The CoachesUCONN INTERIM HEAD COACH T.J. WEISTT.J. Weist, a 25-year veteran of the coaching profession who most recently served as the wide receivers coach at Cincinnati, is the interim head coach at UConn for the rest of the 2013 season. Weist was elevated to that position on Sept. 30 -- four games into the 2013 season. Weist is in his first season at UConn and continues to serve as offensive coordinator and also has position responsibil-ity with the wide receivers.During his time with the Bearcats, Cincinnati won a total of two BIG EAST Cham-pionships. Weist (pronounced WEEST) helped lead the Bearcats to a 10-3 record in 2012 and a 48-34 victory over Duke in the Belk Bowl. Weist served as Cincin-nati’s offensive coordinator in the Belk Bowl as the Bearcats gained 554 yards of total offense on 53 plays and did not have a turnover. Cincinnati was 17 of 25 in passing for 332 yards.Weist joined the Bearcats after eight years at Western Kentucky mentoring the re-ceivers. He also served as the team’s assistant head coach (2007-09) and offen-sive coordinator (2003-06). Weist came to WKU from Indiana, where he served as wide receivers coach from 1997-01. While at IU, he also carried special teams responsibilities with the return units and also served as the Hoosiers’ recruiting coordinator his first two years. Weist was also on the staffs at Tulsa (1996), South-ern Illinois (1994-95), Michigan (1990-93) and Alabama (1988-89).A native of Bay City, Mich., Weist was a wide receiver at Alabama from 1985-87, taking part in three postseason bowl games, and earned a letter as a senior. He earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education in 1988, and then added an exercise physiology master’s degree one year later.

SMU HEAD COACH JUNE JONESJune Jones is in his sixth season as the head coach at SMU and has led the Mus-tangs to bowl games in each of the past four year and wins in three of them. Prior to his move to SMU, Jones was the head coach at Hawaii for nine years from 1999-2007, where he had an overall record of 76-41 and led the team to six bowl games, including a trip to the Sugar Bowl following the 2007 season. Hawaii had a final ranking of No. 17 in the country that year.Jones has had a long career in football, including assistant coaching jobs in the USFL, CFL and NFL. He was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 1994-96.He is a graduate of New York State Regents College and played quarterback at Oregon State, Hawaii and Portland State during his collegiate career.

• UConn and SMU have met just once in the past, a 31-30 Mustang victory on Sept. 16, 1989. The game was SMU’s second after football was reinstated, and ocurred while UConn was still an FCS (then Division 1-AA) program in the Yankee Conference.

THE GAME

UCONN VS. SMU HISTORYSaturday’s game will be the second meeting all-time between the schools with SMU winning a wild 31-30 game on September 16, 1989 on the SMU campus at Ownby Stadium. The game was SMU’s second of the 1989 season after the sport of football was re-instated after SMU did not play in 1986-88. The Mustangs had lost to Rice in their first game of the year 36-5. NFL Hall of Famer and SMU graduate Forrest Gregg was the head coach for SMU.In the UConn game, the Huskies led 23-7 at halftime and had a seemingly com-fortable 13-point lead of 30-17 after RB Kevin Wesley scored on a nine-yard run with 7:31 left in the game.However, SMU came right back and scored on a 43-yard TD pass from Mike Romo to Mitchell Glieber and Romo converted on a two-point conversion pass to make it 30-22 Huskies with 5:05 left.SMU then recovered an on-side kick and got the ball right back and scored on a 43-yard field goal to make it 30-25 UConn with 3:14 left.On UConn’s next possession, the Huskies could only move the ball to their own 27 after a first down would have most likely sealed a win.Instead the Huskies had to punt, and after a UConn interference penalty, the Mustangs got the ball at their own 45 and marched down the field for the win-ning score. SMU converted on both a third-down conversion in the drive and a fourth down. Romo hit Michael Bowen for a two-yard TD pass on the final play of the game. UConn QB Matt DeGennaro was 25-of-37 in the game for 339 yards while WR Mark Didio had nine receptions for 148 yards. Romo passed for 371 yards while Glieber had 117 yards of receiving.The game remains known as the “The Miracle on Mockingbird” in SMU lore and was ranked the eighth greatest moment out of 100 in SMU football history.

