1. Quick Start This section is a quick start guide for setting up the Ubi system. For detailed descriptions and instructions,

please refer to the rest of the document. For a first time user, a tutorial will be provided during installation

of Ubi that guides the user through the setup process:

Run the Kinect Configuration Verifier tool to ensure that your PC can run Ubi.

Install Ubi

Enter the activation code (received via email) when you run Ubi for the first time.

Power up the Kinect for Windows V2 sensor (or Kinect for Xbox One + Adapter) and connect it to a

Windows 8 PC (USB 3.0 port).

Connect the projector to the PC.

Select your interaction mode: touch or in-air gesture.

The following instructions apply to touch mode only:

Create the following test setup:

o Create an on-the-go setup: the Kinect and projector are placed on a table. You can place

the Kinect at a slight angle to minimize occlusion.

o Project onto a plain white wall or surface.

o Create a projection display that is between 60 and 80 inches diagonally.

o Use the table below to determine where to place the Kinect.

Where to place the Kinect for Windows V2 (or Xbox One) Sensor

Modes Supported Kinect Distance from Display Projected Display Size

All modes 45 inches 61 inches All modes 50 inches 69 inches All modes 55 inches 76 inches

o Adjust the position the Kinect so that it ‘sees’ the WHOLE projected display (see Figure

6: Kinect Camera View).

Click the “Start” button on and the system will calibrate automatically.

You can interact with the projection display as though it is a touch screen. Depending on the

mode, use your finger or the Ubi pen to interact with the display. Make sure that your body does

not occlude the finger or pen movement from the view of the Kinect sensor.

Unplug the Kinect when you are finished using it. This will disable interaction on the projected

display.

Please note, if you select in-air gesture mode, you will not be required to go through the calibration

process and you will be taken directly to your desktop to begin interaction.

In order to turn the projected display interactive, you need to follow these steps.

1. Activate Ubi

You should receive an email from [email protected] with the download link and activation code

when you purchase or request a trial of the software. The email will also specify on how many machines

the activation code can be used to activate Ubi. You will be prompted to type in the activation code when

you run Ubi for the first time.

In order to enhance performance, Ubi will prompt you to disable right click during the installation process.

2. Connect the Kinect sensor

Power up the Kinect for Windows V2 sensor and connect it to the USB v3.o port on your Windows 8 PC or

tablet..

Figure 3: Connect the Kinect to the PC

3. Select the mode of interaction: touch or in-air gestures

4. Begin the Calibration Process (for Touch Mode only)

Once the Kinect is connected to your PC, Ubi is running and will start the calibration process. Ubi can

be managed through the system tray.

5. Position the Kinect sensor

You should adjust the position and the view angle of the Kinect sensor to fit the whole screen into the

Kinect Camera View, as shown below. For optimal performance, adjust the position of the projector or the

Kinect so that the Kinect camera can see as much of the projected display as possible (see image below).

6. Calibrate (for Touch Mode Only)

Now hit the “Start” button to let the system calibrate by itself. During calibration, a multi-dot pattern will

flash on the display for less than a second. Once calibration is completed, Ubi will display a message

indicating that calibration succeeded along with tips on how to further optimize your physical setup (see

Figure 8: Ubi System Performance Check). Click “OK” and Ubi will minimize to the interaction menu

(Figure 9: Interaction Menu). The screen is now interactive. To disable interaction, simply unplug the

Kinect from your PC (conversely, plugging the Kinect back into your PC will enable interaction again) or

tap interaction OFF (see Figure 8). Note: Unplugging the Kinect does not stop Ubi from running in the

background. Please refer to Section 5: Quit Ubi for instructions on how to quit Ubi.

2. Using Ubi in Touch Mode You can interact with the projection display as though it is a touch screen with your finger or with the

Ubi pen. Interact with the projected display using the simple touch screen gestures you already know:

tap, press and hold, swipe, and zoom. You can create a projected display up to 88 inches diagonally

and interact with your finger or pen within Ubi’s operational range (see below). Refer to Ubi Important

Interaction Notes to learn more about how to interact with Ubi.

3. Transfer License You can transfer a license between machines. Open Ubi Service from the system tray and click

“Transfer License”. Wait a few seconds until the confirmation of successful return. This process

removes the activation key from your original machine so that you can reuse the key on another

machine to activate Ubi.

4. Report a Bug to Ubi Submit a ticket directly via: https://ubiinteractive.zendesk.com/anonymous_requests/new

5. Quit Ubi To quit Ubi, unplug the Kinect. To stop Ubi Service, click on the Ubi icon in the system tray bar and click

“Quit”.

6. Additional Notes regarding Display Scaling Issues For some tablets and laptops such as Microsoft Surface Pro, you experience an offset between where

the pointer is located and where you touch down. You will need to follow the steps below to turn off the

magnification effect when connecting to a projector.

1. Mouse right click on your desktop and select “Screen Resolution”

2. Select “Make text and other items larger or smaller”

3. Check the “Smaller – 100% (default)” radio button and click “Apply”

4. Sign out and re login to your account again.

Enjoy using Ubi!
