MILNERTON CLUSTER: POLICING NEEDS AND PRIORITIES HIGHLIGHTED
Challenges in clusterLOUISA STEYL
@lounotes
Domestic violence, alcohol and drugabuse, and high unemployment arejust some of the challenges police face
within the Milnerton Police Cluster. The Milnerton Cluster is made up of four
police stations: Milnerton, Table View,Melkbosstrand and Atlantis.
Speaking at a recent policing needs andpriorities public meeting, Stander pointedout that the cluster covers about 450 squarekilometres of very diverse areas which allhave different policing needs.
The meeting was hosted by the WesternCape Department of Community Safety toaddress the specific policing needs in theMilnerton cluster.
The four stations have receives a total of4000 complaints a month for the last fivemonths. With only 426 operational staff and118 support staff working in the area, Stand-er says: Acting cluster commander, Briga-dier Marius Stander says, “We have to de-ploy according to certain crime patterns.”
Statistics for the five month period indi-cate that Du Noon, which falls under Milner-ton Police Station, is a hot spot for attemptedmurder, especially over weekends.
Du Noon is also rife with incidents of ag-gravated robbery with most incidents occur-ring on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays andSaturdays between 18:00 to 21:00 or from21:00 till 24:00. Parklands, which falls underTable View Police station also has an prob-lems with aggravated robbery. Most report-ed incidents take place on Mondays, Satur-days and Sundays between 06:00 and 09:00 or18:00 and 21:00.
Burglaries are first on the list of crime sinDu Noon and Joe Slovo, especially on Fridaybetween 03:00 and 06:00, while Blouberg andWest Beach and the same problem on Sun-days between 21:00 and 24:00.
However, Stander pointed out that in gen-eral, the cluster has seen a significant de-crease of break-ins in recent months.
Table View Neighbourhood Watch(TVNW) chairperson, Robbie Keene calledon residents to help the TVNW by not leav-ing their wheelie bins out and not leavingfood for bin pickers. The wheelie bins canbe used by criminals to gain entry to housesby either using them to step on to enterthrough windows or by hiding in away fromview. Keene says criminals are also operat-ing in the area under the guise of bin pick-ers.

FROM PAGE 1Business robberies are a problem in Doorn-bach, Du Noon and Joe Slovo on Thursdays,Saturdays and Sundays between 09:00 and14:00 and again from 18:00 till 24:00.
Robberies are another common crime, particularly in Du Noon and Joe Slovo overweekends and on Mondays from 06:00 to09:00 and 18:00 and 21:00, as well as in Park-lands on Tuesdays and Saturdays during thesame times.
Get to know your neighboursMilnerton CPF chairperson, Karen Visag-
ie says a contributing factor to the high lev-els of crime in Du Noon and Joe Slovo is be-cause of over-population in these areas.
High population density and a lack of ba-sic needs fuels tension, but she also addedthat landlords are also to blame for squeez-ing too many people into small spaces or al-lowing backyard dwellings.
Keene also cites population density as acontributing factor to crime in Parklands, particularly along the main road, wherethere are many flats.
He pointed out that local police, securitycompanies and neighbourhood watchesdon’t have the authority to patrol inside thegates of some of these complexes.
He reckons the lower crime in other areasis due to the effectiveness of street commit-tees.
Keene and Visagie both believe that con-necting with neighbours makes a huge dif-ference in preventing crime before it hap-pens.
Keene says that burglars know how longa security company takes to reach yourproperty but have no idea when a neighbourmight pitch up.
Number one on his list of crime fightingtips is joining a street committee, which un-like joining the neighbourhood watch, doesn’t require members to patrol.
Street committee members are basicallythe eyes and ears of the street.
According to Stander’s report, domesticviolence, substance abuse and high unem-ployment are also among the biggest con-tributors to crime in the area.
Other factors are offenders being releasedon parole, gangsterism and the rate at whichthe area is growing.
Stander says the high number of spazashops and the wide diversity of people livingin the area (including low and high incomeareas as well as residential and business ar-eas) are challenging the local police.
“Spaza shops add to the imageof decayandxenophobia,” said Visagie, adding that she-beens are making alcohol abuse far too easy.
