specicprojectsandwehaveraisedover$20,000

incashfortheseendeavours.Halfofthiscame

fromtheHastingsDistrictCouncil.

Wehavealsohadconsiderablesupportand

sponsorship,inkind,suchasworkfromVKA

Advertising,peoplestimeintothehealthprogram,

MACcoaching,administration,theAitutakibenet

fund,thegroundpreparationwork,compostat

theMaraeCommunityGarden,bikedonations,

Tunutunusuppliesandthehugecontributioninthehealthprogram.

wewouldsharewithothersinthecentralFlaxmereretailarea.Wehavenowabandonedthisobjective

duetoachangeoffocus.

keep you inormed about our activities and programs. A huge amount has gone on over the

last six months and it is difcult to report accurately and to give due credit to everything that

U-turn trust and the

Te Aranga Marae are

two spirits travelling in

the same Waka.

Manyoftheprojectsthat

U-turnsupportswere

instigatedbyTeArangaMarae,

suchasTunutunuandThe

CommunityGarden.

HenareandPamOkeefe

continuetobecentraltoboth

theTrustandtheMarae.

TheMaraeisahugeinuence

onourbehaviourandhasanincreasinginuenceand

protectionovermanyofour

newinitiatives.

Flaxmere Heroes Calendar

TheobjectivewastocreateaU-Turncalendar

whichpositivelyhighlightedsomeveryspecialand

dynamicpeoplethatliveinorcomefromFlaxmere;

Ahero(orheroes)foreachmonthoftheyear.

Thiswasourrstrealprojectanditwasapositive

waytopresentouraimsandobjectivestothe

community.

Withtremendoushelpfrommanypeoplewe

producedourrstFlaxmereheroescalendar(3000

copies)forthe2010yearatacostof$7,000.ThiswassponsoredbytheFlaxmerelicensingTrustwith

asmalltopupfromourownfunds.

ThecalendarwaslaunchedataneventheldatTe

ArangamaraeinDecemberandthiswasavery

successfuleveningwhere

theheroeswereintroduced

tothecommunityandwere

sungtobyPhilipRhodes.It

wasanextremelyenjoyable

andsuccessfulnightwhichwasfollowedbythe

distributionofthecalender

toover2,800homesin

Flaxmere.

TotaraHealthhavekindly

offeredtosponsorthe2011

calendarandwehaveasked

thecommunitytonominate

theirheroes.

Te Aranga Marae Garden Project

TheMaraegardencontinuestogrowandhas

beenabeaconforpeoplefromallwalksoflife

inFlaxmere.TheMaraeobjectivewastobring

peopletogether,tocreategoodfellowshipaswell

asgoodvegetables.

Plantinggotunderwayinthespringandwehad

asuccessfulgrowingseasonandharvest.We

weregreatlysupportedbyahugecommunity

uptakeandtheeffortsoftheMarae,Community

Maxstaff,ablyleadbyGrantGreenwood.These

youngpeopleunderGrantsleadershiphavenot

onlycontributedtowardthisprojectgrowingand

distributingvegetablestoolderpeopleinFlaxmere

butalsotowardtheirowngrowthascitizens.The

FlaxmereTonganandCookIslandcommunities

havetheirownsectionand

bothhavegrownkumaraand

taroinabundance.

Wehavehadgreatsupport

fromlocalagriculturalists,

includingMikeGlazebrook

whoplacedahugeamount

ofbeautifulcompostonthe

centralgardenandboththe

ApatuandBostockfamilies

haveploughedandworked

thesoil.

TheteamatBNZgaveup

theirtimeforadaystoilin

thegardenandthiswasvery

helpfulandenjoyable.

Itsavery

boneypiece

oflandwithout

muchtop

soilthatwill

continueto

needalotof

investmentand

tenderlove

andcare.We

haverecently

successfully

appliedtotheSpringhillTrusttoassistwithnew

equipmentandgardeningtools.

Weareplanninganotherplantingprogram

thisspring.

Prisoner Rehabilitation

HenareandPamcontinuetobeactiveinthisarea

andhaveassistedseveralreleasedprisonersover

thelastsixmonths.

Flaxmere Triathlon

Wehavehaddiscussionswiththepossible

organisersandSportHawkesBayabouthavingaFlaxmeretriathelianandtheyarekeentohelpwith

theestablishmentofthisevent.

Distressed Families

Wehavenotedthatthenumberofdistressed

familiesinFlaxmerehaveincreasedandHenareand

Pamsworkcontinuesinthisarea.Itisaconcern

thatsocialservicesdontseemtobecopingwith

thisincreaseandwelookforwardwithoptimism

totheintroductionoftheWhanauOraprogram.

Tunu Tunu

TheTunutunumobilebarbequecontinuestobea

greatvehicletomeetthepeopleofFlaxmereand

deliverourmessage.Thishasinvolvedahuge

effortfromHenareandPamandtherearenot

manypeopleinFlaxmereorsurroundingdistrictsthatdontknowaboutTunutunu.

ThecapitalcostofsettingupTunutunuwas

nancedbyUnisonanddonatedtotheTeAranga

Marae.Peopleinthecommunitycontinueto

donatemoney,(smallandlarge)foodandgastokeepthiswonderfulconceptontheroad.3R

Recyclinghasbeenabigsupportergivingaregular

donationeverysixmonths.

