A library account is set up when you start your job - there is no need to register. Your staff ID card is also your Library card: please bring it with you whenever you use the Library. You can borrow 30 items at any one time. One-week loan books are loaned to staff for 2 weeks, three-week loan books for 4 weeks, and DVDs and videos for 7 days.

We follow up these initial sessions by focusing on more detailed areas such as research techniques and information sources. We have found that the most successful sessions are those linked to studio-based projects, cultural / contextual studies assignments and dissertation research. Online information sources are important research tools and we offer hands-on sessions to assist students to develop effective search strategies and a critical approach to information retrieved.

As well as being responsible for course liaison and collection development, Librarians also plan and deliver information skills workshops, and provide specialist one-to-one research advice to students and staff.

Library Research Skills

You can arrange information skills sessions to suit your course timetable or to complement a current project. We offer introductory sessions to students at the beginning of their course. This usually includes a short presentation on library services followed by a tour.

and currency: we can advise on the availability of new editions or e-versions. We offer a digitization service, so that pdfs of eligible materials can be created and made accessible to all via myUCA, and it is also possible to link directly to specific programmes or films on eStream (see previous page). Direct links to your course reading list material can also be created on the Library catalogue.

We routinely scan alerting services, publishers' websites, and book reviews in newspapers and specialist journals in order to identify new resources for addition to our stock. Our aim is to develop, maintain and make accessible collections of learning materials in a wide range of formats that enhance the student experience. We will order print, electronic and DVD stock on your recommendation.

Course Liaison A qualified Librarian is assigned to each course, and we seek to promote and maintain effective iaison between teaching staff and the library by attending course team meetings and, where appropriate, project/essay briefings. We provide quality services that complement learning and teaching across the University.

Library Services Supporting Teaching

UCA’s reading list policies, which can be found under ‘Services for academic staff’ on the Library web-site, ensure we purchase sufficient copies of your essential and recom-mended reading list titles to meet student expectations. Supply us with your reading lists in plenty of time and we will check them for accuracy

Browsing the latest journals

You are welcome to come and talk to us (or phone or e-mail)

at any time to discuss sessions for your students.

Study Advice Service

Study Advisors deliver lectures and workshops to enable the development of a critical and reflective approach and support effective research, academic writing and referencing, note- taking, idea development, under-standing and avoiding plagiarism, and time management skills. We also offer one to one tutorials to students to help them to get the most out of their course and reach their full potential.