All these factors create a sense of apathy, making criminals feel that misdeeds won’t
be reported.
‘We must be like a Pick n Pay for thieves’Community involvement is a challenge
and Stander says the police needw tostrengthen their partnerships with local re-ligious leaders, the Department of Correc-tional Services and local organisations.
Stander urges residents to join their localneighbourhood watches and community po-licing forums.
“Partnerships in each policing area arevery important to address crime and othersocio-economic challenges,” he says.
Visagie points out that new neighbour-hood watches in Joe Slovo and Du Noon aremaking a difference in terms of changingmindsets around working together.
Keene also called on residents to help fightcrime by supporting local safety organisa-tions.
“A lot of the crime is created by the igno-rance of the residents,” he said, referring toresidents not using alarms or leaving theirvaluables on the seats of vehicles, “We mustbe like a Pick n Pay for thieves,” he says.
“I think Brigadier Stander’s report high-lights the need for everyone to become in-volved in some small way,” Visagie says.
“The police are understaffed and need theassistance of each person to do their bit tohelp reduce crime.”

Residents from across Table View andMilnerton came together last week totake a united stand against crime.
A meeting hosted by the Western Cape de-partment of community safety brought lo-cal police stations, community police fo-rums (CPFs) and interested organisationstogether to hear the findings of last year’spolicing needs and priorities (PNP) consul-tation process.
They also discussed current crime issuesand how to address them.
The meeting was held for the Milnerton
police cluster which includes Milnerton,Melkbosstrand, Table View, Atlantis andthe smaller areas in between.
The PNP meetings are being held acrossthe province. These meetings fall under apolicy framework which states that the na-tional policing policy must be determinedby taking provincial policing needs into ac-count. The idea is also to increase safety byconsolidating input from the whole commu-nity.
Speaking at the meeting, CPF ClusterChairperson Andrew Brace, said: “Youstart off fighting crime by helping yourneighbour.”
MEC for Community Safety, Dan Plato,
pointed out that the meeting offered a safeenvironment to raise concerns freely andsaid the department recognises that crimeis multifaceted, which is why a consultationprocess is needed to fight crime effectively.“Safety, and the need to feel safe is impor-tant,” Minister Plato said.
He added that it is important that limitedpolice resources are distributed where theyare needed most.
Residents at the meeting got a chance tocomplete a survey about how they are af-fected by crime. The results of this surveywill be available on the Western Cape Gov-ernment’s website at www.western-cape.gov.za by Wednesday 17 September.

Substance abuse is the biggest causeof crime in the Table View and Mil-nerton area.
This hard evidence was revealed in the2013/2014 policing needs and priorities(PNP) report for the Milnerton policecluster.
The report was presented at a meetinghosted by the Western Cape departmentfor Community Safety in Table View lastweek.
“Ladies and gentleman, drugs arewreaking havoc in our communities,”said MEC for community safety, Dan Pla-to at the meeting. The report outlines re-search relating to crime conducted in thearea last year. It gives an overview ofcrime in the Milnerton police clusterwhich includes Milnerton, Melk-bosstrand, Table View, Atlantis and thesmaller areas in between.
Drug use leads to crimeThe cluster covers 450 square kilome-
tres of very different areas, from town-ships and industrial areas, to commercialdistricts and suburban spaces. Actingcluster commander, Brigadier MariusStander, pointed out that these areas allrequire different types of policing.
The main concerns remain the same.Substance abuse tops the list of causeswith 33.58% of the residents interviewedidentifying the problem as the main causeof crime.
18.25 % of respondents identified unem-ployment as a major cause, while justover 7% felt that homelessness and va-grancy is the main problem. Just over 7%also felt that poverty is causing crime.
According to the report, the Milnertoncluster contributed 4% to provincialdrug-related crimes last year with themost widely-used drug being tik. The re-port also states that drug users are start-ing at increasingly younger ages.
Plato pointed to a strong correlation be-tween drug use and burglaries, domesticviolence, robberies and sexual offences.
“Societal problems cannot be the SAPS’problem alone,” he said, adding that par-ents need to help guide children on theright path.
