    Dear Fellow Alumni

This is a pivotal time inthe history of our greatUniversity. Now is thetime to fully commitand rally behind the

students that are thereand those who have yet

to step onto the campus. The NationalAlumni Association has come up withfour pillars to foster and promote thegeneral welfare and growth of the Uni-versity of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.

    1. Recruitment- To help the Universityattain 3,800 students within the next 3years and 4500 students in the next 5years; for every additional 100 studentsthe University will receive an estimated$1.3 million in revenues

    2. Retention-To raise at least $125,000or more to retain as many students aspossible by providing scholarships to off-set the cost of tuition, books, fees, roomand board

    3. Alumni House-To have 1000 paidnational members for 2012 (note: 443paid members in 2011)

    4. Alumni Village- To build a complexthat will house up to 250 students in

conjunction with the S.T.E.M build-ing (This will give the National AlumniAssociation perpetual income for scholar-ships, maintenance and operations)

In order to see these pillars built andsustained, it is going to take all of us do-ing what we can and that is to committoday to pay your national and localdues. The DFW chapter has made acommitment to the pillars of Recruitmentand Retention. We have already startedthe ground work towards assisting withthose endeavors by attending collegefairs, speaking to students about getting

a college education and what thatmeans, and hosting a reception duringSWAC. The reception during SWAC was

successful in that three students weregiven scholarships on that day. Manymore students since that day have calledand expressed an interest in attending

UAPB. It is my desire to see that we as alocal chapter do all that we can to sendthe students from the DFW-Metroplex toour University. Committing today to payyour dues and becoming involved in thelocal chapter is just a part of the pro-cess. The National Alumni AssociationPresident Calvin Booker also needs us tocommit to the Presidents Club Member-ship. The national board members andother chapter presidents are coming to-gether to raise $125,000 to support thefour Pillars. The goal is to get at leastfive hundred alumni and friends to com-

mit to $250 dollars in addition to yournational dues. Pease fellow alumni andfriends, join me in making this commit-ment to our University. Our Universityhas many more students that need topass through her doors and it is up to usto make the commitment to ensure thatwill happen. I would ask that you takethe time to visit the National Alumniwebsite at www.uapb-alumni.organd dowhat you can to support the efforts ofthe National Alumni Association.

A Lesson on Refraction, a Journey in Love

    Page 2 Lion Informer

    By LaShonda Cunningham-Dedner

This love story started as a result of the

awkwardness that comes when the teacher

asks a question and nobody responds. Im

    positive this

    scenario oc-

    curs in eve-

    ry class-

    room on theplanet. This

    lack of re-

    sponse can

    be caused

by fear of giving the incorrect answer, fear of

everyone finding out that you havent stud-

ied, or in my case just trying to remain totally

    and completely anonymous. Glenn decided

to be the one to raise his hand and answerMr. Mortazavis questionsalmost every

class. I was first drawn to the fact that he was

right most of the time. The bravery that he

possessed for putting himself out there like

that was definitely a plus. I have to admit that

    I didnt mind turning

    around and watching

    him answer the ques-

    tions because he was

    so cute.

    The topic that I

    remember most from

    this class is refraction,

    which is the phenome-

    na that is responsible

for rainbows as well as the splitting of light as

it passes through a prism. Our story is much

like the result of refraction. A ray of light

headed in a specific direction is just a ray of

light. But when an amazing object is placed

in the path of that light, you can rest assured

that something beautiful will be produced on

the other side. Both of our lives havechanged for the better because of

    attending UAPB

    and because of

    meeting each

    other at UAPB.

    Neither of these

    occurred by co-

    incidence, but

because of theOne who is re-

sponsible for all phenomenon. Fifteen years

later, and two additional beams of light add-

ed to the path has made the journey even

    better.

UAPB gave us the opportunity to re-

ceive a world-class education, but little

did we know that it was also going to

provide us with the greatest of all gifts. The first statement of John B. Watsons

Philosophy of Education is a profound

one. The end of education is to know

God and the laws and purposes of his

universe. In the end, knowledge will

vanish away and the only gift left stand-

    ing will be love.

Greetings UAPB Alumni members & friends!

I am Kimberly Hinton, a 1996 graduate of the University of Arkansas at Pine

Bluff (UAPB) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science andyour representative for the UAPB/AM&N DFW Alumni Chapters 2012 Ms.

Alumni contestant. I have worked in the Information Technology sector for more than 15+years working for Fortune 100 Companies in several different industries.

And why am I so passionate about participating as a contestant thisyear? Its because 2012marks not only my 40th birthdaybut also the 40thanniversary of when our alma materjoined the University of Arkansas system. What a landmark for the both us!

But my passion for this university goes much deeper. It started with my grandmother,

Mrs. Gertha Trice, mother of 13 children, whose dedication to UAPB birthed a rich herit-age in my family and that legacy continues today. And Im honored to be one of the familymembers who are continuing to contribute annually to the Gertha Trice Endowed Scholar-ship that began in 2002 with a $12,000 gift to the university.

Here is a list of my grandmothers family members who called the university home and the

year(s) they graduated from or attended UAPB.

    My mother, Essie Trice-

    Hewett is

    graduat-

    ed from

    our alma

mater in 1975. And perhaps its

    her courage to overcome the

challenges in her life when she

was just a freshman at AM&N

    that is strengthening my desire

to honor our university and my

parents at the same time. For it

was the year she was named

    Miss Freshman at the university

    that she discovered she was

pregnant with me. And while I

could have been one of those

    more than 45 million babies

    aborted between 1972 through

2005, my mother and my dad,Tim Hinton, made the decision

to do whatever it took to give

me life. I want to celebrate that

    decision and the university that

gave me the education that pre-

pared me for life as well.

I want to share my passion to

help keep UAPB strong and our

heritage vibrant. And now I want to help

    other students realize their own

dreams for the future and help

prepare them for the many op-

    portunities that will come their

    way. My mother experienced

    that encouragement through

    my godmother and

    her mentor,

    Vhaness McHenry,

    Dr. Lawrence Davis,

    Sr.s assistant. That experience

    for todays students will start

    with the opportunity to learn

    from knowledgeable UAPB pro-

    fessors who will provide them

with an education that we may

not know is possible. It will also

    offer them the opportunity to

    create friendships that can last

for a lifetime, as well as afford

    them the opportunity to reach

    their full potential and future

    successes.

    And thats where you

come in. From the arts to athlet-

    ics and everything in between,

    you have the opportunity to

give a gift that will open thedoor to more students experi-

    encing an UAPB education. We

were fortunate to be able to at-

    tend this outstanding institution

    and receive a world-class edu-

cation. Now lets help open the

door for more qualified and in-

    quisitive students to do the

    same.

Our gifts your gift to the

    UAPB/AM&N DFW Alumni

    Chapter will not only help

make that possible, but it will

    also provide students the op-

    portunity to access financial aid

that will also open the door for

them to attend UAPB. I hope

youll join us to help deserving

    students experience all that is

UAPB. Your gift is critical to en-

    suring a strong financial aid

    budget and the opportunities

    needed to provide students

    with the unparalleled education

that UAPB provides. Its easy to

give, so please review the en-

    closed information,which de-tails membership, sponsor-

    ship and advertising opportu-

nities. Lets make sure we pro-

    vide the UAPB/AM&N DFW

    Alumni Chapter with the funds

    they need to support financial

aid and all aspects of a quality

    UAPB education for its future

students. I sincerely appreci-ate your generous gift for the

    future students of UAPB.

    Thank you for your assistance,