UCONN-SMU CONNECTIONSThe UConn roster has one Texas native on it – redshirt freshman center Kyle Bockeloh (Houston)…SMU does not have a Connecticut native on its roster, with the large percentage of Mustangs coming from the state of Texas.

HEAD COACHING DEBUTST.J. Weist made his debut on Saturday, Oct. 12 as the Husky head coach on an interim basis as the Huskies lost to USF 13-10. HUSKIES AND NATIONAL POLLSConnecticut has been ranked in the Associated Press poll for six weeks during its FBS history, four weeks in the USA Today poll and seven weeks in the BCS rankings. UConn was No. 25 on Dec. 5, 2010, in its only ranking of that year. The Huskies were No. 16 on Oct. 28, 2007 and Nov. 4, 2007, No. 25 on Nov. 11, 2007, No. 20 on Nov. 18, 2007 and No. 24 on Sept. 28, 2008.

UCONN VS. RANKED TEAMSLast Friday’s game vs. Louisville was the 23rd time in school history that the Huskies have faced a team ranked in the Associated Press poll at the time of the game as the Cardinals were ranked No. 20. Earlier in the season, on October 26, UCF was ranked No. 21 and Michigan was ranked 15th for the UConn game on September 21. UConn has a 2-21 record in those games with the two wins coming vs. No. 19 Louisville on November 24, 2012 by a 23-20 score in triple overtime and on Oct. 27, 2007 with a 22-15 win over No. 11 USF. UConn first played a ranked team in the 2001 season opener at No. 9 Virginia Tech. UConn has played the country’s top ranked team once when it traveled to Miami on Oct. 5, 2002.

THREE RANKED TEAMS IN SAME SEASONFor just the third time in school history, UConn has faced three ranked teams in the Associated Press poll at the time of the game. HUSKIES SCHEDULE 13TH TOUGHESTUConn’s 2013 schedule is currently ranked the 13th tough-est in the nation out of 127. The ranking is based on the records of past and future opponents. UConn’s schedule is the toughest in the American.. Purdue is ranked No. 1 this week, followed by Tennessee, Utah, Virginia Tech and Georgia.

UCONN FOOTBALL A LEADER IN ACADEMICSThe UConn football program continues to be a leader in terms of academic performance by its student-athletes. UConn was the top team in the NCAA’s Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of both October 2008 and ’09 among Big East league schools. In 2010, the Huskies GSR was third in the Big East and within four points of the second place team in 2011, was tied for fourth in the league, but within four points of the two schools that were tied for second. UConn’s 75 percent GSR mark released in 2012 was well ahead of the national GSR for FBS teams, which was 67 percent. The UConn football program also had the highest NCAA GSR for African-American student-athletes among all state universi-ties that participated in a bowl game in 2008. In five of the past seven years, including 2007, ‘08 and ‘09, UConn was recog-nized by the American Football Coaches Association for its high graduation rate. UConn’s overall GSR in 2009 was the third-highest of the more than 50 state universities that participated in a bowl game. In 2012, the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the UConn football team was an impressive 963 over a four-year cycle, with a one-year mark of 950 for the 2010-11 academic year. The 963 was above the national average for FBS schools (952) and public institutions (943). UConn’s 2013 APR score of 958 was 11 points higher than the national average of public institutions.

HUSKIES VS. NON-CONFERENCE FOES SINCE 2002Connecticut boasts a 45-26 record against non-conference opponents in the regular season since making the move to the FBS in 2002. The Huskies have won 20 of their last 32 regular season non-league games overall with the only blemishes coming via a one-point loss at Virginia (17-16) in 2007, losses to North Carolina in 2008 and ‘09, Michigan and Temple in ’10, Vanderbilt, Iowa State and Western Michigan in ’11, North Carolina State and Western Michigan in ’12 and Towson, Maryland, Michigan and Buffalo in ’13.UConn has posted the following records in non-conference regular season games: 6-6 (2002), 9-3 (2003), 4-1 (2004), 3-1 (2005), 3-2 (2006), 4-1 (2007), 4-1 (2008), 4-1 (2009), 3-2 (2010), 2-3 (2011), 3-2 (2012) and 0-4 (2013).

HUSKIES ON THE REBOUNDUConn is 34-27 in games following a loss since Oct. 26, 2002. The Huskies lost their 2012 season finale vs. Cincinnati and the record includes games over two seasons with the losses to Towson, Maryland, Michigan, Buffalo, USF, UCF and now Louisville.