“Parents need to raise the alarm whenthey suspect their childrenmaybegettinginvolved with gang-related activity anddrugs,” he said. Acting CPF cluster chair-person, Andrew Brace also pointed todrug use as the biggest problem in the ar-ea. He said the community have to fighttogether to resolve the issue.
According to the report, the most preva-lent crimes in the area are burglaries of
residential premises, theft out of motorvehicles, sexual offences and robbery.
In light of their findings, the depart-ment of community safety recommendedthat sector policing be implemented to im-prove police visibility in the area.
They also suggested that all street lightsshould be fixed and more installed andthat busy areas should be well main-tained to promote environmental cleanli-ness in the residential areas.
Working togetherThe report recommends that existing
bylaws should be enforced, especially interms of liquor by-laws. This issue wasfurther highlighted by Ward 4 councillor,Joy McCarthy, who requested that localpolice help enforce all the City of CapeTown’s by-laws.
The reported suggested that illegal she-beens and known drug dens be closeddown and that the public should be madeaware of the dangers of drug and alcoholabuse through more awareness cam-paigns.Other needs identified by resi-dents in the report include the buildingof sports and recreation facilities, partic-ularly in disadvantaged areas, to helpkeep children busy and off the streets.
Residents also called for homelessnessand vagrants in the area to be managedand for increased police visibility.
‘Drugs are the no 1 problem’

Historic imagery is interwoven withmodern concepts in Rehane Abra-hams’ What the Water Gave Me.
Directed by Table View’s Jade Bowers, this unusual piece will be on stage at CapeTown City Hall from Thursday 25 to Sunday28 September as part of the Cape TownFringe Festival.
While Rehane grew up in Retreat, it washer travels abroad that inspired the storieswhich became What the Water Gave Me.
It all started when she was leaving SanFrancisco in America in 1997 and a friendgave her a book on Navajo sandpainting.
The paintings are used during healingceremonies. Needing some healing herself,Rehane decided to try using the Navajo con-cept and drew a map of where she had beenand where she was going. The experienceturned into a “medicine play” where thestage became a sandpainting in the making.
After some time back in Cape Town, Re-hane travelled to England where she pulledout the map and started researching a play.
Her research let her to realise that shewas partly ailed by a sense of tribal loss.
“Iwasbornafter theGroupAreasActhadforced my father’s family from the home-stead where they’d lived since the 1700s inClaremont to Wetton,” Rehane explains.
“There was always an unspoken sadnessaround ‘home’ in the family and I suffereda sense of homelessness/rootlessness, asthough my roots were in shifting water notsoil.” Rehane would often ask her grand-mother where they would from and she re-called these bedtime stories while workingon theplay.Back inCapeTown,Rehaneandher friend, Sara Matchett, started TheMothertongue Project, a collective of fe-male performance artists “interested in ex-ploring the sacred in and through perform-
ance”. They focus on transformation andhealing in their work, thereby empoweringaudiences.
“Sara Matchett and I decided to start itto attempt to address the issues around vio-lence against girls and women that the playexplores,” she explains.“From there Saraexpanded it to affect the lives of hundredsof young women.”
The play was first staged at Cape TownTheatre Laboratory’s Collaborations Festi-val in November 2000 and then at the Baxterin July 2001. What the Water Gave Me fea-tures four different characters which eachrepresent a direction or an element. “Theplay is a sort of a psycho-geography wherethe geography of the city becomes mergedwith a geography of the imagination andthese merge with the geography of the sto-ryteller’s body,”Rehane explains. “Inawayour bodies are a product of the land we walkon, our bodies remember all the places thatshape us to the people who touched and con-tinue to touch us.”V The Cape Town Fringe Festival runs from Thursday25 September until Sunday 5 October. Blouberg adventurer, David Grier lives fora challenge and has just finished anotherof many events he completes in aid of char-ity.
The Cipla Miles for Smiles Mad Runkicked off on Sunday 7 September and sawCipla ultra-runners Grier and Andrew Stu-art brave the elements for 37km per day forthe entire week. The run raises awarenessand funds for children born with cleft lipsand palates. Seven more teams joined Gri-er and Stuart.
