    BOBCAT GREEN C AMPUS TIMES

    On Wednesday December 30, 2011, The Green Campus Program at UC Merced organized aCareer Panel where students were introduced to different green careers in our campus. Theentire panelists were UC Merced Employees working for Facilities, LEED Certification, WaterStakeholder, Energy and other departments. UC Merced is one of the greenest universitycampuses having all of its buildings LEED Certified and growing from the grown up with thefocus of sustainable design. Different green clubs on campus were invited to the event, for anopportunity to showcase their efforts on campus in making our university more sustainable.There were several projects that stood out including UC Merceds Water Battle,Weatherization Projects in the City of Merced, Sola Powered Tractor and CompostingProjects. The event took place in the Dinning Commons where students were attracted tothe event while passing to grab lunch. The Green Campus team hopes to expand this projectfor next semester and invite several other green professionals from the Central Valley andNorthern California, and hopes to collaborate with UC Merced Careers Services to create a

    Green Job Fair.

    WRAPPING PAPER-Use environmentallyfriendly wrappingpaper. Avoid using foilor metallic wrappingpaper. Reduce theamount of tape used.

    6. REUSE/RECYLE-Reuse or Recycle giftpackaging materials!

    andpublicinfrastructure.

    TheprojectoriginatedattheSwissFederalIns5tuteof

    TechnologyinZurich.Thegoaloftheprojectistoreducethe

    countriesaverageenergyconsump5onto2000waKswithout

    reducingthestandardofliving.The2000standardwerederived

    fromtheglobalaverageenergyuse,meaningthatwhiletheUnited

    Statesisat12000,othercountriesarewellbelow1000.Comparing

    countries,WesternEuropeuses6,000,Chinauses100,and

    Switzerlanduses,000.

    Toachievethe2000standard,itisupthecountrytoreinvest

    itsassets.Implemen5ngalowenergybuildingstandardand

    improvingtheefficiencyofroad,avia5on,andnau5cal

    transporta5onwillhelpmeetthestandard.Useofrenewable

    energiesanddistricthea5ngwouldalsoimproveenergy

    conserva5on.ShouldeverycountryaKempttoreachthisgoal,it

    wouldrelievefearsofclimatechangeandgivetheworldenergy

    TheGreenFes5valcametoSanFranciscoonNovember17th2011,displayingsomeofthenewestGreenTechnologyandProducts.Thereweremanygreenbusinessesthatshowedleadershipin

    socialandenvironmentalresponsibilityandfocusedonbusinessasatoolforposi5vechange.Outofthesebusinesses,oneofthemthatstoodouttoGreenCampusInter,DaoVangwasabusinessthat

    createdtrashbagsoutofcompostorcornmaterial.Thebagswereverydurableandbiodegradable!This

    isamagnificentproduct.Being100%biodegradable,thiswillbringusalongwayinkeepingthe

    environmentsustainableandmaybethefutureofplas5cbags.Thiswouldbeagreataddi5ontoour

    campus!Therewereotherbiodegradableproductsdemonstrated.Itwasimpressivehowmostofour

    dailyusedproductsthatcanbeeitherreusedoraremadeofbiodegradablematerialscanreplaceused

    items.

    Therewerealsomanyspeakerswithagreatamountofknowledgeinsustainabilityandbeing

    green.LeonardAdler,theCEOofGreenJobsNetwork,wasaninspiringspeaker.Hetalkedaboutthe

    importanceofagreenjobandgave5pstojobseekerswhoareinterestedinenvironmentalorsocial

    responsibilitytofindjobs,explorecareers,andbuildprofessionalnetworks.Asheencouragedpeopletoseekagreenjob,healsoencouragedtheGreenCampusteamtosetupasuccessfulGreenCareerPanel.

    sustainabilityprac5ces,whichtheycanadoptfortheUCMercedCampus.Wealsovolunteeredduring