OFFENSE NOTES

BOYLE GETS THE STARTING NODUConn freshman quarterback Tim Boyle (Middlefield, Conn.) made his first career start and got his first career playing time

last Saturday against USF. Boyle was 15 of 43 in the air for 149 yards without a touchdown or an interception. He also ran the ball nine times for 12 yards. Against Cincinnati, he was 22 of 39 for 310 yards and three interceptions. The 310 yards tied as the 30th highest mark in UConn single-game history.He was seven of 21 for 47 yards and two interceptions vs. UCF and was 14-for-29 for 113 yards vs. Louisville. Boyle was named Connecticut High School Coaches’ Association Player of the Year as a senior in 2012 at Xavier High School in Middle-town.Boyle became the first true freshman to start a game for UConn at quarterback since Shelton native Dan Orlovsky did on October 6, 2001 – a 19-0 win over Eastern Michigan. Orlo-vsky started 43 consecutive games over three-plus seasons, concluding his career with a win in the Huskies’ first-ever bowl appearance – the 2004 Motor City Bowl.Boyle was named first team All-State by the New Haven Reg-ister and All-Hartford Courant and was named All-Southern Connecticut Conference as a senior. He threw for nearly 2,500 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior as team won state Class LL championship for the third-straight season – a 48-14 win over Norwich Free Academy at Rentschler Field. Boyle was named one of three finalists for the Walter Camp Football Foundation Connecticut Player of the Year Award along with fellow UConn freshman FB Matt Walsh (Madison, Conn.).As a junior, Boyle shared starting duties and threw for 850 yards and 15 TDs in six games.On June 29 at Rentschler Field, Boyle played in the Hall of Fame Classic Military Bowl – a Connecticut all-star game – and had two TD passes leading his team to a 15-14 win. He was 12 of 24 in the air for 134 yards.

McCOMBS GETS CAREER HIGH VS. BULLSUConn junior running back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a career-high 164 yards of rushing on Oct. 12 vs. USF on 20 carries with a long of a 52-yard TD run. The mark topped his previous career-high of 152 yards vs. Syracuse in 2011. McCombs now had ten 100-yard rushing games in his career and one this season. He owns two of the top six single-season rushing marks in school history.McCombs had 135 yards on 10 carries in the first half, which easily topped his season best for a total game – 76 yards on 17 carries vs. Towson in the opener.McCombs was named a preseason candidate list for the 2013 Doak Walker Award, which is given to the nation’s top college running back each year by the PwC SMU Athletic Forum. McCombs has led UConn in rushing the past two seasons with 1,151 yards in 2011 and was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America and a Second Team All-BIG EAST pick. He was the second-leading freshman rusher in the country in ‘11. Last year, he led the Huskies with 860 yards on 243 carries.

He also has two other 100-yard receiving games this season (100 vs. Towson, 102 vs. Michigan) and has four for his career (123 vs. Western Michigan in ’12).UConn redshirt junior Shakim Phillips (Paterson, N.J.) is second with 24 receptions for 333 yards and three TDs this season despite missing two games with a hamstring injury and playing sparingly vs. USF. He saw regular action vs. UCF and led the team with four receptions for 21 yards.Philips had ten receptions for 178 yards and one TD vs. Maryland on Sept. 14, which was a career-high in each category. The 178 yards of receiving was the most for a Husky in UConn’s FBS era (since 2002). It marked the first time a Husky receiver had more than 150 yards in one game since Marcus Easley had 157 against West Virginia on Oct. 24, 2009. It was the most receiving yards in a single-game for a Husky since Dak Newton had 222 vs. Villanova on Oct. 5, 1996.

DEFENSE NOTES

GAWDY DEFENSIVE NUMBERS IN 2012The UConn defense established itself as one of the top units in college football last season in 2012. UConn was ninth in total defense (309.92 yards per game), seventh in rushing defense (97.92 yards per game), 15th in tackles for loss (7.33 per game), 18th in sacks (2.75 per game), 36th in pass defense (212.00 yards per game) and 19th in scoring defense (19.83 points per game). UConn led the BIG EAST in total defense, rushing defense, pass defense and sacks. UConn gave up just 36 points in the first quarter of games last year (field goal by WMU, TD vs. Buffalo, two FG by Rutgers, two FG by Syracuse. TD by USF, TD by Cincinnati) and gave up only 33 first quarter first downs. The Huskies have now given up just 78 points in the past 17 games in the first quarter, including the six games this season and 35 of those points coming in the last four games.