As a result of their efforts, a little girl,Karli Pienaar (whose name literally means‘small champion’) received corrective sur-gery for her hare lip at Vincent PallottiHospital on Saturday, 13 September.
Grier, a managing trustee of the CiplaSA Foundation, says: “Starting on day one,we were full of energy and confident of thetask ahead – but as all things go, day twoand the reality of what lies ahead finally
hit.” He says that scaling each hill madehis legs burn and his chest feel like it wasabout to explode. Runners began to fallaway as the group tired and injuriesmounted. But Grier says this was still nota deterrent to the group who had taken onthe challenge before. They started runningon day seven at about the same time thatKarli was wheeled into surgery for her life-changing operation.
“We knew that every difficult step thatwe ran that day was not about us, it wasabout a journey bigger than us. part in the #ALSIceBucketChallenge.TygerBurger was nominated by Prestige
Academy and Centurion Academy in Bell-ville on Wednesday, so Cecilia Hume tookone for the team the very next day.
The #ALSIceBucketChallenge is a globalinitiative aimed at promoting awarenessand generating funds for research foramyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disea-se.
Participants are dared to film themsel-ves having a bucket of iced water pouredover their heads or forfeit by donating mo-ney to a local organisation that deals withALS, a motor neurone disease (MND).
Although TygerBurger have taken thechallenge, the newspaper will also be ma-king a monetary donation to The South Af-rican Motor Neurone Disease Association.
A worthy causeALS is a motor neuron disease (MND)
where the motor neurons, made up of milli-ons of nerve nuclei in the brainstem andspine, degenerate. This causes muscle we-akness and stiffness as well as resistanceto movement and changes in reflexes. Itcan also result in difficulty speaking, swal-lowing, and breathing.
Most people with MND are over the ageof 50, but it can also affect people in their20s or 30s. It usually presents itself in diffe-rent ways depending on the groups of mus-cle fibres that start degenerating, but oncediagnosed; patients usually have a life ex-pectancy of one to five years.
Although research is ongoing, there isstill no cure for MND, only treatments tohelp with symptoms.
TygerBurger nominated Radio Tyger-berg, Tyger Valley and CapeGate shoppingcentres to take up the challenge. So braceyourself and spread awareness about ALS!

Cape Town residents are encouraged toshare their opinions about local policeofficers through the Reward a Cop, Re-
port a Cop campaign. At a public meeting recently, the MEC of
the provincial department of communitysafety, Dan Plato encouraged residents tomake use of the hot-line to respond to que-ries about questionable police behaviour.
The hot-line offers callers an opportuni-ty to share their experiences with police of-ficers in an effort to promote effective polic-ing. According to a pamphlet handed out atthe meeting, poor policing underminesgood police officers and must be addressed.
Bad behaviour should be reported to thestation commander whose direct responsi-bility it is to take action, but issues can alsobe reported to the community police forumor the department of community safety bySMSing the word “REPORT” to 35395, send-ingandemail to [email protected] or by calling 021 483 4332.
It is important to report all the relevantinformation about a complaint as soon aspossible and to take note of police names, ranks and vehicle registration numbers.
If the complaint is about an existingcriminal case, complainants need to havethe case number handy.
The person attending to the complaintshould tell residents what to expect nextand give their contact details so that theycan follow up.
While reporting bad service supports offi-cials who take their jobs seriously, it’s alsoimportant to show appreciation for officerswho are doing a good job.
To compliment good service, residentscan speak to their station commander; con-tact the community police forum or SMSthe word “REWARD” to 35395. Residentscan also fax a letter of thanks to 021 483 6026or email [email protected].
According to the Department of Commu-nity Safety’s policing pamphlet, profession-al policing refers to police officers whoknow how to do their work with confidence, who treat each person with respect and po-liteness, who assist you on time and are ashelpful as possible.
Residents should lay complaints aboutslow or no response, about rudeness or lackof respect, about officers who don’t take re-ports seriously and about officers who don’tknow how to handle an issue.
SAPS officers should never ignore crimi-nal behaviour; never break the law in andway and never use unnecessary violence orforce.
