INTRODUCTION
• Human physic receives the drug in two-ways. One through direct routs, i.e. through apertures of the body and another one are through the whole surface of the body .
• The medicines that are in form of paste and used in form of external application are called as LEPA.
• Absorption of drugs through body surface deserves special care for its optimum delivery.

GENERAL METHOD OF PREPARATION• The drugs are first made into a fine powder and then mixed with some
liquid media like water/cow’s urine/ oil/ ghee/ swarasa/ decoction etc.to obtain the paste form. This paste is applied over the skin.
• Doshagna lepa- the powder has to be mixed with Aranala (fermented gruel) as the media.
• Visaghna lepa- ghee mixed with hot water should be used as the media.
• Varnya lepa- lemon juice/ milk/ egg-albumin should be Used as the media.

RULES OF APPLICATION OF LEPA AND MECHANISM OF ITS ABSORPTION• Lepas should always be applied in the opposite direction of The hair
follicles.The drugs get absorbed through hair roots, Sweat glands and capillaries. While applying the lepas, snehas should be added.Their Quantity has to be decided as per the dosha vitiated.
• The lepa should not be left in situ after drying. It must be removed as soon as it dries up. Because lepas in wet state helps to cure the diseases and on drying, they loose their Potency and causes the irritation of the skin. Lepa should be prepared and used fresh.
• Lepas should be applied only once and should not be applied Over the previous one.

PRALEPA • This is the sheeta (cold) lepa prepared with sheeta guna
• Dravyas with out heating .
• It is applied as a tanu (thinlayered) lepa, may or may not be allowed to dry
• Indicated in pitta dosa Pradhana twak rogas.

PRADEHA
• This is usna (lukewarm) lepa
• Prepared with usna Virya dravyas
• Applied bahula (thick),useful in vata and
Shleshma doshaja twakrogas (skindiseases).

ALEPA
• The action, thickness etc of this lepa will be moderate
• It is useful in rakta and pittadosa pradhana skin diseases.

DOSHAGNA
• It is prepared by finely powdering the Punarnava, Daruharidra, Sunthi, Sarsapa and Sigru bija separately, then mix together and preserve.
• While using, mix with aranala (fermented gruel) and apply.
• This is indicated in Sotha.

VISHAGNA LEPA
• It is prepared By pounding the ingredients Sirisha twak, Yasti Moola, Tagara kanda, Chandana moola(wood),Ela beeja, Jatamamsi(rhizome), Haridra (rhizome),Daruharidra kanda,Balamoola,Kustha moola and ghrita all in equal parts into fine powder and preserved.
• While using,it should be mix with ghee and hot water, applied in Pratiloma Gati. Indicated in Jwara, Sotha,Visarpa and Kustha

VARNYA LEPA• It is prepared by pounding the ingredients rakta chandana, manjistha,
lodhra, kustha, priyangu, vatankura and masura daal.While using lemon juice/milk/egg-albumin, should be added and paste should be prepared .
• Applied to the face.
• Indicated in vyanga,
• Improves colour and complexion of the skin.

CHARAKA SAMHITA
Acharya Charaka had described Lepa in Chikitsa Sthana for treatment of--
Kushta, Sidhma,Rajayakshma,
Shotha,Arsha, Visarpa, Madatyay,
Vrana, Khalitya, Palitya, Vatarakta,
Yonivyapad, Stanya Vikara.

SHUSHRUT SAMHITA
Acharya Shushrut mentioned lepa in –
• Shashti Vrana Upakrama - Krishnakarma, Pandukarma, Romasnjanan, Lomapaharan, etc.
• Diseases like Vatarakta, Arsha, Ashmari, Kushtha, Dadru, Shwitra (Lepa Guti) (Varti),Galita Kushtha, Vidradhi, Visarpa, Granthi, Arbuda , Galaganda, Upadansha,Shleepada and Kshudraroga.

SARANGADHARA SAMHITA
Acharya Sharanghara mentioned some important lepa such as--
• Kitaghna Lepa, Sury-avartahar, Ardhava-bhedakahara,
Kurand-hara, Yoni Sankochaka,Yoni-dravaka,
Linga-vriddhikara, Stana-vriddhikara and Vashikarana Lepas.
The nomenclature of Lepas depends on either the prime ingredient in Lepa (Langalyadi Lepa) or total content in the Lepa (Dashang Lepa).

RASNADI LEPA
• The fine powder is mixed with caster oil and applied to the head. In Pratishaya after oil bath, the powder is put on the centre of the head and gently rubbed.

• Ingredients- Kumari , Hirabol, Guggulu, Sarjakshara, Madanaphala Lodhra etc with Amla Dadhi
• Indication- Shoola (Colicky Pain), Shotha (Inflammation), Ashthi Bhagna (Bone fracture), Sandhi- chyute (Dislocation of bones, joints)

• Ingredients- Sindura, Rasa-sindura, Rasakapura, MruddarShringa, Madhuccista and Narikela Taila
• Indication- Vicharchika (Eczema), Vipadika (Scaly lesions on palms and soles), Vrana (Ulcer), Kandu (Itching), (Chancroid ) , Upadansaja Vrana.

PARADAADI LEPA
• Ingredients- Parada , Gandhaka Haritala,Mruddara Shringa, Jiraka, (Tulasirasa, Dhatura for mardana to make tablet)
• Indication- Vati is to be mixed with ghrita and used externally. Upadamsa (Syphilis), Vrana (Ulcer)
• Ref- Yogaratnakara Upadamsha Chikitsa -1-3

CONCLUSION
• Though the lepas described in Ayurveda are effective, they are less known and used in a limited way.
• Knowledge of different varieties of lepas available in different forms may help the future research scholars and the physicians to use it in an appropriate way.