SMALLWOOD A SEMIFINALIST FOR BUTKUS AWARDUConn junior linebacker Yawin Smallwood (Worcester, Mass.) was named as one of 12 semifinalists for the 2013 Butkus Award, which honors the country’s top linebacker. Finalists are announced on November 26 and the winner on December 10.Smallwood was the only semifinalist from a school in the American. The Hus-kies also played against Buffalo LB Khalikl Mack, another Butkus semifinalist.Smallwood has led UConn in tackles in six of the Huskies first eight games with 16 against Towson, 14 against Maryland, 13 vs. Michigan, 12 vs. Buffalo and 10 vs. Louisville. He was second on the team in the USF game with nine and came back to lead the team with 13 against Cincinnati.He is ranked sixth in the country in tackles per game at 11.1 and is second in The American. Smallwood was named to the American Weekly Honor roll for his performance vs. Michigan.He was named the National Defensive Player of the Week by CBSSports.com for his performance vs. the Wolverines.

Smallwood was named to virtually every defensive award pre-season Watch List for the 2013 season, including the Butkus. He was also named to the lists for the: Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and the Bednarik Award -- both are given to the top defensive player in the country.Smallwood was a first team All-BIG EAST selection in 2012 and led the Huskies in tackles with 120 and was second in tackles for a loss with 15. He had four sacks and two forced fumbles. Small-wood was tied for 20th in the country in tackles per game (10.0) and was third in the BIG EAST. Entering 2013, Smallwood had played in all 24 UConn games over the past two seasons and with 214 career tackles with 5.5 sacks and 17.5 TFLs.

SPECIAL TEAMS NOTES

CHRISTEN FG STREAK BROKENRedshirt senior kicker Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) missed a 46-yard field goal in the third quarter of the Michigan game, which broke a streak of ten-straight FG attempts dating back to last year. He made two against Buffalo (33 and 37 yards) before having a 48-yarder blocked in the third quarter. On October 12 vs. USF, he had a make (32), a miss (49) and one blocked (47). He made a 26-yarder and misses a 47-yarder vs. Cincinnati on October 19. He made a 40-yarder vs. UCF on October 26 and a 35-yarder vs. LousvilleOverall this season, he is 9-14 in field goals with the 40-yard-er vs. UCF being the long. He is a perfect 8-8 from inside the 39-yard line, but 1-6 from 40 and longer. He has connected on three of his last four attempts.He connected on three field goals in the win over Louisville on Nov. 24, 2012, including the winning 30-yarder in the third over-time. His other field goals were 39 yards in the first quarter and a 37-yarder in the first overtime. Dating back to the Syracuse game on October 19, 2012 and including the Towson and Maryland games of this year, he had made ten-straight FG attempts. He missed the ’12 season finale vs. Cincinnati due to injury.

WAGNER ALREADY IN THE BOOKUConn redshirt senior Cole Wagner (York, Pa.) has already es-tablished himself as a top performer in the UConn record books. Wagner is in his third season as the regular UConn punter and He is now second in UConn career history in punting average (min. 80 punts) with a 40.9 average, while the leader is Desi Cullen (2006-09) with 41.1. Wagner is first in career number of punts (287) and first in career yardage (11,728).This season, he has put 13 of his 50 punts inside the 20-yard line and 18 of his punts have been for a fair catch.Wagner was a candidate for the Ray Guy Award, given to the top punter in the country. He is also UConn’s nominee for The Burlsworth Trophy, given to the top player in the country that began his career as a walk-on. Wagner was given a scholarship prior to his redshirt sophomore season of 2011.He owns three of the top ten single-season punting averages in school history, including his 41.3 average from his sopho-more year of 2010, which is third.