Officers should also never threaten mem-bers of the community and should nevertale or ask for money, gifts or favours.

One often reads and hearsabout motorcyclists’ involve-ment in road accidents – moreoften than not, the cause of theaccident is placed at the feet ofthe other road user.
While sitting in peak hourtraffic on a national road lastweek, I was really annoyed atthe number of bikers zig-zag-ging their way through thegridlocked traffic.
With my senses on highalert, I noticed most motorcy-clists would either speed pastvehicles in the gap betweenlanes, or manoeuvre their waythrough the traffic to get to thefront. They also seem to forcetheir way into turning lanes atrobots or stop-streets, withlittle or no regard for othermotorists.
Understandably, their chosenmode of transport allows themto skip the traffic which we, togreat frustration have toendure. A little respect whilemeandering through vehicleswould be appreciated.

I’m writing with regard toLindie van Wyk’s letter “Ateam of good Samaritans” aboutthe man walking with a crutchwho fell because he had ahyperglycaemic incident,(TygerBurger, 3 September). I’msorry to say, but he is a fake. Ialso helped him in similarcircumstances two years ago. Ididn’t give him any money, butI think the people who assistedme did.
I subsequently found out thathe has been pulling this stunt
all over South Africa. In 2010,he was doing the same inRandburg. Since then, he hassuccessfully pulled his stunt inthe CBD, Green Point andRondebosch.
He usually calls himselfVuyani and he also appears orpretends to be a deaf-mute. Heis always on his way to a busor train station.
By all means, help him upbecause he genuinely appearsto be disabled, but don’t givehim any money. He is usingyou.

Karen Nesbit does not knowwhat goes on behind the scenes.I am on the trustee committeeof a complex in Sonstraal and Iam one of the occupants of aunit where I have to listen tothe barking of dogs all day, while the owners are sitting atwork in bliss.
Yes, we also have a rule thatowners or tenants have toapply to keep an animal of aspecific size, but some of thetenants say they have no pets.Once they are in, a dog arrives, too. When they apply, we aretold the animal is miniature, but then a dog the size of aborder collie suddenly appears. What can you do once they arein? Absolutely nothing.
When they are confronted, weare told: “Strange, we werehome all night or weekend anddidn’t hear the dog barking.”
Obviously the animal won’tbark when you are home. Please think of the otheroccupants of the complex andrather don’t have an animal ifyou cannot be there to takethem out for a walk, give themsome love and attention andkeep them quiet.

Small Bay exploded into a hive of activi-ty when the SUPsistas celebrated theirthird birthday.
SUPsistas is a Stand Up Paddle (SUP) initi-ative that aims to introduce women to theworld’s fastest growing water sport. The sis-tas meet every Thursday for a weekly doseof fun in the waves at the Bloubergstrandbeach.
SUPsistas aims to inspire women to havefun, get fit and healthy and push their per-sonal limits while at the same time support-ing empowermentprogrammes for children.
Founder Karina Figl, her right hand sistaMichéle Minnaar and the Xpression on theBeach (XOTB) team got together to celebrateon Thursday 4 September.
Beach bellesThe bash kicked off with an entertaining
paddle game where the ladies stood togetherin a circle while holding a paddle upright infront of them.
They had to follow Karina’s orders, whiletrying their best to grab the paddle next tothem before it hit the sand.
Next up was a tandem race to the water’sedge, where two ladies had to mount thesame board and paddle out around a human
buoy and back again. The planned activities ended with an ‘in
and out’ relay race where the ladies had torepeat the circuit of the tandem race individ-ually.
BikinisSince SUPsistas received the #IceBuck-
etChallenge from the WOWees, a group of la-dies who body-board in Big Bay, they decid-ed their birthday bash was as good a timeas any to see the challenge through. All thesistas stripped down to their bikinis, leavingthe warmth of their wetsuits behind andheaded into the ice cold sea.
#IceBucketChallenge is a global initiativeaimedat promotingawareness of thediseaseamyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and en-couraging donations to research.
Each SUPsista donated R50 to the cause, raising R100 for the Motor Neuron / ALSDisease Association of SA.
The celebration ended with a prizegivingwhere prizes donated by SUPsista sponsorswere handed out.

