Great food, awesome football games, the best weather of the year, hunting season, and celebration with family lead the way as to why Thanksgiving is my most favorite holiday of the year. Thanksgiving has been my favorite holiday since I was a child, but Thanksgiving has a special meaning to me now. Thanksgiving is the last holiday that I got to spend with my mother before she passed away, so this time of the year reminds me of one of my mother’s favorite scripture verses. Luke 12:48…“From everyone who has been given much, much will be required, and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be asked.” While doing some research several years ago, I learned that Bill Gates’ mother had given he and his wife, Melinda, the same advice when they were married. Shortly thereafter, Bill’s mother passed away with cancer as did mine. I know that we have some great needs in our district and in our community. But in the grand scheme of life and in comparison to the rest of the world, we still live in a land of plenty and one of opportunity. I am so proud of our students and staff for giving back to our community over the past three weeks in the form of our district’s food drive. Our 3,385 students brought almost 5,000 items of food. And, congratulations to the A.M. Story campus for leading the charge! These items are being used to restock the shelves of 3 local Community Food Banks – one of which had nothing to give a needy family last weekend. Following yesterday afternoon’s turkey distribution, our Board of Trustees, along with several district administrators, delivered an entire family meal of Thanksgiving food to 12 families of students in our school district. The majority of items delivered to these families came from the generosity of students and staff on our 6 outstanding campuses. This morning, I ran into one of the youngsters who received one of these Thanksgiving boxes. He thanked me again for the Thanksgiving gift and in the course of conversation made the comment that he was really excited because his family got more food than his brothers and sisters sent to school for the food drive. His comment hit me right between the eyes! See – this family didn’t have much, but they had enough and were willing to share what they had with others. My Thanksgiving wishes are for you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving, for health and safe travels next week, for once or twice in my life - some peace in the world. I hope for the turkey to turn out just right and for the Dallas Cowboys to win a football game. But, the young man I visited with this morning has already given me one of my Thanksgiving wishes and that is to know that others are at least interested in giving as much as they are receiving. Happy Thanksgiving!