RENTSCHLER FIELDThe Huskies moved into brand new Rentschler Field in East Hartford for the 2003 season and UConn is marking the 10th An-niversary of the stadium in 2013 with a number of special events and promotions, including the 2013 game tickets, which features a great moment in Rentschler Field history on each one. The ticket for the USF game featured Scott Lutrus against USF in 2007, UConn’s first win over a ranked opponent.The ticket for the Michigan game featured D.J. Hernandez celebrating a successful two-point conversion in UConn’s double-overtime win over Pittsburgh in 2006. The ticket for the Maryland game featured Alfred Fincher and UConn’s 22-20 win over Duke in 2004, the second year of stadium play. The ticket for the Tow-son game featured quarterback Dan Orlovsky and the Opening Day Game, a 34-10 win over Indiana on Aug. 30, 2003.Located within miles of Interstates 91, 84 and 384, the home of the Huskies lies on 75 acres of land donated to the State of Con-necticut from the historic Pratt & Whitney Airfield. The stadium, like the former airfield, is named for that company’s founder, Frederick Rentschler. The stadium boasts a capacity of 40,000 with 38 luxury suites.The Huskies have sold out 30 of their first 66 dates at Rentschler Field. UConn has played to 96.4-pct. of capacity all-time there, drawing 2,544,823 fans, or an average of 38,557 per game.UConn set a new all-time single-game attendance record at Rent-schler Field on Sept. 21 against Michigan with a crowd of 42,704. That capacity was achieved with extra bleachers brought in for that game.

FRIENDLY RENTSCHLER FIELDThe Huskies went 7-0 at home in 2007 at Rentschler Field and also 6-0 in 2010. UConn’s 3-4 mark at home in 2006 was its only sub-.500 record at Rentschler Field. UConn finished 4-3 at Rent-schler Field in 2011 and was 3-3 in ’12.The seven home wins in 2007 set a school record for a single season which was previously set in 2004. UConn stands at 45-20 all-time at Rentschler Field including a 25-10 mark in non-confer-ence games.

It was Towson’s first win against an opponent from the bowl subdivision. Towson put up 393 yards of total offense while holding UConn to just 287. Quarterback Peter Athens threw for 192 yards and another score and running back Sterlin Phifer caught a 23-yard touchdown and ran for another. West car-ried the ball a career-high 36 times, and broke the 100-yard mark for the 12th time in his career. The junior’s two fourth-quarter scores put the game away. UConn junior wide receiver Shakim Phillips (Paterson, N.J.) had two touchdown catches for Connecticut and redshirt junior wide receiver Ger-emy Davis (Lawrenceville, Ga.) caught five balls for 100 yards in the losing effort. The Tigers were up 13-10 at halftime and trailed just once, at 7-0. The Huskies were held scoreless in the second half of this one until junior quarterback Chandler Whitmer (Newnana, Ga.) hit Phillips with a 21-yard touchdown pass with 3:29 left in the game that cut the deficit to 26-18. But on UConn’s next opportunity, freshman Brian Lemelle (Harris-burg, Pa.) fumbled a punt. West, who now has 46 career touchdowns, then put the finishing touches on the upset, scoring from 5 yards out with 16 seconds left in the game. Connecticut took an early lead after a 92-yard drive that was set up with a diving interception by redshirt freshman safety Obi Melifonwu (South Grafton, Mass.). The redshirt freshman was pressed into a starting role when Andrew Adams (Fayetteville, Ga.) went down in camp with a shoul-der injury. Nine plays after the pick, Whitmer found Phillips breaking toward the left corner for a 31-yard catch-and-run. Towson answered in just four plays. Phifer swung out of the backfield on a delay pattern and Athens found him wide open for a 23-yard touch-down. Phifer scored again in the second quarter on a five-yard run. That came two plays after Jon Desir tipped and intercepted a Whitmer pass at the UConn 29-yard line, a ball that ended up between Desir’s legs. Towson controlled the second half. Athens took the Tigers on a 13-play 95-yard drive in the third quarter, finishing it himself. His dive from a yard gave the Tigers a 19-10 lead. Leon Kinnard, a transfer from UConn, made the big play of the drive, catching a 39-yard pass that set Towson up at the UConn 25-yard line. Connecticut drove into Towson territory, but fumbled on fourth-and-1 at the 33-yard line, giving Towson the ball back. The Tigers then drove 62 yards in 10 plays, with West going in from 6 yards out. The junior, who carried the ball a career-high 36 times, ran 1,051 yards as a sophomore, after rushing for almost 1,300 yards and scoring 29 touchdowns as a freshman. UConn’s Whitmer completed 15 of 27 passes for 199 yards and the two touchdowns. Husky junior running back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 76 yards rushing on 17 carries. UConn fell to 9-3 in season openers since making the jump to the FBS in 2002, including 9-2 at Rentschler Field.