Reposition is all about changing thelives of the people around themthrough music.
Manager and multi instrumentalist, JodyJason “JJ” Petersen, describes this KuilsRiver band band as a group of young, like-minded musicians.
The band came together in 2010, when thefive were attending His People Church inKuils River, glorifying in music and songonce a week. It was then that they decidedthat “Sundays weren’t enough” for them.
The decision came after JJ and drummer,Julian Maree played a jazz show together. They soon roped Ashleigh Lubbe in to singvocals before enlisting brothers Michael(keyboards and synth) and Robin Thompson(bass).
Robin, an anthropology student, came upwith the name Reposition, which reflects theband’s desire to reposition people back to aplace of good morals and values. The bandtries to put out a positive message, hopingtheir good example will help bring aboutpositive change in the lives of young chil-dren who look up to them.
“We’re a mixed marsala”The band describes themselves as a band
for hire and a people’s band playing whatev-er their audience calls for, but they’ve alsorecently started writing their own music.
“It’s basically jazz,” Ashleigh says, beforequickly adding that that’s not all they do.“We’re a mixed marsala kind of band,” shesays as there are also a lot of love songs intheir repertoire. “We love love,” she says.
The band has a passion for helping thecommunity. Ashleigh points out that theircommunity always support them and pushthem forward. In this way, Reposition doeswhatever they can to help organisations, communities and other bands grow, just asthey have.
They recently opened a club in Stikland, called Soul 6 as a platform for up and comingacts. “It’s hard for an artist in Cape Townto get work,” says Ashleigh, so they’veopened the club to encourage a performanceplatform. They also give these artists chanceto perform alongside bigger names, like CanSkylark and Ashley Davids.
The group’s dream is to develop Soul 6 intoa full-scale dinner theatre with an artsschool on the side. The group is also individ-ually involved with music development.Ashleigh is a vocal coach for the Departmentof Arts and Culture’s mass participation: op-portunity and access, development andgrowth (MOD) programme. Julian hostsdrum clinics and Robin, Michael and JJplays for other community projects likeSounds of the Nations. The band is startingto evolve by working on writing their ownsongs with the eye on recording in the nearfuture. The group is also planning possibletours across the country and to Namibia.V Visit their Facebook page, under Reposition Band,or follow them on twitter at @repositionband.V JJ and Ashleigh performed on of Reposition’s original songs on the Orange Couch. Visit www.tygerburger.co.za to get a taste of their music.
Jody Jason “JJ” Petersen and Ashleigh Lubbevisited the Orange Couch to talk about theirband, Reposition.

Nurturing talent at cricket schoolCome January next year, one of the
most famous and picturesque cricketgrounds in the world will become
home to a high school. The Western Province Cricket Associa-
tion (WPCA), in partnership with Stone-fountain Colleges, announced the openingof Newlands Cricket High School lastweek.
Shaheed Shaik, the founder and directorof the new school, says the school willbroaden the platform for talented cricketplayers, so that more players of value canproceed through the local cricketing sys-tem. “There are currently four very promi-nent cricket schools in town, but disadvan-taged players cannot afford to attend theseschools,” he says.
“The objective of the new school’s man-agement team is to arrange scholarshipsfor nine players from disadvantaged back-grounds, thus ensuring that money is notthe most important criteria when deciding
which players will be accepted at the topcricket institutions.”
The school will be following the provin-cial education department’s curriculumand will be accepting Grade 8 and Grade9 pupils for next year. In this way, theschool will grow by a grade every year. “Af-ter five years, the school should have atleast 45 well-developed disadvantagedplayers vying for provincial selection onmerit, rather than opting for the very un-popular quota system,” says Shaik.
Balancing cricket and academics“The school will have a fully-fledged aca-
demic programme, but will fit the develop-ment of cricket skills into the daily pro-gramme.” According to the WPCA website, the school will be housed in the CenturyClub on the third floor at the southern endof the field. It will also use the facilities ofWestern Province Cricket Club, a merestone’s throw away from the stadium. “Ap-
plicants will be assessed in terms of theircricket ability by coaches on the school’sstaff and only those players with an aboveaverage ability to play cricket will be ac-cepted. Players who show real potentialbut who have fully not developed, will alsobe considered,” reads the statement.