Flaxmere Health program

ThisprogramwasproposedbyTaineRandelland

iseffectivelyaculturallyspeciceatingprogram

thatfocussondiabetescontrol.Wewanttorun

twopilotprograms,therstbeingbasedfromthe

TeArangaMaraeandifthatissuccessfulthenwe

willmovetoawiderpilotinvolvingotherMarae

andcommunitygroupsinFlaxmere.

31peoplewereselectedfromtheMarae,mostly

peoplewhowereveryoverweight.

ThegroupmeetontheMaraeeveryWednesday

nightwheretheyreceivefreshcounselling,blood

sugarchecksandofcourseareweighed.

Intwoweeksthegrouplost90Kilosandwhilethispaceofchangehasslowedthegroupisstill

continuingtolosealargeamountoffat.Ourown

teamhavebeenverysuccessfulinthisprogram;

Des(lost13kg)Henare(lost6kg)Pam(lost12kg)

Rebecca(lost12kg)andGrant(lost20kg).

Theenthusiasmandmoraleboosthasbeenquite

incredibletowatch.Everyoneonthisprogram

isbubblingaboutitseffectontheirlifeandthis

isoneofthemostsuccessfulprogramsthatwehavebeeninvolvedwithtodate.Theprogram

isofcourseongoinganditwouldnthavebeen

possiblewithouttheguidanceandgenerosityof

BenWarrenofBePurewhohascontributedhis

timeandknowledgetotheFlaxmerecommunity.

Goingforward,

thisprojectwill

requiresubstantial

fundingandwearecurrentlyworkingon

abusinessplanto

achievethis.

Henare,TaineandPatBensonhaveputtremendous

timeandeffortintothisclubandtheturnaround

hasbeenremarkablewiththreewinsalreadythis

season.HavinganexAllBlackandexHawkes

BaycaptainasmentorsandcoachestoaFlaxmere

basedrugbyteamhashadahugeeffectonthe

teamandwithmembersofthiscommunity.Thisis

abigtributetobothofthem.TheBensonMarquee

isalsonowregularlyseenatMACaftermatch

functionsandLawrencehasdonehisbiton

tunutunuattheaftermatchfunctions.TheTrust

hascontributedasmallamounttothesefunctions

whichishelpingtobringthecommunitytogether

aroundthisteam.

Wehavefoundsponsorsfortheteamsnewjerseys

andUnisonhassponsoredtrainingshirts.They

havealsocommittedtheirsupporttothejunior

club.TherearetoomanychildreninFlaxmerewhowant

toplayrugby,missingoutandweneedtomake

surethisdoesnthappeninthefuture.

TheMACSportClubisbasedinFlaxmereand95%

oftheplayersandsupportersresideinFlaxmere.

MACisanoldandwellrespectedpremierrugby

teamthathasahugehistoryinHawkesBay,

supportedbyplayerslikeGeorgeNepia,ToriRead

andEveradJackson.

Theclubhasbeenablyleadinrecentyearsby

AnthonyMorleyandithasmovedintoawhnau

basedorganisationencompassingarangeofsports

andfamilyactivities.

Antonyandhissupportershavebeenincredibly

successfulinthisendeavourandtheynowhave

500registeredclubmembersandaretheHawkes

Baynetballchampions.Theyarealsoanexample

ofstrongfamilyvaluesandcommitmenttotheir

community.Unfortunatelytherugbyteamdid

notfollowthenetballteamssuccessontheeld

andtheystruggledagainstbetterfundedclubs

andwereregularlybeatenby100pointswithan

averagebeatingof80pointsovertheseason.

Itisourviewthatthisrugbyteamisimportantin

Flaxmere Bike Program

WehaveassistedPaulMcCardlewithhisbike

programsandhavedonatedseveralbikesintothe

community,includingtwobrandnewbikestothe

FlaxmerePolice.

PaulisveryfocusedonmakingHawkesBaythe

bikecapitalforNewZealandandhehasinvested

ahugeamountofhistime,moneyandenergy

intomakingthishappen.

HehascompletedabiketrackatSaintMary

primaryschoolandhascapturedthePrime

Ministerononeofhisbikesridingaroundthe

schoolscylepath.

PaulhasworkedwithourTrusttodonateover40

bikesintotheFlaxmerecommunity.Ithasbeenanamazingeffortandwecontinuetodoeverything

wecantosupporthisendeavours.

boxing.

ofAitutakiwashitbyadevastatingcycloneearlierthisyear.Manyof

theseislandersliveinFlaxmereand

webelievedthatitwasimportant

wesupportedthematthistime.

U-Turnwasinstrumentalinchanging

theirvenuefromtheCookIsland

communityhallinFlaxmeretothe

HawkesBayOperahouseandgained

sponsorshiptopayfortheAuckland

basedentertainersairfares.U-Turnunderwrotethiscostwhilethe

sponsorwasbeingfoundandtheLowefamily

kindlypickedupallofthesecosts.

Theeventwasa

hugesuccessand

culturallydiverse

withmostof

theactscoming

fromFlaxmere.It

raised$10,500forthepeopleof

Aitutaki.

Summary

WedonthavealotofmoneybutourpeopleinU-turnandourpartnersintheMaraearepassionateand

committedandwewillcontinuetosupportallthepeopleofFlaxmerewiththeresourcesthatmanyofyou

providetous.
