Ad hoc Networks

• Motivation

• Network without infrastructure

• Network constructed for a special purpose

• Ad hoc (Latin word) – “for this(only)”

• Laptops in a conference room –

a single-hop ad hoc network

• Challenges:

Lack of central entity for organization available• self-organization

• Limited range of wireless communication

• multi-hopping

Ad hoc Networks

• Mobility of participants

• Suitable, adaptive protocols

• Battery-operated entities

Energy aware networking protocols• Routing

• Table-driven Routing Protocols

• Source-initiated On-demand Routing

• Applications:• Virtual navigation

• Tele-medicine

Wireless Sensor Networks•

Similar to ad hoc networks but focus on interacting withenvironment

• Proactive and Reactive sensor Networks

• Sensor nodes deployed in remote environment-generally

random deployment• Nodes process information and communicate it wirelessly

• Wireless sensor & actuator networks (WSAN)

• Challenges:

• Very low power consumption

• Robustness

• Flexibility

• Security

Small size and cost1/17/2013 6

Wireless Sensor Networks

• Requirements of the network varies with the application

• Algorithms:

• Localization

Data aggregation• Time synchronization

• Applications:

• Environment data collection

• Security monitoring

• Node tracking

Body Area Networks

• Wearable computing devices

• Broad range of possible devices

• Based on WPAN technologies for communications

on, near and around the human body

• Offer “Connected User” experience

• Matches low power environment

Body Area Networks

• Technical specifications• Distance 2 m std, 5 m special

• Piconet density 2 - 4 nets / m2

• Devices per network max. 100

• Net network throughput 100 Mbits /s max.• Power consumption ~ 1mW / Mbps

(@ 1 m distance)

• Startup time < 100 us, or< 10% of TX slot

• Latency (end to end) 10 ms• Network setup time < 1 sec

(after initial setup, per device)

• Topology star, mesh or tree

Body Area Networks

• Technical Specifications

• Peer to peer communication, point to multi-point

• Omni-directional antennas: small, flexible

• Quality of service, guaranteed bandwidth – Specific definitions, depends on application

• Needs optimized, low complexity MAC and Networking layer

Vehicular Networks

• Formed between moving vehicles equipped with wireless

interfaces

• Also known as VANETs

• Main objective of increasing road traffic safety and efficiency

by inter vehicular communication

• The network is provided by the DHCP servers installed

roadsides

Integration of network interface, GPS receiver , differentsensors and an onboard computer system which is capable

gathering , processing and distributing information

Vehicular Networks

• Requires wireless mobile comm.

• Current options: cellular, ad-hoc, wireless LAN and info

stations

• Comfort applications

• Mobility management schemes must be scalable and efficient

• Geographic routing instead of ad hoc routing due to the large

latency and overhead

Hand off management for changing vehicles nearby• management of vehicular network is tougher than other

network management

• Real time requirements

Distributed Processing using

Networks• Collection of processors interconnected by a communication

network in which each processor has its own local memory

and other peripherals

• Message Passing

• Information Sharing among Distributed Users

• Resource Sharing

• provides shorter response times and higher throughput by

load distribution among several processors

• Higher Reliability

• Increased complexity and difficulty in building distributed

network
