ATHLETIC CONFERENCETHE AMERICAN

UCONNHUSKIES.COM

Not entirely unlike the nation that providesits namesake, the American Athletic Con-ference was born from an ideal in which

members with ambitious goals are provided with themeans to succeed in their quests for excellence.

With roots that extend to three conferences, theAmerican Athletic Conference membership in 2013— its debut season — consists of 10 institutions:Central Florida, Cincinnati, UConn, Houston,Louisville, Memphis, Rutgers, Southern Methodist,USF and Temple. In 2014-15, East Carolina, Tulaneand Tulsa come aboard. The 2015-16 season seesNavy join the ranks in football only.

The American will immediately take a place atthe forefront of Division I athletics, with schoolsthat have played in a combined five Bowl Champi-onship Series games, won four NCAA men’s basket-ball titles since 1999 and won eight NCAA women’sbasketball championships since 1995.

Among the league’s 2013 members, seven of TheAmerican’s 10 football teams have been ranked in

the top 13 in the BCS since 2006. Eight of the 10teams have been in the BCS top 25 in that span. The2013-14 membership will also include the most re-cent NCAA men’s basketball (Louisville) andwomen’s basketball (UConn) champions.

American Athletic Conference teams will have ac-cess to the pinnacle of college football’s postseasonstructure, both in the coming season and beyond. In2013, the league champion will receive an automaticbid for the final edition of the Bowl ChampionshipSeries, including a spot in the VIZIO NationalChampionship Game if it is ranked No. 1 or No. 2in the final BCS standings. Moving forward, TheAmerican champion would be chosen for the CollegeFootball Playoff semifinals if it is among the top fourteams following the regular season. Otherwise, theleague would place its champion in either the CottonBowl, Fiesta Bowl or Peach Bowl if it is rankedhigher than the champions of Conference USA, theMid-American Conference, the Mountain WestConference and the Sun Belt Conference.
