HOW TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THE CAREERS FESTIVAL

It can be a good idea to take copies of your CV to give out to those employers whowould like one, but it's not essential.

Here are a few handy tips on how you can prepare.

Find out who is attending - see the full list of organisations on the careersfair webpages.

Stand out - distinguish yourself from others by demonstrating an understanding of theorganisation, familiarise yourself with what they offer before the day.

Build your confidence - approaching complete strangers can be daunting. So, when you arrive, don't rush to your favourite organisation. Instead, network with others first, toincrease your confidence.

Be professional, polite and courteous. Display a positive attitude, smile and relax.

Prepare some questions in advance - also make sure you tailor them and avoid asking questions you could find easily elsewhere.

Market yourself. Recruiters meet hundreds of students, so consider yourself a brand anddetermine your USP (Unique Selling Point). Impress them and they may ask for your CV.

Dress appropriately. You're not expected to be suited and booted (unless you want to be), but don't rock up wearing an expletive covered t-shirt. It'll get you noticed, but forall the wrong reasons.

Feel free to ask a recruiter for their business card. You might want to ask furtherquestions or reference them in your application.

Allow plenty of time. Fairs get busy, particularly in the period after lectures have finished, so make sure you give yourself time to visit the stands you are most interested in.We have a 'quiet half hour' for those with disabilities so email [email protected] tofind out more.

Our short ‘Prepare for the Fair’ online course goes through all these tips and more and will help you practice your networking and ‘elevator pitch’.

DON’T forget it’s about being yourself and just enjoying the opportunity to meet newpeople and discover more.

Just come along and see for yourself.