Passionate about the game“Teaching staff will be registered with
the South African Council of Educators, while cricket coaches will be at least LevelTwo compliant coaches. The school’s coreactivity will be cricket development andplayers will be exposed to the best possibleprogrammes, workshops and practice ses-sions.”
The pupils will also will be exposed tomany forms of cricket and will play match-es in the WPCA schools and clubs competi-tion. They will also tour around the coun-tryandhost touring teams fromaround theworld.
“Playerswill not lose out on schoolwork,as teachers will be touring with the play-ers, ensuring that the academic pro-gramme continues,” Shaik says.
WPCA general manager Nabeal Dienpraises Shaik for his “forward thinking” interms of cricket development and educa-tion. “He is passionate about educationand more passionate about the game ofcricket,” Dien says.
“It is my contention that with his vast ex-perience and passion for education andcricket, this initiative will provide a natu-ral fit for ensuring a successful cricketschool.
“The WPCA is excited about this initia-tive and its implementation, as we have al-ways subscribed to these values of educa-tion, access and opportunity.”
V Anyone interested in joining the school can phone(021) 696 3612 or SMS 084 586 9488. For more information visit www.newlandscricket.co.za.

RONDEBOSCH BOY EXCELS: RANKED HIGH AT ITALIAN AND BRITISH JUNIOR OPEN
Got the drive to go pro
Luca Filippi (15) has a bright future iahead of him as a professional golfer. PHOTO: ROGAN WARD
TASMIN CUPIDO@tazzcup
C oncentrating on that dimpled whiteball balanced on the tee, Luca Filippireadies himself for battle.
With smooth and effortless technique, heswings the driver, which smacks into theball. It’s abundantly clear that this 15-year-old is completely at home on the gently roll-ing hills of a golf course.
Running in the familySo much so in fact, that the Rondebosch
Boys’ High School (RBHS) pupil has beenmaking a name for himself in the competi-tive golfing world over the last five years. His most recent achievement was beingplaced in the top 4 of the Italian Junior Openin Biella earlier this month.
Luca has been playing competitive golfsince the age of nine. His interest was firstprickled when his father, Daniel introducedhim to the sport. “My great-grandfather wasa good golfer and my dad had an handicapof two, so he has always encouraged my in-terest in the sport,” Luca says.
“Both my parents are my greatest support-ers. They are extremely proud of myachievements to date.”
Both his brothers, Stef and Franco are alsokeen golfers and RBHS learners. WhileFranco (Grade 10) dabbles in golf socially,Stef (who’s in matric) has represented theWestern Province u-18 team and plays froma handicap of five. The Milnerton Estate boyhas notched up a number of achievementsthroughout his budding career – most nota-
bly being the top ranked under-16 golfer atthe Junior British Open in July, being se-lected for the Western Province and SouthAfrican Golf Association under-23 teams, his selection to the WP Elite squad for thepast four years and Ernie Els FancourtFoundation, and his placement in the Italiantournament.
He rates time at West Lanchashire GolfClub in the Junior British Open as his mostmemorable experience on the course. “Myluckiest shot was at a tournament in India,I was two shots behind the leader and I knewI couldn’t afford a mistake. So I ‘teethed’ theballed over the green, but it hit a board andshot back onto the green instead of going in-to the forest,” Luca jokes.
“This lucky shot meant I only lost by oneshot.”
‘I want to be number 1’TheMilnertonGolfClubmemberalso lists
meeting South African golfing legend GaryPlayer as one of his favourite memories. Hisshort-term dream is to be placed in the topfive u-18 golfers in the country. This acom-plishment will earn him his Protea blazer.“I hope my golfing abilities will lead to mebeing offered a scholarship to university inTexas and I want to try to get onto the PGATour,” Luca explains.
“And, of course, I want to be the numberone golfer in the world.” He hopes to win allfour majors – PGA Championship, Masters,US Open and British Open – before the ageof 30. But for now, the Grade 9 pupil is tryinghis best to balance his favourite pastime andacademic work.
