Phil Hargett Memorial Fund Scholarship Winner
Lacey Lovingood, a 2014 graduating senior was awarded a $6,000 Union Academy Foun-dation Scholarship at the class breakfast this past spring. The scholarship will pay for her entire two years at South Piedmont Commu-nity College. This scholarship truly made a
difference in Laceys college opportunity and the Lovingood family was very grateful.
The Phil Hargett Memorial Fund was estab-lished to provide temporary assistance for
families with emergencies or hardships. Phil Hargett was a man with a lifelong mission of helping the community and making a differ-
ence. He was the grandfather of 4 Union Academy students, friend to many, and often
seen at UA functions and events. He is still missed every day. The Phil Hargett Fund ex-
ists to honor his memory and, as Phil did, make a difference in our community.
Its with great pride that Union Academy and awards the Phil Hargett Memorial Fund
scholarship every year.
Congratulations Lacey !!!

Summer Community Service
Many of our students continued to serve oth-
ers with their community service commitment
during the summer months. Much of this ser-
vice was done locally. Some had the oppor-
tunity to serve across the United States and in
other counties such as Africa and Costa Rica.

Lower Campus News
~ COMMUNITY SERVICE AT THE LOWER CAMPUS ~
At Union Academy, it is our belief that a well-rounded education requires students and staff to be active par-
ticipants in thoughtfully organized service to others. Students in each grade level are assigned meaningful op-
portunities for community service. Each community service project is grade-level appropriate. There are sev-
eral school-wide opportunities throughout the school year in which both students and parents can partici-
pate. Through out the year we will be hosting drives to assist our students in their efforts to help oth-
ers. More information will be forthcoming on these drives. For now, please remember our 3rd grade recy-
cling program which goes on all year long. A recycling bin is set up in front of the far parking lot at the lower
campus. Please drop your cans and plastic bottles here for recycling. Also, please save any pop tops for our
2nd graders who collect for Ronald McDonald House. These can be dropped off at any campus front desk.
And finally, the 4th grade encourages you to remember the wonderful animals wanting a forever home at the
Union County Animal Shelter! We thank you for your support!
CHARACTER EDUCATION AT THE LOWER CAMPUS:
Once a month one student in each classroom is awarded the Character
Kid of the Month award for showing great character. Students vote for
the child in his or her classroom that he or she thinks shows the charac-
ter trait of the month. Our first character assembly for Compassion
will be held August 22nd at 1:20 PM. Parents are notified in advance so
that they may attend the assembly. Students are also recognized
through our Spotlight Student bulletin board when they have exhibit-
ed outstanding character to their peers and teacher. We love when our
students show their excellent UA character!

WE are UA Uniquely UA!
How does your garden grow?
Ask Middle School teacher Mrs. Rushing and she breaks into a big smile and says Great!
When not in class, she and several students are usually found playing in the dirt in the raised
beds found behind the Upper School courtyard. The garden was originally created as a teach-
ing and community service tool and has seen steady growth ever since. Several grants have al-
lowed us to expand these gardens. The last large bed was just completed from a grant from the
Farm Bureau, prior to school finishing for the summer. Not only does the garden generate lots
of produce, it gives our students a chance to experience agriculture in a small way which is so
much of our local history in Union County.
As vegetables are ready to be harvested, be looking for a small produce stand that will be set up near the Upper Cam-
pus carpool marque for parents to shop for our fresh tomatoes, garlic, squash, green beans, lettuce and vegetables
fresh from our gardens, to your dinner table. The honor system will be used. Donations will help to cover the cost of
plants, etc. The bulk of our produce will go to local agencies in our area that feed others. Our UA garden is truly a self
sustaining treasure in our own backyard. If you interested in helping or donating supplies, please contact Mrs. Rushing
Mrs. Lana Hoffman, Kindergarten Teacher
Welcome Mrs. Hoffman to her first year at Union Academy. Mrs. Hoffman joins us as a sea-
soned career Kindergartener teacher from Rocky River and Wesley Chapel Elementary. She
loves her Kindergarteners and is excited about the new opportunities here at UA.
Mrs. Hoffman said UA feels comfortable already as many of our UA students have passed
through her Kindergarten classrooms in the past.
Mrs. Hoffman resides in Wesley Chapel with her husband Vic, son Zach and daughters Haley and Chandler.
They have a new golden retriever puppy named Sawyer.
Her favorite vacation spot is the beach. Her favorite color is green. Her favorite food is anything Japanese .
Welcome Mrs. Hoffman !!!

Scrip is a year-round fundraiser where you purchase gift cards. Union Academy purchases Scrip gift cards at
discount between 2-15%. Families buy the Scrip gift cards at face valueUA keeps the difference.
Retailers include: Wal-Mart, Food Lion, Lowes, Chick-Fil-A, Olive Garden, Gap, Amazon, and 100s more.
Last year, total sales of $87,000 generated $4,376 of profit. Only 10% of UA families participated! Just imagine, if on-
ly 200 families spend $110/month and our school earns an average of 5% on those purchases, we could make $15,000
in one year!
How to Order Scrip Gift Cards:
1. Fill out the Scrip order form (found on the Scrip page on the UA website)
2. Attach payment to form and send with your child or drop off at either campus.