Brown ran for 122 yards and a touchdown and threw for 277 yards and another score on Saturday night as the Terrapins beat the University of Connecticut football team by a 32-21 score before a crowd of 38,916 at Rentschler Field.Stefon Diggs had 110 yards receiving, including a 12-yard touchdown for the Terrapins, who improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2001.UConn redshirt junior wide receiver Shakim Phillips (Paterson, N.J.) caught a career-high 10 passes for 178 yards and a late touchdown for UConn, which fell to 0-2. UConn returns to action next Saturday when it plays host to Michigan at 8:00 p.m. on ABC -- a gametime which was announced late Saturday.Diggs, who caught five balls, had 98 yards receiving at the half. Brandon Ross finished with 95 yards rushing whie McCombs had 53 for UConn.Maryland went for it and missed again on fourth-and-1 from the UConn 23, and in between, Brown was picked off by senior cornerback Taylor Mack (Powder Springs, Ga.) on the Huskies 22.Maryland got on the board in the second quarter when Brown kept the ball on a read option and went 41 yards up the middle of the Husky defense to tie the game, capping a four-play 80-yard drive.The teams traded field goals to keep the game tied at 10. Redshirt senior Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) had a 33-yard field goal, which was his ninth consecutive successful attempt. The Terps then put together a 10-play, 86-yard drive just before halftime, settling for a 21-yard field goal after Levern Jacobs stepped out of bounds on a 48-yard reception just before diving into the end zone.

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - Senior running back Fitzgerald Toussaint ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns and junior linebakcer Desmond Morgan made a one-handed interception in the fourth quarter that swung the game Michigan’s way and the 15th-ranked Wolverines topped the University of Connecticut by a 24-21 score before a sold out crowd of 42,704 at Rentschler Field. The game was the largest attended game in the history of the stadium.UConn drops to 0-3 on the season while the Wolverines improve to 4-0. A week after Michigan needed a last-second stand to hold off Akron, Brendan Gibbons kicked a 21-yard field goal with 4:36 left to give the Wolverines their first lead of the second half.UConn junior Chandler Whitmer (Newnan, Ga.) threw two touchdowns and junior safety Ty-Meer Brown (McKeesport, Pa.) returned a fumble 34 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter that put UConn up 21-7.Quarterback Devin Gardner turned the ball over three times for Michigan and the Wolverines also muffed a punt inside their 10 that led to a UConn touchdown.After UConn junior linebacker Yawin Smallwood (Worcester, Mass.) stopped Gardner short on a fourth-and-two at the Huskies 22 with 11:23 left in the fourth quarter, the record crowd at Rentschler Field was rocking and starting to believe an upset was in the making. UConn’s last drive reached midfield, but Michigan pushed the Huskies backward and they came up a 3 yards short on a fourth-and-29.Michigan had three turnovers in the first half that helped give UConn a 14-7 lead. Turnover No. 4 came on its first possession of the second half. Gardner tried to sneak on a third-and-short, but as he slid down the line, he bumped into one of his linemen and the ball popped loose.Brown picked up the ball and had a couple of teammates escorted him into the end zone.Michigan finally responded with a drive, going 75 yards, the final 35 by Toussaint, who made it 21-14 with 5:37 left in the third.Gardner threw a first-quarter interception deep in UConn territory. He re-deemed himself with a 17-yard touchdown run to give Michigan a 7-0 lead with 1:52 left in the first. UConn ended the quarter with one first down.But Michigan couldn’t take advantage and Whitmer through two TD passes in the second quarter to put UConn up 14-7 at half.Gardner didn’t complete a pass in the second quarter and for the second straight week Michigan looked disjointed.

