament.”Both the 2014 winners (Siphumelele Pri-
mary School from Inanda in KwaZulu-Na-tal) and runners-up (Farrarmere PrimarySchool from Boksburg, Gauteng) will beback in action again this year.ForSiphumelele there are only fourposi-
tions that need to be filled as the rest of the2014 winning team will be back in actionagain this year. Teammanager EmmanuelMkhize said the trip to Brazil last year hadan immeasurable impact on the lives of theplayerswhowent, whichwill help the team
this year.“The trip to Brazil to compete in the
world finals has opened the eyes of everyplayer. Theyknow there are endless oppor-tunities awaiting them and I can see theirconfidence and fighting spirit has im-proved dramatically. All this helps in theirapproach to the game this year,” saidMkhize. “Theyhave learnt youcanachieveanything if you put your mind and energyto it and remain focused.”The specialist coach who took the team
to Brazil last year has left and the schoolcoach, Jabulani Mkhize, will take charge.“The kids know him well and are used tohis coaching style so it will not make a dif-
ference,” said Mkhize.Tebogo Ngakane, manager of the Far-
rarmere team, is also confident that hisschool can win the tournament this year.He admits that being part of the DanoneNations Cup last year was an incrediblelearning experience for the kids.“We were proud of the team to have
reached the national finals the first time– and coming second was the cherry on thecake. But that was last year and we havean excellent team again that I know can dothe job,” he said.“We have also brought in a new coach,
Pride Moeketsi Morosi, who has a UEFAB license, and a load of experience to go
with it to help us.”Unlike Siphumelele, Ngakane said that
the entire 2014 teamhas progressed to highschool so it will be a new team competingthis year.“The under-10 team will be competing
this year and althoughwe still have to holdtrials to finalise the Danone Nations Cupteam, what I can say is that they have allplayed together for a number of years, which helps a lot.”V To enter your school in the 2015 Danone NationsCup contact Themba Tshabalala at themba.tsha[email protected] or on 084 290 0602. Two defeats in two weeks is about asmuch as Riverside Rangers players be-lieve they can take.
And when they take on FC Hout Bay Unit-ed in a SAB League match on Sunday at Av-onwood Park, it will be with the intentionof turning things around. The side started the new season brightly,
ensuring they got out of the relegation zone.Their unbeaten run was brought to an ab-
rupt end by Santos FC, agame they should have wonconsidering their domina-tion. Then the same ill luckfollowed them to Bridge-townSport Fields inAthlonewhere the beneficiarieswere Silver Spurs. But now the boys in red
want to make up for this. They believe they owe it tothe supporters who havestood by them through diffi-cult times through the firsthalf of the season.
Different combinationsCoach Leslie Mondo has been trying out
different combinations, some of which wereforced through injuries or suspensions. Hebelieves the team is not quite where hewants it to be, but is positive. He has givenmost of the players a run, and now the taskis to find that winning streak - the click thatwill unite them and turn them into a hard-playing unit.Fans have been urging the team to go out
and fight, and are still confident that thecoach is on the right track to getting River-side Rangers back to where it belongs at thetop. While many were disappointed by the
loss to Silver Spurs in particular, they werehappy with the way the team played.
Total focus“Weneed tomaintain total focus.Weknow
that we are not on a winning path but can’tafford to dwell on the past and still be lickingour wounds from the past two losses in theleague. We understand that this is footballand these things happen.’’The teamhave learnt from the past bad re-
sults andMondo says he knows exactly whyRiversideRangershavebeenfailing to win, adding thatthey have worked on theweaknesses.“We know why we didn’t
win our last two matches.Themanof thematch in bothgameswere goalkeepers, andif the opposition goalkeeperis voted man of the match, itmeans we were attackingand creating goal scoring op-portunities. We were deniedby some good goalkeeping.“We also have been very
unlucky in front of goals. There were situations, where we controlledplayandcouldhavewrappedupamatch ear-ly but could not finish.’’Mondo also pointed out that after every
match, they always make it a point of work-ing harder on the lacking areas from previ-ous matches.“At out training sessions, following a bad
result, wealwaysmake it apoint thatwe findways to rectify whatever might have gonewrong and continue working harder.’’Not underestimating the opponentMondo
was quick to point out that FC Hout BayUnited were a dangerous side that shouldnot be taken lightly.