AMHERST, N.Y. -- Buffalo quarterback Joe Licata was 10 for 19 in the air with three TD passes for 177 yards as the Bulls defeated the University of Connecticut football team by a 41-12 score before a crowd of 20,952 at UB Stadium.The win was the first for Buffalo over UConn since 2001 as the Bulls up their record to 2-2 and the Huskies are 0-4. UConn is 0-4 for the first time since 1991.UConn turned the ball over five times while Buffalo scored through the air, on the ground and on defense in building a 28-12 halftime lead. They blocked a field goal and scored 17 points off Connecticut turnovers.Licata passed for a career-high three touchdowns, connecting with different receivers on each score. EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - USF kicker Marvin Kloss hit two field goals and Aaron Lynch returned a fumble 44 yards for a touch-down as USF beat the University of Connecticut football team by a 13-10 on Saturday before a Homecoming crowd of 37,861 at Rentschler Field. UConn drops to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in the American Athletic Conference while USF is 2-4 and 2-0.It was the Bulls second consecutive win without an offensive touchdown after beating Cincinnati last week.Kloss’ 44-yard field goal with just over four minutes left capped a more than seven minute fourth-quarter drive, and was the game winner. He has converted on nine consecutive attempts, including a 47-yarder in the first half.UConn junior running back Lyle McCombs (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a career-high 164 yards rushing and a touchdown for Con-necticut, which has lost five straight games to open a season for the first time since 1977. The Bulls winning drive went 65 yards in 13 plays. USF just missed out on a touchdown when Steven Bravo-Brown got his hands on a 26-yard pass, but dropped the ball in the end zone.UConn, which was held scoreless in the second half, got the ball back twice more. They drove to midfield with six seconds left, but a Hail Mary on the game’s final play fell incomplete in the end zone.An interception by redshirt junior UConn cornerback Byron Jones (New Britain, Conn.) at the USF 29, set up a 32-yard field goal from redshirt senior Chad Christen (Etters, Pa.) that opened the scoring.USF’s defense then got its third touchdown in three weeks. Ryne Giddins knocked the ball away from Boyle, and Lynch picked up the loose ball and rumbled 44-yards to make it 7-3 late in the first quarter.It took the Huskies just four plays to retake the lead as McCombs weaved his way for a 52-yard touchdown run, his longest run of the season and longest since 2011. The junior’s previous rushing high this season had been 76 yards. Boyle was 22 of 39 in the air for 310 yards with three interceptoins.Deven Drane tipped Boyle’s pass and picked it off, returning it 41 yards to the two-yard line. Kay ran the final few inches on a keeper with 1:31 left in the half.Boyle was sacked by Silverberry Mouhon as Cincinnati forced a punt, and Kay completed three passes, including a 32-yarder to Max Morrison for another touchdown with 17 seconds left in the half for a 27-3 lead. EAST HARTFORD, Conn. - The 20th-ranked University of Louisville team topped the University of Connecticut football team by a 31-10 score on Friday night before a crowd of 27,104 at Rentschler Field. Louisville improves to 8-1 on the season and 4-1 in American Atheltic Conference plays while UConn is 0-8 and 0-4 in the league.Freshman quarterback Tim Boyle (Middlefield, Conn.) threw three interceptions for Connecticut and was limited to just 113 yards of passing. Louisville had 369 yards in offense and held the Huskies to 237.Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater came into the game completing almost 74 percent of his passes. He might have been close to that Friday, but was victimized by numerous drops, as his receivers seemed to struggle catching a hard ball with the temperature hovering in the 30s.Bridgewater threw just his third interception of the season in the third quarter when UConn redshirt sophomore Andrew Adams (Fayetteville, Ga.) stepped in front of a pass. UL cornerback Terell Floyd got that back on the next play, intercepting Boyle’s pass and taking the ball back 17 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown. It was the first of two picks for Floyd.Cardinals cornerback Charles Gaines, who had an intercep-tion for a touchdown against USF, also scored. He blocked a punt after a muffed snap, scooped it up and ran 7 yards to open the scoring. The Cardinals have outscored opponents 75-6 in the opening 15 minutes of games this season. Gaines added a second-quarter interception.The Huskies lone TD came on a 14-yard pass from reshirt fresh-man QB Casey Cochran (Monroe, Conn.) to junior wide reciever Kamal Abrams (Dover, Del.) with 35 seconds left in the game.UConn took the game’s opening drive inside the Louisville 10 before a fumble. The Huskies also had a 14-play first-half drive, which ended in a 35-yard field goal with 14:54 left in the first half.But the Cardinals held them to 58 yards rushing. Louisville run-ning back Dominique Brown, who ran for 125 yards on just 18 carries in his first career start two weeks ago, had only 29 yards against UConn. Perry added 27 and Bridgewater had 21.
